Awesome, Melissa. Make us proud!!

Avatar Image says:

“What do I do?” ;) Nice job, Melissa! It was really sudden- I clicked on Leaky and then I heard your name on the TV.

Avatar Image says:

How exciting! I can’t wait to watch.

Avatar Image says:

It was too sudden for me to get to tape it, so will the same footage be on again at 4:40 or is it another appearance?

Avatar Image says:

dang it, i’m in class then i’ve got work! i can’t wait to see her online. YAY Melissa!

Avatar Image says:

Ah I just saw the commercial for it and freaked out! Tonight at 8:00 yes!

The man reporting was like “Now that Dumbledore is a gay wizard..”

Um..heh.

Avatar Image says:

What’s tonight at 8?

Avatar Image says:

It’s Dumbledore, he’s an incredible wizard, champion of Muggles, Harry’s mentor and a beautifully written human character! Now, it’s “Dumbledore is a GAY wizard”, like nothing else is pertinent…, silly gits!

Avatar Image says:

Nice job! You spoke quite eloquently on the matter. Now if only that reporter can pronounce your name correctly! XD

Avatar Image says:

Are they showing it again at 8PM???

Avatar Image says:

I’m taping it and I’ll send it in as soon as I can!

Avatar Image says:

As a Harry Potter fan I am aghast to hear of the portrayal of Dumbeldore as a homosexual. This only shows to what lengths some people can go to sell some extra books. J.K. Rowling should be ashamed.

Avatar Image says:

oh no, not here too….There are other links talking about this..please go there.

Here we should celebrate Melissa

Avatar Image says:

Folks, this is a work of FICTION, Dumbledore is not a REAL PERSON and JKR was just answering a fan’s QUESTION. I was there and she was reluctant when she mentioned this information so it is not a ploy to make more money. It is HER STORY and HER CHARACTERS!!! Get a life folks. kmrn

Avatar Image says:

AKG, too bad she’ll never be ashamed right? :)

Go Melissa!

Avatar Image says:

I went on MSNBC literally at 4:41. Did I miss her?

Avatar Image says:

Couldn’t catch the 3:40, have been watching since 4:30. Do they show the same episode of MSNBC live at 8:00 or something? I really want to see this!!!

Avatar Image says:

No, she hasn’t been on yet. She was on early @ 3:35ish, but she’s been pushed by the Breaking Fire News, methinks.

Avatar Image says:

She’s been preempted by news about the wildfires here. I hope we get it up on YouTube soon!

Avatar Image says:

Oh nevermind, the show at 8:00 is Countdown with Keith Ovarymann. something like that.

Avatar Image says:

So I’ll tape it if I can- but tonight @ 8, Keith Olbermann is doing a special on Dumbledore’s coming out. I’ll get that for you guys too if I can!

Avatar Image says:

Grr! I have to wait until 8 I guess. Lousy fires…ruining lives there and on the other side of the country…AKG, talk somewhere else, not on these comments…if you’re so against it why are you still here?

Avatar Image says:

It would be great if captured it, I’d like to see her reaction.

Avatar Image says:

I don’t think they’re running Mel at 8:00 are they? It’s just that other show.

Avatar Image says:

Curse those wildfires, not only are they ruining lives, they are ruining our afternoon of seeing her interviewed!

Has the interview scheduled for 4:40 been delayed until later? Let’s hope so.

Avatar Image says:

I guess she was knocked off. I hope someone else got it!!!

Avatar Image says:

I just saw this, so it’s probably too late, and I won’t be home at 8, if it’s going to be on then. I hope someone puts it on the web, please?

Is it too late or this new information and the accompanying fan reactions to go into Melissa’s book? I hope not.

Avatar Image says:

You guys, Countdown is on at 8. Even though Keith is talking about Dumbledore, it doesn’t mean Melissa will be on the show.

I’m bummed I missed it.

Avatar Image says:

yeah I tapped the 4:40 segment, to unfortunately find wild fire coverage, but there will be a segment about Dumbledore on at 8/7c on MSNBC

Avatar Image says:

oh shiznig, i missed it! oh well, someone get a video soon. pretty please.

Avatar Image says:

It seems to me that “some” people are a bit overreacting about Dumbledore being gay.Next they start again with wanting to burn the Harry Potter books! I thought the Middle-Ages were gone? I am very happy that our “Melissa” is being interviewed on TV. I hope she will let those media people know – what we – the “real Harry Potter fans think about Jo’s revelation. I agree that it is a free world (is it?) and everyone can have their own opinion…but it seems to me that tolerance is still a “foreign-word” to a lot of hypocrite’s! After all, this is Jo’s story – we wanted more insider-news about the character’s…fine.. we can live with whatever she tells us – or – forget how happy this wonderful woman has made us for the last couple of ten years – with this awesome world she created for us!

