Hang on everyone, as there is some rather big news tonight regarding that notecard that J.K. Rowling has written for a charity auction in June. MSNBC is reporting tonight that the note card is actually “an 800-word Harry Potter prequel.” The only other information on this new material regarding the beloved Harry Potter series is that “Rowling used both sides of her card to hand-write a prequel to her seven-book Harry Potter saga.”

The report goes on to say “Organizers refused to comment on the content of Rowling’s Harry Potter prequel, but Hogwarts fans hoping for another book to add to their collection may be disappointed by her signoff.

“From the prequel I am not working on ” but that was fun!” Rowling wrote.

Rowling has previously said she had no plans to write another Potter novel, but in December she sold a handwritten, leather-bound book of fairy tales she described as drawing on the series’ themes, for nearly $4 million at auction. The money went to The Children’s Voice, a charity Rowling co-founded in 2005.”

As a reminder, this card is part of a charity auction to be held at Waterstone’s Book seller in London, England June 10, proceeds to benefit English PEN and Dyslexia Action. As we reported previously, the card, along with ones from the 12 other authors who contributed to the charity auction, will be published in a book due on sale in August, with the cards also to be posted online JUNE 11, including this new Harry Potter prequel from J.K. Rowling. The Telegraph cites Gerry Johnson, the managing director of Waterstone’s as saying: “We never dreamed that JK Rowling would donate something so precious, and we’re incredibly grateful.” Fans unable to meet the bidding price for the prequel need not fret, however. The day after the auction, a facsimile of the story will be displayed in Waterstone’s branches and on its website. “

Update: Be sure to post your thoughts in this new poll here in our forum regarding what you hope for in this new prequel.

Note: Due to some unfortunate technical glitches, part of this article and none of the comments were showing when this was first posted. While this editor suspects Nargles, we do apologize for the inconvenience.

Excellent news!

Avatar Image says:

Hahaha Cute, tongue-in-cheek idea. I’d like to see it. :)

Avatar Image says:

wow

Avatar Image says:

Outstanding, I can’t wait. I wonder if you can buy it on line

Avatar Image says:

too bad we can’t actually have it…

Avatar Image says:

Awesome!

Avatar Image says:

I wish she released more of this to the public. It sounds really cool! JKR is always surprising us with something interesting! First?

Avatar Image says:

This is fabulous. :)

Avatar Image says:

I wish she released more of this to the public. It sounds really cool! JKR is always surprising us with something interesting! To bad there isn’t a long written prequel. The charity sounds like a worthy cause.

Avatar Image says:

Wow!! Let’s hope that whoever is lucky enough to buy that shares what’s written with us! At least a summery like Amazon….

Avatar Image says:

I just hope that the lucky winner of the auction is nice enough to share it with us like Amazon did with Beedle the Bard. Oh, to be really rich… =)

Avatar Image says:

I want that card NOW. :DDDDDDDDD

Avatar Image says:

I’d give anything for that card, too bad she wont write another book hopefully the prequel will be in the scottish book!!!

Avatar Image says:

Ooooh what type of prequel d’you think? The Marauders? The Dumbledores?

Avatar Image says:

From the article:

“Copies of the cards will be collated into a book to be made available at the bookstore and online in August.”

So we’ll eventually get to read it if we buy the book. Woot!

Avatar Image says:

I hope that this prequal is a rumor and not based on any truth. If it is to sell it to the highest bidder for charity is robbing all of her fans at yet another opportunity to enjoy her work. She could have made alot more money for charity if it was available to all of her customers to purchase. That is somewhat how I felt when she sold Beetle in the Bard. I wanted a copy for myself because her work was good. To make her work exclusive to only those that can afford it even if it is for charity purposes is robbing her fans who has help and supported her for all these years. It saddens not excites me.

Avatar Image says:

For some reason the last paragraph of this article didn’t show until I posted my comment. Glad to read that it going to be part of a volume charity event rather than a single copy going to the highest bidder. More like the Harry School Book duo…

Avatar Image says:

That would be an interesting read, wonder if it will ever become public. Ah well, I’ll make due with re-re-re-(etc :p )-reading the books we do have trying to find things I may have missed before.

