May 2nd marks the ten year anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts which took place in the final chapters of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” On that night, wizards took up arms together to fight against the Dark Lord resulting in many brave souls being lost during that battle. To honor these fallen heros, our May contest asks you to write a eulogy of up to 50 words about the Harry Potter character of your choice. A eulogy offers high praise to honor a person who is no longer with us. Your submission need not be limited to those characters who died during the Battle of Hogwarts, but any character who was killed at any point during the series.

Your work may be in any form, including poem, speech, or prose. Anyone over the age of 13 not involved in the judging process may submit one original work to [email protected] by May 25, 2008 at 11:59 p.m. EDT with “Fallen Heroes” in the subject line of the e-mail. Full details and information can be found right here.

Good luck to all who enter!

Avatar Image says:

Great anniversary: ten years of victory on Voldemort and all that is hate!

Avatar Image says:

That brings back sad memories! =( I have never felt so depressed in my life, like I did after finishing DH.

Avatar Image says:

succes with the great contest guys. let us remember every character that was brave enough to join in this immense battle.

Slightly related topic: Isn’t it Victoire’s bday today?

Avatar Image says:

I’m getting goosebumps reading this! That was one intense chapter and and book.

Avatar Image says:

wow, 10 years have passed already? wow…

Avatar Image says:

Happy Anniversary and happy birthday Victoire Weasley

Avatar Image says:

wow. that’s depressing.

Avatar Image says:

how do you know thats been ten years? 10 YEARS???

Avatar Image says:

10 years… thats so sad!!!

Thank you Fred, Tonks, Lupin, Colin…

You’ll be always in our heart!!!!

Avatar Image says:

Grrr, my beloved Riddle lies moldering in his grave thanks to The Boy. >:(

Long live the Dark Lord! (hehehe) xD

...J/k, yay Harry! :)

Avatar Image says:

It was May 2nd? I completely didn’t realise. Black armband time. Colin

Avatar Image says:

hey, i’m curious… how do we know that took place on the 2nd of may?

Avatar Image says:

Well you could go through the book and follow mentioned dates and extrapolate from that.

OR you could just take Jo’s word for it as she said it in the “Year in the Life” documentary as she drew out the family tree diagram… that Victoire was born on the first anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, “which is May 2nd …”

Avatar Image says:

R.I.P. Fred, Lupin, Tonks, and Snape. We still remember you “ten” years later.

P.S.: Joyeux Anniversaire, Victoire!

Avatar Image says:

So sad :(

(happy birthday Victoire Weasley)

Avatar Image says:

it has got to be fred weasley. Big up to the weasleys :L haha. looove it

Avatar Image says:

You can deduce the date because I think Harry says (don’t have the book at hand at the moment) on the day of breaking into Gringotts that May started etc etc. So the battle was on the second of May, the day after Gringotts. I looked it up when Jo said that and that’s how you can deduce the date. Before that they were several weeks at Bill and Fleurs, but you can’t get a date out of that untill Harry makes that comment.

I didn’t realise the anniversary when I saw the headline but then I remembered. It is said, and we can take a moment of silence for all the fallen heroes…

Oh and of course Happy Birthday Victoire

The 2nd May quote is in one of the preview clips as well as the full ITV documentary, and is in the Galleries at http://video.the-leaky-cauldron.org/video/958 There is also a phrase saying something like “Now it was May” from the early morning before the Gringotts raid, which can be read as meaning it was the first of the month which would mean that, as the battle started at midnight, so it would have taken place in the early hours of 2nd May.

Avatar Image says:

@Ravenclaw from Glenn,

thanks!

Avatar Image says:

wow i remembered when i finished DH i felt so sad and felt like a big whole in my life was missing

Avatar Image says:

I’m finding this contest to be a bit lacking, not in the idea category far from it but in it’s guidelines. A 50-word piece is hardly enough to write a proper eulogy to a character/s we love. Even the April contest requested a 150-word entry when a poem is usually much shorter then a eulogy. 50 words just aren’t enough to write something proper. Maybe just up it to 100 words. I have an idea but I can already see it will be much longer then 50 words.