Avatar Image says:

GAH! I wanted to watch! I waited for the second broadcast but nothing! All they are gonna do is run the CA stuff over and over for the next three hours while other news is put on hold. American news is so frustrating.

Avatar Image says:

someone tape the olbermann thing at 8.

Avatar Image says:

Good for you, Melissa!

But honestly, i find all this hubabub a little absurd. Aren’t we at war?

Avatar Image says:

Man, my school’s even cancelled (yes, wildfires!) but I don’t have TV so I can’t watch it! (So I hope someone gets it online…)

Anyway, go Melissa!

Oh, and seconded on whoever said hopefully parts of this go in the book. The hp books were never gay canonically, but the fanbase and fandom certainly are, so this is important!

Avatar Image says:

I’m taping Keith Olbermann at 8:00!! I’m not surprised he’s covering the story. After all, he was there at Carnegie Hall. He talked a little before J.K. came on stage. Maybe he’ll say what he thought about what she said. Honestly, I’m glad she told us. I mean when people ask her questions they want to know the TRUTH. Now we know when we ask a question she’ll answer it totally truthfully. And to tell you the truth, I’d be a little sad if she just said no. We now know that J.K. is not going to lie about what she thinks. And you know she was just daying that she always thought of hime being gay. Nothing is wrong with that. I’m straight but I don’t mind. And anyone who call themselves a potter fan should not turn on J.K. so fast. I was there and I think what she said was FINE!!

Avatar Image says:

Dumbledore a gay wizard! what a fuzzz. when you really want to read about a gay wizard and not about a neutered old geezer read the Herald-Mage serie by Mercedes Lackey.

Avatar Image says:

Kamion,WHAT?

Avatar Image says:

I just finally logged on and am sad i missed it. cant wait for the recap and upload of it.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with having gay characters. I have a charecter that in the past few months has really become clear that he has homosexual leanings that grew from his history and from the plot. will it feature in the book when I get to that one? not likely, but to me it makes sense for me.

The problem comes not from there being a gay character, but from the intolerence that we are seeing in responce to it. intolerence is what dumbledore was fighting against, and it is sad that we are having to deal with it here at leaky. if you want to be intolerent of people who are different, go to ann coulter’s offical web forum, but please, dont bring it here.

dumbledore was a very moral person who fell in loved with someone of the same gender. dumbledore’s sexuality those not cancel out his century+ of work fighting to protect people, fighting for the rights of magical creatures and the muggleborns. he fought against voldemort. that is still true of him even now that we know he loved gellert as more then a friend.

Avatar Image says:

A wave of tolerance can defeat the most shocking of surfs! Congrats, Melissa, and the strength of TLC for providing a “safe” forum to do battle with a “lack” of information! If MSNBC has chosen this “pitch” to open The Forum, vie for Jo’s concerns for “tolerance”. Tolerance will win out! — ELC

Avatar Image says:

LONG LIVE J.K. ROWLING!! THOSE WHO AGREE JOIN ME AS I SAY HAZZAH!!!

And I STILL love Dumbledore!! And I never will stop! When Jk announced the news I was shocked but never mad nor was I ever sad! People! Don’t turn on Jk! She’s the one who brought this magical story to life!

I can’t say it enough!! JK wrote these books to teach us! To teach us about the incredable power of LOVE! The power that protected Harry from Voldemort! She wrote it to teach us to be tolerant of others! Just as wizards must be tolerant to muggles and muggleborns we must be tolerant to people that are different than us!!

Avatar Image says:

“Leaky UPDATE: Due to breaking news about bad wildfires in California, the second segment with Melissa will not be on, alas.”

Alas indeed. Though I hope they put out those wildfires quickly.

Avatar Image says:

NO!! I was so looking forward to hearing her speak!! Urgh!! Wildfires!! :(

Avatar Image says:

I have done publicity for various school activities. You always pray for a SLOW news day because the minute there is a disaster, a car chase, a celebrity arrest … they lose all interest in the neat things kids are doing!

: o (

Avatar Image says:

So did the first segment air? If so has anyone got a video?

Avatar Image says:

“Oh nevermind, the show at 8:00 is Countdown with Keith Ovarymann. something like that.”

LOL!

I love Keith’s show…definitely won’t miss it tonight!!!

Avatar Image says:

I really respect JKR for admitting that she’s always thought of Dumbledore as gay, because honestly, why shouldn’t she? I can’t understand why people have a prejudice against those who are homosexual. It’s just not right! And I am quite proud of Jo for saying what many believe to be controversial, because she is proving that society should not be interfering with who you chose to love. It really backs the books’ overall theme of the power of love in its many forms. Congrats to Jo and to Melissa for this stand!

