Spoil Us Not, Sneaks!: A refresher on Leaky's pre-book policy

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

OK peoples. It's just about that time: A few months away from the book. THE book. We're getting a lot of e-mails about spoilers - and not just the kind where you say, "You may not want to read my theory because it's totally a spoiler." Thanks for the warning - we had no idea Snape was a body surfer! Awesome!
Anyway, the books will soon be printed. Sometime in the next few weeks we'll hear all sorts of ridiculous things, such as:

  • The book magically appeared in a field ("Phoenix": Remember how the person who found it just happened to call the ever-magnanimous tab "The Sun," who then printed a review that basically read, "Nanny-nanny-poo-poo, we've read it and you haven't"?).
  • Or, a bunch of bets for Harry to live / for Harry to die came out of the town where the books are being printed ("Half-Blood Prince": Remember the bets on Dumbly?).
  • Even, perhaps, that there was a pistol shootout / watergun showdown / spaghetti-slinging match over stolen copies (again, "Half-Blood Prince." That is, just the pistol part).

And then there are the little spoiler-zone pockets, which crop up in strange places. Last time, a big leak came from a librarian who decided to dig in a few days early and post the results on her journal. Bookstore workers have also been responsible for leaks (though, we understand how working in a store where unopened Potters lurk evilly can be a form of torture acceptable in old-school Salem). Before HBP's release, someone on a military base in Malaysia got hold of the book and scanned in every first chapter page, the summary, and the whole final chapter, and sent it to Leaky. Some staffers were intensely spoiled. Some staffers are still bitter. Some staffers curse this person's name.

The powers that be seem even more prepared for this spoiler scenario this time. There are talks of extreme security measures, of chains and locks and last-minute deliveries.

BRING IT, we say.

Here it is, a refresher on Leaky's spoiler policy:

Ahem.

DON'T DO IT.

Sending us spoilers will get you one place, bucko: sent to Scholastic, Christopher Little, Bloomsbury, and every JoLawyer we can think of. We don't want to see them, we won't post them, and we'd want to stop you. Book revelations aren't to be spurted out in bullet form on a message board. They're to be read, dispersed at the proper moment, given all the context of the story. This is not like the movies, which cannot contain real plot surprises for fans.

If Harry dies, we don't want to know about it until J.K. Rowling decides to tell us. And if you decide to tell us before that, you'll incur the wrath of a staff of almost 200, most of whom have been waiting almost 10 years for these final revelations and can NEVER get back the moment you rob by spoiling them. That's some wrath, right there. We own pitchforks, hot wax and feathers. And we're not afraid to use them.

If, between now and July 21, Jo or her people release a fact about the book, it will be posted on this site, but you will be heavily warned about it beforehand. We understand a lot of you want to remain super-pure from now until then. We admire you, oh white angels.

If it comes from ANYWHERE else - from ANY unofficial source - it will not be on this site. You have no need to worry. We might recognize its existence in a news story, but the actual content of the spoilage won't appear on these pages.

So, bookstore managers, librarians, and people who like to stroll in the fields next to the publishing plants: We appreciate that you feel the need to share your revelations with us. But you'd have better luck and would get a better response if you told your goldfish instead. Watch out, though - we hear the publishing companies are looking into fishbowl surveillance. Mr. FlippityFins just may be a plant.

And if you're that guy who shouted "SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE!" outside the bookshop at 12:01 a.m. on July 16, 2005? Just go away, man. Just go away. Quietly. And we won't hurt you.

Seriously: we're almost there, guys, so let's make sure we respect every other Harry Potter fan we can. It'll be worth it!

I was sent a link in my email. Please everyone be careful. There are spoilers out there. I can not wait till I get my book at midnight on the night of the 20th/morning of the 21st. I can not wait to read the book from beginning to end.

If you do not like spoilers from now till the end you might want to stay off of the unoffical TRUE fan site and searching for harry potter in google. JK Rowling Site is safe as is the-Leaky-Cauldron.

I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I think I will.

