While casting news is scarce regarding the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, there many rumors swirling online about a new director of photography for the sixth Harry Potter film. Reports now claim that noted cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel will photograph ‘Half-Blood Prince,” which is set to begin filming in the next weeks. Bruno Delbonnel has twice been nominated for the Oscar award in Achievement in Cinematography for his work on “A Very Long Engagement,” and “Amelie,” with his most recent work seen in the upcoming distinctive looking film “Across the Universe.” If this rumor proves true, Mr. Delbonnel would be replacing acclaimed cinematographer Slawomir Idziak, who served as DOP on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. As always, please consider this still a rumor until Warner Brothers releases official cast and crew announcements for HBP.

Idziak’s vision was truly inspiring, but he already said in an interview he’s NOT coming back for HBP. The interview was from February and he sound quite certain.

Darius Khondji should do this. Since HBP is the darkest of all the seven, he should be taking up this. Se7en, shot by him remains his best work.

“A Very Long Engagement” is gorgeously shot and photographed, but that certain sepia tone and overall style would be inappropriate for HBP. I’m hoping, if Delbonnel is chosen, that HBP will look a little glossy like John Seale’s work on PS/SS but maintain the darker qualities Roger Pratt and Slawomir Idziak imbued for GOF and OOTP. Or if Delbonnel isn’t chosen, then Dariuz Wolski (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Crow) would be a great alternative.

I’m a massive film fan and I LOVE “Amelie,” and I can’t wait to see “Across the Universe.” This is really cool news.