Avatar Image says:

There’s a video and article posted here:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21407911/

Unfortunately it’s not the one with Melissa.

Avatar Image says:

its the sad thing about life. the harry potter books carry a strong thread that is combatting biggotry and racisem and slavery, but it was shocking to see just how many proclaimed harry potter fans are bigotted. its sad. kudos to jo for presenting such themes, and the horrors that happen in the name of bigotted hatred can have, and shame on those who are living examples of it, and yet claim to be fans of the harry potter books.

Avatar Image says:

Keith Olbermann’s show just started, and he said something along the lines of “Forget about the gay character, wait until you hear what JK Rowling told me before she went on stage” – he’s going to talk about it soon! Turn on MSNBC folks :)

Avatar Image says:

I’m so sorry I missed Melissa earlier! I caught the tail end of the Keith Olbermann segment and it was very good. I love that he equated Dolores Umbridge with Dick Cheney. I’m going to have to start calling him Chumbridge from now on LOL!

I hope Melissa’s segment can be seen, taped, posted at some point. Thank you Lady M. for being such a valiant voice.

Avatar Image says:

The hoopla over this revelation is just silly… the character is purely fictional and the news are just over it, like they haven’t got more relevant and important stuff to talk about…

Still, it’s nice to hear Melissa (aka The Ultimate Voice of Reason) share her thoughts on the matter on TV, even if the news is over it like white on rice.

Avatar Image says:

Okay can you say missed the point…Keith’s show, “shocked and amazed” at the political underlinings of the books….HELLO! Has any of these people read the books?

Avatar Image says:

I’m sure Melissa did a nice job! I am happy that the news folks think the fan-dom is newsworthy!

Avatar Image says:

Hey I was just wondering is the special going to be on any other time?

Avatar Image says:

Outlandish sensationalist media hype. Keith Olbermann with his “countdown” built the whole 60 minute program (including the President’s declaration for additional military support, VP Cheney’s “warnings”, the Republican debate, MAJOR Forest Fires in Southern California, AND Mercedes Benz commercials) around his “concealed” weapon —that JKR suggested a theme against (absolute? outright?)trust in authority.

Well it backfired on him. He interviewed LIVE Chris Cillizza from The Washington Post who clarified: She told YOU – I didn’t hear her say it (not direct quote). Minutes later, Keith, seemed to apologize to Jo for quoting her out of context.

I neither read in the series, nor have heard from her comments, that she advocates CHALLENGING authority. Not trust = Learn more when you have the opportunity; don’t let others make your decisions for you, imho. ELC

Avatar Image says:

So I watched Countdown in it’s entirety (like I do every night! yay Keith!) and here’s what basically went down:

He started out the show saying that JK Rowling revealed something HUGE to him backstage that would make Dumbledore being gay seem like nothing, and that he’d talk about it later in the show. But when he finally got to the HP segment he said that he didn’t think it would be appropriate to reveal what Jo said to him without getting her permission first. So he then changed gears and about Dumbledore being gay as well as Jo’s statement to the Carnegie audience that the books teach children to question authority.

The point here? Keith knows something huge! I hope we find out what it is sooner or later! He said he didn’t want to mention it “without getting approval from JK Rowling first” so there’s still hope…

Avatar Image says:

Why does it matter whether or not Dumbledore is gay? It’s not like he’s doing anything inappropriate in the school or with school-related things, right? Hey. It’s not like he emailed nude pictures of himself to a lover or rival lover. (ah-hem hsm) Gimme a break. Not that I’m a big liberal or anything, but homosexuality is part of the real world. Deal with it. It’s a waste of time to get upset over things like this – things that you can’t change. And it doesn’t change the fact that Rowling is a fantastic author or that the actgors in the movies are awesome and deserve every applaud they get. Hurrah JK. Hurrah HP. Oh, and by the way? Saw D.R.’s pix. YAY! That’s talent!

Avatar Image says:

It’s called totalitarianism. The ministry takes over the the daily prophet sensors what the people can read and what news gets to them, so the people are ignorant to what is going on. Keep them ignorant…keep them happy. In the 7th book you can not “trust” the ministry because they are infiltrated with death eaters and are rounding up jews…I mean muggle borns and imprisoning them.

It is quite obvious in the books that she tries to teach tolerence and common sense in these books and right and wrong good verses evil, and sometimes your government aka the ministry of Magic aka Nazi German, do things that go against common sense and are flat out evil.

The point is that some people have to stand up and question what is going on so things like the Holocaust don’t happen again.

Avatar Image says:

Keith had a “little fun” with the Republican debate, pointing out the many number of times that Sen. Clinton’s name was mentioned (more than the debaters’). It seems Sen. Clinton did almost as well as JKR.

