Awwww, Albus! It’s fitting that she chose him. He is a great wizard, after all ;)

Avatar Image says:

But was he really 64 when he defeated Grindelwald in 1945? I didn’t think he was THAT old.

Avatar Image says:

Awww….our dear Albus.

Well, he was a bit younger than I had thought he was.

Avatar Image says:

One of the more interesting aspects of this is his birth year. According to the Lexicon JKR had stated he was around 150 years old and therefore speculated that he was born in 1840. Turns out he was 155. Of course, as some have noted, given the tremendous backstory it’s probably a little hard for her to keep track of every little detail.

Avatar Image says:

Fantastic! I love Albus, even more now that we know he was human.

Avatar Image says:

That is so gorgeous.

Avatar Image says:

Doesn’t that make Dumbledore 115 at the time of his death, not 155? I suppose that justifies Jo’s comment about McG getting on a bit to become head of Hogwarts.

Avatar Image says:

wow lived for 115 years I bet next month will be ron then hermonie then harry or just harry

Avatar Image says:

JKR could have changed her mind about Albus’s age.

But his death date IS a mistake. He died in 1997, not 1996. I hope she could fix it soon ^^

Avatar Image says:

I find it interesting that he doesn’t blink. Didn’t all the past wizards blink or move or something was shining?

Avatar Image says:

Ah I always wondered how old he was. I gues now we know. Thanks Jo!

Avatar Image says:

Aww, she planned this WOTM thing out quite well didn’t she? Looks like she’s gonna start going through some of the wizards we know, and will probably end it once and for all when she gets to Harry. And oh, we finally have DD’s birth year confirmed, YAY! Thanks Jo!! :D

Avatar Image says:

oh god. this totally made me cry now.

Avatar Image says:

Whoops – he died in 1997, not 1996.

Still, what a great choice for Wizard of the Month. Since this drawing is up on the official site, is this Dumbledore’s true appearance, canonically? ;)

How about Snape for next month? Or just go through all the main characters. :D

Avatar Image says:

I know it! BlogHogwarts.com

Avatar Image says:

aaaww its dumby!!!!

Avatar Image says:

Snape for October!

I wonder if she’ll fix the date.

Avatar Image says:

Thank you, Professor Dumbledore, for those most memorable words… “Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!”

Still makes me grin. :D

Avatar Image says:

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who questioned the dates.

Do you think that JRK has decided to switch age so it fit better with the time table of his Grindelwald relationship?

Avatar Image says:

i knew it would be dumbledore…

it creeped me out a lil… all the other wizards of the month moved… and albus didnt…

Avatar Image says:

What a great thing that my favorite character is the wizard of my birthday month! I hope you are enjoying your big adventure, maybe doing mischief with the Marauders and Fred?.. I think so.. ;)

Avatar Image says:

I never liked the idea of Dumbledore randomly being 150… we never had any hint of wizards lifespans being longer than muggles’ and it never plays into the books at all. I’m glad you finally ditched that idea. Though yes, his death year should have been 1997.

Avatar Image says:

I meant to say “I’m glad SHE finally ditched that idea” sorry!

Avatar Image says:

Excellent choice to post him as the Wizard of the Month. The brain of the most brillant plan to defeat He Who Must Not Be Named. And even though that plan had many sacrifices as his own life, everything was made “For the Greater Good”...

Avatar Image says:

But didn’t he died in 1997? Õ.o

Avatar Image says:

Thank you Jo for saving our souls with this wonderful story.

Avatar Image says:

Ah, Dumbledore. When is Harry going to be Wizard of the Month?

Avatar Image says:

Oh thank you so much for not saying who it was!! I cried when I saw the name :,(

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, when Is aw who it was, I almost cried. I’m still so sad that the series is over. Oh Dumbledore, I love you so. :)

Avatar Image says:

Is it sad that I almost started crying when I saw this?

Avatar Image says:

Is it just me, or is Dumbledore completely stationary? I didn’t see his eyes move or anything like her Wizards of the Month usually do.

Avatar Image says:

Yep, 115 not 155. I mistyped.

Avatar Image says:

Yay she put him on my birthday month :]

Avatar Image says:

I do remember her saying before that Dumbledore was about 150. She said that wizards and witches generally live a bit longer than muggles ad that they don’t die from the same things that muggles do. They will either die from old age or unless that contract some sort of magical disease like dragon pox. The magical community doesn’t get cancer or liver failure and the the like.

Avatar Image says:

Yea! It is Albus. I was hoping it would be. My theory is that she will start going through the Order of the Phoenix, who better to start with than it’s leader, then go on to the Marauders and Lily, and then continue on through Dumbledore’s Army, then bring it to a close someday with Neville, Luna, Ginny, Ron, Hermione, and Harry in that order. After all the series began with the Boy Who Lived, it is only fitting that it end with the Boy Who Lived at some point in the future.

Avatar Image says:

gimmemoar = I agree with greenfire, Jo has stated that wizards and witches live longer than muggles and that Dumbledore was 150, therefore she has got her dates mixed up somewhere.

