St. Martin-in-the-Fields, a church currently undergoing a more-than $70-million project to restore the London landmark; to help raise funds, several important British figures, including J.K. Rowling and Stephen Fry, have donated panes of glass that they have decorated themselves. J.K. Rowling’s, which is signed and decorated with a snitch, may be seen in hi-res in our gallery here.

The church is hosting a contest, the “Give Light” competition; each entry is £10. You may choose to enter for J.K. Rowling’s signed plate. Do so by going to this link. The contest ends on August 31.

10 Pounds???

That’s like $4000 US :-)

God Bless Jo!!!

Wow, some of these entries are quite Paneful…

Some nice entries in there, and for once, some actually eclipses JK’s. But of course Jo’s pane will be the most valuable by a long shot! I am laughing out loud at Gordon Brown entry though. Its so bland! In case you dont know, Gordon Brown is considered to be the most bland and boring UK prime minister ever and man does it show on his entry! Having said that, Clive Sinclair didnt seem to “get it” either but at least his writing is joined up and better looking. I think Joanna Lumley is the best and most artistic in the way she forms a beautiful phrase into a heart. I wouldn’t actually mind having that on my wall along with JK’s ;)

o and by the way, 10 pounds is equal to about 20 u.s dollers

That is so cool of all of these figures to decorate panes. What a great idea for a fundraiser.

@Professor Potter: thanks for the local colour, or lack of it, regarding Gordon Brown. I agree; Joanna’s was quite creative.

Lovely! I was tickled with Sir Neville Marriner’s, who I associate with the cathedral as all one word: SNMoSMITF! Of course it’d be music on his pane.

Rowan Williams’ was insightful, but Ian Hislop’s punny comment made me LOL at work!

cool JKR’s is great (Stephen Fry’s seems rather unlike him but ok it’s cute) but I also love Nick Park’s and Joanna Lumley’s is the prettiest. Charlie Higson’s made me laugh!

Avatar Image says:

I love Jo’s of course! (I WANT IT!) The only other one I think I would bid for would be Wallace and Grommit :) I think those two are awesome :)

Avatar Image says:

I want I want I want! Does anyone know how big it is?

Avatar Image says:

Also, Melissa- the first sentence of this is muddled! =)

Hmmm… Very reluctant to give money to a church but I really want to enter!

Avatar Image says:

Well, if you look at it this way you get to donate to a good cause, you get a chance to enter a contest that, if you won, would be awesome and you get a cool certificate saying that you did indeed donate money. I think it’s fun. I entered. _

Avatar Image says:

Awesome I hope I win, LOVE Nick Park’s aswell, the only thing though: if i win… I’d be so nervous about breaking that!

Avatar Image says:

This is an interesting story. I’m sure that lots of people will enter to win these panes, not only the one by JKR but also those by the other well-known people, so that should really help to raise money.

Good luck to everyone who is entering!

You are so right, who on earth is going to bid for Gordon Brown’s pane?- it’s as boring as a flobber worm! Sheila Hancock’s was very touching.

For those who don’t know, St Martin’s does some wonderful charitable work with the homeless in London – this is a charity well worth supporting even if you don’t win one of the panes.

This is so cool ! I’m entering for JKR’s! _

st martin in the fields, a great name in music, worthy of support. as for the artwork: jkr, as great as picasso, as famous as balzac.

Wow, I really liked some of them, though, of course, Jo’s is, by far the best and the most creative! I love how she keeps helping and contributing to charities, she’s just a wonderful wonderful lady!
