Today, Amazon has announced a fantastic new contest that is sure to appeal to the serious Harry Potter fans. The online retailer has announced a new contest to win a trip for two to London, England for the weekend, where you will be able to read the special handwritten “The Tales of Beedle the Bard” by author J.K. Rowling. As readers will recall, the “Beedle the Bard” tales were mentioned Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with Amazon the winner of the charity auction of one of the seven hand written Beedle books by J.K. Rowling. Until now, only photos of the book and short summaries have been revealed.

To enter this contest which is open to people ages 13 years and older from 24 countries around the world, you “must creatively write a short, English-language submission of 100 or fewer words answering one of the following three questions:

* What songs do wizards use to celebrate birthdays?
* What other sports do wizards play besides Quidditch?
* What have you learned from the Harry Potter series that you use in everyday life?

You may enter here at Amazon (US) or Amazon (UK). The contest is open now until April 22, and according to the press release, is open “in two age categories: 13-17 and 18 and older. The contest is open to customers in 24 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China and Canada.

An Amazon committee will choose 10 semifinalists from each age group based on creativity and originality of idea as well as the writing style of the submission. On May 5, Amazon will post the semi-finalist submissions from both age groups and allow Amazon customers one week to vote for their favorite entry in each of the two age categories. The winner in each age group will move on to become one of two finalists who will compete for the grand prize.” In the final stage all will be able to vote for the winner, which will be announced on May 22.”

“Customers have been anxious to see, touch and read this rare, unique, and absolutely beautiful piece of literature’ said Russell Grandinetti, vice president of books at Amazon. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer our customers a chance to head to London, don a pair of white gloves and be one of only a handful of people in the world to have read these amazing tales. And of course, given the rarity of the book, security guards are included.” A reminder for those who have not yet seen the photos and summaries of the Beedle the Bard book, you may see them via this link. GOOD LUCK to all who enter!

Are freaking kidding me?!??! I’M ENTERING!.......

I’m so happy!!! lol thanks guys….. Even thought I’m not going to win hehehhehe :P

Avatar Image says:

OMG I so excited!!! lol I wonder if I’ll be even able to think of something creative enough!

Avatar Image says:

And the loosers are…............................................French spoken people!!!Because France and Quebec provinces are excludes. We can buy Harry Potter in English, we can read its but we can go to Amazon and read Beedle the Bard Tales OK!!

But we’re fair play people so good luck everyone

Avatar Image says:

Wow! This is a very cool contest. Time to put our creative thinking caps on. :)

Avatar Image says:

Oh! Can’t say much, gotta get writing! I have a very small chance of winning, but I might as well try!

Avatar Image says:

NO CROATIA! NO CROATIA! NO CROATIA! nooooooooo….....But I want to go! all those contests but never for Croatian people! I think I’ll cry… :(

Avatar Image says:

No Ecuador… ok, this is lame. I’m feeling you matea, It annoys me so much how some countries get excluded from these contests. Grrr.

Avatar Image says:

ohhhhh, I think I know who I would invite to come with me on this little adventure. Granted it’s not my best friend whom I usually would take, but she’s not an HP fan. So I guess if I really really want this I need to get to writing, now hmmmmmm what to write?

Avatar Image says:

come on! i’m 12! thats is so unfair! can’t we start at twelve instead of thirteen….

Avatar Image says:

Has anyone noticed that at the bottom of the page (UK one), there is a HP knock knock forum but no one has posted anything on it, so I posted the first one ;)

As for the contest, pretty cool but of course I dont stand a chance, unless I convince Amazon, that they dont need to spend money on a fight ticket, just a 90p bus fare :)

Avatar Image says:

Well, that would be FABULOUS, but I’m none too creative about those things. I guess I could give it a try. . .

And does that last “What have you learned from the Harry Potter series that you use in everyday life?” question reminds me (shudder) of those cliche college application essay questions. Only with Harry Potter, of course.

Avatar Image says:

I can’t think of another segment of society where people get so chuffed about a contest where the prize is that you get to read a book! Potter fans are just the coolest people on Earth! I hope that Amazon will publish the top ten entries in each category. I’d love to see what people come up with!

Avatar Image says:

Matea and Isabel, Don’t worry, these contest never include Poland too… We’re black holes on the map of the world, I suppose. ;)

Avatar Image says:

FINALLY….

Something ADULTS can enter!!!!!