He did seems to say there was more that he wanted to share, but needed to get Jo’s OK. Still, be careful when messing with her themes.

Avatar Image says:

I loved the Keith Olberman segment on it but I was dissapointed to miss Melissa. kudos though to JKR who struck another blow for tolerance in adding an interesting and important dimension to this most respected literary character.

Avatar Image says:

You know, now that we’ve heard from fans who were there, it’s interesting that she hesitated… It’s the constant hesitation that every lesbian or gay man has to do…I was asked about my spouse, do I come out, or is this another homophobe who’s going to dismiss me or attack me if I do… When at the hospital, do you use birth control? (Yes, her name’s Karen).....do you come out or do you insist that there is NO possibility you could be pregnant…what if the health care professional has been brought up in a religion that teaches you that “homosexuals” are really child abusers…..what kind of health care will you receive…

Not surprisingly, JKR took the gutsy way out…

Avatar Image says:

dumbledore gay? why? was it really neccessary to make a gay character? what about all the other adult males who are not married or in a realtionship are they all gay too? i think her coming out and saying dumbeldore is gay takes a lot away from dumbledore, and changes the way i view the book ill never think of him the same way when im reading the book

Avatar Image says:

Oh and while I am on it (cause I am patriotic) the (USA) constitution gives us a right to question our government and question the authority of our government…it is not an evil concept. And obviously what has happend in the last 6 years we do have reason to question our government. The books spell it out for you….the establishment of the daily prophet and Fudge fueling it to lie about Harry and Dumbledore,

Or are we supposed to take what the newspapers, and our government say and believe everything. Cause you know you see what happened in Germany when they just let the government get away with what they did for so long…..The books have a very strong line against ignorance and indifference…the Dursley’s and the centaurs they aren’t painted in a very good light, the centaurs just let things happen, as did the ministry up till book 7 when they became a bigger part of the problem, not only ignorance but acting participants. It was the kids at Hogwarts and the kids in general were the ones that helped sway the war not the parents who were not ready to face what was happening even though they knew what was going on and that it would eventually come down to it. Why is being muggle born matter? It doesn’t…the same as it doesn’t matter if you are a jew, an african, a muslim, an indian (that goes for both india and native americans) a white, a hispanic. She points out the ridiculousness of racism and predjudice. There is no reason governments should every make a ruling on anything based on what color your skin is, or what tribe you are from 500 years ago or a year ago or belong to now…its called tollerance and fairness, its what we are supposed to have in the US and I just think the politicalness is just spelled out plainly in the books.

Avatar Image says:

I’m not upset that he’s gay. I’m upset that it makes absolutely NO literary sense for him to be so. She has never hinted at there even being a gay portion of the wizarding world, let alone that D was. It would be just as insulting and asinine if she said he was an avid hunter. I just doesn’t fit anything else she’s ever said about him or any other wizard/witch for that matter. No sense at all. I’ll never stop reading the books, but her announcement feels false to me.

Avatar Image says:

Hear! Hear! Excelent point, Carebie! We neither discount the establishment, nor the media. But we must choose to trust. Blind faith is just that – blind. But don’t send me out without direction, understanding, a basis for guaging “right” from “wrong”. Encourage change, in a positive direction. The Declaration of Independence does not advocate “casting off” the government. Certain predecessors must cause such a decline for the government to reach a point of “despotism” before such action be taken.

But there are times, and effective ways, for constructive, legal and social change.

Avatar Image says:

I think it is absolutely disgusting that a childrens author would use a platform such as a childs novel to push the agenda of homosexuality.

Your quote on Yahoo news of

“By dubbing someone so respected, so talented and so kind, as someone who just happens to be also homosexual, she’s reinforcing the idea that a person’s gayness is not something of which they should be ashamed.”

You are addressing a fictional character as if he were real. I wouldn’t want some fictional author to address such an important issue as human sexuality with a young child. What is her novel’s target age? People who shouldn’t even be thinking about sexuality yet.

Boo hiss boo!

Avatar Image says:

I wish she didnt comment on that question at all. it seems like she just gave an answer that would send the media back to harry potter books after her final book was written and read. it makes me mad that she would give us that information when it should be up to the reader to interpret the book themselves. did she plan on m aking dumbledore gay all along? or was this just some off hand response to a question thrown at her suddenly. either way, it didnt seem to me that dumbledore was gay and id rather not think of him as some part of a gay rights movement or anything more than what he actually was in the books.

[NOTE: its not that i am against him being gay, i just wish that if jk rowling planned on him being gay all along, it should have been made clearer in the books rather than the way she presented it. it just seems fake]

Avatar Image says:

Oh man….I was working so I missed all of this. I hope they’ll be something in the video galleries or you tube soon though. I’m sure you did an excellent job representing us as usual Melissa.