Avatar Image says:

My mouth is hanging open. Clever ending….

Avatar Image says:

Ok, wow. So, are we gonna get this prequel published and sold like the others were, or is it just something for the charity?

Avatar Image says:

AWESOME!

Avatar Image says:

AWESOME!!!! first? how much will that go for? :D

Avatar Image says:

cool

Avatar Image says:

So it’ll be online?! YESSS. :DDD Sooo excited.

Avatar Image says:

OH MY GOD! That is so exciting.

Although, I hope she does more like the Fantastic Beasts book that we buy to support charity. Does anyone know if the Tales Book from the first charity auction is has been copied anywhere to read??

Avatar Image says:

That’s nifty! Sweet!

Avatar Image says:

Cool.

Avatar Image says:

first?

that’s really awesome …

hope someone can put some of that info up on leaky when they get it _

Avatar Image says:

Whoever gets this needs to share!

Avatar Image says:

wow! i want to read that so bad!!

Avatar Image says:

OMG! that’s so cool. I wish we could read it.. :(

Avatar Image says:

hmm, the previous comments and the last section of article didnt appear until I had posted… Disregard my first comment :p well, part of it anyways, since we know it will eventually become public knowledge…

Avatar Image says:

OH MY GOD! That is so exciting.

Although, I hope she does more like the Fantastic Beasts book that we buy to support charity. Does anyone know if the Tales Book from the first charity auction is has been copied anywhere to read??

Avatar Image says:

Wow, what I wouldn’t give to have the money to bid on that book.

Avatar Image says:

wow! i want to read that so bad!!

Avatar Image says:

first comment! yeah! wish they’d publish this for normal ppl could read..

Avatar Image says:

wow! i want to read that so bad!!

Avatar Image says:

OMFG! Squee! That so great! Anything is better than nothing. I hope we get to see it eventually. Love you, Jo!

Avatar Image says:

first comment! yeah! wish they’d publish this for normal ppl could read..

Avatar Image says:

Well, that’s great that we’ll be able to read it the day after it’s sold at auction. I certainly hope that website’s server will be able to bear the load of people rushing there to read for themselves.

Avatar Image says:

OH MY GOD!!

THATS AMAZING =]]]]

Avatar Image says:

OMFG! Squee! That so great! Anything is better than nothing. I hope we get to see it eventually. Love you, Jo!

Avatar Image says:

Hope we get to read it!

Avatar Image says:

Awesome!! I wonder when it is set… I hope it’s about the Marauders at Hogwarts! I would SO love to read this but it sucks that she is not writing an entire prequel, atm at least. Alas!

Avatar Image says:

Oooh, I do hope it’s true. That would be an impressive thing, my only question would be pretaining to whether or not it will be published….

Avatar Image says:

The comments are not visible.

Avatar Image says:

I am about to cry this makes me so happy.

Avatar Image says:

The comments are not visible.

Avatar Image says:

Wow… how cool! I hope this is information that will make it into the Scottish book.

Avatar Image says:

I want to read it!!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

I hope it will be released publicly by the person who wins the bidding…

Avatar Image says:

OMG That’s huge. If only us humble fans could read it… I don’t think it will released by whoever buys it. The amount of time and money JKR gives to charity amazes me, what a great woman.

Avatar Image says:

Great, another thing we’ll never get to read!

Avatar Image says:

Sweet!

Avatar Image says:

Oh wow, can’t wait to read it!

Avatar Image says:

Thats really cool! Hopefully they will release that to the public so we all can enjoy it!

Avatar Image says:

Oooooohhh awsooooooooome ! :D what a great thing to have if you win the auction! Maybe the person will be nice and let us read it afterwards, if he/she posts it somewhere LOL :D

Avatar Image says:

whoa…

Avatar Image says:

Wow!!

Avatar Image says:

Um, like I need to read that now? Pretty please? With a cherry on top? KTHXBAI.

Avatar Image says:

OMG!!!!!!!!!! This is really a big NEW!!!!! I want to read it NOWWWW!!! (First?? :D)

Avatar Image says:

first post!!! can’t wait.

