The first Harry Potter film has got off to a promising start at the Chinese box office, and has not suffered at the hands of film pirates, ticket sales figures indicate. Warner Bros estimated that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone took $2m (£1.4m) from 300 theatres during its first week of release, according to Screen International.

Children’s favourite JK Rowling was close to tears yesterday when she attended an awards ceremony in recognition of Britain’s bravest youngsters. The Harry Potter author was among those paying tribute to the 150 children – including nine from Scotland – who were nominated for the 21st annual Child of Achievement Awards.
