ITN now has a feature online that contains a new video interview with actors Dan Radcliffe (Harry), Rupert Grint (Ron), Emma Watson (Hermione) and director David Yates giving their reactions to the news about the character of Dumbledore being gay. This interview was conducted last weekend in London for the press launch of the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix DVD. To watch click here, then on the video box at the top of the screen.

Thea, think about what author you’re talking about. JK Rowling does not do “last minute inventions.” Why was it not mentioned in the books? Because it’s not relevant to the plot. While we’re at it, a lot of other characters’ sexual orientations are irrelevant, like (I just picked three characters at random) Neville’s, Mundungas Fletcher’s, Katie Bell’s, etc etc.

By the way, the title of this article… “Dumbledore Revelation”? Anyone else find that a bit weird?

This only illustrates the essential problem with the “outing”; that it was so unnecessary and it threatens to overshadow the next two movies. I thought Rupert Grint’s obvious reaction portrayed the shock that most people really felt when JKR f made that unfortunate comment.

So, I take it he’s still gay…

Not mentioning he is gay and not knowing he is gay are two different things. Tell me, what does Harry knowing about Dumbledore’s sexuality have anything to do with his mission?

“I do however have a problem with Dumbledore not even knowing that he’s gay. That’s just careless writing.”

No it isn’t. The books are seen from Harry’s point of view, so what it really happening in them is that Harry doesn’t know DD is gay, and why would he? Why would DD tell him when, he kept his friendship with Grindelwald secret from everyone?

I aggree with Emma Watson : ” it all makes sense, now ”. We had a few hints, occasionally, that he was odd. Now we can relate to these instances and we can understand their true significance. It is all very amusing.

Let us smile and carry on with life.

I love Yates, he is really very thoughtful about the characters. I also agree with what Emma said.

About the criticism that there were no clues to Dumbledore´s sexual orientation in the books: Well, since Dumbledore´s sexuality did not at all pertain to the story and the plot and was not to be revealed in the books anyway, there didn´t have to be any clues. It was just an additional background information on the character given by JKR upon asked a direct question. Apart from that, a couple of people had caught on it before, so there seem to have been very sublte clues (although admittedly, I didn´t catch on them, but that doesn´t say much really ;) )

Lolz This might sound really wierd but… I liked how Daniel Radcliffe said “gay”. I like hearing how people say the word (is that wierd of me?). 0_0 I also liked the way David Yates said “sexuality” .... does anyone else like to do that or is it just me???? seriously it was kewl he said it like he was rolling a sweet around in his mouth and gestured his hands like he was trying to grasp the concept of sexuality laughs. Daniel started scratching himself and looked at the floor in preparation of saying “gay” psychologically indicating mild discomfort… lol we should make celebrities say sexually indicative words all the time TIS FUN to analyze!!

Any hope we could hear less about this?

Hahaha. This Dumbledore being gay thing really won’t ever get old to me. Upon finding out I was shocked, of course, I mean—I thought Leaky had been hacked! I then immediately thought about Grindelwald and how it makes sense, and mostly realized it doesn’t have any impact on me, when it comes to my thoughts of his character. He’s not a sexual being, and all I was interested in was the fan art that I knew was going to come out. Avatars galore. This period in the fandom is amazing and I’m happy the fandom got a little spark, even though its reaction generally was a bit more um…widespread than I expected. I love Dumby, always will. The trio’s reaction and especially Yates’ thoughts were interesting to see. Dumbledore FTW!

I really don’t think this is going to have an impact on the film, other then them NOT putting in the scene where Dumbledore talks about “that girl he knew”. Which they shouldn’t have written in the script anyway since its not in the books. I’m glad Jo corrected them.

It does fit. Although I did not see that coming!! That was definately a shocker!

If Joe corrected them about “that girl he knew”, at the time of the filming, she was fully intended in making that anouncement at a later date.

That was very honest on her part.

Wish I could have heard a full response from Rupert, but then again he never realky much. Dan is usually very mature but he kind of got a bit schholboy-ish about this (though I suspect that was deliberate – to show some people how stupid they’ve been about this subject).

Lovely mature response from Miss Watson, and yes, David Yates obviously understands the characters in the books. He also understands that not everyone who is gay where’s it like a flashing light for everyone to see, so there is no need to make it ‘obvious’ (whatever that entails) in the films.

Oops, typos all over my post there lol. I meant ‘schoolboy-ish’ when refgering to Dan’s response, and for Rupert ‘but then again he never really says much’.
