In Search of the Perfect Person for Won-Won

Previously we told you there was to be an open casting call in the coming weeks for the roles of young Tom Riddle as well as Lavender Brown for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince film. MTV now has an article online quoting director David Yates about his quest to cast the perfect person to play Lavender Brown, the girl who will capture WON-WON’s fancy in the sixth Harry Potter film. The director has a test in mind, and it involves…snogging.

“You know what I’m going to do?” Yates said. “I never did this before, but I’m going to get Rupert together with the top five Lavenders, get him to come and read with them and snog with them. It’s a chemical thing, and you want to feel that chemistry between them. That will help me decide.”

“Really?” Grint asked ” since this was news to him. “Oh, wow, I didn’t realize that. That’s going to be interesting. It’s going to be embarrassing.”

Also confirmed in the article is that the role of Tom Riddle will not be performed at all by previous actor Christian Coulson. David Yates says

“I think Christian’s a brilliant actor, and I thought it was a terrific piece of casting, but he’s too old now,” Yates said.

“What I want is that equality of spirit,” Yates said. “Someone who is odd, charismatic, cool, has a quite cold spirit which Voldemort embodies. If I find that, that’s the most important thing.”

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will begin filming later this summer and is due in theaters November, 2008. Thanks Ryan!

lool That’s awesome! And there’s a video of David and Rupert saying that: http://www.mtv.com/ overdrive/?vid=158910

Avatar Image says:

Oh I see…I always thought that Christian Coulson is the best choice…I guess they can’t do anything with the age thing. =[

Avatar Image says:

Wow, that does sound interesting, but I can’t help thinking it may just be a good idea since, of course, Ron spends such a large amount of time snogging with Lavender in book 6.

And that’s such ashame about not having Christian as the young Voldemort. It definately makes sense why they won’t have him reprise the role, but I thought he was just fantastic in Chamber of Secrets!

Avatar Image says:

No bother Sue-just to let you know MTV have a video of Rupert also!

Its here-

Oh God! Rupert will hate that; he’s such a shy guy. He looks very uncomfortable about it in that clip. Maybe having to make-out with 5 girls will help him get over that particular fear, especially considering all the snogging he’ll be doing in HBP. (Oh and of course DH ;). Well, they better!)

This is off-topic, kinda, but there’s a new video of the press conference today at this link:

http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=49750&cl=3159103&ch=68276&src=news

They talk about the kiss, Emma says what she wants for Hermione’s character in book 7, and they talk about reading book 7. It’s really good.

Avatar Image says:

Pick me! Pick Me! I love guys with red hair!

Avatar Image says:

Haha! That’s pretty funny! Yet, like buthagrid said, a good idea!

Avatar Image says:

I just love that he knows exactly what he wants! I can’t wait to see who are the lucky people, though I’m ganna be extremely jealous! xD

Avatar Image says:

As if they weren’t going to have vast number of girls auditioning already, I bet this news boosts attendance even higher—if only to be one of the five who snog Rupert, even without becoming Lavender.

Girls, you can have him. My heart belongs to Matt Lewis; already appealing in his dedication to Neville’s characterization, he’s become an attractive fellow at age 17 (or thereabouts).

Avatar Image says:

I still think they should use Christian. I’ve seen him and he really looks young. Not to be mean but I am just not a big fan of Yates. Its just my personal opinion. I really didn’t want him doing hbp.

Avatar Image says:

ha! thats hilarious.

but i agree with Mags… well, in the fact that my heart belongs to a different cast member… that would be gary oldman!!!!

and i liked Christian Coulson. too bad that hes too old now… he was a great tom riddle.

Avatar Image says:

also about rupert… I guess I can see why Yates wants to see how Rup works with other girls but i never saw Ron and Lav as having any chemistry

Avatar Image says:

Wait—why not Coulson? What about the scenes with young adult Voldemort (the one we see visiting Hepzibah and coming to Dumbledore for the DADA job)? Am I missing something?

Avatar Image says:

I am very interested in who will be cast to play Lavender. I am impressed they brought back Alfie Enoch for Dean Thomas. Lavender had previously been played by a black actor as well. I would be surprised if both Weasely characters were making out with black significant others. That would be some serious multiracialism from Hollywood for a movie with this age demographic.

Avatar Image says:

kinda off topic but I don’t remember the guy who plays seamus being in any previews for movie 5. I hope hes not gone to. Don’t ask me why but I always liked him for seamus.

