Three hours before the first-night curtain went up, Chris Rankin was seen by hundreds of thousands of youngsters on the national Newsround programme. Two hours later he was on the BBC regional Look East news magazine. And 10 hours after the curtain came down, the teenager had to be on the set for the latest Harry Potter filming session. Actress Fiona Shaw is to launch the National Theatre’s new performance space as she devises and acts in its first show.

The filming of Harry Potter has resulted in tourism at Gloucester Cathedral soaring spectacularly – defying national trends.

It won’t be out on DVD and VHS for another seven weeks but Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone appears to already be well on its way to becoming the biggest home video seller of all time. The Warner Bros. movie, which has grossed $316.4 million at the domestic box office, already tops several sales charts, based on pre-orders alone even though it will not be available in stores until May 28.