Avatar Image says:

So Dumbledore is gay. I will not read anothet Harry Potter book again. And before you all start flipping, this has nothing to do with intolerance. There is absolutely no reason for that. It dioes not add to the story at all. If anything, a highly original story has just caved in to the current “cliche” of modern pop culture…inserting a gay character not to advance anty plot lines but just to have a gay character. Too bad, it was such a good series.

To those who might still think I’m intollerant…so what.

Avatar Image says:

I was still hoping to see whatever was aired on TV pt on You Tube for those who couldn’t catch it. If that’s been done, can someone put a link here please? Thanks!

Avatar Image says:

To James and Vince: Go somewhere else then. The fandom wont miss you..

Someone please post a link. I can’t wait to see Melissa’s interview! BTW re-read the King’s Cross chapter of DH. I was sobbing tonight reading this, now understanding more about Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s relationship. Sooo tragic. Poor Albus!

Avatar Image says:

i think the fact that dumbledore being gay is stupid. if i had known that he was gay in the earlier books, i would not have read them. Oh, and for those who are saying that dumbledore being gay is a good thing, screw you. Its not good to be gay and having someone like dumbledore, a huge idle for many people, be gay will make people think that being homosexual is an alright thing. being homsexual is not a good thing. If God thought that being gay was a good thing, then only men would have been created.

Avatar Image says:

pity are the judgmental, for they shall remain ignorant. we are finding out who the real, trueblue Harry Potter fans are… the genuine supporters and admirers of Jo. for those who can’t understand the revelations the author shares with us - for those who spreads hateful words because we know now that Dumbledore is gay but NEVERTHELESS the greatest wizard of his age - feel free get off our platform of 9 3/4.

Avatar Image says:

Frank, I think you are look for the word “idol”.. I’m glad that you seem to “understand” the thoughts of God, perhaps you should write a book. I would be careful going around speaking for God though if you really believe in Him. To those who feel this “changes” Dumbledore, it doesn’t. He’s still the same character. His being gay was never meant to be his defining quality, and it shouldn’t be in anyone. I would guess this was why she would hesitate to mention it or make it more obvious in the story. Its not central to his character or the story. Its silly the way some of you are behaving. Are you an adult or are you a child? James: As for young children, they will probably never know unless someone tells them. Second of all, you might be surprised how early in life children come face to face with issues like this. Perhaps you don’t have children in school. I have a brother in middle school and one in high school. I have several friends that are grade school/ middle school teachers. It would probably rock your world to know what grade school children are already exposed to through their peers and/or even their families. Finally, if your child does find out and they understand what it means, why not talk to your child about the issue?

Avatar Image says:

James, Dumbeldore’s sexual orientation is never addressed in the book, so children reading the story wouldn’t be “exposed.” As for introducing sexuality to children, did you complain when we saw Ron and Harry making out with their girlfriends? That is clearly sexual.

Stephanie, a reader asked her a question and she responded. She has notebooks full of back story on every character. That is why she is writing an encyclopedia eventually. So it’s not likely that she decided at the last second to make him gay, especially when she said she had to correct the script of HBP which she signed off on months ago.

Vince, I agree that this new bit of info doesn’t add much to the story, but it does add a little more backstory to Dumbledore. It’s just an interesting factoid that is being blown out of proportion. And yes You are intolerant.

Frank, I’m surprised that you hate the books now because of a small detail. And yes being gay is okay, because God made gays. Shocker, I know.

I think I’m done arguing this. I’ve spent too many hours listening and responding to this garbage, that it’s making me sick. People are making a much bigger deal of this than it needs to be on both sides. Just let it go…

Avatar Image says:

I’m a little confused as to why so many people think it doesn’t make any sense that Dumbledore is gay. I mean, we’ve established that on some level, the books are meant to mirror life – and there are noble, powerful gays in the world, why not in the HP world?

I’ve not heard anyone complaining about the fact that there are characters from every race and background in the books – and gasp there was even interracial DATING! There was very little complaint, I think because we’ve outgrown that sort of childish behavior. People are people, period. It makes no difference who they love as long as they do love. (I mean – isn’t that the point?)

I’m not fussed and I think it fits Dumbledore’s characterization just fine. Now, if she were to tell me he was a Slytherin. . . . . (just kidding – Slytherins are people too, I suppose!)

Avatar Image says:

Actually I think DD being gay is totally consistent with how his character is portrayed as an awesome, clever, standup dude that sticks up for outcasts.

now pardon my french but where the hell are these videos?