Avatar Image says:

absolutely smashing! I love it. This is a brilliant move from JKR, in my opinion. It’s also really fun for her too. go jo!

Avatar Image says:

How exciting! I hope that the person(s) that purchase this card are kind enough to share it with the world like Amazon did with Tales. I wonder if it’s about Harry’s parents, the Marauders, or other characters.

Avatar Image says:

Lovely thought Ms. Rowling but I don’t get the logic of this. The fans have been asking about a prequel forever and suddenly we hear about all these charity only auctions. I don’t see why she can’t just get this published and use the profits for the mentioned charities like she did with the Fantastic Beasts book and the Quidditch book. Look at how many those were sold. I wonder if she has forgotten the average fan who can only afford the regular books.

Avatar Image says:

SQUEE!!

Thank goodness Waterstone is going to post a copy of it on their website the day after the auction. I’m so excited to read it!

Avatar Image says:

FANTASTIC! I can’t wait!!!!

Avatar Image says:

Well, it would be nice if she wrote something that the rest of us could actually afford and read.

Avatar Image says:

I wish we could read it =((((

Avatar Image says:

woo 1st ALSOME!!!! i hope that this is true it would be soooo cool

Avatar Image says:

Now that’s pretty cool. Marauders, anyone?

Avatar Image says:

holy crap! but really what kind of prequel can you write in 800 words? thats not nearly enough!

Avatar Image says:

WOW! I hope we can find out what is exactly on it! :D I can’t believe no one has commented on this yet!!

Avatar Image says:

You will be able to read it—on the Waterstone website the day after the sale.

I think that its lovely what Jo is doing for charities, and I’m thrilled to be able to read anything else in this universe that she chooses to write. Online, offline—whatever. I’m just thrilled!

Avatar Image says:

You CAN read it- it’s going to be posted online on June 11th!!!

Avatar Image says:

Wow!! That’s totally awsome!! I graduate from 8th grade 2morrow!!WOOO

Avatar Image says:

Oops! I posted this before I scrolled down!! :hits hand to forehead: duh

Avatar Image says:

Why does it say there are no comments??

Avatar Image says:

OMG! I want to read that!!!! she needs to write another charity book to be published for the masses! (such as fantastic beasta nad quidditch through the ages!)

Avatar Image says:

should be interesting, how much people will pay for an index card…

Avatar Image says:

1st?

so can we buy this???

Avatar Image says:

wow, I meant to write Fantastic Beasts and Quidditch Through the Ages.

Avatar Image says:

NM bout the 1st my computer was screwed up but is this going to be sold publicly is what i mean

Avatar Image says:

awesome first comment?

Avatar Image says:

It’s about James and Sirius!

Avatar Image says:

WOW! I can’t wait to see what it says!!!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

That’s awesome!!

Avatar Image says:

It’s better than nothing!!

Avatar Image says:

First? W.O.W. Hope this one goes for $4 mill as well ( then again, i would like to buy it…. )

Avatar Image says:

Never mind….apparently…from the comments…it will be available later. Still, I wish it was a bit bigger…may in encyclopeadic format… :)

Avatar Image says:

Wow that is so cool! Maybe whoever buys it at the auction will give us a summary of whats on the notecard like Amazon did with “The Tales of Beedle the Bard”. I hope so.

Avatar Image says:

This actually makes me mad. Those of us who aren’t rich have no hope of reading it. Couldn’t she have it printed or posted online let all of us who want to read it pay 20 dollars and donate that to charity. That way we would all have a chance and money could still be raised. Then maybe those who are less fortunate can also read about the series they love? Don’t get me wrong this is a good thing she is doing but I know all of us who aren’t rich would love to read it to. Or maybe sell chances to raffle and draw a winner.

Avatar Image says:

First comments! Woot!

By the way, Melissa, please photocopy this for us when you get to read it.

Avatar Image says:

o crap the last 2 paragraphs didn’t show up til i posted a comment. hmmm…

Avatar Image says:

I love reading the comments from the people who are like “Rowling is sooooo greedy, why can’t she make it available to all of us, it’s NOT FAIR!11” - when Sue has written above that not only will all of the index cards (including Jo’s) be collected in a book that you CAN buy for charity, but on June 11 all of the cards will evidently be posted - FOR FREE—on Waterstone’s web site!

