Lucky winners in the sweepstakes contest to see Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling at her New York Carnegie Hall appearance are now being notified by Scholastic. TLC readers Helene, Didir, and Meghan have sent us very happy owls relaying this most joyful news. If you are among the 1,000 Harry Potter fans who won two tickets to this Open Book Tour stop at Carnegie Hall Friday, October 19th at 7 p.m., please send in your reports and we will post them! Congratulations!

As noted previously, J.K. Rowling will be embarking on an Open Book Tour here in the US in October, making three appearances in Los Angeles, New York City, and New Orleans for school children. Scholastic, the US publishers of the Harry Potter novels and sponsors of this tour, have now announced the schools in Orleans Parish, Louisiana who will be attending the event on October 18. ALL 80 public schools in Orleans parish will be part of this event, with Scholastic also very generously donating a complete set of the Harry Potter series, books 1-7, to every public school in Orleans Parish and public library in New Orleans as well as “donating 10,000 copies of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first book in J.K. Rowling’s series, to Orleans Parish public schools for students who have not yet read the books and are now ready to begin their Hogwarts journey. ” Amazing. Readers will remember that New Orleans suffered terrible damage from Hurricane Katrina, with many of the libraries along the Gulf coast in Louisiana and Mississippi still in need of replenishment of books. Congratulations to all the lucky schoolchildren in the three cities who will hear our favorite author read from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, receive an autographed copy of the book, and be able to ask Jo questions about the beloved series of books.

Avatar Image says:

They call you. Whatever phone number you put on the entry form.

I about died on the spot. The nice lady from Scholastic said, “you can call me back if you aren’t sure you can come,” and I yelled, “I’m coming for sure! I can’t believe this!”

Avatar Image says:

Avatar Image says:

Clark

Avatar Image says:

Wow, congrats you guys! What a spectacular surprise!

I wonder if they are still calling people, now? I won’t give up hope yet!

Avatar Image says:

Oh, so lucky… I wish I could go, but I haven’t been called. Hopefully they ahven’t stopped calling…? oh well, congratulations everyone! That is SO cool! Maybe therere’ll be other opportunities!

Avatar Image says:

I didn’t see Clark’s response! There’s still hope, guys. Phew. LOL It might be by alphabetical order… Please… please… Haha.

Avatar Image says:

Hey guys,

They called my house around 10 AM MST time—I was at school, but my dad heard the Jo’s name on the answering machine and raced to pick up the phone!

Good luck everyone! I’m still shocked that I won!!

Meghan

Avatar Image says:

I’m gonna sit right here and plant myself like a tree next to the phone! I’m desparate to win lol!!

Congrats Meghan!!!!!!! You must be soooo happy! can you take me along? lol

Avatar Image says:

i won too but we need a cheap hotel to stay at any cheap ones anyone knows?

Avatar Image says:

So, are they stil calling people? Apparently they’ve been calling all day. I want to win sooooooooo bad…congrats to everyone who won.

Avatar Image says:

Congratulations to everyone who has won! I haven’t gotten a phone call. I hope they’re still calling people.

Avatar Image says:

So… Do you think it’s too late to give up hoping?

Avatar Image says:

I really hope I win. I decorated my envelope and everything.

Avatar Image says:

don’t give up.

Avatar Image says:

Yes, they leave a message if they don’t get you. And they give you a week to respond, or until the 19th for me.

In fact they made two calls to me, because I wasn’t home and my husband gave them my cell number. That’s where she left the message. They really try. And the woman at Scholastic was very nice.

Didir

Avatar Image says:

Okay… good luck to everyone. I am going ot leave the computer now; U’m stressing too much. :) Oh well, off to read DH! How apropriate…

Avatar Image says:

Sorry for posting that so many times! Bye!

Avatar Image says:

Aaah! People keep on calling my house, it’s making me go mad! I swear, if Scholastic ever gets around to calling, I’ll probably just not answer it.

I’ve honestly just gotten like five phone calls in the last ten minutes.

Congrats on the new winners! Kendra, I would check out a travel website for hotels or AAA, my mom always uses them. :)

Avatar Image says:

Are they still calling people?

Avatar Image says:

am I the only one thats refreshing the comments every 10 seconds?

Avatar Image says:

Jared-

not quite ;)

Avatar Image says:

lol

Avatar Image says:

I don’t know if they’re still calling people!

I was called yesterday, but from what I’ve seen they’re still calling today.

Don’t give up just yet!

Meghan

Avatar Image says:

ahh im so jealous of all of those who got called, i’ve been waiting for a call all day. havn’t given up hope yet tho, i just hope they r still calling people. congrats to everyone who got the call! make sure you tell us everything!

Avatar Image says:

They’re still calling people until Monday. My best friend won and I was so excited to get to go – then they told me I can’t have her ticket so I can’t. that was basically the worst day of my life! I asked the lady and they’re calling people until monday.

Avatar Image says:

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

Really? That’s amazing! Phew!!

Avatar Image says:

Kristen, I don’t understand because each winner wins 2 tickets. So you could go with your friend. Couldn’t you?

I can believe it but my husband got a call this afternoon and it was Scholastic!!! We wan!!!

I CANNOT believe it!

Avatar Image says:

Not necessarily, Laure, Krisitn and her friend could be underage (like me), so they would have to go with a parent or guardian.

Avatar Image says:

Congrats I wish that was me!!!

Avatar Image says:

They’re calling people until Monday? Then I still have hope!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, me too. crosses fingers Good luck everyone!

Avatar Image says:

me too

Avatar Image says:

I wish Scholastic would give word on how many more people they have to go.

Avatar Image says:

I got the call at 3:30pm but did not answer and the lady named Vicky at Scholastic stated I won a pair of Carnegie Hall JKRowling tickets….OMG…TO EXCITED TO TYPE!!! Melissa, Sue, John -email me…I am THE oldest HP fan at age 46…..YEAH

Avatar Image says:

Jessica…they called at 12:51 and i got the message when i came home from school

Avatar Image says:

THEY’RE CALLING TILL MONDAY??? there’s still hope!!!!! i’ve been sitting by the phone all day… it’s been so nerve wracking. it wrang twice. the first time it was some guy talking to me in spainish looking for Annora (?) then my aunt called…. AH!! Congrats to all winners!!! I hope that i can join your ranks

Avatar Image says:

I WON TOO!!! i couldn’t believe it! and yeah, they’ll leave a message if you don’t answer the phone. i called back right away. but, they called me two days ago, around 4 in the after noon. i’m just special. anyway, i live in SC, and actually am looking for someone(over the age of 18) who wants to go with me. i know, it’s crazy to ask total strangers, but we’re not strangers; we’re all Potter fans, and it links us;). everyone who wanted to go with me already has plans for that weekend(they absolutely can’t drop them…losers). so, if you live in SC or near, and aren’t a psycho, e-mail me some reasons to pick you and (if you have a myspace) you myspace page address so i can verify your identity(lol) and maybe i can work something out with you. cheers!

Avatar Image says:

oh forgot to include my e-mail:

mandynorbo@gmail.com

no spamming, please, and put Carnegie Hall in the subject so i don’t get scared:)

Avatar Image says:

I submitted everyone in my family and all my friends and I live in New York and have such easy access to Carnegie Hall, but, of course, I never win anything.

I’m a little bitter, but congratulations to everyone who was drawn.

It seems that they won’t really be calling people for much longer, since some people in this discussion have said they were informed by Scholastic on Tuesday. Monday is a vague hope for me. :(

Avatar Image says:

Akakoa, you are NOT the oldest HP fan. Trust me. I’m 58. So there.

And I was jumping up and down screaming when Scholastic called me.

Avatar Image says:

Melissa, email Mandy as she needs an adult to go with….could work..

Avatar Image says:

i dont really care if i win or not. im just happy for all those kids in new orleans. they deserve it! =]

Avatar Image says:

yeah, Melissa, you should e-mail me. since you live in New York, maybe i can stay with you and you can be my tour guide since i’ve never been to New York, in exchange for the free ticket.

Avatar Image says:

well, i mean i would love to win but i never win anything and clearly this isn’t my time to meet jo. but it’ll come someday, even if i have to hunt her down myself. (haha, jk.)

Avatar Image says:

Maybe I should go to sleep…I don’t think they’re going to call at 2 in the morning. There’s still hope, right?

Avatar Image says:

They’re calling until Monday? Fabulous, now I don’t have to completely give up hope. I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high, but it’s so hard for me not to do so.

Avatar Image says:

hi everyone! i got the call today around 4pm Pacific time, so maybe they’re still calling people for a few more days… They told me I have a week to respond, so I’ll bet that they’re calling until the get 1,000 people that will commit to going. GOOD LUCK!! I’m so excited! :)

Avatar Image says:

OMG! I won! I won! Well, okay, I entered my relative and she won… but she’s taking me, so yeah! squees

Avatar Image says:

I won as well! I’m almost as old as the others – 39! I’ll be taking my 9 year old son. There is still hope because Vicki from Scholastic told me that if I turned the tickets down (and I had a week) they would give them to someone else. I can’t transfer them to anyone (not that I would!). So, I’m sure some people won’t be able to make it to NYC (I just booked hotel and airfare and it’s not cheap) so there may be tickets available next week as some winners turn them down.

Avatar Image says:

I entered all my immediate family, and didn’t realize until late last night that my parents couldn’t reach a couple of their voice mail numbers because they were on their way to visit me. D’oh! So if Scholastic called after 2 PM on Friday, I’ll have to wait til Monday to find out. The suspense is killing me!

I wonder if they’ll be calling over the weekend? If anyone hears from them on Saturday or Sunday, please please let us know. That way I might still have some hope of getting a call on my own phone, and screaming off the poor Scholastic rep’s ear while jumping up and down and annoying my downstairs neighbors. :D

Avatar Image says:

Yea- We are underage so we have to go with parents :( I’m so upset they won’t let me have her ticket!

Avatar Image says:

Hey Mandy give me your e-mail and I’ll try to work out this whole thing out with my family. I’m 19, so this should all be good. My boyfriend and I could most likely pick you up from the airport. But we can work out all the details privately.

Avatar Image says:

They’re calling people until Monday? Then there’s still a reason to hope! Thanks Kristen!

Avatar Image says:

some1 take me :(

Avatar Image says:

Has anyone heard from them today yet?

Avatar Image says:

I WON!!! I got the voice mail after gettign off the subway, as you no service when you are underground! I literally started screaming for joy in the middle of downtown bosotn with people watching! It hasnt even sunk in!! I got to say thank you to leaky, pottercast, and whoever posted (prob sue) the news about the sweepstakes! If it wasn’t for you I would not have sent in my application, and i wouldnt have won!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! X) !!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

Kraz about Harry, they called you today?

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, that’s what I wanted to know. However, it IS the weekend, so there probably will be no calls today. Maybe they’ll just resume the calling on Monday.

Avatar Image says:

Tahnks Didir…it is nice to know I am not the oldest fan…whew…I left my voice mail confirmation with Vicky but I get the feeling that they(folks at Scholastic) take the weekend off. So they will start again on monday and good luck to all..

Avatar Image says:

I won! i talked to Vicki the nice Scholastic lady yesterday (friday) in the morning and i asked her how many calls she had left to make to winners and it was over 200. i said that at least she got to give a lot of people some happy news!

Avatar Image says:

So, as of Friday morning they had 200 people left to call, and they’d been calling all week…so there’s still some hope left…and she said they’d be calling people on Monday too…

Gah. Is it sad I’m still hoping to be called?

Avatar Image says:

It’s not sad at all! I am still hoping to be called too. I got a call from an “unknown” number yesterday and got all excited. I answered and the guy said ‘Hi, is this Melissa’ and I’m like ‘YES….’ but it was something totally different. I was so incredibly disappointed, but I’m still hoping. And if anyone has an extra ticket I would love to go ;) I am in LA, but can meet anyone in either Philly or NYC to go!

Avatar Image says:

So are people still being called? There’s hope!

Avatar Image says:

I would pay someone to take me!

Avatar Image says:

Are they still calling people today then?

Avatar Image says:

I think they take the weekend off b/c someone called them yesterday to see if they were still calling people and no one answered. So they’ll call the rest of the people (aka us) Monday.

Avatar Image says:

Does anyone know if they’ll be picking runners-up to go if/when someone says they can’t go? Oh my gosshhh I didn’t know it was phone calls and I entered some people I know in New York and I’m SO nervous because if they got called they won’t realise what it is!

Avatar Image says:

Is there still hope for some of us? I really hope so. I want to win this so bad. I got so dissapointed that I didn’t get called on Friday lol but maybe there is still a chance. Gosh I hope I get it.

Avatar Image says:

I know, I would love to go and see her! I want to win this so much, I hope their is still a chance for us!

Avatar Image says:

Margaux – Yes they are picking runners up if somebody can’t go.

Avatar Image says:

My heart is BREAKING…I’ve heard nothing!!!

Avatar Image says:

I want to win this so bad

Avatar Image says:

Kristen- Thank you. That gives me some more hope. aaaah everyone cross their fingers!!! I want to win this so much, and it’s so hard because it’s just pure luck. Meeting her tops meeting even the most famous of actors or musicians or anything of the sort, doesn’t everyone agree?

Avatar Image says:

I totally agree! Oh wow, I want to go so badly! Good luck everyone! I just realized that if my little sister won, than I wouldn’t be able to go because she would have to take one of our parents. She isn’t even that big of a fan of HP; I entered her so that she could give her ticket to me if she won. Oh well. My mom is a huge fan, so she would get to go! And yeah, they would be taking a break over the weekend to spend time away from work. And there is still some hope fo rus, because nto everyone will be able to go, and they might not even be done calling the original winners yet.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, Haydn I was going to do what you did with your sister for my two little sisters, but then I realized they wouldn’t be able to give me the ticket so I just entered myself, my mom, my dad and my older sister (everyone over 18 in my family).

Ah, there is still hope! I would love to go, even though I learned the movie theatre I am working at is opening on the same date! Oh well, we’ll see. Good luck everyone! Hopefully another of us gets the lucky call! :)

Avatar Image says:

So, I’m over 18, if I win, can I bring my little sister who’s 15?

Avatar Image says:

If I don’t win im thinking about standing outside carnegie hall just to get a glimpse of rowling.

Avatar Image says:

Bob- yeah, that works if you live there. Lucky.

Avatar Image says:

Yay! I made the 100th comment. John, Melissa, Sue, have any of you guys won?

Avatar Image says:

Yeah. Lauren, I am pretty sure you can. A minor can go as long as they are accompanied by someone who is over the age of 18. If you get the tickets, you have such a lucky sister…

Avatar Image says:

Haydn, I hope we both win…we’ve been on here for days, lol.

Avatar Image says:

Me too… I have been obsessing all weekend. It’s been imposible for me to do my homework. Of course, school should be cancelled until all of the winners are announced.

Avatar Image says:

Does anyone know how many entries Scholastic received? I’m thinking this wasn’t that well publicized, so possibly not as many as they did for the Moonlight Signing one. I know Bloomsbury got about 80,000 for that, I’m hoping Scholastic got less for this. Especially cause you had to enter by snail mail too. Yeah, willing to cling to any tiny little shred of hope here. :p

Avatar Image says:

No clue on how many entries they got…we could ask one of the cool people who won, they might know.

Yeah, I haven’t done any homework either. I should, since I’m just sitting here refreshing the comments page. I noticed that jared seems to have abandoned us.

Avatar Image says:

I am coming back here every hour to see if there is any updates on this! When ever the phone rings, I pretty much freak out. haha.

Avatar Image says:

I don’t think they’re calling ppl over the weekend. No one’s been on saying they’ve won, and someone said earlier they called Scholastic and no one answered. So I guess they’re going to keep calling Monday. But I’m bored out of my mind, so I’m still here.

Avatar Image says:

Well, I really hope they still have people left that they need to call. Did they say they were going to call the rest on Monday?

Avatar Image says:

Bah, every time the phone rings, I jump up to answer it, and then am very disappointed when I realize it’s not Scholastic. At least there’s a chance tomorrow, and if they need to choose runners-up. Lauren, I really hope you win!

Avatar Image says:

Thanks Elizabeth! You too! Yes, they said they’re going to keep calling on Monday. Of course, I didn’t know that until late Friday, so I was totally depressed until I heard that.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, Jared did leave us… oh well, he’ll come back tomorrow. Well, I successfully completed studying for some tests, so I seem to have overcome my procrastination. Yeah right. Someone said, I think Kristen, that they were still calling people on Monday. Even if they aren’t, some people are bound to be unable to attend, so somebody will get their tickets. I feel so sad for those who won but then can’t go. I hope everyone gets the tickets! So sad that it’s impossible… Good luck, though!

Avatar Image says:

Me too. I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high, but it’s really hard not to. It’s JO ROWLING! I should probably do my schoolwork too, but this is much more entertaining than studying for Chemistry!