Avatar Image says:

Why does Melissa’s opinion have any relevance to this, and for that matter, why does Dumbledore’s sexualtiy have to be an issue anyway? I was fully supportive of anything that Jo did because I felt that Harry Potter was a wholesome entity, but now I’m not so sure. Harry Potter was completely untainted by the society’s obsession with sex and that made me defensive of it. My children don’t need to be consumed with sex and sexual situations at their ages. They, and I, need something to depend on. I thought we had that in Harry, but I was obviously mistaken.

Avatar Image says:

Perhaps had the HP series not achieve the “unheard of” tremendous, steady support of readers – all over the world (60+ languages) within a relatively short period of time, issues currently addressed might not be so pronounced.

That HP is a “household” term, looked for or not, sensitivities are raised in a manner, and on a scale, that startles readers, non-readers, the media, and even politics.

Tolerance, imho, might be addressed regarding addressing the sharp reactions by individuals who have been swept up by the HP phenomenon, willfully or not. I don’t see it as “damage control.” Rather, it needs to be understood that JKR is NOT “just another successful writer of children’s (non-children’s) fiction.

Do we realize the impact that HP currently has on the (world) economy, (world) politics – particularly in an upcoming pivotal US election year? I would not be surprised to find JKR/HP a major theme in the 2008 US Presidential race.

Tolerance IS a theme of the series.

sorry about the cali thing!! the fire was right in my back yard tho!! We almost caught on fire!!

Avatar Image says:

larenda, Melissa’s opinion counts because she was the one who was to be interviewed.

And how have the Harry Potter books been tainted by sex just by Jo mentioning that a character was gay? Why would you associate homosexuality with ‘sex’ and not heterosexuality? How do you think Harry and Ron became father’s?

And children should be encourages to accept the variety of humanity. In this world, not everyone shares the same skin colour, religion, nationality, ethnicity, sexuality and culture. The sooner children understand that, the more comfortable they will be in their own skin.

Avatar Image says:

Keith Olbermann’s show was terrible!!! How can he compare UMBRIDGE with Dick Chaney!! It’s retarted!! JK never compared the two! It’s just his wacky opinion!! I never watch him because I HATE his news! Curiosity overcame me though! I bet the only reason he covered that story was to badmouth the Bush administration as ALWAYS!!

Avatar Image says:

I am honest, I was surprised to hear that Albus Dumbledore, the world’s wisest Headmaster was gay! Astonished yes, but not disappointed in any way – against the character Dumlbedore or more so – Jo. But now I have to admit, I am very disgusted with what some of the “so-called Potterfans have to say on this theme.

I live in Switzerland and have always admired you american people. You have a beautiful country – a great language – which almost the whole world understand’s and speaks ( an advantage in my eyes) – famous writers – Nobel-prize winners Presidents who have been loved by the rest of the world celebrity’s and so on. When I was a child, we all wanted to come over and stay in your country, because we thought you were the height of cool. And now this – hem hem…we do still live in the Middle Ages, do we now… Welcome to the world of Dolores Umbridge! My cousin is a lesbian…I suppose that makes me a Half-Blood now! In my youth we used to love the Beatles…oh yes…they told us they had bad influence and forbid us to listen to them…perfect…the more they forbade it..the more we bought their records!

Go on – burn the HP books….and your children will want to read them more than ever..and least but not last – to know what all the fuss is about…! The young generation of today has not been living under a rock! They just have to turn on the television and watch the news.(..and don’t tell me, you have it ALL under control what your kids are watching!) Politicans who are corrupt, clergymen who abuse children, young men sent to a senseless war in the middle East – and you are shocked because Albus loved in his boyhood Gellert Grindelwald. Using Sirius Black’s word’s: The world is not devided into good or bad – gay or not gay. I apply on all your good sense – show tolerance – after all – we have spent the last ten years in an amazing dream – we were united – young and old – black and white – mankind for once united! @Michèle: And now this – hem hem…we do still live in the Middle Ages, do we now… Welcome to the world of Dolores Umbridge!

I hope someone posts a link to the show, I don’t think we get it here in Canada (at least not where I am at)

Just a few random thoughts on the issue:

Dumbledore is gay. So what? I’d rather my children know gay people than some hetero people since they are WAY more respectful, kinder, and accepting than some straight people I know. That’s the kind of people I think all children should know—straight or gay.

Secondly, I despise the word tolerance. I face this everyday where I live. My child is half white and half Korean and in my little town most people are white. Every year I have gone into her school to teach the children about Korean culture (and about my daughter’s family) Even though I make huge efforts to make my daughter’s life easier at school, inevitably there is going to be one child who will say or do something disrespectful. My aim is not tolerance, it is acceptance whether it is your sexual orientation, race or religion (my best friend grew up Mennonite!)

