As it is now August, we have an exciting new contest to bring you today. The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Sorting Hat Song Contest asks you to provide the lyrics to the Sorting Hat song one would have heard during Harry’s seventh year at Hogwarts, the year following the Dark Lord’s downfall, or nineteen years in the future when Harry’s younger son first made his voyage across the Dark Lake. The Sorting Hat begins each year with sage advice and often words of warning to the newest Hogwarts students. For this contest, please pick one of those three time periods and write the lyrics you think the Sorting Hat would sing to accompany that time period. Please make sure your work is canon-based and between 150 to 200 words in length. Any person over the age of the 13 and not involved in the judging process may submit only one original PG13 approximate entry. Please submit your song lyrics to contests@the-leaky-cauldron.org by August 24, 2008 at 11:59 pm (EDT) with “Sorting Hat Song” in the subject line of the e-mail. Please copy-paste the song into the body of the e-mail and include a name to be used for authorship (real name or Leaky Lounge name). One grand prize winner will be chosen from the submissions and receive a custom made wand from Wizard Wood Wands. Full rules and guidelines for this contest can be found right here.

On a related note, the winners of the July contest, the Harry Potter Prequel Contest, have now been chosen and are ready to be announced. After receiving many splendid entries, the winners are:

  • First Place: Fabian and Arthur by Tristan J. Charbonneau
  • Second Place: Aberforth Dumbledore and His Goat by Tanya K
  • Third Place: The Findings and Losings of a First Year by BrwnEyedRaven
  • Honorable Mention: Transfiguration by Fidelia
  • Honorable Mention: The Decline and Fall of Peter Pettigrew by meriadoc.cp

Our first place winner will be receiving a custom made wand from Wizard Wood Wands. Congratulations to all!

Speaking of the prequel winners I loved the 1st place one

Probably not the right place to say this, but the teaser for half blood prince was NOT attached to the recent Mummy film. I went to watch the film and the preview was not shown. I then asked the manager if it was attached and he said it was not. And this is one of the biggest cinema’s in the city around here, so I’m positive it was never attached to this movie.

love how people feel the need to spout out corrections to the post. that’s thoroughly rude.

guys, guys, let’s not fight now. sounds like a cool contest! i would enter, but i’m not really into writing lyrics anymore since i found the old song that i wrote when i was 8, “sleeping on top of the empire state building”. shudder but anyway, good luck to everyone who is entering! :)

    OMG this comp is DEADLY!!

    Avatar Image says:

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO just entered there!!!

    Avatar Image says:

I wish I would have submitted my story:( I got cold feet, but I think I could have really had a good chance of winning.

MuggleQueen said: Also should be EST instead of EDT Lol.

Actually, no. The US is still on Daylight Savings Time until November, so Eastern Daylight Time is correct.

Such amazing stories, everyone! Great job!

My favorite, however: Transfiguration, by Fidelia.

    Avatar Image says:

this is great, I can’t wait to hear the winning song! and I’d really like to write an own one, too, but we’ll see…

    Avatar Image says:

This is my entry, does this count as a submission.

Still not singing a god damn song. None of you tried to help me when I was on fire. So screw you all now you can sort yourselves.

Professor Longbottom: Not like he was the only one on fire.

    Avatar Image says:

I just finished writing mine… one question though: What does canon-based mean??

    Avatar Image says:

based on Book facts. Like can’t say something like Slytherin take it up the * or Ravenclaws is the house from Dimwits. But you can say that Helga Hufflepuff enslaves the house-elves with a barb whip making sure that every generation can feel her wraith from her grave.

I did the year harrys kids go to school! whats everyone else doing?!

    Avatar Image says:

How about what would have been Harry’s last year? A one word song from the sorting hat:

    “Gulp.”

    Avatar Image says:

re: the Contest Page – um…. Surely you mean ‘when Ginny, Luna and NEVILLE’ go back to Hogwarts, not Hermione. In the version I read, Hermione was with Harry and Ron as they searched for Horcuxes and stuff.

    Avatar Image says:

omgawsh i should have entered this ages ago! i only have a week to write it in, but i can do it!

Excellent idea for a contest. Got my entry in. When do we hear the names of the winners?
