Oh please! you all are pathetic. Go cry to your mothers that DD is gay so you can get over it and get a life. The books are great (and a shelter from real life) but they are a story nonetheless, there is a real world out there, stop reacting so bad for being kicked out of your golden cages.

Yawn, just woke up. hmm, it wasnt a dream after all! (or nightmare to some others, ha ha) Dumbledore is gay. Plain and simple. He loved Grindelwald. This to me adds gravitas to the story as I can now see why Dumbledore let his moralistic faults surface agrressively, becasue of his blind adoration and love for Grindelwald.
Starting to read the series from beginning with all of these new insights in Snape, Dumbledore, Lupin, Harry’s parents, even Dudley and Draco!

damn, this is such alotta ugly from a parade of stupidity!
ZOMGWTFHESGAYWRYYYYYYYY?
you prejudiced ignorant fools call yerselves potterfans? these books had a very important meesage of acceptance of others and respect.
but no, you let your ignorant, small minded views blind you stupidly.
why am i so angry about this? because gay people DID NOT choose to be gay. they CAN NOT change what their sexuality is. you prejudiced people expect gays to change who they are internally just so it would be more convient for you? pfft, in fact it’s YOU who should change to accept what others are. all these disgustingly ignorant posts make me sick.
ignorance causes the most harm.

I am absolutely amused by this whole thing. I don’t blame her for not getting into it in the books – for one: Harry’s a bit obtuse at times and the story is from his POV, and two: they’re children’s books, she couldn’t put it in the book because that would probably cause all sorts of problems. This way, those who are unimpressed can live in denial and those who like it can accept it as canon.

people keep saying,” why did she do this, it was so unnecessary” But It’s not like she said it out of nowhere! somebody asked her if Albus ever found true love, and she said yes, he did, and it just so happend to be with a dude. Sheesh, so many homophobes out there. loosen up. she’s not screaming it in anyones face.

Why is it that whom we choose to love is so much more threatening to some than who we choose to hate? Why would anyone be ‘concerned’ about anyone’s love interest in so far as gender is concerned? Human beings come in a full spectrum and the only things we should be concerned about should revolve around learning to live with each other on this blue gem of a planet.

AND it would be so sweet if in the movie we could see a scene where albus just looks at a picture of his one true love, just so we know it’s there, and to see the love.

This statement is to Lee who stated that “You might as well say he’s a child molester” and to the other people in the world who are of the same or similiar opinion:
There is a special place in hell for people who equate homosexuality in any way with pedophilia and/or child molestation.
And just for your info Lee, I’m an Eagle Scout and I’m gay. Being gay is only an issue if everyone makes an issue out of it. My troop leaders were of the opinion that I was an asset to our troop and that there was no reason to harass me about my sexual orientation, as it had no impact on my time or what I did in the BSA.

Dumbledore falling for Grindelwald makes so much sense, I can’t believe I never suspected it! It must have been so hard for him when he knew he had to do something about what Grindelwald was doing and the moment he finally faced him, god, that must have torn him up!

I really don’t like the fact that Dumbledore is gay because I see no reasons for it and furthermore I see no reasons for “revealing” new facts now if J.K.R. is so determined not to write another sequel ever again.

I’ve read most of the comments and I have to admit that some people make me really sad. Sometimes it surprises me how much of prejudice is still floating around in the 21st century. I, personally, am very happy that Jo said what she said. Not only that one of the characters was revealed as being gay, but more importantly – it was a strong, complex character loved and admired by many, not just in the wizarding world, but by the readership, too. If she said that, e.g. Draco Malfoy or any random DE was gay, it would only add more fuel to the whole debate that homosexuality = evil.
If I ever have children, I will make sure to read the books to them and share that piece of information about DD with them, showing them that romantic love has more faces. Please, people, try to be reasonable. Do you honestly believe that a person just decides to be gay? That it’s just some kind of a whim? That he or she just sits down one day and says to him/herself: “Wow, wouldn’t it be great to be attracted to people of the same sex, so I can deal with everyday prejudice and be hated and disrespected by many?”
I’d like to express my support for all the gay people here, trying to defend themselves and explain that they are no different from any other person. Hopefully one day the society will realize that the love you feel is as strong and sincere as the one of heterosexuals. Until then, continue being strong and don’t let the haters get you down. Cheers.

I’m offended that there’s such a ruckus about this. Jo decided that Dumbledore was gay when she was planning and writing the books and she told fans because it was relevant to a question. It’s interesting to know because it makes us understand his actions a little better, but it’s not terribly relevant to the plot, so she left it out of the books. That’s just the way things are and, although Harry Potter fans have a propensity to ignore certain aspects of canon (fanfiction pairings, anyone?), anyone who doesn’t like it will have to learn to accept it. It’s not a big deal; it’s just the way things are.
Now, my opinion on some of what has been said: being gay does not equate to being a pedophile OR a child molester. I am a gay man who is generally attracted to older men. If this shatters your narrow, narrow perception of what homosexuality is, DEAL WITH IT (oh, and while you’re at it, let’s also throw in the fact that not all gay males are effeminate dandies. Take me, again, for example…). Homosexuality, contrary to some people’s beliefs, is not a choice. Neither is heterosexuality, asexuality or the specific PEOPLE that any given person is attracted to (regardless of gender). Think back on your own experiences. Have you ever made a conscious choice to be attracted to anyone? Have you ever sat down and debated with yourself for a few hours and come to a rational decision to be attracted to someone? If so, did that relationship feel HOLLOW in any way? Yeah, that’s what I thought.
As for my opinion on why Jo said it then instead of including it in the books, it was simply the time and place to say so. She didn’t make a big deal of it (neither should we) because it wasn’t a big deal. It didn’t have a place in the books because it would have been off-topic. Everyone who’s saying that this is just a ploy to seem more PC (yeah, you!) should think about what you’d’ve thought if it were included in the books. That WOULD have been out of left field, and most likely actually would have been an attempt at being either politically correct or contrary (odd how it would work as both, no?). When asked the question she responded. That’s all. No fuss, no need for one.
Essentially, my point is this: Jo (the author of the series we presumedly—I mean, would we be on this site otherwise?—enjoy) said it. Deal.

Blimey is this still going on? Yawn... get over it already.
All i have to say is that if this is enough to make you stop reading the books or make you feel “betrayed” or whatever, then you didn’t deserve to be a HP fan in the first place. One of the major messages of the books was tolerance and acceptance, a great pity some never seemed to grasp that.
The same goes for people saying hurtful things about JKR, she is a wonderful lady and does not deserve to have such spiteful things said about her.

This betrays every Harry Potter fan(oh, yes, people in NYC might applaude, but it’s like finding out your priest, or scout master is gay. You don’t want people like that in positions of influence. Look at the big stink raised by the press when that one senetor was accused of being gay. You might as well say he’s a child molester. As a writer I don’t think it proper to reveal a major charactor’s sexual orientation. It’s just shabby.