Thirdly, JKR wrote about a world that SHOULD be—a world where folks get along, accept each other whether they were black, white, Asian (trust me my daughter wants to be Harry’s girlfriend!)gay, straight, married, single, werewolf, giant, muggle, muggleborn, pure blood etc… there is just as much strife over these things in the book as there is in the real world. I like her world and I wish that we had a huge Voldemort-Harry battle that would change things infinitely for the better but I know that there are always going to be hateful, fearful people out there and in their hearts they have no room for someone like my daughter or someone like Dumbledore.

I am too amazed that this gay thing has become such an issue, to me it is just a given like the sky is blue, the world is round, flowers are pretty. Doesn’t change the fact DD was a wonderful, wonderful person and I am glad all children got a chance to know and love him in the books.

Tolerance for who?

For what other reason other than Rowling’s personal views and apparently pro-gay/Christain hating agenda that she felt she had to mention this drivelous crap. It is completely worthless information in regard to the story!!!! How does this information play into the story? Do future chapters take place in a gay bar? “Harry Potter and the Evil Bathouse”. Please.

What this character does in his closet when he isn't the headmaster is of no importance.
A better world Melissa? What a crock. Most of the straight world is tolerant - (including Christains) haven't an issue with this until it is shoveled openly into their face when it has no place in the story to begin with.

To adress “PM”’s statements:

Jo only mentioned this “crap” because someone asked her about it in a question. She isnt shoving it in your face. For almost the entire series, DD’s sexual orientation has no relevance. He is an old man, well past sexual desires no doubt, and you would be hard pressed to find him in any bar aside from Hog’s Head or the Three Broomsticks. All this news does is inform a little more about his heart break over Grindewald’s reign of terror.

PM, if you failed to see Christianity theme in the books – then you are, forgive me, totally BLIND.

I’ve been thinking about this whole “we should tolerate the intolerant” thing. Well, no we should’t. I think (or at least hope) that none of us would tolerate a racist, even if this racist didn’t actually beat anyone up but simply insulted people of other nations. How the hell is this different? So, would you tolerate a racist? And how is a homophobe any better than a racist?

And there had been sexuality in the books. Or maybe you think that Tonks got pregnant because they kissed? On the other hand, the fact that Dumbledore is gay doesn’t even mean that he had ever had sex with anyone. He simply fell in love with a man. We don’t know anything else about this part of his life. Maybe we all should first think before saying stuff?

I shall have to see what I can do about altering my “No Muggles” rule – I have come across some muggles the last few days who would make fine Death Eaters

And also, all you HOLY BELIEVERS! Doesn’t the Bible say something like that: “You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.” SO don’t shove your religion into our faces.

WOW. After listening to Pottercast and all the talk of controversy, I’ve come to Leaky to see the comments and I am shocked that this has caused such an uproar in the US. There was brief mention of it in the Scottish Sunday newspapers and we haven’t heard a peep about it since. It’s NO BIG DEAL people! Get a grip!

Avatar Image says:

PM, I would say the answer to your post is that you merely do not understand the avid fans of the series. Many fans want to know every little detail about the characters. Little tidbits like eye color that really have nothing or little to do with the story are some of the things we want to know. Someone asked a question. she answered the question. Rowling does not have a Christian hating agenda. I would say she does have an anti-hate theme in her books. I think some people coming in here proclaiming God’s opinions for Him and calling their messages of hate and anger “Christian” would do well to love a little more, to quit spreading hate and discord. I suspect your messages have little to do with God and more to do with your own discomfort. Larenda, the books are no more ””tainted with sex” than they were before.. However, you might consider that human sexuality is natural.

I would like to make a suggestion, not sure how everyone would go for this…Instead of further debating the DD thing here, can it be done on the chat/message board instead? It seems to me that the “news” section should stay on topic. In this case, it’s about LL staff doing an interview. I’m just offering a suggestion because I’m starting to see a re-hashing of everything that’s been said over the past few days. That’s all. Thanks!

Avatar Image says:

...and snogging is just another word for holding hands.

Avatar Image says:

@ Larenda,

Some one already responded to you but I feel compelled to put my own two knuts in. Don’t go there with Melissa. She is a very respected individual within the Harry Potter fandom, so much so that JKR herself invited her and her POttercast mates Sue and John to thank them for all of their efforts. If you don’t agree with her support of JKR’s revalation about Dumbledore than that is your right, but she is more than entitled to her opinion and you have no right to say that her opinion doesn’t count. What’s more she accurately exaplined what JKR meant by this revalation.

Avatar Image says:

PM- I guess you haven’t read the actual chat. It doesn’t play into the story but she answered A STUPID QUESTION. I’m still amazed at this outrage from people like you, PM, considering that there are millions of black people still suffering the effects of Slavery because “good Christians” like yourself bondaged them in that way. Screw you and your beliefs.