Avatar Image says:

I wish we could all get it!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, Nicole! Well, we all know this week. I’m so nervous! Same with me, Elizabeth! I knew from the get-go that it would be so unlikely for me to get a ticket, but I was so sad on Friday until I read the comments. I’ll brace myself for tomorrow, so I won’t be TOO sad. lol, it’s not gonna work. But there’s always hope…

Avatar Image says:

Aww. Well, I hope you win too, Haydn! It seems like you and Lauren have been on here all weekend! Maybe I would feel a bit better if we just knew what the odds of winning were. Or on second thought, maybe not… Bahh, this is just driving me insane!

Avatar Image says:

Lol, yes, we have been here all weekend. I have aerospace homework and chem homework…and 2 tests to study for. But I don’t really want to do it, until I know for sure whether I won or not. I hope we all get it…there’s only a few of us on here.

Avatar Image says:

All hardcore Harry Potter fans should automatically win! :]

Avatar Image says:

Yes! Absolutely. So, maybe we should turn this into a real discussion about HP. What’s everyone’s favorite book?

Avatar Image says:

With me, that’s constantly changing! But Deathly Hallows is my current favorite.

Avatar Image says:

Oh, DH was my favorite by far. It was so excellent! There were so many emotional and powerful moments in the series. I just reread it today, actually. And about the hardcore fans: Yes! There should’ve been a questionnaire or something. For younger kids, this shouldn’t apply, but for those of us above the age of twelve, it could’ve gone like this: Do you know what PotterCast and/or Mugglecast is? Is Wrock a typo? etc., etc.

Avatar Image says:

Ha ha. I completely agree!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, I think mine was PoA, but now it’s DH.

Avatar Image says:

I was so upset on Friday when I didn’t get a call but thank God I came here to read the comments otherwise I wouldn’t have known they were continuing calling people. Now I have a little hope back lol

Avatar Image says:

I really liked Deathly Hallows. I started reading the series over and I’m up to PoA. It’s so cool when you go back reading it and you can make connections to the final book.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, me too. I felt awful until I came here.

Avatar Image says:

Yep, i’m rereading too. I’m on HBP. I noticed a few cool things…in OotP, Petunia is like ‘they guard the wizard’s prizon, azkaban.” right? then she’s like “i heard that awful boy telling her about them years ago.” She was talking about Snape! I read that and was like ah!!! Lol. B/c we thought she was talking about James. And in HBP, Slughorn’s talking about the love potion, and he’s talking to malfoy, and says “when you have seen as much of life as i have, you will not underestimate the power of obsessive love…” I think that’s cool, but it’s kind of a clue about Snape.

Avatar Image says:

My favorite Harry Potter book would be DH. But I do love them all. HP is the best series by far I have ever read. But the Twilight series is pretty good!

Avatar Image says:

Mine has been changing so much lately. It was PoA my whole life, until this last reread, just before DH came out, when it changed to OotP somehow. But then I read Hallows and I was so blown away that I though “omg this is the best one”, but now after knowing how everything ends, Hallows makes SS seems SO much more amazing than before, so I don’t even know any more. All I know is the odd number books are the best ones :)

omgomgomgomg I’m not going to be able to focus in school tomorrow, knowing that they could be calling at any moment. I wish it had been a trivia thing, like timed so that you couldn’t go look up answers, and that way only the hardcore fans would have been entered. Ah for the DH midnight party, I won the trivia contest so I got first place in line and a free deluxe edition. Anyone else get anything crazy like that?

Avatar Image says:

My favorite is OotP by far! Since Scholastic said you could bring a book other than Deathly Hallows to get signed, that’s the one I’m bringing (even if it is rather beat up!).

I hope you guys get some good news tomorrow! I’m so excited—we booked our airplane tickets on Friday night!

Avatar Image says:

They didn’t have anything cool like that at ours…my neighbor and I got interviewed my CNN tho. That was scary. What’s in the deluxe edition?

Avatar Image says:

I wish that we could have written something, proving how much we like Harry Potter or send in a video, with all of the HP stuff you own, then they could pick all of the hardcore fans!

Margaux, I am going to have a hard time concentrating on school tomorrow too, so I made my mom promise me that if they called she would go to my school and tell me!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, actually, Margaux, something weird did happen!

For the DH release party, I was waiting in line outside of Union Square Barnes and Noble for the Jim Dale reading, but we couldn’t get inside because we would break fire codes. So then, around one in the morning, we still couldn’t get in the building, and Jim Dale walks out. Except nobody notices him, until he comes up to my little sister, easily the youngest person in the crowd, and says, “Here you go.” It was a free audiobook!!! And then five seconds later when he turned the corner, my mom said, “Was that Jim Dale?”

It was unbelievable, and so worth standing in line for… five and a half hours.

I knew having a little sister would pay off, somehow!

Avatar Image says:

Wow! That’s so cool! Nope, nothing happend at ours. I got my book, went home, and read the whole thing.

Avatar Image says:

Meghan, I remember Jo saying in some interview that she loved it most when some kids brought her books to sign that were practically falling apart, because it proved they’d read it again and again. I’m sure the same goes for grown-up fans too. :D

My parents are on their way home now and promised to check the voicemail right away and call me if there’s any good news. If Scholastic called any time Friday afternoon, they wouldn’t have been around to hear it. I’m so nervous, I don’t know how I’m going to get to sleep! And I suppose even if there isn’t anything tonight, there’s still a chance one of us could get called tomorrow.

If I do get it, I think I might be so excited I explode, lol. Of course, then I won’t be able to go, so someone else will probably get the tickets….

Avatar Image says:

My favorite book by far is DH. I was crying through half the end, partly because it was so emotional and partly because i couldnt believe it was the last book.

I definately agree that they should have had some way of us proving we are hard core fans, I could have sent them this 10 page paper I wrote about HP fandom or another one that I’m in the process of writing (I love to write haha).

I’m praying that we still have a chance, maybe if people can’t go. But I’m so happy for everyone that is going, you have to give everyone who can’t go full reports!

Avatar Image says:

If we were allowed to bring more than one book, I would totally bring all of mine. They’re in pieces. And hot glue doesn’t help. Actually, my copy of GoF has been in pieces since 6th grade. I remember when the binding split and I was like NOOOOOO! Haha, and now I’m a freshman in college. time flies.

Avatar Image says:

Lauren, I forgot, I got interviewed too! It was on the news the next night, but I didn’t see it because I was still getting through DH. I think I was around “The Sacking of Severus Snape” right then, so it was pretty intense. A ton of my friends saw it though, and since I had an absolute “OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD” attack right in the middle of the interview and they broadcasted it, it was pretty embarassing. Actually, my mom is buying the video, so now there is a hard copy of my insanity.

The Deluxe Edition is in a special box, has different cover art, and has all of the chapter pictures blown up to full page size in the back. It also has one additional colored picture in the front (this one is of Snape and Yaxley walking into the Malfoy Manor; you can see the peacock) and it also has one additional black and white picture of the trio in Dumbledore’s office.

Avatar Image says:

I won the trivia contest at the midnight party I went to, but I didn’t get anything! Congratulations to everyone who has won! I can’t wait to read reports. And good luck to all of us who haven’t gotten a call yet. :)

Avatar Image says:

I wasn’t interviewed, but people were where I was at. Apparently Keith Olbermann interviewed some of the fans who were waiting in line for days,

Avatar Image says:

Margaux, what did they interview you about? They asked us if we’d read the last page/chapter first. We were like “omg no! why would we do that?” and the lady seemed all disappointed, lol. But I wasn’t about to ruin a 10 year journey by skipping to the end.

Avatar Image says:

Good night everyone, off to watch “Rar Window” with my dad. Best wishes tomorrow.

Avatar Image says:

That’s so cool that they interviewed you guys. I was at a midnight opening in pittsfield, massachusettes at Barnes & Nobels bc that’s near where my camp is and at midnight I put my ipod on really loud because I read somewhere online that some people get the book and open to the last part and yell out what happens because they have cruel twisted minds and think its funny…but nothing happened, it was just to be safe.

Avatar Image says:

Best wishes to you too, Haydn. Let us know if you get the call!

Avatar Image says:

Does anyone know what time Scholastic may call?

Avatar Image says:

becky, that did happen last time. Someone skipped to the end of HBP, and then drove past the book store and yelled to all the ppl waiting outside “Snape kills Dumbledore!!!” So yeah, we got out of the bookstore as fast as we could.

Avatar Image says:

Jackie, prolly any reasonable hour of the day. Someone said they got called at 10 am. So yeah…I’m off to do homework, good luck everyone! I’m sure I’ll talk to you either very late tonight or tomorrow.

Avatar Image says:

Ugh, I hate people like that. It’s just stupid. But I was so glad I was able to go at midnight because I had never been able to go before because I had always been at camp on the day it came out, but since I was a counselor I was able to go out, it was fantastic, such a great experience. And I was up all night reading, not too good for teaching the next day but it didn’t matter haha, I read at every moment I got.

Avatar Image says:

This is all I’m going to be thinking about at school tomorrow. lol I think I’m going to go and good luck to everyone! :) I’ll let you know if I hear anything. :crosses fingers:

Avatar Image says:

I didn’t mention this but I got to go to JKR’s last reading in NYC for HBP. It was incredible to see her in person, not up close but still. She read the chapter when Dumbledore and Harry went into the pensive and saw when Dumbledore told Voldemort (Riddle) that he was accepted to Hogwarts. And then she answered questions, my favorite was “What would Hermione see in the Mirror of Erisad?” and she said, “At this point she would probably see herself, Ron, and Harry safe as well as herself closely entwined with a ‘certain someone’” That made me smile so much. haha

So I’m glad I got to see her read once, so I’m not too upset if I don’t get to go (well yes I am), but I’m happy for everyone else that gets the experience.

Avatar Image says:

I don’t understand people like that. My mom said to expect spoilers, so I brought my iPod with me, and listened to “Hedwig’s Theme” as loudly as possible. Ahh, DH was just so beautiful.

Avatar Image says:

Becky, that’s amazing! Just to be in her presence… Wow.

Avatar Image says:

Becky, I was at the last reading, too! Wasn’t it just incredible?!

I’m also lucky because Jo has written back to me personally three times! I’m so glad that I’ll finally get to meet her—even if it is only very briefly!

I was called at 10 AM, but that was MST (we’re three hours behind NYC time here in Phoenix).

Avatar Image says:

That’s incredible. I must admit, I’m rather envious. You’re so lucky!

Avatar Image says:

Meghan, she has written back to you personally?? I am sooo jealous! The most recent paper I’m working on I’m hoping to send to her, it’s basically about how Harry Potter changed my life haha. I am praying that I’ll get a letter back, I didn’t even know that she did that. What did you write to her about (if you don’t mind me asking)? I desperately want to meet her but it’s all luck so hopefully I’ll get tickets of someone who can’t go but otherwise I’ll have to wait for another chance.

Avatar Image says:

I really just told her how much of an inspiration she is to me and thanked her for writing her weight rant on her website. Good luck with getting a reply!

Avatar Image says:

becky and meghan-

I was there too ;) 2nd night! still waiting for my call…. Night everyone! my thoughts are going to be on my phone tomorrow!

Avatar Image says:

Aaah, I am also finding homework quite difficult with this contest still looming over me, Haydn and Lauren!

Meghan, I have never received a personal reply from JKR, only two generic letters. The last time I wrote was after OoTP or GoF…I wonder if she would reply if I wrote now, now that it is all over…

Again, good luck to everyone! Try to get a good night’s sleep in spite of this crazy waiting!

Avatar Image says:

Wowow. I wrote once but never heard anything back. sigh What did she say?

Avatar Image says:

I would DIE if she wrote back to me! I have written her two times now, but I got preprints back twice. I am going to try writing to her again this winter, hopefully she wont be getting as much letters then. Good luck to everyone, for tomorrow!

Avatar Image says:

When I talked to Vicky, I asked how many people entered. She said they didn’t count them, but about 25,000 entered.

Avatar Image says:

that’s better than I had hoped! We have a 1:25 chance, then! And it’s almost Monday! We all better win!

Avatar Image says:

So…I guess everyone went to bed. Or just left. And I’d just like to add, mugglenet hasn’t had anything up about this yet. Why?!

Avatar Image says:

I think I scared the girl from Scholostic, Becky, to death when I screamed at her in excitement when i’d won!! She called my cellphone and I almost did not answer because my caller ID said the number was unavailable or something. I got the call mid-day on the 13th, around 3pm or so. I went into my local Borders yesterday to pick up a sightseeing book on New York, (I haven’t been since 1999) and told the workers there and they all begged me to come back with pictures! I CANNOT WAIT!!!

Avatar Image says:

Only 25,000? Sweet! Thanks for the info, Ginny.

So we all have a 1 in 25 chance. And I entered all my immediate family, so I have 5 chances between myself and people who are obligated to take me. I guess that’s a 1 in 5 chance here? I don’t know, I hate statistics and probability. 1 in 5 sounds pretty good though, unless you turn it around and say it’s a 4 in 5 chance of not hearing anything. Oh well, still better odds than I’d thouht.

Good luck today, everyone! Hope some of us get phone calls and scare our neighbors/classmates/teachers/coworkers/pets/etc with happy screams, hehehe. :D

Avatar Image says:

Ok guys, it’s morning. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for all of us, and let’s PLEASE get some good news today, yeah?

I’ll try to check the comments while I’m at school, to see if anyone else has won. Best of luck to you all (and myself =P)

Oh, and Laurnen, about the interview- they asked me when I started reading the series, why I loved them so much, what had I won? and blah blah blah. I was way to excited to have Deathly Hallows in my hand to care what I was saying :D

Avatar Image says:

1 in 25???? that’s a much bigger chance then i thought! YAY… I’m SO going to be not concertrating in school today..

Avatar Image says:

From what I have read, it seems they have been informing people all week and they said on the website that they would call on the Friday. I think that’s kind of weird.

But good luck everybody. I hope we all win.

Avatar Image says:

Nothing? Anybody?

Avatar Image says:

Maybe we were wrong. Maybe we were just being overly optimistic.

I’m demoralized.

But still about four hours (I’m in Eastern time)until five when the work day probably ends at Scholastic.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah…the website says they’re still calling people…but no one’s won today, as far as we know. But there’s still time, right? Maybe the other people are at school or work and can’t get online. But I’m losing hope about being called. : (

Avatar Image says:

I’m at school right now, and I’ve been checking all day, but I haven’t heard of anyone being called either.

There’s still hope though. And someone said they had until the 19th to accept, so maybe people will still be called this week, like runners up.

We can’t give up hope until we know it’s over

Avatar Image says:

Well, it’s true they’ll choose runner-ups if the need to, but honestly, if you won, what’s the chance you would be like “I can’t go, give my tickets to someone else?”

Avatar Image says:

Sorry. I think I just crushed everyone’s last hope.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, we were being too optimistic. I don’t know… Maybe some people will be too busy, or they can’t find a hotel, or any number of reasons? It’s okay though. We’ll get detailed reports.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, everyone who goes better transcribe word for word what J.K. Rowling said in answer to every question and people better ask good questions, not like “Are Harry and Voldemort related?” YES THEY ARE, NOW IF YOU READ THE BOOK MORE CAREFULLY YOU WOULD KNOW THAT AND ASK QUESTIONS THAT ACTUALLY MEAN SOMETHING, please.

I wrote down about 100 unanswered questions about DH and the entire series after my fifth re-reading of DH (I know that’s insane, but I needed to cope with my loss somehow) and I hoped to ask at least one of those at this thing, but oh well.

Avatar Image says:

I also think many of the people who won who are very young (7-11), might not be able to attend because their parents might not be able to take off from work, etc.

I believe that leaves some more vague hope for the rest of the us.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, aybe. Except even I did get to go, my mother would be arriving from the airport on that day and it would be hard for me to get to New York. I do have a cousin who lives there and a couple of friends, so it might work out… Oh, why am I planniing this? I don’t even have tickets! Being an on and off optimist is not fun.

Avatar Image says:

I was thinking all day about this…. Sigh. losing hope… But I’m not admitting it’s over till 6 or 7 tonight at least lol! i don’t want to give up.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, I was thinking, maybe some parents let their kids enter thinking they won’t win, and then they won’t be able to go. Melissa, I wrote down a bunch of questions too. Here’s an example of a stupid question someone asked Jo: “Is there a connection b/t the sword of Gryffindor and the Sorting Hat?” I read that and was like omg where have you been?

Avatar Image says:

Yeah questions like the one you mentioned, Lauren, infuriate me to the umpteeth degree. I mean, I am not saying that my questions are brilliant, but at least they cannot be answered and I do not just need to be a better fan! I don’t want to sound like a snob either, but I want to know things that aren’t in the book already!

Maybe I’ll just send her a letter every day to JK until at least one of my hundred are answered because that’s really how desperate I am.

Avatar Image says:

I just got back from school. I haven’t heard anything either. I won’t completely give up hope, though. Accepting that I haven’t won is just too hard.

Avatar Image says:

I’m Sitting her thinkng that threis no chance I am going to get called. How depressing. My best friend Won, but she has to bring a guardian…...sucky rules.

