Thanks Kiara for the support and the additional info. I agree that Dan carried the whole brunt of the promotion on his very young shoulders and he’s not even the main character in December BOys. I cannot totally blame WI cause the boxoffice gross so far is not totally bad. LIke HP, it did better abroad than in the US. (WB seems to be targeting the worldwide market more than the domestic market.) I would blame that director who advised Dan to do an ensemble movie for his first project out of HP. The people are expecting that DB will be Dan’s movie but Misty’s role there is bigger than Dan’s. They also expected and edgy, intense movie as per Dan’s other non HP role in the controversial Equus but the result is a symbol full movie that borders on oversentimental.

“in it’s 3rd week WB has only got 3 cinemas ending with $86,000”

So its true. I did not know it only have 3 cinemas left in 3rd week? So do this mean its only 3 weeks in play in UK? I think Rupert movie play 2 and half month in UK but stop only because its play in TV in December.

“Another thing that doesn’t help DB is that the main page of WI does not give the fans a link of the cinemas or theater where this movie is playing, compare to Sony that posted the cinemas where DL was going to be play every weekend.”

No I always go to DB website. The problems is they list citys in advance in expectation of expanding but they pulled out so the website list is wrong now. I dont tink they update.

This whole discussion as to who is better, Dan or Rupert (or Emma) really kills me. The fact is that all three of them do a great job in the Harry Potter movies (I mean, really, can you imagine anyone else taking on Harry, Ron and Hermione?); I’m sure none of them have reached their potential in actng (they are all so young) but they have a long history of great British acting to follow and I’m sure all 3 will do great work if that is what they so desire. In terms of individual projects – I’m sure some will succeed and others won’t – and none will probably match the tremendous earning power of the Harry Potter franchise – most movies will never match that. And to blame the flop of a movie on one person’s shoulders (either Driving Lessons or December Boys – and how does one define flop anyway) seems unfair to me as there are a lot of people involved in the making of even an indie film.

Finally, while we all have our personal favorites amongst the trio, what I really enjoy about them is the strong friendship they seem to share as evidenced by all the interviews and award shows we’ve seen them this past year. It’s too bad some of their fans can’t just let the pettiness rest.

Until I started being really interested in the actors of this franchise, I never knew that such rediculious rivalry could go on between fans of actors in a franchise set of films.I find this SO totally absurd for fans of one actor to constantly be belittling another actor on these films.I guess the fact that the fan of said actor who is not getting attention that their fans thinks they[the ‘actor’ ] deserves, which—in their eyes—confirms their reason for being thier fan ,they feel the need to lash out at the other actors, who have done nothing to cause the rivalry themselves and do not deserve the hate that is aimed at them. Part of this hate is just jealousy that their particular actor in not getting what they think they should and partly it is the ‘sour grapes’ of all kinds of people from the venom they need to spit because they themselves would love to be involved in the films themselves that these the actors are in an resent the actors for what they have—no matter which actor it is. The young actors ,themselves are very good friends, and would probubly find all this bickering between fans(? ,as some are not fans of any of them but just need to lash out at someone) about them totally meaningless. It just gets so absurdly -funny at times to read so much rediculious hate that pours off a website that backs a series of books that promote ‘love’ and ‘friendship’ so well .Appaarently , JKR hasn’t gotten though to some people with the meaning in her books and with their closed minds ,never will. [ there are ALL kinds of rewards ,not just monitary and physical ] successful lives and what is constantly said—in negative rivalry form—on any given wibsite will be of no importance to them or anyone. It certainly will not be for me as I will just enjoy the projects of which ever actor I choose and applaude their success of any kind they they choose to follow.Which I feel will become profound and beyond what was originally expected of them,’by some’.

When these film are complete Dan,Rupert and Emma will go on to live wonderful ,rewarding

No Kyle, WI has the list of the movies where DB is going to play but NOT the name of the CINEMAS, Sony HAD the name of the cinemas where DL was playing which is different, you can have a city as NY or LA listed as 2 place where DB is going to play, but LA and NY are HUGE place, so where exactly the movie is playing, THAT right there was the problem, I saw DL because when I went to the Sony site they had the name of the cinema in the next city I was living, but with DB they name only the city but not the cinema which does not help me at all.

And the list of cities is in the main site of WI:

Kyle, you just don’t stop do you? Are you sure that DL played for 2 and a half months in the UK? lol. Most indie films don’t stay that long on any city because the distributors have to pull out the film and show it in another city or country. They don’t reproduce many movie copies because of budget constraints. Only big budget movies have the stamina to stay long on a certain country or city but I don’t think they even stay for “2 and half month”. Even GOF went to the DVD after barely 4 months after its release. YOur worship of Rupert is clouding your judgment, my dear. Maybe you should look up the status of DL in boxofficemojo so you’ll have facts instead of just suppositions. Both films didn’t do very well in the UK although DB did slighly better than DL all around. YOu’re right that DB did very well in Australia but if it didn’t, I just know you’ll say something negative about that. lol

protegomuggleturn and becka I agree with both of you. protego.. you made a good point about Harry’s coldness as a character, and because Dan is quite different from Harry that makes what he does in the films quite challenging compared to Rupert. Becka I agree with you about Rupert in real life compared to films. I used to prefer Rupert but now I prefer Dan, I think partly because I see what he’s like in real life. But I also think that Dan has progressed as an actor whereas Rupert has not. Not Rupert’s fault. GOF was my turning point.

@ Ada, my husband, who is not a fan of any of the Trio or the HP films is just the opposite. He said quite out of the blue that Rupert WAS the best at first but now he thinks that Dan is, and that Dan is the only one who he thinks is a good actor (along with Tom Felton). Emma he has little opinion of because unfortunately he can’t see her beyond her eyebrows.

jasmine, radcakesfan – thanks for your intelligent comments about cinemas!

@ kyle, don’t even try to judge box office returns from the UK example! The UK is a BAD place to live if you like off-beat cinema! There is minimal distribution of small-scale indie, foreign and non-American films. IF you are lucky to live in a town with a non-mainstream cinema, which is rare in itself, you may get an indie film showing for ONE NIGHT only!

EVEN Hot Fuzz was shown in my home town for a grand total of TWO NIGHTS!!!! I’m not joking!

DB was shown for a week in about 25 London cinemas, some mainstream. This is huge for such a small and non-local film. Especially one that, to be frank and not to put the film down at all, is really not a story with much UK appeal. I don’t know where else it is being shown but I would be surprised at any showing at all outside London (Glasgow, Edinburgh??).

DL was UK-made(?), or set in the UK, so we should expect it to have more appeal to Uk audiences and be shown in more cinemas nationwide. I only caught it on TV. It should be a given that it beat DB at the boxoffice – apparently it didn’t.
