Several years ago we told you about a young Harry Potter fan by the name of Katie O’Brien who lost her battle against leukemia. Her longtime friends at Fiction Alley set up a memorial scholarship fund in her honor and applications for the 2007-2008 Katie O’Brien Scholarships for Writing, Art and Community Service are due May 31.
As a devoted Harry Potter fan fiction writer, her friends and family choose to remember Katie by offering this scholarship as a means “to help provide other writers, as well as artists and those who give back to the community, with some help in making their dreams come true.” Three $500 scholarships are awarded, thanks in part to the generous contributions of fans and through the purchase of wristbands. Avatar Image says: Hey Sue, I don't mean to nit-pick, but scholarships are 'awarded' They can be rewards, but they are awards. Avatar Image says: doh Quite right of course; typos suck, sorry about that.Avatar Image says: What an awesome thing to do! I'm so sorry for the loss of Katie, as I was at the time, but I'm so pleased to know that she now has a lasting legacy. For those of us who are beyond the scholarship application process, I think it would be great if we ordered wristbands to help out the fund! A truly uplifting and heartwarming story!Avatar Image says: How wonderful. What a terrific tribute!!!!Avatar Image says: I talked to her dad via email when the scholarship was created. He was so nice ... it was such a tragedy. I'm glad this will help other young writers :) Avatar Image says: Sigh. I wish I could go back in time and give her copies of all the books and movies. :(