How stupid can you be? You have the greatest author ever there and you wast a question like that? Humph

Avatar Image says:

Kathleen – the same thing happened to me. i entered my best friend thinking if she won we could go together, but she has to bring her guardian :(

Avatar Image says:

So no one’s heard anything today? I don’t know if that makes me more hopeful, or less. Cause maybe the person who was supposed to be making phone calls was out sick? (Yeah, right.) I dunno, I won’t lose hope completely until they say that all the winners have been notified, but I’m a lot less hopeful now than I was all weekend.

Avatar Image says:

Well, I am not feeling so good about my chances at this point, so I’m just going to accept defeat. For those still hoping, keep the faith! Congrats again to all those winners…you are truly lucky ducks! :)

Avatar Image says:

I just got back from school, and no one has called yet. Do you think that they have called anyone else today?

Avatar Image says:

I just got back from school too and found two missed out-of-area calls. They’re leaving messages, right? I hope so, because if I missed my once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet JKR because the phone wasn’t answered…

Congrats again to all winners! I guess that nobody has heard anything today, right? I’m guessing Scholastic is closed by now for the day. I still won’t give up hope, though-we have till the 19th, runner-ups will be chosen, etc. But Lauren is right-even if you couldn’t go, wouldn’t you give your tickets to a family member or friend?

Avatar Image says:

Woah…I don’t know why some of my post is striked-out…sorry about that.

Avatar Image says:

Hello, I just had a small little favor to ask any of the winners… I’m not asking to take me with you or anything but I was wondering if maybe, if your going with another person or family member that may not be a fan of Harry Potter…could you perhaps get me an autograph book of deathly hallows… I’d pay u and whatever… Please let me know. That’s second best from going. -Jared K.

Avatar Image says:

I don’t think you’re allowed to give your tickets away if you couldn’t go, Becky. You have to be there to pick them up at Carnegie Hall. If you can’t go, you have relinquish them to Scholastic so they can give them to runners-up. A lot of people probably didn’t read the rules clearly enough and will give them away and then when they get to Carnegie Hall will be sent away and then because they didn’t carefully read the rules, denied us an opportunity to go.

Avatar Image says:

I’ve been wondering if they might be doing this college admissions style — like, estimating 90% of the people they call will be able to go and calling about 1100 people, figuring if it’s a few dozen more or few dozen less they’ll still be able to seat them. I hope not, cause that would definitely mean all the winners would have been notified by now, but I can also see how it makes sense from an organizational standpoint.

I don’t know how people could pass up the opportunity though. I mean, money shouldn’t be an issue because both people who go would get an autographed copy of the book, and that alone is worth $6,000–$8,000 each, I think. Oh well, I should probably just admit defeat and stop dwelling on possibilities anyway….

Avatar Image says:

People can’t give their tickets to anyone else.

I know it’s a slim chance, but does anyone know what happens if someone says they can’t go after they’ve announced all the winners?

Avatar Image says:

Actually, an autographed book is much less than that. 1000 or less I would say unless it is a first edition. I really hope I win!

Avatar Image says:

I didn’t get a call today either. Do you think they actually called all the winners on Friday? Has anyone spoken to Scholastic?

Avatar Image says:

Becky – You’re not allowed to give them to family or friends. Only you can go.

Avatar Image says:

If anyone finds out any info if they’ve called all of the winners or not please post here. Thanks :)

Avatar Image says:

I have been thinking of calling scholastic about the amount of winners left to be called. Does anybody know the phone #?

Avatar Image says:

Try this, 1-800-SCHOLASTIC

Avatar Image says:

Thx for the number. I should have guessed. I called and I got a message that said each button on the phone brought you to a different area. No # was about sweepstakes so I just clicked for assistance. It did not connect. I guess Scholastic is closed now.

Avatar Image says:

S- I have another number It was on the press release about the contest Kyle Good: 212 343 4563

Its our best shot, at the moment, I think.

Avatar Image says:

ugh i just rechecked, it closes at 7

Avatar Image says:

shoot, we missed by like 5 minutes!

Avatar Image says:

Hey, why don’t we ask one of the cool people who won to ask? Not that they’re on here anymore. i’ve been at class since 3 and I’ve been dying the whole time. But no phone call. I don’t think anyone heard from them today. I would totally pay someone for an autograph/book/ticket. But we shouldn’t lose hope, there’s always the chance someone can’t go. But it’s a slim chance. Jared, is that a real #, or just a guess?

Avatar Image says:

its a real number, i checked on the site.

Avatar Image says:

I just called the number you suggested and found out that nobody who can answer my question is there. The person told me to call back tomorrow and gave me a new number. I will call after school and tell how it went.

Avatar Image says:

sob My phone just rang and I dove for it and it was just my roommate…

Avatar Image says:

What do you mean, they couldn’t answer the question? Either there’s people left, or there aren’t.

Avatar Image says:

Oh…they’re not there, are they? Ahhhhh they need to work later or something.

Avatar Image says:

The website still says they’re contacting people. If that makes anyone feel better.

Avatar Image says:

I do hope they are still calling people. Whoever knows better post because I am getting desperate. At least the web site still says that. It makes me feel a little bit better. :)

Avatar Image says:

so, this is to all the people on the last page(5) who were saying they had some good questions for JKR: would you share them with me? at least a couple good ones?

Avatar Image says:

The two things that are bugging me: Who is Draco’s wife? What did they do with Voldemort’s body?

Avatar Image says:

S, would you send me the number they gave you? I’d like to call for myself, because I also have another question for them. My email address is there :) Thank you.

Avatar Image says:

Just kidding, my email address didn’t show up. It’s swmnhpfan@hotmail.com Gracias :)

Avatar Image says:

those are good questions, Hannah. it made me remember one i thought of at the end of DH: is Neville married, and (i think someone else mentioned this earlier) who did George marry?

Avatar Image says:

As much as I’d like to know who Malfoy and George married (and I’m serious, not being sarcastic here) I think that it’s kind of pointless to ask, because it’s probably people we don’t know. Not all of them could marry their high school sweethearts :)

I miss everyone who died. Remus and Tonks were my favorites, even in Order, before anything happened between them.

Avatar Image says:

Dose anyone think tat they are still calling people? I refuse to give up hope….....Yet.

Avatar Image says:

The phone # is 212-389-3778. I was told to ask for Becky. Give it a shot!

Avatar Image says:

I want to know what happened to Luna. She was cut out of the Epilogue!

Avatar Image says:

I really wish scholastic would post something that says if they are done yet, and if not, how many they have left! Or, if they have called the runner ups yet.

Avatar Image says:

S, thank you so much :D I’m still keeping this small vauge hope that there’s still a chance I might win. My parent’s think there’s actually a chance, with all of the people who are underage who might not be able to travel. And since they do have a few days to respond, maybe there is some sort of a chance…

Avatar Image says:

what website are you guys referring to that says their not done yet?

Avatar Image says:

also, on the topic of questions i want to ask JK, ive been dying to know since book 5 what in Gods name dudley saw when the dementors came?!

Avatar Image says:

The scholastic website says that the winners are currently being notified. And JKR addressed that question in the livechat thing, she said that Dudley would see himself as he truly is. A cop-out? Debatable, but that’s what she said. And guys, I think the initial winners have been called, but we may be the runner’s up! i’m sure that not EVERYONE could go, even if they were selected.

Avatar Image says:

To add on to what I previously wrote: Yeah, even though the website states otherwise, I think that they’re done callign the initial winners. They will wait to call the runner’s up after the 19th.

Avatar Image says:

Haydn, you’re probably right. And the thing that said they’re notifying the winners came up Friday. So…yeah. I hope to be a runner up…if any of us win, we need to find each other in NYC! We’ve been here for days, lol.

Avatar Image says:

I think we definitely could be runners-up. A lot of people simply cannot afford to stay in NY and kids might have entered and parents absentmindedly signed the form without really thinking of the consequences and what it means to go all the way to Carnegie Hall. I just hope people realize that soon, so we can be runner ups more quickly. I also hope people understand that they can’t give them away and then when they get there they can’t get in and they’ll be empty seats that should be ours. I know I said that before, but that is my biggest fear right now.

Avatar Image says:

Melissa, I totally agree about the parents thing. I’m sure some parents let their kids enter, and when they won realized they can’t go, either because of work because they can’t afford it.

Avatar Image says:

Oh wow, Melissa, you’re probably right! Oh, I am freaked out about that now! I hope everyone read the rules carefully. Being the obsessive person that I am, I read them over and over again.

And since you can’t give the tickets away, there won’t be any contest on PotterCast like for the RCMH tickets… oh well.

Avatar Image says:

Wow that was weird. Sorry Melissa! I was thinking about what I was going to write, and I put your name in the name thing. Sorry! lol.

Avatar Image says:

Well I guess we’ll just have to wait until after the 19th. Unless someone’s going to call tomorrow and find out if they’re done calling people.

Avatar Image says:

I can maybe have my mom stop by Scholastic headquarters during lunch since she works right by there. I will also tell my mom to bribe them to give me a ticket with whatever she has in her wallet, which will be 20 dollars and some metrocards, but I might as well try.

And Lauren it’s totally ok about the name confusion. It was just a little weird to look at. LOL.

And since we all fear the same thing now, maybe we should all remind Scholastic to tell people that explicitly since most people won’t realize it and hate reading fine print and because we are such conscientious people, they will reward us with tickets.

Oh man, I am very desperate and rambling.

P.S. I don’t want to sound mean and hope that little kids won’t be able to go.

Avatar Image says:

S, Jo answered the question about what happens to Luna in at least one of the post-DH interviews. I’m sorry that I can’t remember which one.

Avatar Image says:

No, Melissa, you don’t sound mean. It’s our only hope. Wow we are kind or desperate.

Avatar Image says:

*of. Kind of desperate.

Avatar Image says:

For anyone who still has hope: “The 1,000 sweepstakes winners are currently being contacted by telephone. Check back here in the coming weeks for the list of winners as they are confirmed.” That’s from the website as of when this was posted. I agree with whoever said they’ll leave that up until they’ve called the runner-ups, too.

Avatar Image says:

it sucks that im 15 minutes away and i cant even go.

Avatar Image says:

You could hang out there and wait for JKR to show up. Or try to buy someone’s ticket off them. If I lived up there that’s what I’d do.

Avatar Image says:

I agree… after reading these comments, I wish people would have fully read the rules before entering friends who are under 18. Who signed the entry as a legal guardian if they didn’t realize that whoever signed would have to go with them? I am only 2 hrs from NYC… I wish I was going! :)

Avatar Image says:

Well, when I was younger and I wanted to enter a contest, my parents would tell me not to get my hopes up, b/c a ton of people would enter. They could have signed it, not expecting them to win. And work or something could prevent them from going.

Avatar Image says:

So tomorrow is the deadline for the 1,000 winners to say that are going to the reading. So on the 20th, Scholastic will probably give out the tickets to those who were unable to atten. Let’s hope a lot of people couldn’t go!

Avatar Image says:

hi, I just called scholastic and got really good news. They are still calling people until the end of the week! Don’t give up hope yet. P.S. They wouldn’t tell me how many people are left

Avatar Image says:

Thanks for calling them S!! That’s great news! They should’ve told you how many people are left to call, but whatever. I hope I win! I have been reading these comments for the past couple of days, wanting to get a call. (The problem is that my internet blocks up the phone, so I can’t stay on for long) Congratulations everyone who won!!

Avatar Image says:

YES.. still a small amount of hope! I’ve been checking my phone for messages every time i come home…. and thinking every call will be IT…

Avatar Image says:

Really? Oh wow, this is such good news, S! Thanks for calling! I guess my theory is wrong, but that’s a good thing. At school, I kept on calling my mom to ask if there were any messages at home… I am so obsessive.

Avatar Image says:

S, you’re amazing! Yeah, Haydn, my parents are like “we’ll TELL you if they call.” I’m driving them crazy.

Avatar Image says:

S, what number did you call? I’ll try them too.

Avatar Image says:

$#$#@$#. They can tell you if they have your name or not. And the lady said they still have to re-draw, and by the end of the week they’ll be done with the the people who are re-draw’s, too. So if you don’t hear by the end of the week, you didn’t win. And no, they didn’t have my name. But she didn’t tell me outright…she just checked and said they hadn’t called me yet (duh) and that if I didn’t hear by the end of the week it’s safe to assume I didn’t win. : ( I don’t know how she feels about everyone calling her to see if they won, but…oh, and she said today or tomorrow’s the last day for calling the initial winners, and she’s personally done calling people, but I guess there’s a couple more people making the calls. So to sum it all up: If we haven’t heard by the end of the week, no luck. But they ARE doing re-draw’s. Which gives us some hope.

Avatar Image says:

Lauren, S, you two just gave me hope. I’m going to call and see aaaah >.<

Avatar Image says:

I gave up all hope of winning, but now, I do have a tiny bit left. Winners can’t give their tickets to friends/family, right?

Avatar Image says:

No, they can’t. I gave up hope too until I called. I’m on an emotional rollercoaster here, lol.

Avatar Image says:

omg, there better be a transcript or something of all the answers to the questions!

Avatar Image says:

Good! Thanks, Lauren. Ohh, I hope someone asks her to explain the significance of the veil.

Avatar Image says:

Ok guys, I’ve figured this out: We all need to take a deep breath and chill until Thursday. Ish. They’re aren’t calling anyone new right now, they’re trying to get a hold of the people from the original drawing. The rules said if they hadn’t heard from you by the 19th (tomorrow), they would give away your tickets. The fact that they’re still calling people means that some people haven’t answered. Tomorrow (I think) they Scholastic people will be calling them to say if you don’t call us back today, we’re giving away your tickets. Then they will draw some more people (aka us) and call us. So, none of us are going to hear from them today, because if everyone answered and said they were coming, they would be done calling. But we all have hope because some people HAVEN’T called back, and we will get their tickets. : ) Therefore, there’s hope, but not today. lol.

Avatar Image says:

Lauren, did you call the number that S posted a few pages back? I tried calling but it was past 5 so I think that’s why they didn’t answer =/ My mom and I are going to call tomorrow though.

I just put on my “Have You Seen This Wizard?” shirt (the one with Sirius on it) and I’ll wear my Snape one tomorrow for good luck :)

Elizabeth, I think she told us it was just a veil that the Ministry used to research death, or something of the sort. Nothing particularly important, I don’t think.

Avatar Image says:

One minute I’m hopeful, the next minute I am close to crying. I just want to KNOW! Sigh. Good luck again, everyone. And I think we can assume that by 6:30 pm (or earlier) they are done calling for that particular day.

Avatar Image says:

I called the 212 number, and the person put me through to Becky. But just read what I posted above, I don’t think there’s a reason to call right now.

Avatar Image says:

Oops. I haven’t double-posted before…

Avatar Image says:

So up to the end of this week they are calling the initial winners and also runners up? Let me know if that sounds right.

Avatar Image says:

Margaux, Jo said that? Oh my god, when?

Avatar Image says:

Elizabeth, it was in the books. Or at least implied in them. Um, Jackie. rereads Jackie’s post No. They told the initial winners they had until the 19th (tomorrow) to confirm they’re coming. If they don’t get a hold of them, they’re going to redraw and give their tickets away. Then they’re going to call those people, and they will be done calling them by the end of the week. If we had won in the initial drawing, we’d already know.

Avatar Image says:

I’m sad.

Avatar Image says:

What?! I’ve read the books… more times than I can count. I’m going to feel so stupid…

Avatar Image says:

I mean, the veil was in OotP, but it was never explained. I just assumed it would be in the later books. Obviously, it wasn’t. I realize it’s not important, but I’d just like Jo to clarify what it is. When is its significance implied? Again, you’ll tell me and I’ll feel completely and utterly stupid. :\ Aww, Lauren- why are you sad?

Avatar Image says:

Lol, it’s ok Elizabeth. I’ve read them way too many times. And I think I retain them better than most people…during Potter cast sometimes I hear things that are wrong and I yell at my iPod. Not that that does any good…and anyway, someone usually emails them and they fix it the next show. I’m just a little more obsessed.

Avatar Image says:

some information for you guys still waiting for a call… i was called last friday afternoon (6:45 Eastern time), and vicky told me i had until THIS friday, september 21st, to confirm i would be going. i have a feeling that they are giving everyone a week to respond, so the call-by date actually depends on when you are called. i played phone tag with vicky, but i already told her yes, and she’s sending me a packet of information in the mail now. there is something i have to sign and return, so it really could be a while before they know who can and cannot come and then start making calls to contact the runners up for this. be patient, and you may get the call! GOOD LUCK!! :)

Avatar Image says:

Haha, me too. My friend and I get into arguments over trivial Harry Potter things, like who the Slytherin Seeker was in PS/SS. She said Adrian Pucey, but he’s a Chaser. I’m fairly sure it was Terence Higgs. lol, I’ve read Harry Potter too many times.

Avatar Image says:

sn, we’re just going by what Becky said today. So…yeah.