I love kids, but it’s about freakin’ time the Adults get something :-)

Avatar Image says:

Why French can’t ? I’m upset. It’s unfair It’s the english, the english and again the english. Even malaisiens are allowed but no french !! Why ?? Is it a joke? Anyway good luck to everybody . You are VERY VERY lucky.

Avatar Image says:

I know. I feel lucky to have found a contest I can enter, and to have found it before the dead line.

Avatar Image says:

As someone else commented: finally, something for the adults!! I would enter but I can’t write for beans… W00t!!

Avatar Image says:

OMG! Finally there is a competition I can take part on:):):):) Finland rules!!

Avatar Image says:

First, I am sorry that such a contest is not open to everybody who wishes to enter. However, I hope that at least our Quebecois and Quebecoise friends do not blame Amazon, or the HP franchise. The fact is that almost EVERY contest known to humankind is not allowed in Quebec, because of certain laws regarding prizes, taxes and licensing. I don’t know if the same is true in France, but it may very well be.

Yes, it seems unfair, and as a Quebecois( at least by birth… je suis nee a Montreal), I’ve had my share of such contests for which I was ineligible. I am so glad, however, to see the wonderful attitude of the two of you, at least, in wishing everybody good luck. Truly an embodiment of the spirit of HP.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!! I’m really excited, please God let me win!!

Avatar Image says:

Finally, a Harry Potter contest I can enter at 28 years old!

Avatar Image says:

Ha.I can’t enter.Russia is not included in this list(( Anyway, good luck to all of you, guys))

Avatar Image says:

I’m so excited! None of my friends are HP fans though. :)

Avatar Image says:

who cares about them dryaid, invite me if you win!

Avatar Image says:

Nooo….ooooooooooooo i want to enter.why they exclude other countries where also live potter’s biggest fans. well best of luck to people who are entering.

Avatar Image says:

this is so awesome! totally entering this contest.. :D

Avatar Image says:

I’m definitely considering entering. It would be fantastic to see the book in person! Good luck to all who participate!

Avatar Image says:

bloody ‘ell!

Avatar Image says:

I so need to win.

Avatar Image says:

WHAT?? Why can’t people from Québec participate?? This is so unfair! I was all ready to post my thing and then…Canada (excluding Quebec)....I almost hit my head against the wall. It’s not like because our first language is French ( and excuse me but not all people living in the province of Quebec do speak french) that we can’t write or read in english!!

I think i’m gonna cry…

but anyways…i wish all the luck to the people who actually CAN participate!!! Good Luck!

Avatar Image says:

waittt.what is the birthday song?!

hahahaha

post number 2!

just to say that: i’m not blaming anyone…i’m just disappointed that once again we are unable to participate to such a great contest :-( But once again GOOD LUCK to everyone!!

Avatar Image says:

so are they asking us to write THE birthday song, or make up our own…??

Avatar Image says:

I’m disappointed that non-English citizens can’t enter (That’s very biased, and isn’t that one of the main subjects about the Harry Potter World? – acceptance) But at least this time, Adults can enter, so I’m going for it!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, a Leaky person better win this thing. I do love how we are all trying to get to spend a weekend with a book. But it isn’t just any book :p

Avatar Image says:

Awesome! I’m so glad there’s a contest catered so that older fans can enter! Hurrah! gets to work on her notes

I didn’t read anywhere where it said you could only have one entry. :)

Avatar Image says:

I have mine all written, and am just having it edited now. i doubt i’ll win though. in fact, miniscully tiny fraction of a chance at winning

Avatar Image says:

Im so entering!!!!

Avatar Image says:

QUESTION: is the a “correct answer” to the first 2 questions? we have to be creative about that right? b/c how else would they test our creativity? every one would get the same answers

Avatar Image says:

GWAHHHHH.

I’m planning in my head at the moment what to write.

But seriously, it sucks being 17. I’ll be 18 May 13th. Now I have to go convince my parents to be my Entrant thing.

asdjfalslj’ah

This is an amazing opportunity!!!

Avatar Image says:

Just entered lol….Spent ages on it too….What question are you guys choosing to answer on…

Avatar Image says:

OMG why couldn’t I be 13? Are you kidding me!! Sorry I just would LOVE to read the book so I’m very dissapointed…

Avatar Image says:

Im HORRIBLE at writing stuff…just ask my english teacher! o well i think im gunna try it out anyway! YAY!! like no chance whatsoever but i dont care!! lets get writing!!

Avatar Image says:

OMG OMG OMG I HAVE TO DO THIS!!!!!!! Good thing i want to be a writer, and took a creative writing class. maybeeee that will help meee…

Avatar Image says:

I wonder if they’ve go Argentina matea and isabel and isis (i think your name was) i feel ya. te siento. wish me luck!