Oh, and PPPBBBTT!! to all of you posting “FIRST POST!!!” like a total n00b. You’re about 100 posts too late, but no one would care at all even if you were the first.

Avatar Image says:

To echo several people we know: SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

Jessica, I agree. What about us normal folk who don’t have the million$? JKR, please make another little book and it will raise more when millions of people buy it!

Avatar Image says:

And wow, aren’t people who post inadvertent strike-outs so freakin’ lame? Like that guy above me… er, wait a minute…

::hangs head::

Avatar Image says:

omg. GAH i wanna read it sooo bad!!

Avatar Image says:

Wow, that’s awesome! I hope we get to read it at some point but of course it’s great that it goes to charity first. :) Jo’s so awesome with the things she does to help out.

Avatar Image says:

OMGOSH. First to comment! Omgosh. I’m excited. AHH!! sdklfjsdklfjsdklfjskldfsdfsdf

WOOH! I love you Jo Rowling :D

Avatar Image says:

HEADS UP: When you go to the comments link for this piece of news it’s all screwed up… It says 0 comments and the news article is different.

So now I read it will be available to the public, so I am relieved, but I still ask that Jo writes another companion book NOT NOVEL, for charity, that we can all buy and treasure, while we enjoy HP and contribute to a charitable cause. Pretty pretty PLEEEEASE? :)

Avatar Image says:

Oh.. my.. God. That’d be so cool to read.

Avatar Image says:

(And sorry, Felipe, by “that guy above me,” I meant me, not you.)

Avatar Image says:

OMFG this has to be released!

Avatar Image says:

Why oh why couldn’t the prequel & Beedle and Bard been available to ALL fans in shops? Wouldn’t the charities get more money that way?

Avatar Image says:

is too busy LMAO at Bandersnatch to read everything else

Avatar Image says:

it sounds great ,maybe it will have more details about voldamort and his up rising.and about harry’s aunt and about the way they died.Ms rowling i hope it don’t take tow or more years too come out. or is it going too take place before the 19 years later in the 7th book or is it before the first book.

Avatar Image says:

OMG! I thought my excitment was quietly tucked away after the seventh book came out…..but now, Im elated! I cant believe just a few more words of Harrys adventures excite me so much. Cant wait!

Avatar Image says:

I am so excited! How terrible would it be if I completely drained all of my savings and home equity to buy this??! LOL! Let’s hope that someone wins who lies to share.

Avatar Image says:

Sweet! I hope it’s from the Marauders era, because there’s just so much juicy stuff to work with there. But I’m sure it’ll be lovely to read, whatever it is.

Did anyone see that episode of Lipstick Jungle where they’re trying to buy the rights to JKR’s secretly written HP prequel? Ah, if only…. ;)

Avatar Image says:

Can I say awesome?

Avatar Image says:

The history will be about James and Sirius.i read it in other page.

Avatar Image says:

To all ye disappointed masses, who did not take the time to read the article by the amazing Sue Upton IN ITS ENTIRELY:

You will be able to read the prequel, you just don’t have enough money to possess the original. It’s sad, I understand and am in the same boat…I will NEVER own ANYTHING original from JKR’s pen.

group hug, warm tea and biscuits It will all be OK.

Avatar Image says:

Omg this is so exciting, harry potter is not over!!! Jo is coming with more stuff for charity even, the Scottish Book!!! LOL im so happy!!!

Avatar Image says:

guys, stop hating and yelling to the people who didn’t get the ENTIRE POST! when I read it it didn’t say all that and if you go to the main page and click on the comments link it will say 0 comments and the post will be different. So stop being “not nice” about it.

Avatar Image says:

Fabulous news! I just want to get my hands on that card!! Love Jo! :-)

Avatar Image says:

Ooooo! I can’t wait to read it. I wonder whose perspective it will be from. Will it be a Marauder thing? Can’t wait!

Avatar Image says:

People should probably lower their expectations. I’m sure whatever jkr writes will be fab but 800 words is barely an essay. You won’t be getting much. But i’ll definitely be after a copy!