Avatar Image says:

sn, thank you! Congratulations on winning. Have fun!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, I have a ton of questions. I really hope they all get answered…

Avatar Image says:

Yeah. Again, all hardcore fans should win. I might feel better about my chances if it were an essay contest instead of a sweepstakes. That would probably mean fewer entries too. I’m really, really jealous of any casual fan who enters just to enter, and then ends up winning.

Avatar Image says:

The problem is with contests that judge on talent is that adults probably have a higher chance of winning than a child. Age doesn’t determine how big of a fan someone is, so there really isn’t a fool-proof way. However, I would be so disappointed if, like Elizabeth said, a casual fan won when so many obsessive fans didn’t.

Avatar Image says:

That’s true. I’m sure if it were a contest, they would have an age restriction. Oh, Friday night, when I was feeling absolutely horrible about not getting a call, I came on here, read the comments, and felt so much better. At least now I know I have SOME chance of winning- a very, very small chance but a chance all the same. And knowing that there are so many people who feel the exact same way I do is really comforting. I love Harry Potter fans. :)

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, we’re all still on here b/c we want to be with people who haven’t won, and make each other feel better…lol.

Avatar Image says:

Well, reading others’ comments HAS made me feel better, even if it wasn’t intentional.

Avatar Image says:

So true! It made me feel so much better because I was very disappointed on Friday night. Potter fans are so awesome! Long live the fandom! Lol. After DH came out, I was so worried that the fandom would stop and that HP would be over forever. I love being wrong sometimes.

Avatar Image says:

Oh, there’s no way the fandom’s going to end. Of course we’re going to make our kids read the books, and their kids, ect.

Avatar Image says:

I was worried about the same thing. The fandom will eventually diminish somewhat, but I don’t think it will ever completely end. Harry Potter is just too amazing for that to happen.

Avatar Image says:

Elizabeth, she said it in an interview, maybe the most recent online one (post-DH)? Try Accio-Quote, they should have it. Search veil and study or research, something along those lines.

Oh man, I know how you guys feel. I’m so detail oritented that it’s ridiculous. I’ve screamed at my iPod many a times. The details really do make the books what they are though…

Again, good luck to all of us tomorrow. Only the hardcore fans should have won, for sure. They should have given us some psycho test on the books, and only those who passed could move on to the drawing.

Avatar Image says:

Thanks so much, Margaux. I just can’t believe I haven’t heard of that yet. Bah.

Avatar Image says:

I can so imagine myself converting my house into a bookstore, and then I’ll force my child to stay up until midnight so they can get the next HP book. It would be so hilarious. And you guys are all planning to go to England on September 1st, 2017, right? LOL. It would be so much fun!

Avatar Image says:

I found it. It was in the interview she did with Melissa and Emerson in ‘05. Bah, I’ve read that interview multiple times… I’m feeling rather stupid at the moment. But thanks again!

Avatar Image says:

Haydn, lol YES!

Avatar Image says:

Haydn-ablsolutely! I totally joined that facebook group, too.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, I did too. Whoever thought of that is a total genius.

Avatar Image says:

If I win I’m going to scream and cry and jump up and down and call everyone I know. And on that happy thought, I’m off to study. Talk to you all later~

Avatar Image says:

I’m sure you’ll let us know if you win. Good luck, Lauren. You definitely deserve tickets!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, Lauren, you should totally win! I hope you do, and good luck! Wha tmajor question sdid oyu guys have at the end of the series? Ones that weren’t covered in the post-DH interviews? I wondered what Lily’s and James’s jobs were. Didn’t she say that would play a role in DH?

Avatar Image says:

someone commented before that they would buy someone’s book from them. if you couldn’t go, what would you pay for one of the autographed books?

Avatar Image says:

Haydn, I remember Jo saying that James inherited a lot of money, so he didn’t need a well-paying job. But yes, what about Lily?

Avatar Image says:

still keeping up my constant checking of here and my answering machine… Thank you so much guys!!! for the info and keeping my hope alive!

and on buying an antographed book, I would like it, maybe fork over a 3 didget figure for it, but it would be missing half the fun. it wouldn’t be the same if it didn’t have my name, or i didn’t give it to Jo myself to sign or something like that! half the game’s getting the sig for yourself i think…

Avatar Image says:

Elizabeth, I was thinking that maybe Lily did not have to work because of James’ wealth. Lily and he could have then just fully dedicated themselves to the Order, for as Sirius said in OOTP, back then they had fewer members, less preparation, more opposition (since the First War was in FULLLL swing), and the Order probably needed all the help it could get and two full-time members, unimpeded by a job would have been great. Though, I also believe that Lily had a lot of pride and dignity and would have wanted to work. Who knows? Just a theory.

Avatar Image says:

Thanks Elizabeth and Haydn!!! I hijacked a friend’s computer to check on here, lol. I would pay a lot for the book, but it’s true, it’s not the same as getting it signed personally by her.

Avatar Image says:

the gal from scholastic told me that JK isn’t personalizing the books she signs; autograph only because she has to sign so many. that’s okay by me, though! my problem now is trying to decide which book to bring. they are giving away DH copies, but she’ll sign any of the books. i don’t think i could part with a signed copy, either.

Avatar Image says:

Oh my gossshhh I hadn’t even thought of that. Everyone to King’s Cross in 10 years (minus like 19 days?)

So I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to win this one, everyone. Like it’s all I’ve wanted since I found out about the contest. I would rather win this than have any of my “romantic wishes fufilled” as my friend likes to put it, and I’d much prefer it to anything else good I can possibly imagine. I probably sound desperate and pathetic, but I think you all get how I feel, yeah?

Avatar Image says:

I know what you mean. Right now, this is what I want most out of anything.

Avatar Image says:

OH MY GOOOOOD!!!! I WON!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was sitting in a restaurant with my good friend when my sister and mom called me on the phone to let me know! I thought they were joking because today is the 18th (4 DAYS AFTER?!!! I was so unbelievably happy that I ran out of the restaurant and screamed and cried in the streets of Boston (where I go to college). Before this happened, I was completely upset and was totally convinced that I lost the sweepstakes….but oh my god, I won.

I have been the biggest fan of HP since I was 12 years old…now I am nearly 22 years old and my love for HP and J.K.’s work has not changed one bit! I AM SOOOOO HAPPY! CONGRATS TO EVERYONE ELSE WHO WON TOO!!!

Avatar Image says:

ahh thats awesome naomi!! did they just call you today??

i just read everyones comments from the past two days and im glad to see im not the only one moping around because i didnt get the tickets. ive been reading dh every night before bed…not that that will get me the tickets but it makes me feel better haha

Avatar Image says:

Yeah they called my home phone sometime today! (well, my home is in Los Angeles and I’m at college in Boston now so I have no clue what time they called).

But yes! Stay optimistic Becky! I was so COMPLETELY convinced that I didn’t win, that I couldn’t even look at the leakycauldron website for many days LOL (I was so depressed)! I have no clue if they finished calling the original winners yet but obviously it was proof by the call I got today, that they haven’t quite finished yet :D Good luck!

Avatar Image says:

do you think they will be giving out any tickets at the event because winners have till the event starts-Oct. 19th 3-7p.m. to pick them up. if they dont then who else are they gonna give them to?

“If winner can not pick up tickets or attend the event on specified dates, prize will be forfeited and the prize may be awarded to an alternate.”

(sorry if thats confusing its hard to explain)

Avatar Image says:

Hi Bob -

You should probably call Scholastic to find out how they will deal with leftover tickets. I think they might not hand them out at Carnegie Hall because I think they would first call the original winners to confirm if they’re coming and if not, pick runner-ups and confirm with them.

Avatar Image says:

congratulations, naomi! this is so great. it’s like charlie finding the golden ticket to go to the Chocolate Factory. he was so convinced all the tickets were gone, and then… there’s still hope.

Avatar Image says:

Naomi, are you sure they called you today? I talked to the scholastic lady today and she said she was done calling people…did your mom just get the call today, or did they leave a message and she didn’t get it until today? This messes up what we had thought, since we hadn’t heard about anyone winning since Friday…

Avatar Image says:

If you read the earlier posts, we talked about what happens to the “leftover” tickets. If someone can’t go, they draw another name. We called the lady at Scholastic and no, they’re not giving any out at the event. If you won and said that you’re going to come, they send you this info packet and you sign whatever form was in it or something. And if you don’t they redraw for your ticket. And the lady at Scholastic also told me that by the end of the week they’ll be done calling everyone, runner-ups and everything.

Avatar Image says:

Thanks Sarah!

Lauren – Well, I’m not exactly sure what time they called (since they called my Los Angeles home) but it was definitely sometime around the morning of the 18th. It’s very baffling to me too!

Avatar Image says:

So…are we still holding out on getting tickets?

Avatar Image says:

YES. lol. Even if I did win, though, I am not usre I would be able to go and pick upt he tickets because I live awhile away from NYC. My dad wouldn’t want to take me; he’s not a HP fan. Grrr.

Avatar Image says:

Haydn – According to the rules (unless they have changed), you can pick up the tickets on the day of the reading, you don’t have to pick them up before the 19th.

Avatar Image says:

Geez Haydn, you’re up at the crack of dawn…

Avatar Image says:

So…I going to guess that around now they’re pulling the names of the runner-ups.

Avatar Image says:

*I’m

Avatar Image says:

EEEEEEEEEEEEP! I won I won I won I won I can’t believe it I won. I really want to jump up and down and scream but I’m at work so I can’t but I have this huge silly grin plastered on my face and ZOMG I can’t believe it I won. Vicki from Scholastic called and left a message on my cell at 10:19 this morning, and I have until this Friday (21 Sept) to confirm.

:D

Avatar Image says:

Capella, did she say you were a runner-up or you were original winnder?

I guess I am not a runner-up either if that is the case. **. Yes I just cursed.

Avatar Image says:

Lauren, it seems we are at a loss again. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Avatar Image says:

It is 9/19 and I got a call TODAY that I won tix so yes, they are still calling people :) Hooray!

Avatar Image says:

Melissa, I haven’t called her back yet but I’ll ask when I do. Any other questions people want me to ask while I’m at it?

Avatar Image says:

CB – Can you ask how many tickets are left? Thanks!

Avatar Image says:

Capella, ask her if you’re a runner up, and how many more they have to call. So we know if we should give up or not…

Avatar Image says:

And…who will take me? I’ll pay for airfare or something, TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!

Avatar Image says:

Holy Hufflepuff, congrats Capella! I know how much you wanted it, I am so excited for you!

Good luck, Hadyn, Lauren, Margaux, Elizabeth and all you hardcores out there! You guys have really kept the faith…you make me believe! :)

Ha, that September 1st 2017 at King’s Cross thing is HILARIOUS! I can’t believe I’ll be twenty seven then. How ridiculous! But I’ll be there, no doubt about it.

On Lily and James…did JKR actually say that thing about James and his inheritance? I think that would fit, but I would like to have seem them as Aurors or Unspeakables or Cursebreakers or something. I know it was during the war, but I think those two would want something with excitement.

Also, congrats to Naomi! Wow, so awesome!

Keep faith! :)

Avatar Image says:

Yay! At least one of us won! And yeah I am up really early Lauren. I have to catch my bus at 6:15. Eww. And congratulations Capella Black!!! They’re still calling people, this is very good! Hopefully we’ll get more good news soon. And when I said that I couldn’t get the tickets five days in advance, I thought that we had to get them five days early. on MuggleCast I heard that. They could be wrong though.

Avatar Image says:

Haydn, I think you can pick them up up to 5 days in advance.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, I just checked. My mistake!

Avatar Image says:

Two other people have won. UGH. WHY?

Also I live in NY, so if anyone wants to stay at my house for free, you can. I will feed you and give you a tour.

That sounds crazy, but whatever.

Avatar Image says:

No, it doesn’t sound crazy Melissa. I totally understand…offering to pay for airfare is crazy. Bye-bye bank account.

Avatar Image says:

I want to win! Come on, Scholastic! Call me!

Avatar Image says:

Yes! And me! And Melissa! And Elizabeth! And anyone else I forgot!

Avatar Image says:

I’ve got it. Someone call Scholastic and tell them to look on here and give tickets to the poor, poor people who’ve been on here all week, hoping to be called.

Avatar Image says:

I have to go do massive amounts of homework. Why does college get in the way of my obsession? I’ll check back later and good luck everyone!

Avatar Image says:

College gets in the way of my obsession, too. For example, I have to go to class very soon, and I won’t be back until 6:30. Has anyone called scholastic yet? Haydn, you haven’t called them yet. Do it, do it!

Avatar Image says:

What’s the number? And what should I ask? Do we need to know anything more, like how many people they have left?

Avatar Image says:

It’s the 212 number from a few pages back. Ask how if they’re calling the runner-ups to the Harry Potter contest, and if they are, how many people are left, and when will they be calling? The person who answers’ll probably connect you to Becky, and she can answer. You can give her your name and see if you’re a runner up, if you want. Yeah. I don’t want to call again b/c I gave her my name and she’d probably be ticked that I called again. But yeah. Do it, do it! And I’ll talk to you guys when I get back.

Avatar Image says:

I was freaking out when I came home from school today and saw that there were two messages on the answering machine…but no, none from Scholastic =(

Avatar Image says:

They are still calling people…I got the call this afternoon around 2.

Avatar Image says:

Okay then. My mom is using the phone talking to someone in Denver. But do I need to call? I get really nervous on the phone, for some reason… I don’t know. I am still immature in that respect. I hope I grow out of it. And according to M, he or she got the call, so they are still calling people. There’s hope!!

Avatar Image says:

I want to win so bad but I have not gotten a call. I am just dying a thousand deaths here

Avatar Image says:

Congratulations to those who received a call today. You are so lucky.

Avatar Image says:

it’s been such a long hard waiting week. I wonder how many people today won.

Avatar Image says:

I just got a call today at noon Pacific time, so there’s hope. The nice woman who called said I had until Friday to say yes/no. So after Friday, perhaps they’ll call a new wave? I imagine it might take some people overnight to decide/get permission to come to NYC, especially if they need to fly.

Avatar Image says:

I second that, Jared!

Avatar Image says:

So I just called Kris Moran and I asked how many people were left to call and she said she did not know! How could she not know? I am just annoyed that I did not get a call.

Avatar Image says:

:( I hope there are loads more left (even though i doubt it…)

Avatar Image says:

Me Too

Avatar Image says:

So after Friday, which is the deadline for some people to call in say if they’re going or not, some new people will be called, I think? Now we have to wait a little while longer. Ugh. The madness never ends! How much longer must we wait with anticipation?

I wish they would just say how many people they have left to call. I get so depressed thinking that they’re done calling people, then get hopeful again when more winners are announced—it’s crazy!

Avatar Image says:

Darn it… I just tried to call scholastic and couldn’t get through! did they close up already?? wa…

Avatar Image says:

I called today with no answer. I seriously can’t take this, because I’m living with hope but I don’t know how much hope to have.

But omg I need to win.

And congrats to Capella and everyone else who got called!!!

That’s it. The rest of us are going to win.

Avatar Image says:

I tried calling back twice around 4:30, but I just got Vicki’s voicemail saying she was either gone or on the other line. Hopefully that meant she was notifying lots of other lucky winners, especially from the crazy obsessive thread over here. But I left her a message saying I most definitely wanted the tickets and I’d call again tomorrow to make extra double sure that was confirmed. Whenever I get her on the line, I’ll be sure to ask whether I was an original winner or runner-up, and how many calls they have left to make.

Avatar Image says:

Yes, Margaux. We will win. lol, I hope so! And once again, I just think it is so cool that you won, Capella Black, especially because you were one of the ones on here originally! Adn let us now how the conversation with Vicki goes!

Avatar Image says:

I hope they call me! I wish we all could win!

Avatar Image says:

Congrats to those who one on here. I didn’t get a call. I hope they are still calling though.

Avatar Image says:

It’s weird Haydn…I get nervous on the phone too. I can’t order a pizza for god’s sake. But when the lady said they were stilling calling people when I called Monday, I was too happy to be nervous. The office closes at 7, I think. And yeah, they’re probabaly still calling people and that’s why we can’t get through. I hope.

Avatar Image says:

Should I call again? I don’t know if that’ll make them mad or not…

Avatar Image says:

Thanks, Haydn!

Yeah, I’m pretty phone shy too. But obviously that won’t be an issue in calling back Vicki from Scholastic, lol. Lauren, how do you know the office closes at 7? I just assumed 5, but if it’s 7 maybe I should try again.

Avatar Image says:

You can if you want. I am just too afraid. It’s so irrational, but there you go. Some peope are afriad of snakes, I am afraid of making a phone call to people I don’t know. Oh well.

I keep hearing conflicting information, but if we don’t hear by next Tuesday, I am giving up.

Avatar Image says:

Earlier in the week we tried calling, and someone said the office closed at 7. They might’ve been wrong. I don’t know.

Avatar Image says:

I also have phonaphobia

Avatar Image says:

Although I am so desperate that I keep calling them regardless. Don’t worry, they are nice

Avatar Image says:

I will call, what is the number?

