As many of you know, actor Dan Radcliffe is set to reprise his role in the play “Equus”, when the production begins here in the US this fall. Confirmed dates for the play have now been announced, with previews to begin on September 5, and the play to formally open on Broadway September 25th. The Broadhurst Theatre in New York City will be the site of the play, which is set for a limited 22 week run through February 8, 2009. According to Playbill, tickets will “go on sale to American Express Gold Card members April 12 at 9 AM ET by calling (212) 239-6200 or by visiting www.telecharge.com.”

As reported previously, Dan Radcliffe will be joined by Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon), who appeared with Dan in the hit London production of the play last year. Thea Sharrock, who directed the London production of the play, will assume directing duties for the play here on Broadway as well. You can see some photos of Dan in this play here in our galleries. A reminder that “Equus” is a very serious drama, dealing with a boy who undergoes therapy after blinding six horses. This play contains mature subject matter, with nudity and sexual themes in the play.

Oooh! I want to see Equus!

Hurray! I’m glad that this is following through with Richard Griffiths as the psychiatrist and Thea Sharrock directing. I had the opportunity to see it last year when it first came out. It’d be great to see it in NY, but i highly doubt i’m going to see it on Broadway. For those that get to go, enjoy it. Dan is just incredible, and Richard equally shows his amazing acting skills. Since i saw Equus, Richard has become one of my favorite actors. :)

But when can those of us who have no American Express card buy tickets? Equus has always been one of my favorite plays and with Dan in it and getting such great reviews… My birthday is in Oct. and I’ve been planning on taking myself to the show as my gift to myself. Now if only I could find out how to get a darn ticket!

Avatar Image says:

AHH! I have to see this, only a 3 hour drive away! I am buying tickets the second ticket-buying starts! :)

Avatar Image says:

I want to go see this play so bad. I live in Oregon, but my dad is willing to go see it to as a birthday present (9/19). I’ll be turning 20 and have wanted to see NY for years. All I need to know now is when people without American Express to a chance to buy one too. When?

Avatar Image says:

Do you think they’ll be an age limit??

Avatar Image says:

Do you think there will be an age limit??

Avatar Image says:

Aww, I want to see it. I looked up the story of “Equus” and it sounds really, really good. Too bad I will never be able to see it though. =(

Avatar Image says:

I’m confused – What about us non-American Express people… When do we buy tickets? Oh, please oh please, Leaky, let us know as soon as tickets really go on sale!

Avatar Image says:

Given that this is the US, I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s an age limit, presuming that the play is done as in the UK (IE, Dan’s naked). More interesting though, note the run dates. Now remember what ELSE comes out this fall/winter…yep, Half-Blood Prince! Dan’s going to be one busy guy, unless an understudy does some of the performances while Dan’s doing UK press junkets, or they’re scheduling around that.

Either way, he’s going to be very busy until the start of 2009…then depending on when Deathly Hallows starts filming, he might be going right into that. There’s also the opening of Universal’s Potter land, isn’t that in 2009 as well? I have to figure he’ll be part of that along with the others. He’ll probably be glad when the Potter movies are done, if only to get a vacation!

Avatar Image says:

Hm, I really hope they’re planning on letting people buy tickets with other credit cards too.

Avatar Image says:

thank you playbill.com! i may see it in november. i wanna see a preview but that is so close after terminus.

Avatar Image says:

Is there any chance that it will also be played/staged here in Toronto, Canada :~) Although NY is not that far from us here in Toronto, I would rather be watching it in the comfort of my own country. Furthermore, wondering, is there anyone from Toronto whose going to see it in Broadway, maybe we can arrange for a group tour and discount ,too :). But I’ll have to see it.

Avatar Image says:

Broadhurst theater… Anyone know what kind of theater it is?

And I’m kinda sad they didn’t get the rest of the cast. JOanna Christie was good as Jill in the West end production. Maybe they got NY actors. Probably part of the deal in Broadway.

Avatar Image says:

Hooray! I can’t wait to buy tickets

Avatar Image says:

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Dan is unable to complete the 22 weeks. I don’t see how it would be humanly possible to keep up the Broadway schedule and promote HBP, and I’m sure the WB contract would supercede any contract following it… Look for an announcement later “after” tickets have been sold…

Avatar Image says:

He can just do press junkets in the morning during November. Not that big a deal. There are people i the world who work 11 hours a day, you know.

Avatar Image says:

On the timing of the play’s run vis-a-vis the HBP premiere, Dan could probably take one 3-day weekend off to do the premiere and press junket thing. He’d probably fly first to London for the world premiere (and suitable talk show or two), then fly to LA for the US premiere (and Leno) and that’s it. And he can probably hang in New York while doing the play and doing promotions (including visiting Conan again) during mornings and his one day off each week.