Avatar Image says:

I’m so excited! I just submitted my entry. Really very difficult to write something spectacular in a 100 words or less. That’s actually awkwardly short. I had to keep rephrasing things until I had 99 words.

Avatar Image says:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! They forgot Poland!

Avatar Image says:

Sigh… there is no “correct answer” to the questions. Be creative.

Being creative in less than 100 words is a Herculean task.

From the FAQs: 3. How come kids younger than 13 cannot participate? The U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) severely limits the nature of online contests that Amazon is able to run, where children under the age of 13 are eligible to enter. In order to comply with the law and still hold a contest that would be easy to understand and simple to enter for our customers, we decided to set the lower age limit at 13.

4. How come only certain countries are eligible to enter? Some countries are legally ineligible for these types of contests. We conducted research to determine our list of more than 20 countries, and focused on those countries where there are large English-speaking populations and where laws would permit the contest.

I guess they want English-speakers because they don’t want to translate essays.

Avatar Image says:

And btw, I chose option 1 and described a song with a special spell in the lyrics.

And I am so glad that there’s an HP contest for adults! (I’m 19)

Avatar Image says:

Awesome competition Amazon. Good luck to everyone who enters and I’m looking forward to seeing the top ten entries!

Avatar Image says:

Thailand’s not there :( Well, I guess that’s expected, since nobody really speaks English here. Best of luck to everyone who enters! Show them the HP spirit! AND BRING BACK THOSE GLOVES!!!

Avatar Image says:

Does this mean that from the Asian continent, only people of Japan and China can enter? :(

Avatar Image says:

Spanish people can’t take part!!! T.T i will cry!! I’m very sad…I want to take part!! You’re very lucy…I’m a bit jealous…but , even well…GOOD LUCK to the participants!!

Avatar Image says:

I CANT WRITE JUST A HUNDRED WORDS!!!! SO MUCH TO SAY!!!! SO LITTLE WORDS!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

Exactly one hundred words! but I might rewrite… I did third question.

Avatar Image says:

yay! im so excitied im going to enter and get my friend to enter cuz when she wins she will take me!

Avatar Image says:

SO DIFFICULT!!!!! AGGH!!!

Avatar Image says:

I have read so many books about magic that my mom has to sometimes take my books away!

Avatar Image says:

Good luck, Maggie from Argentina! And have fun :)

Avatar Image says:

I defenitly just entered!!!!!! cross your fingers for me all of you who couldn’t enter!!

also, i think that the winner should be on PotterCast and tell all us non-lucky winners what the experience would like.

YOU HAVE TO DO IT!!

Avatar Image says:

OMG! This is amazing! I’m so doing this!

Avatar Image says:

I have to say this is very VERY cool! I am so entering! I have already started writing! I SO have to agree with Fair Ravenclaw Glenn!! Harry Potter fans, we freakin rock! I just thought of that as I read FRG’s post… we are just so excited that if we happen to win we can read a book. But after all, it is not JUST a book, it’s Beedle the Bard! Handwritten by Jo! Wow.. I’m over excited right now.. although I probably have no chance of winning, hey, it could happen!

Avatar Image says:

AAAHHH!!!! I’m totally going to enter…which question to do though? Hmm…This is sooo exciting!!!

Avatar Image says:

Yeah, the 100 words is a killer. I submitted a 99-word version, and kept a 170 word version for myself.

Avatar Image says:

Yes! Holland is included! :D

Avatar Image says:

YES ! Norway can enter :D Omg, Must start writing!

Avatar Image says:

Avatar Image says:

Avatar Image says:

I was abused as a child and always left-out, so I identified with vthe character of Harry Potter!!! As I read and read the books over and over, I have learned that the power of friends and the Love of them, can heal a broken heart. I grew-up to make everlasting love with my sibblings and before he died, I made a loving and caring relationship with my Father. In the books, Harry learns his parents had given their lives for him and Love protected him against Voldermant. He found he had friends that he could shrae joy and happiness with, and friends that would stand beside him and he for them, no matter what. I found the same as I grew-up and married and had a baby, and also never losing their love and support as well as my family. Harry found the very same things with Ron and Hermione and Hagrid, Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall and Nevle and the Weasley Family. He was alone no more and nor was I. Harry taught me well, and i’ll be forever grateful to his character and the story.Today, i’m open to love and care from othere and I know how to do it, too!!!!! My life is blessed!!!