Avatar Image says:

It’s the 212 number…it’s a few pages back. I’ll go look.

Avatar Image says:

212 343 4563. That’s the number.

Avatar Image says:

I don’t think its a very good idea to be giving out scholastic’s number (especially the numbers of the people). I know we’re all anxious and such but it’s not making their job any easier.

Avatar Image says:

I’m not. It was on page 5 or something and they couldn’t find it. And it’s not the number of the people calling, they connect you to them. And they’re closed now anyway.

Avatar Image says:

Oh, yeah. They close at 7. Oh well…

Avatar Image says:

I won too, and I’m SOOO excited! I got the call all the way last Wednesday morning at 9:00 Pacific. I must have been one of the very first people they called!! I was driving to work and answered my cell phone, and I just about had a car accident. The lady said she could see I was in California, and I’d have to pay to fly all the way there and stay in NY, and I could call her back if I wasn’t sure, and the whole time I’m thinking to myself, Are you CRAZY? I’m COMING!! :-)

I’m getting a bit worried, though, because I haven’t received anything in the mail to sign and send back to them. Can anyone else who’s won let me know if they have received an information packet yet? Thanks!

Avatar Image says:

OH MY GOD why can’t you ever smile upon me and give me J.K. Rowling tickets?

On September 21st, according to scholastic.com, will be when the final list of winners is going to be announced and listed.

SO FRIDAY GUYS. GOOD LUCK. GOOD LUCK. BONAM FORTUNAM. BONNE CHANCE. Hopefully saying it in other languages counts.

So, that Friday date also means I will have been on this forum for a full week. YAY!

Avatar Image says:

You’re right Melissa, Friday we’ll have been on here for a week. Sad. We should have a 1 week anniversary party.

Avatar Image says:

So yeah, they’re going to post the winners Friday. But what if they haven’t gotten hold of everybody? Will the just post everybody they have? I plan on counting them, if I don’t get called. I’m very desperate. I want to win sooooooooooooooooooooooo bad.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, I plan on counting them too! we can divide the list and count them together if we don’t get called. We have two days. Good luck. May the force be with us. Off topic, but today in English class we tlaked about modern epics and Harry Potter. My favorite class ever! we discussed Harry’s hero journey, and how he emulated the perfect man. We also compared him to Luke Skywalker and Odysseus. It was amazing. And then we almost got into this argument about the Prophecy, but then we shifted instead to the topic of the Underworld. It was heaven.

Avatar Image says:

Lol. I would love to have a HP class offered here. My school doesn’t, but I know some other ones do…my school doesn’t even HAVE an english department.

Avatar Image says:

I WON THE JKR OPEN BOOK TOUR! AHHH!! I MUST BE DREAMING!

Avatar Image says:

Ah, man, that’s so cool! Is that a high school English class, or college? Harry Potter was but a twinkle in JKR’s eye when I was in high school! :-)

Avatar Image says:

It is a highschool class. And the entire class wasn’t devoted to Harry Potter, but we’re studying epics and greek plays and poetry, so Harry Potter ties in A LOT.

It’s funny, it’s like we talk more about HP than the Odyssey and Antigone.

Avatar Image says:

Well, seriously, who can blame you? :-)

Avatar Image says:

I am actually teaching a middle school HP class. It’s only a fun thing that meets once a week for eight weeks, but it’s still pretty cool. I think this week I’m gonna have them write letters to Jo that I’ll hand over to her when I see her, and maybe she’ll write back! I think that would be pretty exciting for the kids.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, I know. :)

Ugh. I have to know whether I won or not! This is getting ridiculous, I can’t concentrate on homework. HP is so much more fun than epic similes.

Avatar Image says:

Do you think they’ll let us give stuff to her? I was wondering that, too. There will be 5200+ people there. If everyone gives her something, that could be a lot of stuff…

Avatar Image says:

i think its pretty crazy that people are flying from places like california and i admire their dedication to Harry Potter and Rowling. Congrats to all the winners even though im really jealous.

Avatar Image says:

I SERIOUSLY can’t afford it, but I’m going anyway!

Avatar Image says:

Laurie, how do you figure on 5200+? I thought only 1000 winners and 1000 guests….

Avatar Image says:

I think there are 1600 school kids there with their parent/guardian as well.

Avatar Image says:

The school kids have their own nights. Friday is just for the contest winners.

Avatar Image says:

I just looked up Carnegie Hall, and it doesn’t seem to have that many seats, so maybe those kids are coming in the afternoon, and we are coming at night. I’m not sure. I got to perform there with my college wind ensemble about ten years ago! It was amazing!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, so there would only be 2000 people. Still, that’s a lot of presents.

And Capella Black, you should definitely do that for your students! They would love you forever!

Avatar Image says:

Capella, I wasn’t trying to discourage you from bringing your students’ letters!! I think it’s a great idea.

Avatar Image says:

So has anyone who has gotten the call from Scholastic actually received the info packet/ affidavit stuff in the mail yet? (I see that someone else asked that a bit ago, too) I am anxious to see the hard evidence that I’m really a winner. Actually, I won’t 100% believe it until I am actually sitting in Carnegie Hall watching JK walk onto the stage. And even then… maybe not!

Avatar Image says:

the school program in NYC is the same day, but at 11am. so, those students will be there for the 11 am event, and so i think the evening event will be 2,000 people. still…that is A LOT of book signing. what if her wrist is worn out by the end of the night?

Avatar Image says:

Don’t forget about the 1600 people earlier that day. Ouch. She’ll probably have to soak her hand in ice for a long, long, time.

Avatar Image says:

If she gave each of those 2000 people 30 seconds of face time, she would be at it for almost 17 hours. Not counting the reading and Q & A. I’d better think of something real good to say to her during my 2 or 3 seconds, lol.

Avatar Image says:

I’d be like “OMG I LOVE YOU THANK YOU FOR WRITING HARRY POTTER YOU’RE AMAZING!!!”

Avatar Image says:

Gah! I hadn’t meant to post it after that. Then the security people would grab me and drag me off, lol. But I would totally try to give her a letter or something. That’s a really good idea, Capella. Your students are so lucky.

Avatar Image says:

Capella- Can i join your class? Even if i’m a ummm LITTLE old for it? lol 2 days…. nail biting time then mourning till a month after the event…

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, I want to be in your class too! I’ll totally be the best student you’ve ever had. : )

Avatar Image says:

Hey, maybe we can send people who are definitely going e-mails or something with our letters and questions and they can do the same thing Capella is doing, if they are nice enough to give fellow maniac fans a good opportunity.

Avatar Image says:

OMG! Capella figured out the time thing for 30 sec for 2,000 people as an example. that’s a whole lot of time! even if she gave every person FIVE seconds of time, it would be a couple hours of just autographing. wear comfortable shoes to stand in line! speaking of things to wear…what are people going to wear to this? fancy dress? or just fancy?

Avatar Image says:

That is a good question, jks! I don’t even know if I am going, but since I am younger than most people here, I could probably get away with wearing jeans. Just kidding, of course. I don’t know, maybe a nice skirt for girls and women and a collared shirt for boys and men? And I am not too old for Capella’s class, actually…

Avatar Image says:

I’m going to wear something somewhat nice—like I’d wear to church. I can’t believe I’m actually going! I’m SOOO excited!!

Avatar Image says:

Laurie- are you brainstorming like 5000 different questions that you might ask Jo?? or planning/dreaming what you are going to say to her?

Avatar Image says:

Yay, 400th comment! And there are so many questions you could ask her!!! Good luck thinking of one!

Avatar Image says:

Lol, we’ve turned this into a chat room. Yeah, people going, can we send you emails w/ letters to give to Jo? That would be SO awesome!

Avatar Image says:

I have 100 questions written down. I am going to put them in letter/interrogation form and hopefully one of you guys can give it to her while she is signing the books.

I was also wondering, is she signing 2,000 books or just a 1,000 for the people who actually won and not their guests?

Avatar Image says:

And, as a New Yorker, I know what is appropriate to wear at Carnegie Hall. Since this is not an opera or a symphony, you don’t have to get THAT dressed up, but just look presentable. I would wear jeans, my nice boots, a semi-casual blazer. I wouldn’t wear a dress. You can if you want since though this is not a formal occassion, it is really special (hopefully) to everyone attending.

Avatar Image says:

judy garland and liza minnelli performed there and now jk rowling is gonna be there…all my idols.

Avatar Image says:

what about dressing up in costume?

Avatar Image says:

If I won, I would have come dressed up…

Avatar Image says:

If you want to do that, nobody is stopping you. Maybe you should dress up as Bellatrix or Narcissa or Lucius (I don’t know whether you are male or female, jks), since they always would be dressed up because of their noble heritage.

Avatar Image says:

i don’t think i could really pull off wearing a costume or not. i just wondered if people were thinking about wearing costumes or not. i’m coming from far away, though. i won’t have room for any extra clothes in my luggage anyway.

they haven’t said anything about photography… i bet they won’t let us take any pictures.

WARNING: This post contains Deathly Hallows spoilers!

I would love to hear suggestions for questions, although I have a million ideas, myself! I have to say, though, I’m not particularly interested in finding out what happens to the characters after the story ends. I sort of like to imagine that sort of thing myself, and I assume she’ll tell us everything she wants to tell us in the Encyclopedia she has planned. The things I really want to know have to do with her writing process and the thought process she went through while writing. That sort of thing totally fascinates me. I want to know how much she had planned at each stage, and how much changed as she was writing. I’d love to know one thing that would surprise us that she had planned from the beginning, and one thing that would surprise us that she didn’t have planned until the end. I’d love to know what problem cropped up in Book 4 that she had to do so much rewriting for, and why Peter Pettigrew is listed as the DADA teacher for year 5 in her notes on her website, and… lots of things like that! I’m amazed at the planning, and I’d love to hear more about how she accomplished it all.

I’m also a Christian, and I’m fascinated by the Christian symbolism in all the books-particularly the last one. I’d love to hear her talk about that. So, maybe not the things everyone would want to know, but now that the books are finished, and I have story-closure, these are the things that really interest me! I also would really love to tell her that my sister guessed that Harry had a piece of Voldemort’s soul in him way back after she read Prisoner of Azkaban-before we even knew about Horcruxes!! Pretty amazing. And a funny anecdote to tell her, if I had time: The first email I read after I read Deathly Hallows was from my sister. It said, “If Lupin’s been dead for the last ten years, then WHO EXACTLY HAVE I BEEN ENGAGED TO??” :-)

Avatar Image says:

What’s with the lines drawn through some of my post? Did I do that without realizing it? Stupid me, I didn’t mean to!

Avatar Image says:

Laurie, I love your sister’s email, lol.

Avatar Image says:

well i gotta hit the hay! Thank you all for keeping my hopes up, and it’s been nice to have an almost support group to get through this! If i don’t get a call, I’m going to call scholastic for more info tomorrow. i’ll post what happens here for sure ;) night!

Avatar Image says:

I’ve not received the packet since I found out that I won either! Hopefully it’ll be coming soon—I’m still so anxious about it all! It seems that most of my school knows now as all of my teachers keep asking me about it! My English teacher from last year (who I TA for this year as she’s amazing) made me tell her freshmen class!

Avatar Image says:

So little time left….so little hope.

Avatar Image says:

Good luck for today

Avatar Image says:

Sniff… Almost no hope lol! And today’s the 20th… 2 months ago we were all going to bookshops to get DH… It seems so hard to accecpt that it was the last book and it’s all over, but at the same time it feels like we’ve had DH for a long time…

Good luck everyone!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, wow, two months. It’s so weird to think that it’s all over. I mean, I’m 18, and I’ve been reading these books since they came out. They’ve been a huge part of my life, and now that’s over…tear

Avatar Image says:

sniffle….

Avatar Image says:

Guys, I cried so much this summer, that I had no tears left. Now I’m going to cry again.

Avatar Image says:

I saw 2 Scholastic trucks this morning (I don’t ever remember seeing Scholastic trucks before)... could it be a sign? :)

Avatar Image says:

Thats odd. I would take that as a huge sign. WHere do you live? The City? Anyway, I am going to give my friend a letter to give her If I don’t win.

2 months? Really? I sure dose not seem that long. Somwthines it seems like we are still waiting for the book and It has not come out yet.

Avatar Image says:

Allentown, PA (the trucks weren’t technically in Allentown but close enough)

Avatar Image says:

I just got my call from Scholastic yesterday and confirmed with a super nice lady today! So yay I won too! I had lost hope reading all the success stories here. I asked the lady I talked to about the packets they’re sending out (i don’t know if someone said this already) but she said they’re not finished yet and they’re all being sent out today. she said the papers need to be notorized and returned by october 1. i’m so excited. i have to find a flight, i’m flying in from orlando. plus, the 19th is my 21st birthday. i couldnt ask for a better present!

Avatar Image says:

Congratulations! And thanks for the information about the packets—I’ll sleep much better knowing mine hasn’t been lost in the mail (at least not yet, anyway!).

Avatar Image says:

So I could get the call today… Oh well. Congratulations everyone! Hopefully there will be more opportunities! And if you do get the call later or talk to any scholastic people today, ask if they;re calling tomorrow or if today is the last day, and how many people are left.

Avatar Image says:

I just called Scholastic…Beacky said they were still calling people, and that tomorrow is the last day – she said most everyone had been called.

Avatar Image says:

Oops meant to say Becky

Avatar Image says:

Okay, thanks Hannah! Oh well… Still hope? Don’t worry, I will get over it tomorrow. :-)

Avatar Image says:

so there’s still a little hope… cross my fingers and toes till they won’t uncross i guess…

Avatar Image says:

darn it again lol… i tried to call again and I couldn’t get through….

Avatar Image says:

I had left a voicemail with Vicki yesterday and tried calling again today, but she was always either out or on the other line when I tried. She did call back and leave me another voice message though, saying I was confirmed and she was mailing the stuff, and unless I had any pressing questions, it would be good if I waited until after I got the packet to call back. So I guess she’s really swamped right now and I’m gonna be nice and not call back.

Avatar Image says:

I hope I am in that last bactch of People to be called. I hope that peopl understand that if you can’t go you have to send the tickets back…...that might be a problem.

Avatar Image says:

I’m losing hope. :(

Avatar Image says:

S, I would keep the faith just one more day. If by about 5 tomorrow you haven’t heard yet, then you can accept defeat. I know how you feel, I am pretty much over it, but there is still this part of me that hopes that there is still a chance. The awesome stories I have heard on here are keeping my hopes up…maybe we could get lucky? Anyone have Felix Felices?

Today in AP Lit my teacher and I discussed how Jane Eyre’s cousin John was like Dudley. Haha…Harry Potter in school. It’s amazing.

KEEP THE FAITH! THERE IS STILL SOME HOPE! ONE MORE DAY! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Avatar Image says:

Yes, at five tomorrow we can all come here and have a pity party. Sounds like fun! But let’s not give up hope yet! We shall prevail! lol. It’ll be okay though.

Avatar Image says:

I hope at least one more of us wins. Everybody who goes must give us all the details! Don’t leave a single word or question out! I am lucky because I went to the reading last year. But I did not get a question in or a signed book, which I really want.

Avatar Image says:

Yes, we’re absolutely going to have a pity party tomorrow. I’ll bring the drinks.

Avatar Image says:

I would die if none of us people in the little support group here didn’t win… One of us has got to! For the sake of grilling them later we need SOMEONE… wa…

Avatar Image says:

I will bring the cookies. I make mean chocolate chip cookies. Oh, I can’t wait until our one week anniversary.

Avatar Image says:

You mean St.John? Who she almost marries? No! I don’t think he’s like Dudley at all! I think he probably cared about Jane in some fashion, just didn’t really love her romantically. I don’t know, though, it’s been QUITE a while since I read that book… :-)

I think it’s SO awesome to hear that English teachers are taking Harry Potter seriously and using examples from the books in their classes! I remember reading Prisoner of Azkaban and specifically thinking how James and his friends were such perfect foils for Harry and his friends, and then thinking-my goodness, I haven’t even thought of the word “foil” in a literary sense in about ten years! I read all the time, but I’m a scientist, so those literary analyzation muscles have sort of…atrophied, I guess… :) I haven’t read anything that has been such a joy to think about in this depth since my AP English class! Calculus is a different kind of joy for me…quantum mechanics, not a joy at all… Harry Potter reminded me again what reading to spot intricacy and depth and connection and meaning – reading for more than just passing pleasure – can do for your soul!

Avatar Image says:

There are those mysterious strike-throughs again! Is it when I type the double hyphen? Let’s try a test, shall we? Mysterious strikethrough begone-. If that’s what does it, I’ll never make that dumb mistake again, I promise! :)

Avatar Image says:

Yep, that was it. :-( Well, now I know.

Avatar Image says:

Aww, Laurie, I love quantum mechanics!

Avatar Image says:

Whata whata?

Avatar Image says:

NOT my favorite! LOVE calculus, though. :-)

Avatar Image says:

Eh…calc is ok, but quantum mechanics is so much more interesting.

