"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" Hacker Hoax

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Rumors have been floating around the internet today concerning a ‘hacker’ obtaining a digital copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows from a Bloomsbury computer and posting the alleged ending on the web. Reuters is reporting this evening that a Bloomsbury spokesperson ‘declined comment on the hacker’s claims,’ while Kyle Good, a spokesperson for US publishers Scholastic, is warning readers ‘to be skeptical about anything on the Web that claims to have inside information on the book’s plot’ saying:

“There is a whole lot of junk flying around,” she said. “Consider this one more theory.”

It is highly unlikely that any documents containing information as well protected as the seventh Harry Potter book would be on a Bloomsbury computer and as Trend Micro, a computer security company, spokesman David Perry was noted as saying:

“We’ve had hypes like this on the last couple of Harry Potter books… There is a very high level of spurious information in the hacker world.”

Folks, do not worry about any thing like this, the guy is a flat out liar and I do not need to read the damn thing know that. In order for you to be able to hack into a computer, you have to be able to find access to it somehow and these computers are inaccessible, they are flat out not connected to the net, phone lines, smoke signals or anything else for that matter, they are completely internal machines.

Now could of the kid have broken into the Bloomsbury computer that were connect to the net, sure that is possible, but all he would have found is what they considered low risk and I assure you the end of the last Harry Potter book is not considered low risk. He would have found PR statements, the guts to their web sites and such and that is about it, he would have never had a shot to get to Deathly Hollows, because those computer would not be connected to each other and only the very trusted people at Bloomsbury would have the ability to transfer any information back and forth between the machines.

It would literally be like needing to put a floppy disc in a floppy drive, saving the information to that disc, pulling the floppy disc out of the drive, getting up, walking out of the room, going to another room, putting the floppy disc into a floppy drive of a computer connected to the net and saving it to the hard drive there, it did not happen. These guys make way to much money to pull stunts like that.

As for why Bloomsbury has not out right denied this yet and probably won’t, that one is simple, it is a PR ploy. You may think that these books have gotten enough publicity, but Bloomsbury will never think that and this kind is all free, and they will milk that kind as much as they can.

I still would not recommend you reading it, the chump still might have guest some things right and if he did and you read it, he has succeeded in what he started out to do, ruining part of the book for you. Just leave this punk and is BS be and hope the cops catch him.

One would think that a person in possession of the sort of considerable intellect required for a life of hackerdom, the guy/girl would be capable of writing sentences beyond the second grade level. What a donkey.

The publishers are unlikely to have it on a networked computer. Any pirated versions digital or otherwise are likely only after release dates and announced prominently by media looking for a scoop. Those who don’t intend to pay well YOU ARE CONDEMNED TO WAIT ATLEAST TILL 23rd July

this really sounds like something right frm the heart of rita skeeter….....far fetched idea of preventing people frm reading HPDH. Nothing in the world can stop me going and getting my copy of JKR’s HPDH…for sure.

I’d have to say this sounds a little more than dodgy. It’s utterly ridiculous.

First of all, I’m certain Bloomsbury is aware of the existence of hackers, and is therefore taking care to keep all aspects of the actual manuscript protected. In fact, if I had to guess (based upon the kinds of security we know about regarding the actual printed books) I’d say the digital work is locked up at least at tight as most nuclear secrets – and you don’t see explicit directions for refining plutonium on the web!

Second, English being his native language or no, if this idiot really did read Deathly Hallows, wouldn’t he at least be able to mete out those few sentences with a modicum of grammatical and spelling propriety? As horrible as his English is, I’d be surprised if he were able to comprehend what he was reading even if he did get access to the real thing.

Finally, as a fan who has read these books about a dozen times, I say NO WAY that’s what happens. If more than three words of it are true, I’ll eat my pointed Harry Potter hat.

Just read the note by the supposed hacker . To me it looks like its his/her theory based on one of jkr’s interview about the trio. We know the author is not known to reveal any ending details so its safe to assume the hacker did not manage the hack

Come on! There’s no way this could be true. If it is, then Rowling had a friend write this last installment of Harry Potter. I guess she should have picked a friend who had actually read the other 6 books so they would have had an idea what the actual plot was about. Any one of us could have done SO MUCH BETTER! Talk about not having any immagination. The only spoiler here is how LAME the spoiler is. As if.

Yeah, thats so true! If it is the real transcript…How bad would JK feel. She says its her best book yet, and here we are sayin the end is that of a 9 yr old! I dont want to believe its true, because bloomsbury would have it so highly protected…but you just cant help but wonder…

Everyone watch out, dont read it! This one actually might be true. No official word yet from Bloomsbury on wether it is or isnt the real thing… very strange, ... veery strange.

Well I read those supposed spoiler, and they are a couple of things I gotta say.

First of all this guy seems to think he can make reading DH useless and boring if he spoils it for us, which shows he obviously doesn’t know anything about HP fandom. He doesn’t seem to realize that no number of spoilers can take the fun away from the book. They may reduce the fun, but they can’t kill it

He justifies himself by saying he followed Pope Benedict’s words. I’m sure that although Pope Benedict dissaproves of Harry Potter, he would be far more disapproving of hacking, something that is both dishonest and illegal in order to spread his message.

Finally he ends his message by saying God bless you. We all hope that god does bless us. But if this chap is looking out for his blessings, he may want to rethink over some aspects of his life.

Gods, this was totally lame. As soon as I saw that they has misinterpreted Rowling’s statements, I knew they didn’t know anything, and, sure enough, they didn’t. Everyone who says “two characters die in book 7, because Rowling said so, and we know who they are” probably never read her interviews thoroughly in the first place. It was only when she spoke about the last chapter, she said that “two characters die that she did not intend to die, and one character got a reprieve”. Which is an entirely different matter; who said that only two characters die in Book 7, anyway? There can be six or seven, for what we know.

Firstly, if Bloomsbury are in a position where they can be hacked in this way over something this important, then they really need to do a lot of work on their computer security (and take obvious precautions like encrypting files or not putting them on computers attached to the internet in the first place). But I wouldn’t read too much into Bloomsbury’s lack of comment on this, as it is simpler not to comment on anything, because if they consistently deny the fake leaks then they have real problems if a leak occurs that isn’t fake.
