I dont have one problem with the books from a religios standpoint. they are WORKS OF FICTION, which is the total point. but i just thought it was very unnecessary for her to reveal that about dumbledore. I mean, weren’t we better off not knowing? the ppl who wanted him to be gay could see their clues and think he was gay the whole time, and the rest of us could enjoy the idea of him being a typical old man (attracted to woman) and look at him in a grandfather like light.

You know, I think we’ve all just overlooked the fact that Jo has also just revealed that Neville is straight. I mean, we never really knew before now, did we? Sure, he went to the dance with Ginny, but we all know how poorly that turned out.
Why aren’t we discussing this EXTREMELY IMPORTANT relevation?

Shausto,
I wasn’t aware that there was a point to prove. We’re talking here about the fabric of a human being’s personality, an sexuality is a large part of it. Why would you assume there are no lesbians. Afterall there are many in this world, and have been many, some of them great figures. It’s not wise to be so foolish.

I was wondering why with all extensive story of DD live in DH we never heard of a women in his live… It makes perfect sense – explains his relationship with Grindelwald, and why DD didn’t challenge GW ealier, and also why GW with Elder wand was still defeated

haha sorry, jo, I do realize that others have different beliefs. I should clarify. Those who hate others for being different because of who they are are just down-right stupid (especially those who say they are accepting then go gay-bashing).

Holy! ...Wow! Now that one I did NOT expect, ever! O.O
But I do love hearing that Neville married Hannah Abbott, it sounds about the right thing to happen to our beloved guy. :D

This is fantastic news! You go, Jo! As a gay person myself, I was never particularly fussed that she had ommitted gay characters, as it wasn’t germaine to the story line. And this back-story really changes nothing, except my respect for Jo has now gone over the moon!
For those writing here that they think this is a publicity stunt – I sincerely doubt that HP and Jo Rowling need any additional notoriety or book sales. I think she was just confirming what many fans suspected at least since HBP (anyone else remember “nice suit, professor”?)
And finally: shame on those here who feel that revealing Dumbledore’s sexuality degrades him in any way. Some of the finest lights of humanity have been Gay: Michaelangelo, Gertrude Stein, Oscar Wilde, to name just a few. The late great Albus Dumbledore is now added to that pantheon of greatness.
I love you Jo!

to whoever posted the “clues”...those are lame. as for the outfit that dumbledore wore in the sixth book when they go back in his memories-that was the kind of stuff that people wore back then. Have you seen other things that are from that time period? Trust me, that fits right in. And as for the high heeled shoes…Dumbledore’s an old guy from like the 1800s, that was the kind of thing men wore then when they dressed smartly, which it is obvious that Dumbledore was when we first met him in the very first chapter of the very first book (Merlin that seems so far away…)
I always thought of Dumbledore as like a grandfather, so hearing that he’s gay is wierd. NOT because being gay is wierd, but rather because it just doesn’t fit with my image of Dumbledore. I mean have any of YOU thought that YOUR grandfather was gay? I willing to bet that that’s a NO! Grindelwald and Dumbledore always just sounded like friends, like Ron and Harry. It would be far more believeable if Seamus were gay with someone other than Dean Thomas, for obvious reasons (i.e. his crush on Parvati, Ginny, and Luna). The fact that Seamus’ love life is left out speaks to me more of his being gay but it not fitting in the storyline as he is a minor character than Dumbledore, a major character, being gay.

You have got to be kidding me. I can’t even imagine why she tells us this now. After reading 7 books and already having formed opinions of all the characters why come out with something so big NOW? What is the point? I have to agree with the ‘tabloid’ comment.

I think this actually is the BEST way to incorporate homosexuality into such an iconic peice of writing.
As a homosexual who has nothing to do with any of the flamboyant stereotypes that float around with the word “Gay”, the fact that a character like Dumbledor can represent the Gay community is really nice. Its a reminder that just because someone isn’t “In your face” flamingly flamboyant, doesn’t mean they aren’t gay.
Sexuality is not blatant 100% of the time. I say spot on to Rowling. Anyone else who thinks it should have been blatant to be cannon, needs to actually meet some REAL gay people, not the Fab 5 trendies.

sorry guys i think im starting to say some stupid things here. im just gonna go to bed now before i say some more stupid stuff. again sorry

Why all these negative comments about Dumbledore being gay? I don’t see it as a huge deal. It’s a good thing, and it adds to Dumbledore, but why on earth are some people so outraged about it?

Jo never intended this to be turned into a huge debate over whether being gay is right or wrong. Please stop arguing! I happen to think that Jo might have revealed a bit too much this time because she should have realized how much buzz this would cause….I mean, think of the media! It’s going to be be blown way out of proportion. I happen to think that the news of Dumbledore’s sexuality is hilarious and fitting, but I know other people do not see it this way. We can’t convince each other of what is moral/immoral because we all have different beliefs. It makes me sad to read these posts because all of us Potter fans are turning against each other :-(.

dances aroundOMG! Greater Good is canon! Ha! I knew it! (Well, maybe not knew it, but hoped it)I’ve been writing fics for Albus/Gellert for months now and they are canon!!! PArty!!!
@James supporting Remus: Awwwwwwwwww.