Avatar Image says:

Are you a college student, Lauren? What’s your major? I was physics (undergrad) and astronomy (grad).

Avatar Image says:

I have no idea what you are talking about. I am still on algebra

Avatar Image says:

Algebra is fun, too!

Avatar Image says:

Lol. Yes, I’m a college student and a loser. : ) I’m an AE major, but I really love physics. And I’m thinking about doing an astronomy minor (I want to work for NASA, but I would do astronomy b/c it’s fun). I just read a lot and yeah. I’m a loser. For a while I couldn’t decide b/t physics and AE, but I chose AE in the end hoping that would be a better major to go to NASA with.

Avatar Image says:

I didn’t like algebra but omg I HATED geometry.

Avatar Image says:

and…....I don’t know if I spelled that right. I just hate it that much.

Avatar Image says:

I don’t like calc at the moment b/c I’m bored in it. When we actually get to something new I’ll probabaly like it better. I liked it in HS, and I tested out of calc I, somehow. And now I’m in calc II but we haven’t learned anything new yet. So I’m bored.

Avatar Image says:

I wanted to be an astronaut so badly, but my vision is too bad. I got a pilot’s license and everything! AE sounds cool. I probably should have done something like that.

I really didin’t like grad school. I was 3,000 miles away from home for the first time, and suffered from extreme migraines almost daily. Not a fun time for me. Harry Potter helped! :-) I took all the classes for the Ph.D. work in Astronomy and did enough research so that I could have written a thesis, but I never finished. I work at a planetarium now, which is fun, and suits me much better anyway. I have lots of friends from grad school who work for NASA now! My roommate has her office in the Air & Space Museum in D.C. I almost died of jealosy when I found out about that! Another friend works for Goddard in Maryland.

Avatar Image says:

Calc is like that in college. It repeats the AP high school stuff for the first couple of semesters. I think the first half of Calc II in college is the end of High School AP Calc. Are you doing exponential integration, and stuff like that?

Avatar Image says:

We’re probably chasing everyone else off of this message board… :-)

Avatar Image says:

This is so weird, I too majored in Astronomy in college and dropped out of an Astrophysics Ph.D. program. Go figure.

Avatar Image says:

That’s totally bizarre!! What are the odds?

Avatar Image says:

I am not in college yet, but I can’t stand math and science. I love English and history though! I guess I am in the minority here! This year, though,I have a really awesome math teacher, so I am liking math a lot more.

Avatar Image says:

Your right Laurie

Avatar Image says:

A good teacher makes a HUGE difference in math.

Avatar Image says:

sorry for posting that so much. GO HAYDN!

Avatar Image says:

Why do I keep doing that?

Avatar Image says:

I think it might be because you double-clicked. I had that problem too because I noticed that nothing was happening, so I clicked again, but then it got posted twice.

Avatar Image says:

OOPSIE! Thanks Haydn!

Avatar Image says:

geez, I leave for 15 minutes to eat and the comments explode…yeah, I want to be an astronaut. I think my eyesight might be too bad, but I don’t care. Currently, you can’t be an astronaut if you’ve had laser eye surgery, but I emailed this lady at NASA about that, and she said they might change that rule sometime in the near future. She said the air force was researching it. I honestly don’t see why they have that rule. And anyway, I have like 15 years before I have a chance of being an astronaut (I figure 8 years for college, and the rest of the time just getting experience in the field) so I don’t have to worry about that for a while. And when they change the rule, I can get the surgery so even if my eyesight won’t be perfect, it’ll be in an acceptable range. Yep, it’s all planned out.

Avatar Image says:

Thanks you guys! I’ve been reading this all week and not posting. My stomach has been in knots since last week. Everytime the phone rings I freak out and then I realize it’s not scholastic and i want to cry. I’m so paranoid that they have been calling and not getting through. Anyway, I hope we all get called tomorrow and meet each other in New York and freak out when we actually get to talk to J.K.!!!

Avatar Image says:

Welcome, Lisa!

Lauren, they’ve been saying that for years, about the laser surgery. My guess is that they’ll change the rule soon enough. My vision is something like 20/400, so I’m not even close! :-( I think with my migraines, which cause problems (for me, at least) with my eyes being very dry, I wouldn’t have been a good candidate for laser surgery anyway. I’m just waiting for space tourism, now!

You’re coming up on a very exciting time for the space program, with the possibility of going back to the Moon, and everything. Good luck with all your studies, and I hope you get there someday!!

Avatar Image says:

Thanks Laurie! I’m so excited, Jim Lovell is coming to our campus to give a lecture on Wednesday. But yeah, I know my vision is at the best 20/200, and they say your vision has to be at or better than 20/200. Do you wear contacts? What is the number on them? Because I’m not sure what exactly my eye sight is without contacts, they don’t measure that when I get my eyes checked anymore.

Avatar Image says:

So…what’s everyone’s favorite wizard rock band?

Avatar Image says:

I saw Jim Lovell give a talk years ago, and it was fantastic. He signed a copy of his book Lost Moon for me (the one that was turned into the movie Apollo 13)!

I don’t wear contacts anymore, and I can’t remember the number of my prescription. Something like 2.75 or 3. I can’t remember if it’s + or -, but I’m nearsighted.

Avatar Image says:

I love his book. I already have a signed copy, but it’s the version that came out after the movie, so it’s titled Apollo 13. My neighbor works with his son or something, and he gave him the book to get it signed. But I hoping I get to talk to him. I’m going to be late for band practice, because the lecture is from 2-4 and band is from 4-6. But oh well, it’s worth it. And speaking of being late, I’m going to be late for chem lab (boo lame). Talk to you all around 10:30.

Avatar Image says:

Ah, you’re in band too! I can’t believe how alike we are! What do you play?

Avatar Image says:

I have to agree with Haydn. English and History are my favorites. Math is the Bane of my Existance. It’s that bad for me.

Lauren, My avorite Wiz Rock band is Oliver Boyd and the Rememberalls and Harry and the Potters.

Avatar Image says:

Laurie, about Jane Eyre…I was talking about her cousin, John Reed…we’ve only just started reading it. But this St. John sounds nice. I’ll look forward to him. My AP Lit teacher is amazing…wicked funny and smart.

Math of all sorts drives me bonkers, let’s just say I wouldn’t sign up for Arithmancy if you gave me a thousand galleons. I like the social sciences, English classes, History and foreign languages.

My favorite wizard rock bands are the Remus Lupins, Ministry of Magic, The Weasel King, Alas Earwax and, of course, Harry and the Potters.

I really hope one of the hardcores on here gets a call tomorrow…you guys are great! Keep faith and good luck!

Avatar Image says:

I like so many wrock bands! Recently, I became obsessed with the Ministry of Magic… I like all of the Remus Lupins songs, and I love “Dumbledore” and “the weapon” by Harry and the Potters. The Moaning Myrtles are awesome too, and so are the Whomping Willows.

Avatar Image says:

Wow… I have never heard of any of these bands except Harry and the Potters. I don’t listen to a lot of that kind of music, though. John Williams is more my speed! :-)

SuperAgentGirl, Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books, and I seriously don’t even remember that guy. Is he one of the cousins she lives with at the very beginning of the book? Yeah, they were pretty awful! As for the part with St.John… Well, don’t look forward too much. It’s actually the most boring part of the book, unfortunately!

Ah, math. It’s beautiful and elegant. I love the puzzle-solving aspect of it, and the fact that it can be both logical and creative. I guess I’m a lot like Hermione!

Avatar Image says:

Omgoodness How could I forget Whompy in my list. Wow….. I am sooo retarded.

I really hope someone on here gets called. And I will bring the Orange juice and Chocolate cake tomorrow. :)

Avatar Image says:

Yep, Laurie, you’re right. He is one of those cousins at the beginning.

Oooh, I forgot to put Whompy on my list, too! Being that I don’t fit very well in any of the houses, I could join him in the House of Awesome. :)

For our party, I’ll bring cupcakes. If one of us gets a call, I’ll be quite content, even if that person isn’t me.

Avatar Image says:

Oh, and how could I forget my lemon bars? they’re the best thing I make! Actually, now I really want one… lol I am so nervous for tomorrow… I won’t be able to concentrate!

Avatar Image says:

in school, I mean. And I will be very happy if one of us gets the call. You guys all deserve it; you’ve been stressing out and preparing so much for th event! I wiill be optimistic, though. And Capella Black was also on here pretty early on, if I remember correctly, so one of us DID get the call.

Avatar Image says:

Guess what? My best friend just called me and told me that His mother said becuase he did not hand in 2 math homeworks, that we are not allowed for the rest of the year to talk on the phone on weekdays. We don’t see each other in school ever because your sechedules are so messed up and I have the Nutcraker, dance, work, Girl scouts, and babysitting my great grandmother because you can’t leave her home alone, the school play/ technical dance part, Literary Magazine, plus Potterkeepsie- the Harry Potter group my friend an I started.

Okay Rant over.

I am so going to go eat chocolate.

Avatar Image says:

I’m going, too! I got called last Wednesday.

No phone for the rest of the YEAR? That sounds pretty harsh.

Avatar Image says:

Some of my favorite wizard rock bands: Obliviate!, The Remus Lupins, The Parselmouths, Ginny and the Heartbreakers, RiddleTM, The Hermione Crookshanks Experience, Harry and the Potters, The Moaning Myrtles, The Whomping Willows.

On a somewhat related note, my friend and I made a wrock band called Oh My Snitch!, but we only have one song up right now.

Avatar Image says:

I know right! And it sucks becuase I ever get to see/talk to him now.

I am so not going to be able to do any school work tomorrow. I am going to be to nervous! Congrats Laurie!

Avatar Image says:

Thanks, Kathleen! I’m dying of excitement! Good luck to everyone else!

Avatar Image says:

Haydn, yeah, I was obsessing on here for about four days before getting The Call. It’s so surreal, I never win stuff, and I don’t think the full impact of it has even hit me yet, cause I’ve been way too calm and mellow today. But I just keep thinking of looking at my phone yesterday and seeing the missed call from “No ID” and thinking “that’s gotta be Scholastic” cause someone on here said that’s what they showed up as. But I had to teach a class before I could check the message and I still refused to get my hopes up too much, in case it turned out to be a telemarketer or something.

Anyway, I hope some more people from here get to experience that weird dream-come-true sensation tomorrow. Apparently we have to sign some affidavits and get them notarized and send them to Scholastic by 1 October. I wonder if any winners would fail to get that paperwork taken care of and notarized in time, and what would happen to their tickets….

Avatar Image says:

I wanna win really badly but I will be content if one of you win tomorrow and go into immense detail about it. Good luck tomorrow! I have to survive 6 hours of school. Ouch!

Avatar Image says:

Does anybody know what will happen if they don’t turn there stuff in? Do the tickets become availible? Hummmmmm…. Thats going to bug me.

Avatar Image says:

Ditto S. If someone n here wins, I shall be content.

Avatar Image says:

Yay I escaped an hour early from chem lab! Laurie, I play clairnet. What do you play? And my favorite wizard rock bands are The Remus Lupins, Ministry of Magic, and The Whomping Willows.

Avatar Image says:

Lauren- Coolness! i’m a bass clarinet! And one of us HAS to win… we’ve suffered here together, we’ve celebrated here together… and 2 months ago we were all at bookshops counting down to DH… i still can’t believe it’s really over for good and forever…

Avatar Image says:

I don’t know, Kathleen, but if I get a chance to talk to Vicki soon I’ll ask and post her answer here. I’m reluctant to call her though, because she said if I don’t have any really urgent questions, I should wait until I get the packet in the mail to call her … I guess she’s really busy and I don’t want to make her life more difficult….

On the other hand, I know how important every little scrap of information is to everyone on here, so I might think up some urgent questions as an excuse to call, lol.

Avatar Image says:

Ohh how sad…this time two months ago we didn’t know what happened yet in DH, and I was totally dying b/c of the wait. And then I stayed up all night to read it. That was so much fun. It’s sad we’llnever get to do that again. You know, wait for what seems like forever for the next book to come out, and dress up and go to a midnight party, and stay up all night reading…how sad. and….something is exploding outside…wtf….

Avatar Image says:

Sorry, haven’t read all the newest posts from today and last night but Is tomorrow the last day they’re calling??

Avatar Image says:

They’re done. They were planning on finishing today.

Avatar Image says:

Hey guys, sorry I have not been on all day and have no idea what went on. I have four classes today and I went to go see a free screening of “The Kingdom,” which actually was pretty thought-provoking.

I have officially given up hope about winning. Tomorrow they are going to list the winners on the website and my name won’t be on it. Maybe somewhere along the line people will drop out and then maybe I will get a call, but I doubt it. Hopefully, I’ll just stop thinking about it and then WHAM I get a call and bliss will submerge me.

I am definitely going to be at Carnegie Hall that evening just to try to get a glance and I am keeping in contact with someone I met here who is going and is very willing to give me a full report and I am sure that Leaky will post the questions and answers as well. I will also post my e-mail and you guys can contact me and I can forward it to you and stuff.

It would have been really great if I was there and could have asked her my questions, but I can live vicariously for this because any new information about HP, is good information.

Congratulations to everyone on her who won and have a great time, which I know you will.

I’ll check in tomorrow and we can moan some more, but I have a sick amount of Anicent Greek hw to do.

And Lauren, Happy Almost Week Anniversary. LOL.

Avatar Image says:

Yep. It’s almost time for out pity party.

Avatar Image says:

I received a call on Wednesday afternoon by a nice lady named Vickie from Scholastic. It came up as “Out Of Area” on the caller ID, so don’t screen your calls! She said that they started on 9/14 and that it has been taking a long time to notify everyone. So there is still hope! We booked our flight and hotel tonight. Warning- for some reason, hotel room prices have shot way up in NYC, it was quite pricey. But my husband and I don’t care because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, I was looking at flight and hotel info, and almost had a heart attack. I have to come all the way from California. I wouldn’t do this for anyone else!

Lauren, I play flute, but played piccolo all through high school marching band and college wind ensemble. I actually got to perform at Carnegie Hall with my college wind ensemble ten years ago, which was amazing!

Avatar Image says:

This IS weird…next fall my band is going to NYC and we’re going to march in the Macy’s parade and play in Carnegie Hall. GASP. I WILL BE ON THE SAME STAGE AS JK ROWLING!!!!!! * Dies *

Avatar Image says:

That’s so cool that you get to march in the Thanksgiving parade!

Avatar Image says:

:( I guess seeing the trucks wasn’t a sign… boo! I’m depressed! :( When does the commiseration start?

Avatar Image says:

In reading some of the posts from last night I also wonder what will happen if people who confirmed don’t send back their notorized info. Will they contact additional people after 10/1? Will they just give out tickets the day of? Will they not fill the seats?

They should set up a waiting list for people who can definitely show up if given little notice…

Avatar Image says:

Well, they haven’t posted a list of the winners yet…

Avatar Image says:

Since winners had until today to confirm, my guess would be that the list will be posted next week.

Avatar Image says:

So… no luck for me either. But the website isn’t updated, so who knows? I’ve almost given up hope. By five tonight, then I will accept defeat. It’s our anniversary guys! Aren’t you happy? lol Congratulations everyone! I can’t wait to watch it to see it!

Avatar Image says:

I’ll join the pity party at 5:30… I’m going to bring fresh cookies! lol there’s still an hour and a half left…

Avatar Image says:

Wow, we’re the last on the news list. Now I really feel sad.

Avatar Image says:

I have given up hope as well. Of Course there is a tiny shard of hope…. but that’s a very tiny peice. Yay for our birthday. Being last on the list is a little sad, but thats okay, pathetic is usually my middle name.

Avatar Image says:

...and lets get this party started, then?

I really just want to call Scholastic and tell them that I don’t mind flying up to New York and waiting to see if there are any no-shows the day of the event. I really would.

Avatar Image says:

Yes, my lemon bars are fresh out of the oven. lol. The pity party begins!

Avatar Image says:

Less than ten minutes ‘til the party begins…how amazing would it be to get the call now?

Aaah, I am bummed. Well, that’s life. You win some and lose many. Congrats to everyone who has one…and to everyone else, the pity party is almost here!

Avatar Image says:

So… 3 and a half minutes… We should start a countdown. lolll Let’s NOT do that. Oh, this is so sad!

Avatar Image says:

Party begins…. :( :( :(

Avatar Image says:

Ugh, how depressing. Pass me a lemon bar, have a cupcake or ten. Hopefully someone spikes the pumpkin juice…

Avatar Image says:

I have decided to move to Toronto

Avatar Image says:

I LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, caps lock is off.

Avatar Image says:

Scholastic hasn’t been updated yet. Grrr. I want proof that I lost. Here’s a lemon bar, SuperAgentGirl.

Sigh. At least I cna spend the money that I would have spent on the trip to NYC on the new touch screen iPod…

Avatar Image says:

I need a big ice cream sundae!!!