PM needs to grow up. J.K. Rowling is a life long chirstian and has never protrayed herself as anything else. however ever noticed how only the fringe of the faith are gaybashers? because like people of color and woman, all who 300 years ago were defamed and subjucated under chirstian values are now given/working towards having equality.

If you would educate yourself, you would learn that homosexuality only became a taboo when the judeo chirstian movement worked to convert the romans of the pre hellenistic period to judeochirstian faith from a time when homosexuality was not declaimed but as accepted as a common practice.

J.K. Rowling is taking a stand against intolerence. she has viewed dumbledore as gay for years, and she is being truthful. I am a life long in the fold practicing chirstian, and I support jk rowling’s honesty. I can say factially that some of the worst people I have ever met in my life, the most morally bankrupt I have ever had to bear witness to were chirstians, and some of the kindest most humaine, giving, and compassionite people I have had the pleasure of knowing were gay.

Oh, goodness, folks in Scotland and Germany and Switzerland….please don’t abandon us….there are those here who are tolerant, accepting, and caring people. Please don’t think we are all like some of the people on this list who have been bleating every single right wing myth like it was gospel. Please notice how wonderful Melissa and the Leaky gang are! They’re Americans, too! I am cringing that this horrible reaction is coming from America. I am so embarrassed. You have to understand that we have a totally immoral group of politicians in power here right now. They themselves admit that they don’t really care about immorality. The V-P has a lesbian daughter. But in order to gain power, they have been pandering to the “religious” right, and whipping everyone up into an anti-gay frenzy. This way they can get the “religious” right to the polls and stay in power. Karl Rove explained it. They don’t believe in the values of the “religious” right – they’re just exploiting them. Jim Webb (senator in the state of Virginia) won the election BECAUSE the issue of gay marriage is losing steam with the voters…...and lesbians and gays and their allies and supporters REALLY turned out….so you’ll probably hear a lot less anti-gay rhetoric in this next election. Bear with us, please, some of us are trying very, very hard to get rid of our current government. Susan

i dont understand why people on this site think just because people get upset that dumbledore is gay that there not true harry potter fans. i think it is completely unnecessary to have a gay character and takes a lot away from a book that doesnt make me any less of a fan then you because i have a different view on dumbeldore being gay. also dont call people ignorant “joycemorrison” just because they are judgemental about dumbeldore being gay. her coming out and saying dumbeldore is gay has nothing to do with the book and there was no need to add this. whether it was for publicity or gay righs, there was no need for it. i really dont think when she started writing these books that she had any intent on making a gay character or she would of came out with this from the start. i personally will never look at these books the same, because dumbledore always had something about him that made him seem like a role model and i will never think of him like that again while reading the book simply because i think there is nothing about a gay man that i would idolize, and i really dont care what anybody comments on this, because you have your opinion and i have mine so comment what you want

Well done, Melissa! I just have to remind you that there is no such a country as Czechoslovakia now, it ceased to exist in 1993 when splited into the Czech republic and Slovakia.

Avatar Image says:

Yeha, you’re right, I was just answering things very quickly. :)

Avatar Image says:

Actually I have been assuming that Melissa (and Emerson) would be interviewing JKR during this tour, which apparently is incorrect: perhaps with the Dumbledore revelation an interview would be even more interesting to not just the die-hard Potter-heads but to the news media worldwide as a whole?

I know that many of us have been compiling our questions for JKR, and would like to submit those to Melissa (and Emerson) for JKR to answer….

and now we wait for the ‘encyclopedia’, and only 12 and 1/2 months to wait for the HBP film….

RE: Dumbledore’s sexuality. Actually, beyond the adolsecent infatuation with Grindelwald, Dumbledore is asexual as far as we know. Introducing his sexuality at this point is rather irrelevent—one can “love” emotionally and not take the emotional to a physical stage, which seems to be more to the point than emphasizing sex.

I do wonder tho, about JKR using this revelation to yank Michael Gambon’s chain? Gambon has made a number of public comments about JKR that were unnecessary and stupid, and for him to suddenly be forced to confront a rather different view of his character must be a bit of a shock?

How is this “news” being received and discussed outside the US? Most Europeans have a very different view of sexual orientation…if those of you living in the UK, and in other nations, could post URLs to any newspaper or magazine articles as they appear, that would be interesting and much appreciated…

Dear budb,

Here is a link to a news article writin on the matter from my country.

...and that has been the only mention on it. It really didn’t draw out that much, and it was only mentioned on the radio because one of the hosts had a piece of Sushi that had looked like Dumbledore :P

The attitude was like..”Oh, that makes sense. Whose up for cricket?”

katie – how hard is it to immigrate to your country? This one is driving me nuts. I saw the news giggled to myself then went to walk my dog. I didn’t think it was a big deal until I read the comments.