Avatar Image says:

Blimey!!!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

Probably something will never know the contents of :(

Avatar Image says:

Here she goes again…trying to screw the fans again! This time Rowling is going to hear from me!

Avatar Image says:

Joe has done it again! Another fascintating piece of writing that is not open to the public. It is great that it is going to charity. Although I almost wish that it could be published like I wish the Tales of Bettle and Bard should have been published! Oh how I wish she could do that!

Avatar Image says:

I bet/sotra hope it involves Lily!

Avatar Image says:

Blimey! my thoughts are running riot over what this contain. sounds like an extract of a non existant book. could it be about james and the gang ,lily and snape in a school incident? wow, what another precious item from the goddess!

Avatar Image says:

i can’t wait!i hope something cool comes up.like bellatrix lestrange never died and the dark lord rised to power again and it was a mistake to write that.I wish i was like Bellatrix Lestrange.:(

Avatar Image says:

Ah kitkat, what took you so long?(lol) – I’m sure JKR’s quaking in her boots! Anyway I’m sure it’ll be an interesting read but 800 words isn’t a lot.

Avatar Image says:

::points at djm19, kitkat, and harry supporter above (three in a row!)::

::tries to refrain from being not nice

...

...!

...! ! ! !

::head explodes::

Avatar Image says:

AWESOME…...........but JKR please release something to the public, we miss harry Potter ;(

Avatar Image says:

Yay this is so exciting =D Does anyone know where the auction is going to be? I fancy going…

I don’t see why people are griping about it not being a real book/it being up for auction rather than for sale, can you people not read properly? As Bandersnatch said, it’s GOING to be in a book, and not only that, it’ll be on the website free of charge to read!

Avatar Image says:

I’m voting Founders-fic!

Avatar Image says:

Either I’m making a stupid error or I’m right (which probably is not the case).

Is anyone else curious why they’re posting it online the day after auction? Would it not make more sense to keep us hanging or even keep us waiting till it goes on sale to the public and therefore raises more money for charity. I could be completley wrong here though. I’ll have to re-re-read the article…

Avatar Image says:

Cool! An 800 word drabble from Jo – and it will be online soon! Whooo Whooo!!! Go Waterstones!! Can’t wait to read it along with all the other cards – awesome!

Avatar Image says:

All we have to do to get her to write another HP book is to ask her to write more books for charity! LOL.

Avatar Image says:

The best news of the year by far! I’d buy that book compilation JUST for the prequel

Avatar Image says:

Ooh I can’t wait to read it! Waterstones will be the first website I visit on that day :P

I don’t really mind when it’s set, although as much as I love Harry, I’m not entirely sure how exciting his 11 years of cupboardie childhood could be.

I’d much rather hear about the Marauders :D Maybe a bit about James & Lily?

Eeee! :D

Avatar Image says:

I’ve just been to Waterstone’s and asked, the auction will be happening in the Piccadilly shop if anyone’s interested in going =)

Avatar Image says:

omg. thats suprising…i’m….speechless…

Avatar Image says:

sweet! Dear Jo just can’t resist to write something about Harry Potter. and thats brilliant! one day, maybe in few years,or decades-I’m telling you, there will be one, or more Harry Potter books! no one happier than me:D

Avatar Image says:

Its very dissapointing that we will never get to read it, but its cool. I wonder if its about the Maruaders, they were the coolest characters! I heart Remus Lupin!

Avatar Image says:

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

Avatar Image says:

I think it now safe to assume that J.K. Rowling is struggling with a severe case of withdrawal and is just unable to resist the alluring need to return to the Potterverse. ;)

That said, I am incredibly grateful that she is donating this card to such an admirable cause. Also, I’m even more pleased that, unlike the Tales of Beedle the Bard, the content of this card will soon be available for fans to view! This is altogether an awesome blossom with extra awesome.

Avatar Image says:

I know my comment is not relevant to the topic… I just wanted to tell everybody that the deluxe edition of harry potter and the deathly hallows is available in amazon for only 16$... Its happened for the first time that the deluxe edition is priced lower than the regular Hardcover edition…seize your chance to own this valuable book at such a low cost before it goes out of stock….....