I think that she is going to have to correct one or the other!

Avatar Image says:

duuude this is albus’ dream…

i mean, chocolate frogs is his “self-proclaimed proudest achievement” but, Jo’s site is EVEN better than that!

your my favorite character albus!

Avatar Image says:

Do we get Snape, too?

Avatar Image says:

Yeah! He’s not moving at all. No eye blinking or anything. Does that mean something?

Avatar Image says:

Oh I imagine she just changed her mind. It wasn’t in the actual book, so she was free to. His year of death is definitely an error though.

Still, this remains consistent with the idea of wizards having longer lifespans. Dumbledore was quite sprightly and didn’t display many signs of extreme age up through his death.

Plus Bathilda Bagshot was an adult, seemingly “middle aged” (in our terms) around the time the Dumbledores lived in Godric’s Hollow. She could easily have been around 140-150 when she died.

Avatar Image says:

Perhaps it was intentional that he “died” in 1996. Maybe she is saying he was dead from the moment he put on the horcrux ring, which was in 2006? Maybe Snape didn’t really kill him in 2007 because he was already dead? I can’t wait to hear what she says about this.

Here is the quote about his age from back in 2000:

http://www.accio-quote.org/articles/2000/1000-scholastic-chat.htm

Question: How old is old in the wizarding world, and how old are Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall?

J.K. Rowling responds: Dumbledore is a hundred and fifty, and Professor McGonagall is a sprightly seventy. Wizards have a much longer life expectancy than Muggles. (Harry hasn’t found out about that yet.)

Avatar Image says:

And it’s lovely to think that in exactly 2½ hours (as I write this) the Hogwart’s Express will be leaving Platform 9 3/4!

It’s great to see Dumbledore as Wizard of the month (it’s my birthday month too!) and I really really hope that Snape has his turn. I believed in him the whole time (apart from a slight wavering at the beginning of HBP, which had gone by the end of it) and was so upset by his death, it would be lovely to see him honoured by being made a WOTM!

Avatar Image says:

That’s a good dream, karen! I hope so too. :)

Avatar Image says:

If he died in 1996/7, then how did he manage to write those introductions to the Comic Relief books?

Avatar Image says:

oowwww, i got a bit watery eyed… How silly!

Avatar Image says:

It’s simply September: his portrait dictated those to publishers! :)

Avatar Image says:

Sorry! I should have said: lanikara!

Avatar Image says:

IcyBee – probabably the charity books were meant to be released during Harry’s later school years but what with the rising threat of Voldermont and the death eaters, it had to be postponed. So Albus wrote his piece on the books but unfortunately did not live to see their eventual release in the muggle world. Hope that satisfies the consistency thirst ;)

Avatar Image says:

Wait a minute, I thought Deathly Hallows ended in 97? No? Hun.

Avatar Image says:

But his eyes twinkle! I think his eyes twinkle!

Avatar Image says:

Coooooooool!!!!! i want snape or harry next month….

Avatar Image says:

I don’t mind Dumbledore isn’t moving, I was just delighted to see him there, and with the Elder Wand in his hand. Is that the Elder Wand?

Avatar Image says:

The locked door is open, too.

Avatar Image says:

1997, not 1996! Dear god…what a mistake!

Avatar Image says:

SPOILER ALERT Do you think she decided to put 1996 because that was when he actually decided to plan his death? But that wouldn’t make much sense to me, since he wasn’t dead at all during Harry’s 6th year! He was extremely active!...No, it’s just some mistake one of Jo Rowling’s house-elves did. Oh well…

Avatar Image says:

I think Dumbledore being 115 makes sense, I mean, if he was 150 what about Bathilda Bagshot who survived him either died about the same period (I don’t know when Voldemort killed her), she couldn’t possibly have her own philosopher stone, could she :D ? Maybe JK Rowling didn’t know when she said “150” that she would make old Batty the one that introduce us to Dumbledore’s past. Anyway, Dumbledore rocks.

Avatar Image says:

The door on J.K. Rowling’s website is open!

Avatar Image says:

I’m sorry… that door is already opened for more than a month…

Avatar Image says:

Didn’t J.K. Rowling state on a previous occasion that Albus Dumbledore was 150 years old? I positively am sure that she did something of the sort. Apparates to Accio Quotes

Anyways, happy birthday Albus!

Avatar Image says:

Yay! It’s Dumbly-dore! I love this Wizard!!! Although, he’s a lot younger than I thought he was (I thought he was around 150?!? Maybe JK changed her mind and didnt’ want wizards living to be that old?)

Avatar Image says:

This makes Dumbledore a contemporary of Mustafa Kemel Attaturk, Bela Bartok, George Enescu, Edgar Guest, Anna Pavlova, Pablo Picasso, Pope John XXIII, & PG Wodehouse (all of whom were born in 1881).

Avatar Image says:

update your site jo!

Avatar Image says:

That´s eerie. Themmoment I read the Headline of the Leaky News I KNEW IT. I knew it would be Dumbledore. Oh, he so deserves it. And on the the 1st of September, when Hogwarts school year starts! How fitting. Okay, she messed up with the death year, but okay, we know it´s 97.

