Rotten Tomatoes UK recently caught up with Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron and spoke to him about his feelings on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and asked the director if he had any interest in returning to direct the film of the last Harry Potter book. Saying he has just begun reading “Deathly Hallows”, Alfonso Cuaron gave the following answer about his feelings if he were to be offered a directing position for the film adaptation of the book:
“You know, it was such a great opportunity and such a beautiful two years and everything around Harry Potter – JK Rowling’s creation – is enveloped in this really beneficial energy. I got the benefits of that energy for those two years. So yes I’d be very tempted to do so even though, at this point, I feel a little bit like I have to try to do the films that are not going to exist without me. On the same token, I would be really tempted because it was really beautiful. I just started reading the last book and something I respect is the care the producers have put in the film franchise. It would have been so easy after the success of the series just to take the cynical approach of knowing that no matter what people are going to see those movies. Actually they’ve been taking a lot of care from beginning to end, so yeah I would be really tempted.”
Seriously people, much as I despise what he did to POA. (since we appeared to be agreed not to mention shrunken heads that channel Jar Jar Binks, bird killing trees Mini-me Hitler Flitwicks, Hair from Behind Hermione, hairless werewolves, matted Cruckshanks, dirty Dumbledore fingernails and such so I won’t mention those) and much as he irritates me I am amazed he gave it a week! Seriously, when itcomes to attention getting, the man is the Arnold Horshack of the Harry Potter world….”OH OHOO…Mr Kotter/Potter..OH Oh OH”
He is using the release of Deathly Hallowsd to get attention and publicity and right off to attach his name to Deathly Hallows. As brilliant and artistic as he might be (and I personally put a lot of stress on the “might”) right now he is positioning as he did a few months ago when he was after HBP. He knows this is his last shot and he doesn’t have much going form him now. You will note now how TOTALLY useless his big hints about secret conversations with Jo about graveyards were. If it was true it was absolutely nothing but it got him noticed and talked about in the Potterverse. That is all this is, trying to hype up his job application. If we are lucky it wont work this time any better than it did for GOF, OTP or HBP , the ride will get too boompy, they will pick somebody really good (i.e. not him) and he will hush.
And if you read closely all the talk about beautiful flowing energy and temptation was BEFORE he even finished reading the book (“I just started reading the last book…”) Of course he may be doing a read-along with Michael Gambon so that could take some time…;0)
oh!please go ahead .i think with a mixed combination of mr cauron’s imaginative and ever so delightful moviemaking skills and john williams composition for the score,dh movie will create an epic
I REALLY hope he directs the last film! It’d be even better if he directed the last TWO films. PoA was my absolute favorite of all five. His style would be perfect for DH! I just hope they never let Yates near another HP film. Ever.
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! He ruined PoA and I will NEVER forgive him!! He took out the whole Marauders sceane, added weird stupid sceans like birds hitting trees and annoying mexiacan heads and the end scean was just STUPID. If he directs PoA it will automatically be trash. I know that’s harsh but it’s true…he butchered a 317pg book imagine what he would do to a 608pg book. Get someone like James Cmeron or Peter Jackson, then we’d have a masterpeice!
Even though I know it wont happen, (I think David Heyman would like to find another director for the seventh) Alfonso Caron made a very intersting film, no matter how you look at it. You either hate it or love it, and Im kinda in the middle.
Shrunken Heads…Whomping Willow…Cheesey Freeze Frame at the end.
No Thanks!
There’s no doubt that he can handle the dark elements of DH, but will it come at the cost of the emotional context? He added a lot of (annoying) elements to PoA that wasn’t in the book when I would have rather seen money and time it spent on things that were more relevent to the text. I watch PoA the least of all the films.
I personally loved how cleverly Yates incorporated (minor) relevent elements in OotP. They were done in such a subtle fashion which made it more amusing to me.
NOOOOOOOOOO!!! Any of them but him! I personally want Yates to stay on for DH too. But then again that depends on if he does HBP justice too. But either way any of the director but Cuaron!!
I don’t think that James Cameron would be good for HP at all. He directed the Terminator and T2 well, but (I may be in the minority film) I can’t stand Titanic! It has got to be one of the most overrated films ever! I only like the special effects! And Tim Burton, though he is a good director, wouldn’t be right either. I have a feeling that he would totally change some things, and he’d make it feel too cartoonishly spooky, if you know what I mean. I doubt he would want to direct anyway, since he probably would have wanted to be the director of the previous films.
Anyway, however bad you think a HP film may be, people, how does it “ruin” the book it is based on? Goodness, people, I agree that the Shrunken Head was really annoying, but goodness. I love the film PoA, and although I don’t like some bits of it, it certainly doesn’t “ruin” the book for me. In fact, it makes me like the book even more! w/e, I think that Cuaron would be great for DH, but there could be someone better out there.
No, No, Nooooooo!!!! PLEASE don’t let him touch Deathly Hallows, Warner Bros. There were some things that he did well (the Time Turner sequence), but there were things he totally ruined—Shrieking Shack scene was only right because the actors were good, but the importance of it was missing, not to mention the Marauder’s Map explanation and that stupid freeze frame ending, with just the feather with the broomstick. It rendered that story line ineffectual, while it was an important part of understanding the characters in the book.
I’m quite surprised and pleased that Yates was able to get the importance of Harry’s relationship with Sirius in OP, as it was not dealt with well enough in POA or GOF.
No more Cuaron—he’s too fascinated with shrunken heads and the Knight Bus to get all the things that happen in Deathly Hallows.
I agree with HPNana—Yates captured the essence of Order of the Phoenix, another of my favorite books. If Yates does well with Half-Blood Prince, why not let him have a go at Deathly Hallows, if he is willing. Some consistency with the end of the series might be a good thing about now, don’t you think? Besides, other than Chris Columbus, I think Yates seems to be the only director who really understands the books for themselves without just seeing an opportunity to do something to “make it their own”.
Excuse me, to all those saying he did the worst jon on PoA, no offence, but ARE YOU CRAZY?!!!!! The small, itty bitty problems like the Shrunken Heads (they weren’t even in the film for more than two minutes!!!!) are of no significance when you compare them to the beautiful movie that was PoA. Best HP movie after OotP, IMO. And he was the best director in the HP series. If I had to pick anyone to do HP7, it’s be either Cuaron or Yates or Peter Jackson. They’ll do it justice.
If Cuaron directs DH we can expect:
(1)Important plot points left out.
(2)A complete disregard for series continuity.
(3) Lots of arty shots that have nothing to do with the story.
(4)Awful action scenes.
No way I do not want he to mess up another Harry Potter movie. Please get Peter Jackson to make the last two movies he will do a really good job.