Thought all the fans out there like me would like to get your hands on that book…......

And about this card i have an idea that this might be the additional material from JK ROWLING in the special anniversary edition of the sorcerer`s stone you know prequel to HP series

Avatar Image says:

How exciting! I cannot wait for august :)

Avatar Image says:

such an awesome woman!wow…cant wait-june 11th for the story…

Avatar Image says:

I don’t know about you guys, but my stomach made a double-flip when I read about this prequel card.

Knowing that the series is finished and there is no other book to look forward to has been making me feel some withdrawal….and Oh, my God reading this article just pulled me right back into my “gimme, gimme, gimme more Harry Potter” world.

I want to buy the book and I really, really, REALLY, want an actual prequel to the series…even if it’s only the size of the other two charity books. Who knows, maybe in the far away future…like the Star Wars prequel movies.

Avatar Image says:

It’s gonna be published in August?

Avatar Image says:

God Bless you J.K. Rowling!!

Avatar Image says:

Becca, I think it’s invitation only though, otherwise I’d be there

Avatar Image says:

Instead of writing 800 word stories….write a book! Oh, that right….you’re never going to write again!

Avatar Image says:

OH MY GOODNESS! It sounds Brilliant! I’ll be buying the book version for sure!*

Avatar Image says:

AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Avatar Image says:

This is fantastic! Even if it’s only 800 words, it’ll be great to read a little something Harry Potter related again.

Avatar Image says:

Poor kitkat… the grudge will never go away, will it? I wish that just saying “get a life” would make things better… :(

Anyways… EXCITED! _

Avatar Image says:

Wow that’s cool!!! :D

Avatar Image says:

Me and my friends are so happy. We love Harry Potter!!!! We screamed toill our lungs hurt when we found out about the new Harry Potter. We are like Harry Potter’s biggest fans. I won’t read anything else but Harry Potter.

Avatar Image says:

I am really looking forward to reading about the Maraduers. I loved all of them so much but it is so sad we know the end at it ain’t good.

Avatar Image says:

Whoah! I’m not surprised by Jo’s actions. I hope we will get to read it soon. Eventually, I guess. I wonder what awsome idea Jo is going to come up with next. Maybe this: HARRY POTTER AND THE RETURN OF THE JEDI

LOL!!!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

Silly nargles, messing up articles.

Avatar Image says:

“From the Prequel, that is not a prequel, and cannot be considered a prequel, because there is no prequel, but I did do some background research and development of my storyline so that I would finish the Harry Potter Story in 8 books, sorry, I mean 7 Books and a Scottish Book so that people don’t get confused that I would write a prequel, but in a way I did happen to have a few notebooks where I wrote all sorts of background information – but I was just doing a background check to see if the characters would be a contributing part of the Harry Potter Story nothing more or less but some of these characters are a bit chatty and kept on telling me tales, and I was fascinated by what they were saying because maybe I had too much coffee but I am always intrigued by a good tale so they went on, some of these characters that I didn’t exactly include in the Harry Potter books because George Lucas ruined it for everyone with his Prequel Mania so I can’t even admit mine! It’s just not fair!!!”

Jo – if you run background checks on your characters, get them to talk a bit, then you cast your book and don’t mention part of their stories – well some characters you might need to use a Pesky Pixie! spell to make them vanish because imagination is a Genie: able to open portals to wondrous ideas but seems like that Genie left your portal open…

Avatar Image says:

i did not understand i am greek! is jk gonna write another hp?

Avatar Image says:

so is she gonna write books about the potter kids or not because i’ve heard both!?

Avatar Image says:

Hooray! I wonder if this will have anything to do with the missing 24 hours?!

Avatar Image says:

AWESOME!!(= I do hope it’s something regarding the history of Hogwarts, but 800 words just seems so limited! Oh June 11th just can’t come soon enough!

PS: Curse those nargles! haha(=

Avatar Image says:

I wonder if anyone who posted actually read the article? It says that the card’s contents will be made available to the public as part of a book to be published in August, so yes, we will get to read it.