Avatar Image says:

This is great that Dumbledore gets WOTM during my birthday month! Hooray! And I agree with alot of you, I’m sure Dumbledore would agree being featured on Jo’s site is more of an honor than being featured on the Chocolate Frog cards. ;) Nice point Snape Maverick maybe he did “officially” die when he put the ring on. And I’m sure Jo’s going to have explain the whole age thing or the fans will never let her rest. :-P

Avatar Image says:

Is it possible that in those interviews Jo actually said Dumbledore was a hundred and fifteen? “Fifteen” and “fifty” kinda sound alike…

And with the 1996 death date, its definitely a mistake but, given the evidence from “Deathly Hallows” (Dumbledore was approaching his 18th birthday when he graduated from Hogwarts in June 1898), Dumbledore was born during the summer. So maybe he died right before his 116th birthday, and Jo (don’t blame her for getting a date wrong, people, because she gave us the Harry Potter world for crying out loud) simply said in her mind, “Well, he was 115 when he died, and since he was born in 1881…” and then wrote down 1996.

Poor Lexicon, with all the new Deathly Hallows info, this could be both a curse and a blessing. Keep your chins up, Lexicon!

Avatar Image says:

Taj, I believe it was a webchat and that Jo herself wrote out the number “150”. She also then said that “Wizard lifespans are longer than Muggles’, something Harry discovered yet” – paraphrasing there, but that was the jist of it!

I honestly think she just realized that there’s no point in having wizard lifespans being twice and long as muggles, it doesn’t play into the books at all. So I think Jo has had a change of heart, and decided that wizards don’t really live any longer than the rest of us, necessarily, but that they just remain healthier and livelier in old age than muggles typically do. Makes sense.

Avatar Image says:

Maybe she put 1996 because Dumbledore knew he was going to die in 1996 and came to terms with it? But ah well, it’s cool that Dumbledore’s there! :)

Avatar Image says:

i love you dumbledore, you were always my favorite character.

Avatar Image says:

Im so happy she picked him!!! i love him to death! altho im still a little heart broken that he is gone! :(

Avatar Image says:

Dael is right, nothing’s moving !! I’m pretty sure his hidden hand will somehow get out of this sleev and show us some tricky thing ! A chocofrog or some sorbet ;).

Avatar Image says:

He looks like Peter o’Toole.

Avatar Image says:

Sob I made that half sob, half giggle when I saw who it was. Hope you’re having fun on that great adventure of yours. Tell Mad-Eye, Dobby, Hedwig, James, Lily, Remus, Tonks, Sirius, Snape and Fred that we all miss you guys. Thanks, Jo. Snape next, pretty please?

Avatar Image says:

Dumbledore is exactly 100 years older than Harry! That’s kind of cool…. These WOTM just get better and better…

Avatar Image says:

muggle mommy, harry was born in 1980, not 1981

When I saw the dates on the site, I assumed Jo was “Oh dear, maths” for both dates.

Avatar Image says:

I wonder if Jo will still keep wishing dead characters Happy Birthday (We know the birthdays of Remus, Dobby, Fred, and Snape. We also know the birthdays of Voldy, James and Lily, though she’s never wished them Happy Birthday).

Avatar Image says:

Ahwww. I feel nostalgic now! It’s so wonderful that Albus is the new WOTM! I hope to see Snape, too maybe on October! I love Snape and still cries when reminded of him. I’m not going to miss Harry Potter though, cause HP is in me. Thanks Jo for writing these fantastic books!

Avatar Image says:

I’m so glad she put Dumbledore on! He is one of my favourite characters! I would love to be like him, eccentric and funny, caring, wise, a true gentleman!

Avatar Image says:

Boo for Dumbledore! After the last book, I seriously dislike him. What a way to treat poor Harry!! Harry should have given his son Severus as a first name, NOT Albus. Grrrrrrr.

Avatar Image says:

Woohoo, Dumbleydorey!

You were amazing! = D

Avatar Image says:

The dates are curious. He died in ‘97, right? And he’s suppose to be some 150+ years old when he died? He’s one of my favorite characters and that’s not because he’s brilliant,(i wish he was never that brilliant, it feels like he’s always detached, hard to reach)but because he’s constantly placid, and above all, i love his levity; the way he talks to enemies as if they’re on a tea party! (and also i love the way he always do things with style!)

Avatar Image says:

Have you also noticed that the plant outside her office door is dying from lack of attention!!!

Avatar Image says:

I know this is a little late but I have had less time then I would like for jkrowling.com and Harry Potter related things because college started. But anyway, I was excited when I scrolled over the calander and saw the name because my birthday is this month and Albus was one of the better characters in the series. Next, once the Wizard of the Month page came up, the first thing I noticed was the death year. My first instinct was that it was wrong and then I thought “how could JK be wrong about something like that?!” so I worked it out and made sure before I posted that she was wrong and Harry was going to be 17 only a few months after Dumbledore died, making it 1997. I am glad someone else noticed the date. Serious Sirius Lover