What I’m more worried about is whether Dan should be going straight from doing a 22-week Broadway run to the set of the 7th moview for what will be an extended probably 12+ month shoot. I want him to be fresh and not exhausted by the time he starts filiming. I thought I heard that DH was supposed to start filming in February 2009, so it appears Dan won’t have a breather at all. Hopefully, WB/Yates can accommodate Dan’s hectic schedule and give him a few weeks (or a month) off - kind of like what they did for Emma Watson on HBP to accommodate her studies - and not have him start filming scenes until later (late March or April/May perhaps).

Avatar Image says:

....SQUEEEE!!!

if they don’t let me buy tickets with my visa, i’ll be a very unhappy person. its supposed to be everywhere i want to be…. and i want to be in the audience at equus!

Avatar Image says:

I am so happy to hear about this info because it means that it is getting closer. I wish they told us when the tickets go on sale to people that do not have an “American Express Gold Card” because I don’t have one. Maybe my parents have one. I can’t wait for Dan to come here because this is one of the few times that I might be able to see somebody connected to Harry Potter and to actually see them perform is just so cool.

Avatar Image says:

People should definitely go and see Equus, it’s a fantastic play and Daniel adn Richard are excellent in it. The reason the rest of the cast are unable to be in the Broadway production is to do with Union rules, and a lot of those that were in the London play are involved in other projects now. I’m sure the tickets will be available for other card holders soon enough as well, it may just be that Amex has a deal with the theatre company. You guys probably won’t get a chacne to see Dan in Equus ever again, so you may as well go while you have the opportunity. You won’t be disappointed.

Avatar Image says:

You won’t have to worry about Dan promoting HBP. That would have been put on the table, when they were discussing taking the play to Broadway. So he prob will have time off to do that. So if you’re going to see it, just don’t go while Dan is promoting HBP, he won’t be the one playing Alan ; )

Avatar Image says:

Radcliffe only did 16 weeks of the West End run and did not do the road show of EQUUS in the UK. Thus it is most likely his run here will be much shorter. I’m sure TLC will post when the general sales for the show open, and you might try contacting the theatre for further details.

Now, how am I going to get to NYC in the Fall? (starts saving knuts NOW)

Avatar Image says:

wow…..the play again!!but seriously..how is dan gonna do all those heavy HP promos tht comes with the film??all those premieres/press conf, press junkets, photocalls etc etc..am stumped…if he does them, wht abt his play?btw, how often will equus run a week? it says fr sept 25….but how many times?and ticket prices etc etc?age limit..whatever for….it’s a play of a now 19 yr old dan and….it’s theme is artistic nudity not porn..no age limit for those who wanna see it… btw,i spent half the play amazed at it..then i realized oh yeah..dan’s in it..lol..watch him!

Avatar Image says:

When he’s promoting the play, HBP will come up. There, that’s one way he’ll do his promotional duties. WB knows very well that it can ride (pun intended) on this play and get some free HP promotion.

Don’t worry – no one will miss the fact that he has the play and a movie coming out around the same time. The question is, how many of the shows will he miss doing his Potter duties. Should be fun, though, watching him mix that wide-eyed Potter promotion with the scuffy Alan Strang thing….

I’m amazed at his nuclear-powered energy level…but then again, he is 18/19 and should be full of energy!

Break a leg, Dan!

Avatar Image says:

Oh, and Hagiographer, the run is six weeks longer than the West End production. Should be 8 shows a week, too.

Oy, Dan – pass a little of that energy around, will ya!

Avatar Image says:

I want to know the days he will miss before I get my tickets. DAn can do some promos from NY but he will have to miss some to be in London and LA and where ever else he will go for HBP. I just don’t want to buy a ticket and flight and then Dan not be there. Oh and I believe I heard a Broadway actor once say the do 8 shows a week usually with the leads getting one of those shows off a week. They really work their behinds off. I have a feeling it will be hard for them to sell tickets in NOV. if they do not release the times Dan will not be there for travel promos for HBP. I

Avatar Image says:

hagiographer13 – Dan didn’t “only do 16 weeks” in the London production, that was the whole length of the production, and he did every show (8 performances a week), the touring version is a completely different production and Dan was filming HBP and My Boy Jack, which is why he didn’t do the tour, plus touring versions are always less worth seeing.

Dan doesn’t necessarily have to take much time off from the NY performances, the most he would miss would be 2 or 3 performances, and it would be quite easy to estimate when these days are likely to be by seeing when the premieres are usually held (usually the week preceding the release date). So if fans really only want to see Equus for Dan then they just shouldn’t book for that particular week or so. And when it comes to the press jucket, I think it will be similar to Ootp, that they will do a press conference, therefore allowing a lot of journalists to interview them all at the same time.

People are worrying too much about this, it wouldn’t be happening if everything hadn’t been meticulously planned out.

Avatar Image says:

NYC here we come. Will probably go in Oct. I am still concerned that Dan may miss a lot of days in Nov due to HBP premiers. And we want them to get the bugs out before we see it.