WE MISS YOU ALL

Avatar Image says:

so 9 years from now 2017 is when the epilogue will take place

Avatar Image says:

Well, that’s an odd coincidence…I’ve just gotten to the Gringotts chapter in my re-read of DH today, and was hoping to find some time tonight to get through the Battle of Hogwarts. I will DEFINITELY make the time now I know this is the anniversary. tears

Avatar Image says:

wird today is also my little sis’s bday!!!Thats two things to celebrate!!!!!Go harry!!!!

luv-lily

Avatar Image says:

isn’t it 19 years later like the epilogue (but i think im wrong and just not thinking)

Avatar Image says:

ive just finished rereading the whole series for the third time what a sad day.rip to my favs fred tonks and of course LUPIN!!! happy bday victorie rereading only helps missing it a little. wish there was more.

Avatar Image says:

Thats funny, I just finished re-reading DH again today. Great read, shame its over though.

Avatar Image says:

Dont forget poor Colin who was the only underaged fallen hero who obviously had wanted to fight for Hogwarths and bravely and sneakily stayed back despite being told to go with the other children through the secret passage to Aberforth. I felt my my heart pierce (it happened several moments in this book!) when I read him being brought out amongst the dead.

Avatar Image says:

I cry and cry over that I miss thought chater some much

Avatar Image says:

We will always remember my beloved Snape…:(

Avatar Image says:

And of course, JOYEUX ANNIVERSAIRE, VICTOIRE!! (^)

Avatar Image says:

Wow! 10 years!!! I’ve been counting down to this day! Happy 8th Birthday to Victoire Weasley too!!!

Avatar Image says:

Avatar Image says:

aw. this would have to be the greatest//saddest//most amazing day in Harry Potter history. We should try to get this to be a holiday :).

Rest In Peace all of the Greatest Fallen Heroes of all time! [Tonks, Remus, Collin, Fred and so man more!]

this honestly makes me want to cry!

HP FOREVER!

Jo states it is the date in the documentary done on the last year she was writing Deathly Hallows. She also writes up a nice family tree of the Weasleys which states very clearly (still available for viewing on her site) that Fred dies in 1997….which, I think makes this year the 11th anniversary. ?

: )

I haven’t read through all the comments…I could totally be saying something we already know!

Avatar Image says:

ocm – most people forget that while the 7th book starts in ‘97, the new year still happens. the battle was May 2nd, 1998.

I had the worst day ever today, and I cam home and remembered, and almost started crying. I’m such a nerd…. Off to work on my poem! <3

Avatar Image says:

RIP Hedwig and Dobby.

Avatar Image says:

Fred, Lupin, Tonks, Snape and even Colin Creevey… I was so sad when they died, I wish I could do a eulogy for all of them! I can’t choose! I will still remember them…always. R.I.P. I happen to have a shrine in my room to the characters who died, mostly made of NECA figures or Gentle Giant busts of the characters. Which two should I do? Well, Fred, definately, but for the other one, should I do Lupin, Snape, or Tonks?

Avatar Image says:

Ode to the Fallen

This is one I do for you. And other can copy

I write this down for not the living But for the departing.

Fred you were so young. Colin you were even younger

For Tonks and Lupin what about Teddy Your son you are departing.

We know that death will take us all. Later rather than sooner.

But to have you waiting for us to meet you Will be a grand of Death day Suiter.

Avatar Image says:

Only fifty words? Wow, my initial poem was over 300 words… took quite a job to cut that down, and now I’m stuck on 57 words, with no escape in sight.

Avatar Image says:

By the time Lord Voldemort fell, in the final battle, dawn was approaching, right? So, we can say that Voldemort died on May 3rd, isn’t it? If so, this is the BEST Birthday gift I can ever ask for!!!!

Then, May 3rd, represents the day when evil ended, and a great day for those who were born on this day ( Including myself! ), who wish to stay on the path of goodness, and banish those who are evil. Which also means that the heroes, who are lamented, sacrificed thier lives so that on the very next day, there will be an end to miseries, and Good and happiness shall prevail.

The heroes, Alastor Moody, Dobby, Fred Weasley, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Lupin (nee Tonks), Colin Creevy, deserve special places in our hearts, for their courage, and their sacrifice.

