Happy Easter!

If you are Christian, it’s the day of Resurrection and chocolate eggs (and the mystery of how they are related); if you’re not, we hope you’re enjoying some of today’s sugarfest anyway.

Either way, if you’re bored, pop a marshmallow peep (picture in this post’s icon) into the microwave for 15 seconds and observe what happens. It’s fun for all faiths.

Thanks, Hedwig, for your best wishes.

I think you probably understand that if a site is run by (even nominal) Christians in America, it’s perfectly reasonable that the wishes expressed would be Christian (Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter) and American (Thanksgiving, 4th of July).

It would, I think, be a full-time job to keep up with the holy days of every one of the world’s religions and the significant days of every one of the world’s countries and to express them all in an appropriate way that would give no offense.

That said, I hope you had or are having a lovely day.

“the day of Resurrection and chocolate eggs (and the mystery of how they are related”

Because the colour of the chocolate eggs is the same colour as the wood of the cross?

Avatar Image says:

The celebration of Easter and the celebration of the resurrection of Christ are two seperate traditions that have merged together over the years. “Easter” is actually the festival of the goddess Eostre. According to the Venerable Bede (8th century AD), on the first day of spring, the sacred rabbit comes into the land and lays a sacred egg (no Cadbury didn’t make that up). Out of the sacred egg, Eostre, the goddess of spring is hatched and brings new life to the land. The celebration of the resurrection of Christ is…well… the celebration of the resurrection of Christ. The two celebrations became conflated when the western branch of Christianity affixed the date of the celebration of the resurrection on the first sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. This just so happened to coincide with the celebration of Easter. If you notice the Eastern branch of the Christian church celebrates “Easter” or “resurrection” day on April 27 this year. Anyway that’s how eggs and rabbits became connected to the resurrection of Christ.

Actually, the link between Easter and chocolate eggs isn’t that hard to fathom. There are two links:

1. Vitually all cultures have festivals celebrating the coming of Spring (when the threat of Winter ends and the flowers begin to bloom again). For Jews, this was Passover. Historically, Easter takes place at the same time as the Jewish Passover (the Last Supper was the Passover Seder). So, Easter also happens at the beginning of Spring. Spring festivals celebrate new life, and hence symbols of life and fertility are often used. Rabbits (very fertile), eggs (new life), flowers, etc., are used in most Spring Festivals, and these traditions of past cultures worked their way into the Christian Spring festival called Easter.
2. To put a slightly more Christian spin on it, Easter celebrates the resurrection of Christ, and hence rebirth and new life. That fits right in with the whole theme of Spring's rebirth, and hence the egg, which symbolizes new life, can also also, in its own way, be seen as a Christian symbol.
(Why chocolate eggs? The same reason there are chocolate frogs. Chocolate tastes better! ;)

Peep Jousting!!! I love it. I dont want to try it myself, ‘cause I dont want to waist a perfectly good Peep. I love Peeps, but they’re best when left out in the air for a bit, so they get a bit stiff. Yum! I’m on a total sugar hi from peeps and jelly beans and chocolate eggs!

Yay, Bethlahem PA and the home of the Peeps!!! I’m a tad south, near good ol’ King of Prussia, PA, home of the best mall ever!

Hope anyone who celebrates it had a Happy Easter, and for those who dont… I hope you had a lovely Sunday!

The link between chocolate eggs and jesus’ resurecction is simple. 1st of it is spring and chicks and bunnies represent spring. Also they represent new life. Jesus represents new life cuz he came back from the dea. there ya go!! Happy easter!!!Jesus is risen!!(spelling)

Easter, Holy Week, Resurrection, etc, Happy day everyone!

Avatar Image says:

Happy Easter everyone! I did much more than pop a peep in the microwave. My cousins and I have a tradition of burning any and every candy we can find. It’s the best. We burned peeps, jelly beans, chocolate, plastic grass from Easter baskets, tootsie rolls, and actually real eggs. It was awesome. (: Peeps work best in the microwave though, although there is something very satisfying about burning a peep with a piece of chocolate and a jelly bean in it. xD

Avatar Image says:

Happy Easter everyone. Thanks Leaky team for all the hard work fun. Eat lots of chocolate eggs but not too much to make you sick ;)

And yes, air73, it was snowing here in London this morning, freaky, not normal for this time of the year!

Avatar Image says:

AHAHAHAHA! Melissa’s Easter post makes my life!

Avatar Image says:

lol easter itself has pagan roots, its just another holiday that the church stamped their faith on to make it holy, because they knew they couldnt outlaw the festivals entirely. Almost everything about this holiday, is pagan. The only thing not, is the reason for celebrating it. Regardless of beginnings or ends it all seems to work out so that everyone can celebrate on their own terms, so happy ostara/easter indeed to all of all faiths! p.s.The rabbits and eggs symbolize fertility.

Avatar Image says:

Happy Easter everyone! My boyfriend surprised me with a Honeydukes tin of candy! ;D

Avatar Image says:

Happy Easter everyone!!

Hey hedwig, I’m not a practicing Christian myself, but a festival is a festival, for any religion, and ultimately, it’s a day of joy and celebration. I’m happy Leaky wishes everyone on festivals even if they are Chrisitans because it makes you feel nice to come here and see all the members celebrating and wishing each other! And this was a festive weekend anyway, I think for a lot of religions! So, joy to all!!

Avatar Image says:

Nice surprise Melissa!! :D

Avatar Image says:

Hey all, I vvish everyone a very happy Easter, im not online a lot anymore but i am here from time to time, everyone enjoy yourself,- and have a great holiday. Best vvishes Zannie

Avatar Image says:

I hope all of you have a wonderful Easter, but don’t forget those of you who are Christians it lasts the whole week and the Season for 50 days. Does that mean you have to make your eggs last, or you can just keep filling the basket? I am glad our team remember to keep these special times. Jo is a christian and—well do other religions have godfathers?

Avatar Image says:

It’s good to see that people from so many nationalities and religions like Harry Potter. It makes it even more clear what a wonderfull bookseries Jo Rowling has written. And it makes clear that we’re really not that different at all.

Avatar Image says:

Happy Easter to all!

The link between easter eggs and the Christian Easter festival is twofold:

1. The expanding Christian church incorporated paga festivals of fertility and spring traditionally celebrated at this time (hence the emphasis on eggs, chicks, lamb, and other symbols of spring), because these themes of new life after the “death” of winter dovetailed nicely with the Christian Easter themes of life/resurrection after death.

2. The hollow Easter eggs are a symbol of the hollow, empty tomb once Jesus had resurrected.

Hope that clarifies some of the confusion!

Avatar Image says:

Ha yeah i remember asking our R.E. teacher at school how they were linked and she quickly came up with some half assed story that the rock in front of Jesus’ tomb was shaped like an easter egg. It was hilarious. Personally I’m gonna with the South Park episode’s Da Vinci code/easter secret, hilarious!

Avatar Image says:

har har har, not for all Christians. i’m an Orthodox Christian and have five more weeks till our Easter because we’re on the lunar calendar.

Avatar Image says:

Easter, a time of rebirth, is exemplified by the egg, which of course is symbolic of birth/newness/life. “Chocolatizing” the symbol is a newer invention…..

Avatar Image says:

The eggs signify new life. Chocolate just tastes good.

Avatar Image says:

did not see the video but it sounds like somebody stuck glasses and icing scar onto a peep, and red eyes onto another with pretzal wands at their sides and put them in the microwave across from each other!!!