Avatar Image says:

I really wanted Christian Coulson. I think he could still do it. What a shame!

Avatar Image says:

That’s awsome! He’s just gonna make out with a bunch of potential Lavenders? That could be quite awkward though…

Avatar Image says:

So it’s alright for them to hire a woman in her late 30s/early 40s to play Moaning Myrtle, but they can’t have Coulson play Tom? Pathetic… He was fantastic for the part!! I hate recasting!

Avatar Image says:

padfootrocksmysocks – the name says it all – and i agree 100% – gary oldman, what a chameleon! he can be evil and ugly, or a sexy hero like sirius… drooool!! and a SERIOUSLY good actor (him and Jean Reno in the Professional – aka Leon – ROCKED!!)

and it’s a perfect person FOR Won-won, so it’s correct… but enough semantics!!

I reckon Rupert will be just FINE snoggin’ girls on set and in auditions – i mean, he is a teenage male right? he may be a little embarrased, but i reckon he’ll LOVE it ;)

Avatar Image says:

OH WOW. That’s just.. ridiculously HILARIOUS! Rupert is so shy it seems, it’ll be really embarassing to have peopele watching him kiss girls he hardly knows… I feel for him and yet, I think he won’t mind. X)

I think they may have an even bigger line-up for Lavendar than they originally thought! :P Ah well, it’s more likely that they’ll find someone perfect for snogging this way then!

Avatar Image says:

WoW! i wish i could audition for the film. red heads and british accents are my love<3 and i wouldnt mind snogging with rupert grint at all. But i can't beleive that christian coulson isn't going to play tom riddle! i mean he is older, but hes so gorgeous and he really did do well in the chamber of secrets.

Avatar Image says:

Redob, I agree with every word you said. We probably should expect this from the inconsistency that goes into making these movies, though. I’m going to miss Christian Coulson in HBP.

Love from, Jenny Wildcat

Avatar Image says:

Oh thats Going to be interesting wonder who Lavender is going to be played By wish it was me! hahaha Can’t wait to see what happens and how harry and voldemort spin their webs in the 7TH BOOK! WOOT!!

Avatar Image says:

Great Point Redob. I am a little mad over this. ANyone who looks at a recent pic of Christian would see he would be fine 4the part. Plus, whats more annoying in a film- a character looking a bit too young or too old or completely recasting a character and pretending its the same guy.

Avatar Image says:

I still can’t believe that they are casting lav lav and including that whole eposide. I thought david heyman said they aren’t going to include non harry centric story. Of all the other interesting things they cut from these movie, they decide to include won won. this sucks.

Avatar Image says:

That is ashame about Christian Coulson, but he will be 30 when it’s time to film. Plus, you never know what goes on behind the scenes. He may not have wanted to come back. Or, it could be because of something in DH. If they need to change actors because of age, now is the time to do it.

Either way, I want Simon Woods as Tom. He was just soooo cold and charasmatic as Octavian in Rome. You could just see the evil swimming in his eyes.

Avatar Image says:

oooh I don’t envy Rupert. That could be embarrassing!

kendra- you’re right about the chemistry thing. I think Ron only went out with Lav to get back at Hermione. also, yes I’ve seen pictures of Seamus so I think he’s in the film.

I’d like them to try CC out before making their minds up that he’s too old. Whoever they choose will have to play a few different ages, anyway, not just sixteen. He must have been in his twenties when he went to Heb.. Smith’s.

Avatar Image says:

i really thought that at the very least Christian Coulson could play the slightly older Tom Riddle (the one in his 20s) and with make up and some digital enhancement he could even look 16 or 17 (in movie terms, he can really look 20-22).

it is very true about the moaning Myrtle character, Shirley Henderson is actually 41 and she plays a 16 year old. that’s retarded!

Christian Coulson was a PERFECT Tom Riddle and it is a shame if they don’t bring him back! i doubt he doesn’t want to come back and be in the same movie as some of England’s (and the world’s!) best actors!

Avatar Image says:

10 out of 10 for enthusiasm for Yates! I bet the number of girls trying for Lavender Brown triples just for that.

Shame Yates won’t keep Coulson, though. He really was the best Tom Riddle, fit everything described about him in both Chamber of Secrets and Half-Blood Prince.

