If you’re American today is the day of barbecues, hot dogs, fireworks, stars and stripes, and we hope you enjoy all those things. If you’re not American, we hope you enjoy the day anyway!

I am a 21 year old… who works two jobs. 7am-330pm I’m at one… and then from 4pm-11pm I am at the other. Weekdays and weeknights. Today is not only a day to have a barbecue and all that jazz… but is a day (and only day this summer) in which BOTH my jobs gave me the day off!!

So, here’s to my only day off this summer! Haha. I hope everyone has a wonderful Independence Day--if you are American. And a wonderful Friday if you are not (pay-day is better than nothing). :)

Happy 4th of July Americans! I am Australian and we are never really taught what the 4th of July celebrations are for…except through the Simpsons. I’ll be in America over Christmas (we get 7.5 weeks holiday here because it’s summer). Anyone have any ideas of where I should go? Only in new York for a few nights but that includes new years eve! Don’t know whether I’ll see Equas, it’s pretty expensive. Diffenatly seeing Legally Blonde the musical and Wicked though!

That’s their official tagline. Isn’t it hysterical? ABC Family is saluting America with a weekend of British films.

Of course I’m thrilled but I don’t put much stock in ABC Family’s logic.

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

Happy Birthday to my fellow Americans, and Thank God we broke away from the Brits :-)

If we hadn’t, it would have been an alternate time line, and (gasp) Jo wouldn’t have been born, and (God Forbid), there would have been no Harry Potter (I’m obviously a Star Trek fan as well).

I had to step away from the HP marathon to get my fireworks fix, but I’m back, and I will be planting myself in front of the TV for the rest of the weekend!!!

Coming from England there isn’t really great need for us to celebrate this day. But my cousins always call me on their time from Kansas to wish me Happy Independence Day! heehee. It’s my mate’s b-day on the fourth and we’ve had a tradition for five years now to watch the film “Born on the Fourth of July” Every time!

I’m clearly very late on this…but happy July 4th to other Americans! I may be incredibly cynical about how our country is run, but I think it may be wise to remind people that the difference between patriotism and nationalism is loving your country and doing your best to improve it, and believing that your country is perfect and better than the others. I would post an eloquent quote, but I can’t find it. Fun Fact that (probably) only Americans or Historians will likely care about: George Washington was not our first president. He was our first president under the modern Constitution. Ever noticed that his term began in 1789, but we declared independence in 1776? We have had several other Presidents of Congress during the American Revolution and under our first constitution, the Articles of Confederation. I’m too lazy to check the exact number, though one count I recall is seven before Washington.

Helios Lightra—Yeah, I think our first “president” was actually John Hanson. My 7th grade history teacher would always say to us, “Who was the first president?” And if we said George Washington, he’d bark, “NO, HE WAS THE EIGHTH!” Eventually, I just had to go look it up to satisfy my curiosity. Even four years later I still remember.