And therefore, both the days, May 2nd, and May 3rd, deserve to be special, as on these two very days, sacrifices and togetherness, respectively, bought the downfall of evil. I’m proud to be born on the day of togetherness, ie on 3rd May, and thanks to Jo, for making it special for me. :-)

‘Fallen Heroes, You Shall Not Be Forgotten.’

My most special person, whom I give my utmost respect and love, is SEVERUS SNAPE. If, it hadn’t for him, nothing would have been possible.

No body trusted him, no body but Dumbledore-
It was respect for him, that Snape had bore.
For love of Lily, reciding in his heart,
But for his master, that truly they part.
To this very day, you’ve been on the side of Good,
Playing your act, Framing your master, in your hood.
Never shall I forget you Snape, nor your courage bold—
For tales of your bravery, will 100 times in future, be told.
I Love You, Severus Snape, I Love You.

Long last ‘Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows’! & To all the fallen warriors, we’ll never forget you, nor would we want to… You’ll always be in are hearts!

Hedwig: You’ll always be one of my favorite characters, I’ll never forget you. Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody: A true warrior, eh? “Mad-Eye”, you were a great man. Rufus Scrimgeour: He didn’t give Harry away…You got to give him that, right? Dobby: Oh my goodness! I absolutely bawled when you died. I LOVE YOU DOBBY!!! Fred Weasley: Sigh I miss you Fred, I couldn’t believe that you actually died. I still feel like I want to break-down and cry when I think about it… Remus Lupin: After Hedwig, Dobby & Fred, I couldn’t take it anymore…I was in complete shock when I read about you laying next to Tonks in the Great Hall… You’re still one of my top three favorite characters, and I don’t think I’ll ever change my mind. LONG LIVE MOONY!!! Nymphadora Tonks: I loved Tonks. Like I said when talking about Lupin, I was in shock, I didn’t want to believe it…especially just after having Teddy… Colin Creevey: I loved Colin, too. I remember feeling a big jolt to the stomach when I read about him, being carried in by Neville and Wood… Severus Snape: I won’t lie…I hate Snape with a passion, however, He was, so brave & loyal, and I commend him for that. Harry Potter: Well, he did die! I had to say something about ‘The Boy Who Lived’...Again! Harry Potter would be #27, (That’s weird to think, eh?) I’m so happy that Harry lived, I think I would have had a heart attack if he REALLY DID die! Sigh Sorry, I didn’t mean to make this post so long…It just sorta happened! P.S. Joyeux Anniversaire, Victoire!

Avatar Image says:

ocm: Yes, I saw what J.K. Rowling wrote down too… But, forgive me, I think she made a mistake. Just yesterday I sat down & figured it out for myself: Lily & James Potter were born in 1960 & died in 1981, right? well, Harry was one when his parents died, right? that means he was born in 1980… So, start at 1980, it’ll work out. For instance: write down 1980, add #11 years (Harry’s first year at school) It’ll be September 1st, 1991, right? Then you have to think about the new year & when he leave for Holiday, so then it’ll be July 1st, 1992, right? Well, It’s a little confusing, but if you keep it goin’ for 7 years, it’ll work out to be 1998.

This would make an awesome fan art contest as well (maybe next year)!

Avatar Image says:

I’m sorry to be so dense (or mercenary), but what prize do we win for this contest? The admiration of our peers if our entry is selected, and posted on Leaky? Or do you have some cool WB/Alivan’s merchandise to gift us with as well?

Avatar Image says:

Cool competition. I only wish it were at least 100 rather than a 50w limit – I’m finding it immensely difficult!

Avatar Image says:

well, well, there is so many true hero’s in dh but to me snape has got to be the one who deserves to be remembered , before harry was even born snape was risking his own life to protect harry, and guess what, he did so the hero is professor snape god bless him

Avatar Image says:

i have read th dh over and over and there is a moment that haunts me is when hedwig is sad in her cage harry says she is angry becouse of the limit of flying she cant do becouse of the dursleys departing, i know why hedwig is sad becouse she knows she is about to die…......................................................................................................

Avatar Image says:

saoumitaa: No, the battle only took place on one day. There were preparations on the day of the Gringotts raid, but the battle didn’t start until midnight, so the Gringotts raid, the trip to Hogsmeade, and visit to the Ravenclaw common room all happened on 1st May, and the battle started at midnight on May 2nd, when Voldemort’s ultimatum ran out.