Avatar Image says:

Oh, come on… Christian is old?! He’s the best Tom Riddle!!! Maybe he can do the part after Hogwarts, but is kinda weird if in CoS he’s in his 16s they will change him for another 16 boy. Like, what the…

Not a big fan of Yates here too.

Avatar Image says:

I’m with skycoast—Christian Coulson could still do the ‘slightly older/young adult’ Tom Riddle, in the scenes after Riddle leaves Hogwarts.

I think continuity of actors is appealling, and even if Coulson only did the scenes visiting Hepzibah Smith and asking for the DADA job it would make sense; I agree with both Muggleborn Kylie and Anne that Yates should at least give him a try before making a definitive statement.

and at some point, i’ll write up my predictions about which of the current young actors get to be in the re-make, 25 years from now ;-)

Avatar Image says:

i am also very upset that they are not considering using christian coulson again. he was just absoloutley perfect for the part and, having seen him in a few things fairly recently (little britain, miss marple) he really does not look too old.

as many other posters mentioned, the actress playing myrtle is much older than the character, and actually looks older too.

i would find it less bothersome to have an actor that might look ever so slightly older than an inconsistency in the casting. for what i imagine will be a few fairly small scenes, i would think the would just go with coulson.

i am really disappointed to hear this.

Avatar Image says:

“So it’s alright for them to hire a woman in her late 30s/early 40s to play Moaning Myrtle, but they can’t have Coulson play Tom? Pathetic… He was fantastic for the part!! I hate recasting!”

That’s a completely different issue. They needed to cast someone who was older, but looked young when in her Myrtle get-up, so that over the years that she was needed for the film she wouldn’t age because a ghost doesn’t age.

Myrtle in GOF looks the same age as Myrtle in COS because once you get to your thirties your looks don’t change so much as when you are in your late teens and early twenties.

It was a very smart piece of casting.

The Christian Coulson thing is very different – he no longer looks like a teenager and they need someone who does.

Avatar Image says:

Man, to be snogged by five girls in turn, each one trying to do it better than the one before, no hard feelings from the losers, and he even gets paid! Rupert’s mom better film his face on the entire casting!

But, read lines for the role, too? What lines are to be read? The dialogue between them seems to limitate at “Won-Won!”, then it’s all smoochie!

Avatar Image says:

Poor Rupert! and Lucky girls! :D

About Christian Coulson, his portrayal of Tom Riddle was very good. And I guess I’m a little disappointed about him not coming back but who knows, we might see another better Tom Riddle. Just give it time.

I have to say though, give Yates a chance. We haven’t seen the movie so we can’t judge him.

Keep an open mind!

Avatar Image says:

Puddlefoot, I completely agree.

Avatar Image says:

Christian Coulsonnot not in the film? That s** so bad! Yates totally took the wrong decision. Thanks for ruining the film for me David…

Avatar Image says:

I am more than a little bit surprised they’re going to waste time on Lavender in the 6th film. The focus needs to stay on Harry to deliver a strong story. That having been said, I wish everyone good luck who tries out for the part (or for Tom).

Avatar Image says:

Kendra, I disagree. I think of Ron and Lavender as how I was with a guy a while back. We were good at snogging (and other things I can’t mention here), but that was about it. That’s why it didn’t last long. Anyway, to be 16 and British, and one of the top five Lavenders.

Avatar Image says:

Now how can be Christian too old? He was 25 when he was supposed to look 16, now he is 30.. I can’t see such big difference. Especially when there’s Shirley Henderson, who, okay, plays a ghost (as opposed to a memory, which isn’t such a real thing after all), but still, she is over 40, and plays a girl of 12. A dead girl of 12, that’s right, but if she is not too old, than Christian isn’t either.

Avatar Image says:

Maybe Henry Cavill could be a good Riddle, I’m not sure though…

Avatar Image says:

OMG.. I wish I can see that.. it’d would be totally cool and hilarious… lucky girls though =D

Avatar Image says:

Hahahaha, Rupert you are soooo adorable, you amuse me to no end, LOL. Now, if someone can make a video tape of that, just so I can watch his facial expression while he’s trying to overcome his shyness and embarrassment to snog all those 5 girls, hehehehehe, it’d give me my laugh of the year, possibly of several years :D

Avatar Image says:

Snort..well ido hope Rupert has a good time:-P

Avatar Image says:

Sux….can’t watch the video on http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?vid=158910 from outside the US :-(

Ah well!