Avatar Image says:

I’ll be finishing up my run on Broadway the same week they start rehearsals. Maybe I should send him a ticket!

I saw him in London last year and he did a great job in the role. I was a bit disappointed with Griffiths though.

Avatar Image says:

Thanks for theses questions. Viz a Viz , premiers for HBP. I thought the weekend thing might work for Dan too. I’m intending to catch it in London. Yes indeed. How do us non American Express Gold card members pay our ticket? intend to phone, phone, phone and find out,. I’m sure they will open everything up to general booking in good time. I will be heading down from Toronto too. The person who asked about it showing in Toronto. Call up the Mirvish family. They bring in some good shows. David Mirvish has taken over the theater scene from his famous father Ed Mirvish. Wouldn’t that be interesting if we could get it north of the border. Let’s hope our questions will be answered by our very competent wen sites. The best everyone. And good luck. Val Honey. Canada.

Avatar Image says:

ahh it starts 3 days after my birthday!!

Avatar Image says:

people with other cards will be able to purchase them, but Amex has a special deal with many theatres in NY (and elsewhere) that their cardholders get special pre-sale privileges. (Visa is hooked up with some other theatres, unfortunately not this one, or I’d jump on those tix!) Also, I doubt they’ll have the same age restrictions as, say movie theatres do, but they may not admit children under a certain age certainly not without a guardian, and parents will be strongly discouraged from bringing them in the first place. There’s been so much hub-bub about this play, I can’t imagine anyone who has any sense of what’s going on in the world to not know what the play is about. It’s a fascinating play, even if the psychological theories discussed in it are a bit outdated. Really, girls, seeing Dan starkers should be like, the fifth or sixth reason to see it, not the primary.

Avatar Image says:

ps- I’ve read that the prices are astronomical. Save yer pennies and pay back your folks if they let you go. It’s only fair.

Avatar Image says:

TICKETS WILL GO ON SALE FOR THE “GENERAL PUBLICON APRIL 25TH

Avatar Image says:

I’M SORRY IT’S ACTUALLY APRIL 26TH.

Avatar Image says:

Am i the only one who seems surpised that those pics from Equus are in the galleries???

Avatar Image says:

Since he is going to show off his entire birthday suit, does this mean we can now call him “Harry Botty”? As for the Broadhurst Theatre, it was built in 1918, and was named for a British writer/director from the turn of the century. It premiered, among others, one of Peter Shaffer’s other works, “Amadeus”, and a rare Andrew Lloyd-Webber flop, “Aspects of Love”. I’ve never been inside the Broadhurst, but many of the older theatres were built to have excellent sight lines, which translates to not a bad seat in the house. So here’s an early welcome to Fun City, Dan!

PS There will probably be an age restriction, so you may want to check first before coming to New York to see Dan’s “patesco posteri”!

Avatar Image says:

I know I’m posting late, but I went to the linked page (Broadway.com). Did anyone besides me notice that the name listed under the picture is DAVID Radcliffe? Gee, I didn’t know Daniel had a twin! Maybe he (David, the twin) could fill in while Daniel does the press for HBP! ; )

Avatar Image says:

According to the telecharge website: http://www.telecharge.com/BehindTheCurtain.aspx?prodid=6492

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on April 26.

Avatar Image says:

You know what I’m really excited about aside from seeing Equus on Broadway? It’s to see Dan Radcliffe do the HBP promotional tour with that semi beard. lol. He has always been clean and preppy while on these HP promotions. All clean and sophisitcated in his snapy suits.. This time, Dan will be running around the world with that beard on his face. ought to be sexy…

Avatar Image says:

Can anyone familiar with the Broadhurst Theater tell me what the difference is between ‘Premium Seating’ and ‘Orchestra Seating’? Besides the price? LOL

Thanks and sorry for being such a noob! :)

Avatar Image says:

Don’t fret – tickets to the General Public go on sale April 25th and can be purchased through Telecharge @ Pricing: $61.50 – $116.50 Box Office: Telecharge: (212) 239-6200/(800) 432-7250 or www.telecharge.com.

Christine. There is no age limit however, it may be inappropriate for 16 and under due to the Nudity and subject matter. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre. But who in their right minds would take a <4 to the theatre? :)

Good luck ticket seekers! See you in NYC

Avatar Image says:

I am a bit worried about the hectic schedule too. I know Dan is quite capable of doing the 22 weeks, but still he is young and a schedule like that is very very enduring. I really hope he gets considerations for rest time. I really do not want him to burn out himself too much, not just because he will be filming the 7th movie but humanly wise I think it can be a health hazard. I hope his publicist and family advises him seriously on this matter.

And I also pray that he has a health diet and essential vitamins to sustain him during these hectic periods.

Take care of yourself Dan you are precious and highly favoured. God Bless you.