Avatar Image says:

Oooooh, I might get one of those iPods for my birthday/Christmas. Have you heard good things about them? I want to make sure it’s a good investment before I go out there and get it. Also, do you know if it’s compatiable with Windows XP? I read somewhere it wasn’t…

Thanks for the lemon bar, Haydn! I’d like proof that I lost, too…it would be a comfort.

Avatar Image says:

HEY! I was one of the winners! YEAH! I CANT WAIT FOR THE 19TH! I just dont know what I should ask her? I still cant get over it! My dads coming home from his trip tonight. He doesn’t know yet because he was gone out of the country! I cant wait to tell him!

Avatar Image says:

Updating the site is the least they can do for us. At least put us out of our Misery. Any body want some Chocolate cake?

passes it around

Avatar Image says:

Yes, because being the optimists that we are, we still for some reason, have a small amount of hope. Oh well.

I WISH they would update the site!

And congratulations, cantellitssecret!

Avatar Image says:

Kathleen, I’d love some cake. What does everyone want to drink?

Avatar Image says:

Ooooh, congrats cantellitssecret! I am sure you’ll think of a GREAT question! There have been a few good ones posed on here (on some of the previous pages).

Thanks for the cake, Kathleen! Firewhiskey sounds appropriate, Lauren.

Avatar Image says:

AHH THERE WAS 2 MESSAGES ON MY MACHINE! I WAS SOOOO EXCITED!! but no. nothing of interest. I personally prefer a big milkshake to cheer me up… and i brought some cookies for everyone!!

Avatar Image says:

I am still not cheered up. Oh, by the way, a recommendation for those lucky winners. It might be interesting to get a UK special edition HP signed. You can order from amazon.co.uk and ship it to America. That was what I was going to do if I won.

Avatar Image says:

Bahh, I’ve lost. I’ve finally given up home. Congratulations to everyone who won, though. You are so lucky.

Avatar Image says:

So now we can officially go back to our lives and leave the comments alone.

Oh I wanted this so bad that I couldn’t stand it. :( And I have three friends that entered multiple people (like 20 or so between us) so I thought one of us HAD to win.

Oh well. The Journalism classes for my school are considering doing a one week trip to New York for a special thing that Columbia has in March, and usually when they go they see like 3 Broadway plays, which would be amazing. Nothing at ALL compared to meeting Jo, like even slightly, but at least it’s something…

Avatar Image says:

I pass a motion to move to toronto

Avatar Image says:

Not that I want to falsely encourage anyone-but they just finally got in touch with my mom today (I made her enter and promise to take me). They said they had been trying for a week and if they didn’t get her today they were moving to the next person on the list-so there may still be a few slots open! I was sooo excited when she called me this afternoon because I had totally given up—in fact when she said “we won” I at first had no idea what she was talking about since I figured it was all over!

Avatar Image says:

I have no idea why 3 lines of my post are strike-though—sorry

Avatar Image says:

Felicis, I hate you for getting my hopes up.

lol, I am just kidding, I love you!!! GO OPTIMISM!

Now, I can put off my depression until next week! YES!

And congratulations, that’s so cool!

Avatar Image says:

Hmm… Is puting off depression again and again really such a good thing? I mean it’s good to keep hopes up, but maybe it’s like an enchanted sleep, like Dumbledore says it’ll make it worse to accecpt it later then now..

LOL MY gosh! What a grim post i just reread it and i think i’m letting my disappointment affect my post!

Avatar Image says:

Yummm FireWhisky takes good. I hope that they don’t stop calling. Even if they called the day before it would be fine with me. I live like 1 hour away so….. yea.

Thanks Felicis for keeping my hope up….... LOL.

Avatar Image says:

Is there still hope? sweetness!

Avatar Image says:

I know there’s at least one slot open because my friend (who cant go) hasn’t called in and said she can’t go.

Avatar Image says:

Kristen, you just brought my hopes up infinitesamally. I probably spelled that wrong. Oh well. Oh, and by the way, those who thought winners were to be posted today, It says “after September 21, 2007”.

Avatar Image says:

Sorry I haven’t really been on today, I’m home for the weekend. So, are we still holding out hope? If so we can have another party next Friday. : ) But I don’t know if I want to hope to win still, I’m getting pretty depressed.

Avatar Image says:

Cheer up, you can either move to Toronto or go to a future book tour, hence unplanned. Did you know there is going to be a HP theme park?

Avatar Image says:

Well, I figure some of those papers they’re sending us to sign and have notarized will be release forms that allow them to put our names, ages, and hometowns or whatever on their website, so I’m not expecting to see the list of winners until after 1 October.

Avatar Image says:

S commented about bringing a UK edition of the book along, but i’ve been wondering about that. the UK books aren’t Scholastic products… and they are the folks throwing the party. i was thinking about this because i was thinking about taking an audio HP book (narrated by the great Jim Dale) to be autographed. but i thought they’d take it away from me at the door, or something, because it isn’t a Scholastic product. hmmm…

Avatar Image says:

They said “one book”. not “one Scholastic HP book” so i guess it would be okay. maybe I would bring a backup if I could go. Oh yeah! An entire set UK Sp. edition autographed costs about 20,000. Not that I would EVER sell an autographed JK book.

Avatar Image says:

Yes! My hope has returned.

Avatar Image says:

A U.K. special edition that I buy off the internet wouldn’t have one of those holographic stickers though, that prove it’s really Jo’s signature and not a forgery. Though I can’t imagine ever selling the thing, it’s a treasure beyond money as far as I’m concerned. Maybe if I found myself in really dire circumstances….

Avatar Image says:

I reread the scholastic sweepstake info and they stated the current book…so I take this to be book 7. I did not think about the UK version but since Scholastic is funding this event it will probably be the US version that they will let us bring and get signed. I have not recieved the packet yet and Didir stated that they will mail this out starting today or next week per Scholastic. My niece and I entered with the pact that we would take each other. I won but she has not yet. Either way, I am soo excited, hard to calm down. I will look forward to seeing everyone and hope others above still have a chance to win…remember not everyone can get it together so there is still a chance. Goodluck everyone..KMRN

Avatar Image says:

i called today and vicki said they are mailing out the packets to the winners today.

Avatar Image says:

On Q5 in FAQ they asked, “Q5. Will she sign any book in the series orf just Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?

Each person will receive a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but, if an audience member chooses to bring a favorite copy of any book in the series, Ms. Rowling will sign that instead.”

Avatar Image says:

I was reading the scholastic rules and it said “No cash substitutions, transfers or assignments of prizes allowed, except by Scholastic in case of unavailability, in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded.” Can you imagine if you would have won and could not go?

Avatar Image says:

S- The theme park is going to be AMAZING. They’re building it only a few hours away from me. Actually, my school usually goes up there when we’re seniors, so if that part of the park is open my three potter-nerd friends and I are going nowhere but there the whole day.

Avatar Image says:

Oh, and about winning and not being able to go- I would be in actual depression for a while. I just wouldn’t be able to deal with it.

Avatar Image says:

That would be awful.

Avatar Image says:

Well, I told my dad that I won! He was pretty amazed! But, I still dont think he understands how BIG this is! Oh! I’m so excited! Although I’m going to miss my dog! Unfortunately he cant come to New York with us! Well, it’s ok. I’m still not sure what to ask J.K. though! Any ideas?

Avatar Image says:

canttellitssecret, I had a list, at one time, but I’m not sure where it’s got to.

If you do get to ask one though, make it something of substance that will make us all smile, even if it’s just little details that we never got to find out :)

Avatar Image says:

Yeah. Thanks! At one point I had a list. I dont know where it went either. I didn’t bother looking for it before. I didn’t really expect I’d ever win! I’m really excited.

Avatar Image says:

It’s going to be amazing for everyone who won. I’m actually excited for you guys =P

Avatar Image says:

Thank you! I never in my wildest dreams imagined this would happen! I’m so happy. The last few days have just floated by. I’m just so excited. It really hasn’t even sunken in yet, you know?

Avatar Image says:

I won the jkr open book tour! I wanted to see if they posted my name yet on scholastic but, I cant find it! Anyone know where the list of winners are on scholastic.com? I just wanted to see my name you know?

Avatar Image says:

Congrats Canttellitsecret!

Avatar Image says:

Thanx!

Avatar Image says:

You mean like when we got our copies of Deathly Hallows at midnight and we just stood there screaming and hardley daring to open them, and then reading the “We Now Present the Seventh and Final Installment in the Epic Tale of Harry Potter” and then reading the poems and being scared out of our minds because they did NOT bode well for what was to come, and then finally getting to “All was well.” and closing the book and being in such a stupor because you weren’t quite sure what to do or how to feel so you kind of just sat there and when you finally got up it was really calmly, as if nothing had happened and you didn’t say anything to anyone about it for a little while because you just didn’t even know what to think yourself and you weren’t even sure if the past 24 hours had been a dream or not. That kind of hasn’t sunken in? :P

Avatar Image says:

I felt the same way when I finished! But, actually I was talking about the open book tour! I was saying that I couldn’t believe I had won!

Avatar Image says:

Ugh, I had to go digging through the news to find this page again!

Avatar Image says:

that happened to me too! I just added it to fav. so I could find it again easily!

Avatar Image says:

So did I, Lauren! I knew the Leaky Archives were there for a reason! LOL. When I saw the inside flap that said, “We now present the seventh and final installment in the epic tale of Harry Potter,” I started crying. I actually did, and it was ridiculous because I was trying to find a cab inn NYC that would carry my sister, my mom, my dad, and my cousin. There needs to be more of those van-cab things. I’m still not over that the last HP book came out, though.

Avatar Image says:

Does anyone have an extra ticket? lol

Avatar Image says:

anyone got an extra ticket? lol

Avatar Image says:

canttellitssecret, I knew you meant the open book tour, I was asking if it was that same sort of sureal like state =P
I felt so sick to my stomach when I read it Haydn, so I know how you feel. I didn’t quite cry, but I definitely got teary-eyed. But then again, nothing made me full out cry until Harry walking into the forest. Not even Remus and Tonks dying did it for me, and they were my absolute favorites without a doubt.

Avatar Image says:

I cried like non-stop after Dobby died. But when Fred died, I dropped my book and just sobbed. Now I’m reading the series to my little brother (he’s almost 8) and I know when I read DH to him I’m going to cry.

Avatar Image says:

Awww Lauren, I’m so sorry :(

It was so intense though, From the end of “The Battle of Hogwarts” to “The Prince’s Tale”. If it had been George and not Fred, I actually don’t think I would have been able to handle it. Like at all, actually. My favorites were Remus, Sirius, Tonks, George, and Snape. Only one of them made it out alive, and he nearly didn’t. Had it been George, it would have been my last 4 favorite one after the other after the other. I’m shaking just thinking about it.

Avatar Image says:

here’s what i’m wondering…today is sept 24th, and if they didn’t send out the info packets and affidavit things until friday or today…how the heck are we supposed to get them, fill them out, and get them back to NY by Oct 1st?

Avatar Image says:

I know I was wondering that too. Some of us are probably going to have to overnight them back and that’s $16. I was already going to send mine priority but I don’t think I’ll even get it in the mail until like Wednesday.

Avatar Image says:

I think Scholastic is cutting it a bit close. If someone doesn’t get it there on time, how the heck are they going to choose a runner up and have them get their stuff sent in on time? Not that I’m still hoping to win, I’m just speculating. Unless someone would like to take me. : )

Avatar Image says:

I lost!

Avatar Image says:

Got our paperwork today. Just got off the phone with Becky at Scholastic and she said they have to mail out page 3 because it was missing from all the packages, but faxing it back by 10/1/ is ok. JK will sign everyone’s books, but no pictures and there are 2000 people waiting…Questions have to be submitted in advance on-line. Costumes are ok, and they’re not sure when the doors open, but it’s all randomly assigned seating.

Avatar Image says:

ooohhh!! I cant wait!! it’s going to be awesome! NO PICTURES!! Ahhh MAN!! SSOOOOOOOO unfair!

Avatar Image says:

Karen, Can you tell me what the affadavit says that came with the packet? I am always nervous about signing my name to things so I am curious. Does ithave to be notarized? My packet hasn’t come yet. Probably tomorrow I guess. I spoke to Vicky today and she said you can fax the form and then send the original later to speed things up. Thanks for any info you can give me – I can’t wait to see mine.

Avatar Image says:

The mailboxes for my apartment complex are down. I don’t know if they got knocked over by a car or are being replaced or what, but they’re just lying on the ground. This is ridiculous. I live in NY so there’s a good chance my papers would’ve arrived today. I’m not entirely sure what to do. My mailman is sort of incompetent too, I’ve had lots of mail wind up in neighbor’s boxes. Arrrgh. I’m so nervous.

Does anyone know if guests have to sign stuff too? Cause mine lives an hour away and it’s gonna be real fun trying to get his signature within the week.

Avatar Image says:

I dont see anywhere in the paperwork that you have to but I didn’t look very closely! Goodluck!

Avatar Image says:

Help! I cant think of what I want to ask Jk! Anyone got any ideas or things that want asked?

Avatar Image says:

Yes, both guest and winner have to sign and it has to be notarized. It has the standard stuff that’s in the contest rules, and some legal stuff about absolving them of all actions, claims, etc. Sounds very official, but I think it’s just stuff they have to have. All you really need is the form filled out and a picture ID that matches the name/address on the form. They won’t be checking signatures, SS#, etc.

Avatar Image says:

What if the winner was a minor (my daughter won but is only 7), then do I sign for both of us since she doesn’t have a photo ID?

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, my guest is a minor too, would his guardians sign or what? And I also moved recently, so the winning address isn’t the same as the one on my ID. Do the forms say anything about that? Could I take a piece of official mail sent to me at the new address or something?

Avatar Image says:

does it say where/what address/website to submit the questions to? i guess that means no “pass the mic” at the event.

Avatar Image says:

My 8 year old daughter just signed, and my name and address are on it, so it’s my ID they’ll want. The hardest part is getting the kids to actually sign their names! Just call your Scholastic contact once you get your package (minus page 3) and ask about ID address, etc.

Avatar Image says:

I’m actually glad there’s no “pass the mic” at the event, because that could eat up a lot of precious time with stupid and/or rambling questions! I hope they give us the opportunity to submit questions beforehand, though.

Avatar Image says:

Karen, Did you bring your daughter with you to have it notarized or can I do it without her? Since my daughter won, I am thinking everything will be in her name so it’s kind of confusing being I’m the one who will have photo ID. Our address and last name are the same of course so I am not really expecting any problems. Is it absolutely no photos and are they checking for cameras?

Avatar Image says:

Sigh… I’m going to call them and see if they have my name as a backup, and what the chances are of getting in if i just show up and see if anyone forgets to pick up their tickets.. I’m still really depressed! Congrats to everyone that won though!! at least some of us got through! and questions to ask her (just little things that i’ve always wondered lol)- Why does Harry reconize Riddle’s name the first time he reads it? He thinks the name sounds familiar but he can’t place it, it’s in CoS. (233-234 american edit.) Who are the Ogdens? (Bob Ogden, Tiberious Ogden, Ogden’s Old Firewiskey) What were Harry’s parent’s profession? Who did Gregorvich take the Elder Wand from? Why did the wand work for Grindlwald when he just stole it, not directly taking it from it’s previous master?

Lol give any one any ideas?

Avatar Image says:

Has anyone figured out exactly where the guest is supposed to sign? The fist page seems to be for the winner, and the only other place to sign is for guardians of children…which isn’t necessary in my situation.

Avatar Image says:

Lol how i wish i was one of that happy nnumber filling out paperwork… Well I’ll just sit here and cheer you guys i guess!

Avatar Image says:

Well now I am stressing – I read the rules and it says winner AND guest have to sign an affidavit within 5 days 1. my mom (the actual official winner but only because I made her enter!) lives in North Carolina and I live in Ohio and 2. she doesn’t have the packet yet – her mail is sometimes a day or two behind, since they live in a tiny little place on the outer banks and 3. they don’t even go to the post office and check their mail every day!

Needless to say I called her this evening and told her she needs to call the Scholastic lady tomorrow and check on all that. If I have to pay her back she will overnight mail me whatever papers I have to sign or whatever. And she WILL be checking the mail every day.

Thanks to those who have question suggestions. I really only could think of one that I think won’t probably be answered in the encyclopedia. Since my mom isn’t a huge fan (she reads them but is going to let me have her signed book, for example) she probably won’t have any questions so I can perhaps submit a few in her place and I’ll try to put in a few that others are wondering about, too.

Avatar Image says:

hey “someone” can you let us know about the chances of getting tickets there if u decide to call.

Avatar Image says:

i just received my packet from scholastic. yes, something must be missing from the affidavit part. i called and left a message at scholastic (like everyone else, probably). OH…as i was typing this Vikki called. she is taking email addresses and sending the complete form out that way. so, if you wanted to speed things up a bit, if you get her voice mail, you could probably just leave your email address and she’d send it off to you.