Hi Melissa and all the staff at Leaky. How excited are we about this book release! Yes, believe it or not HP mania has been in New Zealand for years! You can’t help but be nervous though. Somehow, standing in a cue for hours to get the book isn’t that appealing to me. I have one booked at my local but want to buy it and read it in my own time, I’m a slow reader and I’m terrified of having it spoiled before then. Someone ruined OOTP for me back when that came out and I was devastated. Very nerve racking!!! Can’t wait though!!! (lets all not open a single email or go online at all until we’ve finished! World wide fan pact? hahaha) Kimberley

When i read HBP…someone had spoiled it for me. I hate character like those, they think they are better cause they’ve read it before you and can’t wait to spoil it for others. Its good you posted this msg. Down with all the spoiler.

I don’t want the book ruined for me, but the Snape kills Dumbledore stuff was kind of funny. I know you all disagree with me, but I thought it was hilarious. I went to the premiere of Ootp in theaters and the girl next to me hadn’t read any of the books. I had to reply with a Sirius dies and Snape kills Dumbledore simply because she came to the premiere of a movie based on books she hasn’t read.

OMG!! ive got the best theory!!

Merope also had two daughters besides Tom Riddle. However we don’t know who they are. I reckon it’s Petunia and Lily. This means that Lily is the heir of Slytherin which means Harry is to. Lily has red hair just like Merope and it would explain why AHrry has the same eyes as Harry who has the same Eyes as Voldemort! This would also explain why Harry can speak Parseltongue. However I think Harry is also the heir of Gryffindor as Harry got Godric Gryffindor’s sword in the 2nd book and James and Lily used to live in Godric’s Hollow! This means that Harry is the heir of Slytherin and the heir of Gryffindor! This is why Harry is so special and talented. This also explains why the Sorting Hat had so much trouble distinguishing between whether Harry should go to Slytherin or Gryffindor as he was the heir of both!

This also means that Voldemort is Harry’s uncle! Voldemort is also Lily’s brother and Dudley’s uncle. J.K Rowling said in the last book a non-magical character will use magic to protect themselves. This is Dudley! Probably when he gets attacked at his house now that the protection has worn off from Dumbledore.

Think about it, there are so many reasons why Harry could be the heir of Slytherin and there is so may reasons why he can be the heir of Gryffindor. He is both

I’ve been very good about staying away from Harry Potter sites lately. I only came on here because I heard about this letter and I had to check it out! LOL. I will rstay spoiler free until I finish the book! There is a rule at my bookstore (actually mall, because there are several bookstores there) that no one is allowed to open the book until they exit the mall—they’re even upping security for it! I think my mall for that!

Only 3 more days! YAY!!!

i was spoiled also. i was told everything that i was wanting to read the book for. i wasn’t even looking for potter-related subjects. and as a fan i want to tell you to not read some of the comments on deviant art. i don’t care if you think i’m a nerd being too concerned. i just want to warn you that it’s spread on the site.

Would it be possible to disable all comments and posts on the site for maybe a week or two?

Right on Melissa! I spoiled the last book for myself when it fell out of my hands in my excitement to read it, and it fell on the floor and grandly opened to the very page where Snape kills Dumbledore. I could have killed myself.

I accidentally stumbled accross a long list of alleged spoilers on facebook and am so MAD!! I desparately wanted to stay “Harry Pure” and especially for the final book- I can’t believe it!!!!

Do you think they’re true?

I know about this “Gabriel” who supposedly took photogrpahs of every page I was reading that his book ended like 40 pages before the book is officially known to end (ie. its 50 pages too short) so I don’t think its real!!!

I want to be Harry Pure!!!!!!

Where do I report the idiot who posted a select number of deaths and pages they allegedly occurred at on Livejournal this evening?

PS: Everybody, but everybody, KNOWS that Umbridge marries Grawp, Neville marries Hermione, Harry marries Luna and Ron marries Tonks. Oh, and Snape marries Narcissa and Bellatrix marries Voldemort.

And Dumbledore? He marries Moaning Myrtle, of course!

And if any of those turns out to be true, I’ll eat my hat… :-)