Avatar Image says:

Nooo! i loved Christian as Tom Riddle he was one of the best cast people EVER in the series! He could have played him as older Riddle when he visits Hepzibah Smith! In fact he could still have played schoolboy Riddle, he was much older than 16 when he was in CoS and he was in Liitle Brittain about 2 years ago and hadnt changed a bit!

Avatar Image says:

“Wait—why not Coulson? What about the scenes with young adult Voldemort (the one we see visiting Hepzibah and coming to Dumbledore for the DADA job)?”

Nothing to add.

Avatar Image says:

Oh dear, he shouldn’t have said that… now there’ll be loads of people going!

Avatar Image says:

I vote for this chap!

Last seen playing an evil twisted schoolboy in Doctor Who… it’ll hardly be a stretch!

Avatar Image says:

Ha ha. This should be fun. I wish they had a video so we could see it unfold. JK so called this!! (well, she wrote it so she had the advantage). :p

Avatar Image says:

Yeah have Coulson play Riddle who worked at Borgin & Burkes.I would have Ray Fiennes play Voldy in Lord Voldemorts Request, just him unaltered. Also, what about 11 year old Riddle???! You need that scene to explain why Dumbledore and Harry go to the Cave!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

I have to say that I like Coulson too. I thought he managed to be perfect for the part in everyway. He looked very handsome. He looked innocent but at the same time he looked evil. I thought he was perfect. Well, hopefully they find someone that embodies the character even more.

Avatar Image says:

I am very much in the pro-Yates camp (although I reserve the right to change my mind when I see OotP on 12th July) BUT I think it is very odd not to use Coulson again given that the actor has aged well and can even be given a digital touch up, if required.

Avatar Image says:

Boy do I envy those girls auditioning for Lavender!! How lucky are they!!

Avatar Image says:

actually ron and lavender didnt have any special (!!!) chemistry! or had they? it was just snogging! well, i think rup will be okay ..;)

Avatar Image says:

LOL!! This cracks me up so much….wish we could watch the casting!! Although on a more serious note, it is kind of important to see how the girl will be kissing Rupert, after all that’s Lavender’s primary role in HBP, aside from being jealous of Hermione.

Avatar Image says:

GD, why can’t I be British?! No Christian Coulson? Sad pandas. : (

Avatar Image says:

hahahahhaha!!!!!!!! I couldn´t stop laughing!!!! Rupert will be fine I bet by the second girl he is going to be enjoying it!!!! hahhahaha I´m loving David Yates!! I wish I could audition I love Rupert Grint!!!

Avatar Image says:

Come on people! This is not Rupert’s first movie kiss. He did a bit of snogging (and implied sex) in Driving Lessons.

The one I feel sorry for is Emma. She said in an interview that she was terrified about the idea of kissing someone on screen. If things progress with the H/R thing in the seventh movie she will have to share that first movie kiss with Rupert. A little dodgy.

Avatar Image says:

Lol! I was waiting for something like this since I heard that they are casting Lavender Brown. Of course the audition has to involve snogging, because that’s pretty much the only thing that Lavender does in HBP. Rupert’s reaction to that is funny.

Avatar Image says:

‘That’s a completely different issue. They needed to cast someone who was older, but looked young when in her Myrtle get-up, so that over the years that she was needed for the film she wouldn’t age because a ghost doesn’t age.’ – puddlefoot

Actually, I think it’s completely the same issue. Since we only ever see the young Tom Riddle in flashbacks, you would need to have someone who will look the same from the filming of the second film to the filming of the sixth. You can only get that with an adult actor.

Plus, I agree with everyone who’s said that Christian Coulson doesn’t look at all too old. He was brilliant, and I will miss him.

I’m a bit upset now. This is the first thing that I’ve heard from David Yates that I’ve strongly disagreed with. I am disappointed.

Avatar Image says:

I don’t know why they need to recast young Tom Riddle. I thought Christian did an outstanding job. Why worry about the age? According to the books Snape, James, Sirius, Remus and Lily should all be the same age and should be no older than 36 years old. They have actors playing them who look – and who in fact are! – considerably older. Why fuss about Christian?

I think the thing with Rupert is part amusing and part gross. Should there really be any chemistry between them?