Avatar Image says:

Everybody having trouble trying to fax back the affidavit? I’ve gotten nothing but a busy signal all day. Made a copy and will try faxing it tomorrow after 5, but will mail the original certified tomorrow morning. Plenty of time between the 1st and the 19th to make sure everything got there ok.

Avatar Image says:

If any of you didn’t win but really want your questions answered ask me! Chances are you might get it answered! I dont know what to ask so if you want I can maybe ask it.

Avatar Image says:

Anyone worried about giving out SS#’s like that with your full name and address? What do they need that for? Hopefully it gets filed and not put on some online document or something.

Avatar Image says:

I just got off the phone with Vickie, she sounds like she has had a rough day. But she already sent me a new copy of the document and I have printed it. I just need to sign it tonight and will fax it 1st thing in the morning. So if your document only has 3 pages, call your contact person!

Avatar Image says:

I have an idea for a question…what would Harry see in the Mirror of Erised, now, as of the epilogue?

Avatar Image says:

p.s. I want to go!!!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah maybe. Good idea… I wonder what harry would see in the mirror of erised as an adult. Do you think its changed at all?

Avatar Image says:

I wonder if Harry would see himself as he is, with a loving family and many friends around him. Or weather he would see all his beloved dead around him with his living family too. And i called scholastic before.. no response…

Avatar Image says:

dont think so…

Avatar Image says:

I have no phone number to call Scholastic, and I know I won’t get my complete packet in time, as I live in CA and just got the first part of the packet yesterday. Where is everyone getting this magic phone number??

Avatar Image says:

They give you the phone number when they call you to tell you you’re a winner, along with their name as a contact. There’s also a number/e-mail link on the sweepstake info page at Scholastic.

They said as long as they get their hard copy back sometime next week you should be all set. Still can’t get a fax through. I get the impression they think we’re all freaking out too much over the whole thing.

Avatar Image says:

ooohhh…i cant wait! I haven’t sent out the copy yet! OH NO! I’ll get it out tommorow! I’m nervous!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, I’ve just spent the last hour and a half working out the logistics of how I’m going to get the form signed and notarized and have my guest and his guardian sign it and get it notarized too, and collect all the pages in one place (he and I don’t live near enough to meet in the next few days), both as faxes and hard copies, and get them sent out to Scholastic by the deadline. I swear, if it wasn’t a meeting with Jo on the line, I’d say to heck with it.

I wonder if any winners will say that. It says quite clearly on the affidavit that, “Failure to return the signed and notarized affidavit by October 1st may result in your forfeiture of the prize and an alternate winner being selected.”

Avatar Image says:

I know what you mean about the hassle of getting all this paperwork accomplished. I really don’t think the folks at Scholastic intended it to be this difficult when they started. They’ve done book readings with authors before, I am sure, but probably nothing on this scale. I can’t imagine all the steps they’ve had to go through for this event, not to mention the three school events they are trying to get organized at the same time. I’m sure they are pulling their hair out.

The timing on the paperwork is not ideal. I think they intended to get it out a lot earlier (and to get it out with all four pages!). I asked Vicky if she was ready to wring peoples’ necks, and she said that she is now beyond that and is in a new zen zone. I hope so for her sake!

And, near as I can figure it, these events aren’t money makers for Scholastic. It’s good PR, but it sure is a lot of work for them in the tradeoff!

Avatar Image says:

I was in the car on my cell phone when they originally called, and of course, I couldn’t find a pen anywhere. It was like a bad dream. The lady said it was okay, as long as I was saying yes, they would just mail out the forms. I should have foreseen problems like this, though…

Avatar Image says:

Finally got in contact with Becky. She was very nice, and sent me the complete form. She said don’t worry about the deadline, just send it as soon as possible.

Avatar Image says:

Ha, I didn’t think that people would still be posting! Awesome! Anyway, my question would be what were James’s and Lily’s jobs.

Avatar Image says:

Sorry I posted that twice!

Avatar Image says:

I still check on here too…I guess it’s just a habit now.

Avatar Image says:

Luckily I managed to get everything taken care of and faxed and mailed today. I tried to get my paper notarized yesterday and the notary wouldn’t do it because the notary part was on the same page as the minor information. even though i’m not a minor, he wouldn’t do it. i spent a good 10 minutes arguing with him but he couldn’t get it. so i had to go somewhere else and, gee, whadya know, this guy saw i wasnt a minor and i had no problem. so everything’s mailed off. now i just can’t wait till then!

Avatar Image says:

My notary thought that was strange, too. She thought that page was just to have the minor’s guardian’s signature notarized. She just affixed a whole separate page that notarized my signature and my Mom’s, so I assume that’s fine. They should care about the legality, not the location of the signature, so I hope it’s okay. My notary was really nice! When I told her what it was for, she was really excited for me, and she waived the $10 fee for her service! This was at my Credit Union, though, so they should be nice to me.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah. I just got mine notarized and mailed today! It should get there on Monday but thats cutting it close! I just hope all goes well! X your fingers for me! I’m so excited. All my friends are in awe! They like hp too, but who wouldn’t? So, anyway…

Avatar Image says:

This is for Ann on page 15…the SS# is because the seats at Carnegie Hall have a taxable gift value and if needed or asked by our government, Scholastic will provide a value for the ticket/seat gift and you get to pay the taxes on it.

Avatar Image says:

For all those above in the multi state situation and the notary issue..I spoke with Vicki about this. I am taking my 11 year old niece who live in another state, I just signed the winner’s page and the guest section, then faxed them over to my brother who then signed as the parent and got it notarized and he faxed it all to Scholastic. Vicki got them and stated that it was good. Hope this helps.

Avatar Image says:

I finally got my papers faxed through last night! sighs in releif Ooh…I’m so excited. The only downside is my school fair is on the 19th so I’ll miss it! But, who cares JKR is ssssoooo much more important. Well, thats it. Good luck to you all in getting your papers in on time!

Avatar Image says:

Hello all. I just checked my voice mail and found out that I was a winner. I was told to call by sept. 21 if possible and today is sept. 29. Now I am freaking out that I will be able to go after seeing that you have to get paper work signed and returned. Should I be scared or hopeful?! I called Vicki and left a message and I am definitely going to call tomorrow again.

Avatar Image says:

depmuggle- how did you end up not checking your voice mail for so long?

Avatar Image says:

First thing is that if I don’t know the number I usually don’t answer it, which I know is kind of stupid. Plus a bill collector has been calling so I figured that is who it was. My wife told me a few seconds after I checked my voice mail and told me I have to check my voice mail more often. The number came up as 212-343-0000. I googeld it and saw nothing. So tonight i figured let my go on Scholastic.com and then I saw a 212-343 number on their web-site and freaked out. So now I have learned my lesson, but I am very HOPEFUL.

Avatar Image says:

GOOD LUCK!

Avatar Image says:

Anybody still having any problems with the FAX number? I tried all week (M-F) at different times and all I get is a busy signal. They should get the hard copy before I ever get the FAX thru.

Anybody coming in costume? My 8 year old daughter wants to wear hers.

Avatar Image says:

depmuggle, I hope you get to go, but they did call runner-ups last week b/c they didn’t hear back from people. You should call Scholastic.

Avatar Image says:

I didn’t have any trouble with the fax number. It went through fine the first time. But I am west coast, and sent the fax after Scholastic would probably be closed, so that might have helped.

Avatar Image says:

I tried during the day and it was buisy. So I tried at 8 O’clock that night and it went through no problem.

Avatar Image says:

Hey Lauren, thank you! I hope I get to go to. I called Vicki Sat night and Sunday night and left messages. I hope to hear from her on Monday. Actually I will call in the morning. I am still going to keep my head up! My dream is slowly slipping through my fingers. But she said to try and call by the 21st of sept. Wish me luck my MUGGLE friends. I am going to call every 15 minutes if I have to. I don’t even care if I get in trouble at work. I am going to make this happen!!

Avatar Image says:

dep- Yeah, they’re closed over the weekend, so don’t freak out that no one answered. And now my paper on Plato calls to me….* sigh *

Avatar Image says:

Yikes, depmuggle, I think I’m going to have nightmares about that very scenario now. Good luck, I hope they realize how cruel it would be not to let you go….

I faxed my papers yesterday evening and they went through fine, first time. But then again, Saturday night probably wasn’t the most popular time for sending faxes anyway. Now I have to mail the originals out tomorrow, and I’m torn between putting a stamp on it and dropping it in the mail first thing in the morning, or trying to slip away from work for half an hour and visit the post office to overnight it with delivery confirmation and insurance and all that good stuff.

Avatar Image says:

I was one of the lucky winners. I am asking the English 4 students at my high school who are studying HP and the Sorcerer’s Stone to suggest questions. If I find an outstanding question, I will submit it as my question.

Avatar Image says:

I won!!!! I am so excited! I think i was chosen as an alternate because I was called on September 26(two weeks after) So don’t give up hope maybe someone won’t be able to go and they will call you late like me.

Avatar Image says:

Congrats to you and all other winners! I also won! I was called right away so I can’t imagine how great it must feel to be called after hope started to leak away. Only 18 more days…I keep telling myself that. I just can’t wait. What are you gonna wear? First I was going to wear costume but, then I decided I wanted to look really nice when I finally meet J.K. Rowling. So long.

Avatar Image says:

Please, does anyone have a question they want answered by Jo? If you do tell me and it may or amy not be answered. I don’t have a question yet. Although I do have a few good ideas. But, none of them are “right”. So- any ideas?

Avatar Image says:

I really wish they had told us some idea of what to wear. I don’t think I’ll wear a costume though, I also want to look nice when I finally meet her. I waas thinking dressy- casual. because that is how J.K.Rowling always dresses for her book signings. Unfortunatly, I’ll be in sneakers because I’m getting ankle surgery done this week so I’ll be on crutches. I finally get to meet my favorite writer and i’ll be on crutches!

Avatar Image says:

What would Harry see in the mirror of erised now? how many students are at hogwarts? does harry go back to live at grimmauld place? did james play chaser or seeker? who were among the “fifty others” who died in the final battle?

Avatar Image says:

Great ideas!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah! I did it!! I am going to see JK!!! I called and got in touch with Vicki at 9:30 this morning and she asked me if I was able to attend and guess what I said? Duh, of course I said yes. She sent me the paperwork via e-mail and I had everything done signed, notarized and faxed by 12:30 pm. I still have to mail it though. CONGRATS to all!! Keep the faith. Peace to all!!

Avatar Image says:

Congrats! I got in too!! I can’t wait! Only 17 more days!

Congratulations everyone! I entered my 8 year old but didn’t tell him about it. We received a voice message on Wed 9/26 from Vicki. What a happy surprise! We called back and she asked if we accept. YES! Our paperworked was faxed back and we mailed the hard copy. I followed up with Vicki by phone and it looks like we’re all set. Yay! My son plans to be in costume. I plan to go as the Muggle Mom ;)

Hey, I have a question…you know how Jo mentioned that the Potters had a cat? I know it might sound dumb to wonder if it’s Crookshanks, but it does kind of make sense. Sirius said he convinced the cat to trust him, and he told the cat to get Scabbers, but if Crookshanks was the Potters cat, he would know Scabbers was Peter, and he would know Sirius too. Jo even said Crookshanks was part Kneazle, so he’s smart. And Lily’s letter said Harry nearly killed the cat…maybe that’s why Crookshanks’ face is squished. : ) I just thought that was funny and kind of interesting…even though I think Jo would have told us if Crookshanks was the Potters cat.

OMG!! I’m not on the list! I’ve already RSVPed sent in my stuff and faxed it! WHY? It’s ok! They probably just haven’t finished. Ok…calm down. deep breathes.

Avatar Image says:

Hey, we’re not on it either! We got called on the 15th, so maybe we were already on a back-up list. They should have our stuff by now too. I’m sure they think this is helping reassure people, but it’s going to panic a whole lot of others. Interesting to see which states large numbers of winners came from.

Avatar Image says:

Don’t worry everyone. The list will be updated. That is what it says on the website….My name is not there either, but I just did everything yesterday.

Avatar Image says:

I faxed my papers on Saturday and overnighted the hard copies yesterday (it got there before 8 AM this morning, according to the USPS website). I wasn’t expecting to see my name up there yet, but it is. I guess that means I’m all set and I don’t need to bother Vicki on the phone. I can’t quite bring myself to breath a sigh of relief though, for some reason….

Lauren, there are about a thousand students at Hogwarts and James played Chaser.

Avatar Image says:

Well I know Jo said he played chaser around the time GoF came out, but she also said Dumbledore was 150 years old, which we know now know he wasn’t. And she had him playing with the snitch. Who else would have the snitch? And if you actually add up the students in Harry’s year, you get less than 300 students at Hogwarts. We know of 8 Gryffindors, so assuming there’s 8 kids in each year in each house, that’s 224 students. If we round it up to 10 students per year per house, that only makes 280. If there were 1000 students, there’d have to be 35 or 36 kids in each year in each house. I don’t know. Sometimes she hints there’s about 1000, but that just doesn’t work. And the sorting would take forever. If there are really about 1000 kids, there would be about 140 new kids each year. Which means if every kid got only 1 minute with the sorting hat, the sorting would take over 2 hours. And we know sometimes the hat takes a while to decide. I don’t know. Maybe I should just let it go. : )

Man!...I might call Vicki tommorow. My name is STILL not up on the list even though I sent in my stuff a while ago. I hope everything is ok. I’m so nervous about everything. “What if it didn’t get in. What if we if we hit 5 hour traffic and miss the event. What if for some reason we can’t get in. Or we loose our tickets.” I’m going crazy!

Avatar Image says:

Sorry to double post but my name just was added to the list. * sighs in relief * If your waiting for your name to be updated you might wan to check again now that it’s been updated.

Avatar Image says:

Mine too, so it will happen.

Avatar Image says:

I’m getting so anxious!! I can’t wait!! All my friends are still in shock.

Avatar Image says:

Lauren, my daughter and I were just talking about numbers of students at Hogwarts. We figured 5 boys in Harry’s dorm his year, so we figured 5 girls too, equaling 10 students per year (10×7=70), times 4 houses, for a total of 280. Seems small, so let me know if anyone else figures it another way. In the movies it seemed like 20 kids per class when they had their Potions, Herbology, etc. classes. And maybe there were 70 kids sitting at each house table in the Great Hall.

Avatar Image says:

Yeah! And if there are 5 girls in Harry’s year, how come we only see Hermione, Lavender, and Parvati? There would be 2 other girls who are never mentioned. Although, there is some evidence they exist. But why would we never have seen them?

Avatar Image says:

Well, what about angelina? And Katie Bell?

Avatar Image says:

They’re older. What about Parvati’s twin?

Avatar Image says:

Parvati’s twin is in ravenclaw. Remember?

Avatar Image says:

JKR has said that she is not good with numbers, and she admitted she probably messed up when she once said, off the top of her head, that there were around 600 students at Hogwarts. I did read once that she made up 40 students in Harry’s year, so she would have characters ready as she needed them, but that they were not necessarily the ONLY students in Harry’s year. If there are at least 40 students per year, that would be closer to 300 students total. It does seem strange that there would only be 8 Gryffindors in Harry’s year, but she never said the division was equal, either. Maybe more students are put in Hufflepuff than the other houses.

Avatar Image says:

Hmmm…I always pictured that Hogwarts had a lot of students. But, I never did the math. I can’t wait to meet J.K.

Avatar Image says:

I just booked my hotel! I am so excited!

Avatar Image says:

Melissa Anelli asked about the two missing Gryffindor girls during the LeakyMug interview. (MA: Have you discovered the two missing Gryffindor students? JKR: [Covers eyes] Ohh! [Frustrated.] I was going to go and get that for you, I’m sorry I haven’t got it, I’ll put it on my site.) And I can’t find the quote, but I’m fairly sure she said James was a Chaser even though he was playing with the Snitch in SWM, because Snitches are much better than Quaffles for impressing girls with. Or something to that effect.

Hm, I still haven’t thought of a good question to submit on the Scholastic website for Jo. How about, “Why was Lily’s letter in Sirius’s bedroom at Grimmauld Place, when he would have run away years before she sent it?”

Avatar Image says:

Hmmm…god idea. I’m so anxious for the 19th!

Avatar Image says:

I’m excited for tommorow. My homeroom class is going to an over night camp. It’s going to be awesome. There is a 40ft high zip line. Also a giant mud pit with a rope. The object is to swing across the giant pit of mud known as the “peanutbutter pit”. We stay in cabins. That night theres a dance in the mess hall. Very exciting. All my friends and I were able to reserve the same cabin! Yeah.

P.S. I can’t wait for the 19th! Fellow Open Book Tour Winners, join me in saying, HAZZAH!!

Avatar Image says:

That’s cool. I’m so jealous of you guys. I’m still pretty depressed I didn’t win.

Avatar Image says:

Well, I’m back from camp. It was so AWESOME! The 40ft zip line turned out to be 55ft!! So cool!! I’m glad to be back. Now I can concentrate on meeting J.K THIS WEEK!!! OMG!!6 more days! Wow I’m going nuts!
