J.K. Rowling...A Year in the Life Documentary Airs on ITV
J.K. RowlingTonight, the “J.K. Rowling…A Year in the Life” documentary by James Runcie was broadcast in the UK on ITV, and is now being playedon iTV’s web site.
We have early reports on some of the new things contained in the program. TLC reader Andy writes that after Jo completed writing “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Jo “puts on the page numbers and plays Lily Allen’s “Smile.” Andy writes that new artwork “for Ollivanders at Universal can briefly be seen,” and Jo would “like to be remembered as someone who did “the best she could, with the talent she had.”
Readers will remember that we saw three preview clips from the documentary (clip one, preview clip two, and this trailer) with the media currently making much ado of a question posed in the recent Time magazine interview, and posed in this video regarding a possible eight book, but as we saw, Jo says No. Specifically, she said “I think no, it’s time to stop, it’s time to stop now. It gives me a certain satisfaction to say what I thought happened and to tell other people that, because I would like my version to be the official version still, even though I’ve not written it in a book, because it’s my world.” As we first reported several days ago, there is new information in the documentary about the second generation of students at Hogwarts, found in the form of a handwritten family tree that you can see here in our galleries, or via the office on JKRowling.com. Thanks Andy!

Sorry – I didn’t mean to be repetitive. I didn’t realize links to youtube were already posted

Thank you very, very much Jo.
The way interrogation bits where questions were thrown at her felt, it was like she had taken Veritiserum. That’s how it felt to me. So, I suppose, very open. I felt she was really opening herself up to us, which really is huge. And is therefore a huge help. I really feel it deepened the meaning of the books for me.
So, thank you Jo.

Thank you for posting the youtube files. It was lovely. I was hoping the documentary would focus more on what she does in a year, how she writes, how she comes up with ideas, etc. But beggars can’t be choosers. I’m very happy that she did this. Thanks Jo!

And she will be remebered not only as a person who did the best with her talent but as the one who change my life for good.

Oh that is so bizarre. When I was watching it earlier and they were talking about the letters she gets, I thought I saw my handwriting on one. I went back later and, sure enough, it was! That was from back in March . . . how completely amazing!

Wow wow wow, Meghan!! That’s awesome! Did you ever get a reply from her? I’ve been thinking about writing to her again, I did once but never got any kind of reply (alright, an email from Scholastic hinting there was no chance she’d ever see it, but nothing on paper, not even a form letter or an HP bookmark).

Marcheline, you could hear Jo in the background telling him to be honest, she didn’t want him to say something nice, she wanted him to be honest and say she wasn’t always easy to be around, that is the point of something like this.
After all, she made some fairly pointed comments about her father which would be making him feel a bit uncomfortable, but that’s what happens when you are being honest.
I thought her husband’s comments gave a very interesting insight into Jo’s pysche and the effect that both her background and the fame that Harry has brought her have on the way she copes with pressure in her life.

thanks for clearing up the mystery of the flat. In my minds eye the flat in the BBC documentary was a pokey old place.

I did get a reply back (it was the third time, too). I truly can’t thank Jo enough for it, either. She’s such a sweet person and it’s so impressive that she takes the time to write back to fans.

I just watched the show and am truely in awe. I have always wondered about the process and Jo’s process in particular in terms of what goes into making each HP book. (One of my most burning questions was about what Jo did directly after finishing book 7. )This past year has been one full of excitement and tears for all Harry fans. (On launch night I honestly cried for fifteen minutes before going off to the bookstore for the last midnight event.) This documentary was a beautifual way to end the most fantastic HP year ever; it marks the end but leaves the door wide open with the hope of all that the future has in store. Thank you Jo so much for letting us all in. I was and am still right now touched and moved beyond belief at all that I just witnessed. Happy new year to all. Tonight, all really is well!

A touching documentary. I cried the whole time. It feels a little intrusive to read Harry Potter as it seems like it is such a private thing for Jo. The apartment Harry Potter reader though needs to update their Harry Potter books they only have the first five. An amazing documentary though. Well done!

I just finished it and it was just absolutely brilliant. I have to admit that I cried a little bit which surprised me because I very rarely cry. But watching it made me feel something. It’s as if it reached deep inside me and brushed the edge of my soul for a second. I can’t really describe it.

In Belgium, it airs on January 3rd on a channel called “Eén”. I think around 9pm (if I remember correctly).
The trailers were really good – it looks interesting!

I was wondering who’s name she got from her old church Register?

The entire documentary is now on YouTube…i just watched it and it is simply breathtaking…http://youtube.com/profile?user=theycallmemrglass…here you will find it in 7 parts

Wonderful, wonderful documentary; Jo is such a lovely woman…
But why on earth does the reporter sound like it´s a documentary about a funeral (esp. the first two episodes)?

To all those thanking me for uploading on Youtube, you are all most welcome. I uploaded quickly for selfish reasons, Ie I wanted to chat about it and not feel alone in being part of just a few to have watched it ;) the most poignant part for me is her visit back to her flat. She obviously had such a struggle and suffering clinical depression is not something to be taken lightly. My favourite part is the last part, how she accepts what she is and the way she answers her “characteristic” questions so quickly and definitively, tells me, she knows exactly who she is, her good points and her flaws. That makes her such a wonderful idol for me.

And to anyone wondering if I uploaded in 7 parts deliberately, answer is no, it was accidental but how magical is that!

I wonder if the reason for all the inconsistencies and poor characterizations in the last book was because she was being followed by a camera crew and not shut away in a room writing?