Avatar Image says:

I would love to play Lavender, but I’m not from the UK! I do have heritage from all 4 UK countries though, but, sadly, no accent lol. I’d be about the right age too, I’m the same age as Dan, 17 turning 18. Not sure how Lav Lav is supposed to look though, she’s never really described much.

Avatar Image says:

I am SO incredibly bummed to hear they won’t be using Christian Coulson. They should go by whether they can make him LOOK like he did in CoS, not his current age. Continuity is so important, but sometimes I wonder if these directors want to do anything they can to make their film look different from the previous directors, which is unfortunate. I agree that this is one of the very few things I’ve heard that concerns me about Yates (along with my concern about whether he’s fleshed out the ending enough or done something similar to GoF and skirted over it, but we shall see). I guess all we can do is hope that WB hears our outcry and they change their minds! Last I heard, it sounded like Coulson was more than willing.

Avatar Image says:

awwww cutesy lol

Avatar Image says:

but embarassing…guess Rupert can’t complain….but he does portray himself to be a shy guy…oh well….still cutesy me thinks ;)

Avatar Image says:

awe, rupert. hah, he’s so shy! or, so i hear. i’ve never met him. those girls really are lucky though. i wish i cold be one of them. gah

Avatar Image says:

i thought the guy who played Jeremy Baines in Dr.Who (the family of blood) would be a good Tom Riddle i think he looks a lil like Christian Coulson but i think he’s even older. ahh well. i agree with budb too. i hope they have him 4 an older tom

Avatar Image says:

Awww. Rupert’s so cute! He seems so quiet, honest, and unaffected – not to mention witty. My daughter needs to find one like that!

Avatar Image says:

I disagree with all the people who says that the Lavender part should be cut. The R/H plot is included in the films, and the Lavender episode is an important phase of their relationship. If they didn’t cut the Yule Brawl, they can’t possibly cut the whole Lavender thing, which is much more relevant to their progressing relationship.

Avatar Image says:

Oh, poor Rupert! He’s so shy! Well, he needs to get used to making these sorts of sacrifices if he’s going to continue his acting career.:) Re: Christian Coulson…no big deal. In my opinion, he was a bit over the top in COS, anyway. I actually wish another Christian; Christian Bale; was younger. Imagine the great Tom Riddle he’d make! At any rate, I’m sure they’ll find someone suitable.

Avatar Image says:

BonnieRadcliffe… I totally agree. Won Won and Lavender is really a big part in HPB and it is also quite funny! I am glad it is being included.

Avatar Image says:

Aww, I’m really disappointed that Christian won’t be returning. I’ve read in interviews that he would have LOVED to have returned for the 6th film. =( I don’t understand why he couldn’t be the Riddle that goes to see Prof. Dumbledore for the DADA job, or the Borgin&Burkes Riddle. Or even freakin’ Tom Riddle Snr?!

Yates, I’m afraid you’ve made LOADS of people unhappy about this :/

And the Ron/Lav thing? Blah. I didn’t like that part about the book at all! But I do understand why it’s going to be in it. The major focus (I believe) was the horcruxes, and Tom Riddle memories and such, and who the half-blood prince is.

Avatar Image says:

Do you have to have a british accent? Obviously, everyone in the harry potter movies have one so would it put people off if someone had a different accent?

ex. american ?

THANK YOUUU=] !

Avatar Image says:

I think the thing that alot of us are forgetting is that for REAL continuity, they need to cast someone that looks and acts like Ralph Fiennes, not Christian Coulson.

When the typical Muggle movie goer sees young Tom on screen, they need to believe that they are seeing a younger-version of Ralph Fiennes’ Voldemort. They don’t care who plays him. Plus, This isn’t the first recasting of people from the first 2 movies. Voldemort himself was recast. And Christian was cast based on the earlier Voldmort, way before OotP and HBP were written.

It’s sad for Christian, but I’m sure they didn’t just off-handedly cut him the way it sounded in the article. It would have been easier from the “fan-outrage-canon-continuity” point of view to bring back Christian. Yates was asked a question, whose answer alot of people have been waiting for, but that he’s known for a while. I think it just popped out of his mouth.

As for WonWon and Lavender, I’m not surprised it is going to be in HBP. In the book, it seemed like they were making out in the background of almost every scene! HBP needs some comic relief to keep it from being soooo heavy in it’s movie form. I think it would be an awesome running joke throughout.

Avatar Image says:

p.s. As for young adult Riddle: Ralph Fiennes + make-up.
