Author J.K. Rowling has donated a complete set of autographed Harry Potter novels to an auction that will benefit a local Scottish Rugby club. Jo donated the books for an auction that will benefit Portobello Rugby Club of Edinburgh, Scotland. The BBC reports this club was destroyed by fire when it was “burned down by vandals in May 2007…Philip Gregory, of Lyon and Turnbull, said JK Rowling had donated the books after hearing about the fire through a friend who is a member of the rugby club committee. Club president Iain Goodall said: ’ The club house has reopened but during the fire we lost everything including all our club archives. We are extremely grateful to JK Rowling for her extremely generous donation and will use the funds to replace the club’s history.’ “

Come on Jo donate to a football club, not a rugby club… like Man United. Sorry I’m a tad bias.

It was a joke, I’m just a big united fan. Anyways I’m glad she’s giving money to another worth cause. This week has been a bit dull in Potter news, I know we aren’t gonna get anything soon, but I really want to hear more about this political fairy tale.

Ravenclaw from Glenn

One of the more interesting tidbits in the ITV bio was when James Runcie asked Jo if people are always asking her for money. She looked a little surprised at the question, but admitted that people do ask her for money, “Sometimes I give it to them”. But she said that the question doesn’t come up a lot…which surprised me. I knew someone whose uncle won the state lottery ($14 million) and he said that people inundated him with requests for cash. The special also said that she gets 75,000 letters a year, some of them are requests from charities and Jo’s foundation is in charge of deciding which ones to support. I like the fact that it’s often her support through an auction of a signed set of books (or the Tales of Beedle the Bard) to raise money. It’s very clever – SHE doesn’t give the money (which makes sense from a financial point of view) it’s raised by Harry Potter collectors and fans. So: WooHoo Go us!

That’s actually a very good point Ravenclaw form Glenn. Never thought about it that way. We are a very giving community and Jo is a smart, and still generous, lady!

Goodonya Jo!! Rugby is the best game in the world…far more exciting than football and american football combined. I played 2nd row (lock) for my uni for 3 years. Speaking of which…I noticed that the concept Quidditch head protector for the upcoming Half Blood Prince film is identical to a Rugby Scrum Cap. xD

Professor Potter

I run a cricket club in my free time and I always fear our scorebooks getting lost, so I always scan them on my PC as a backup and store them online. Its sad about Scottish Rugby loss of history but let that be a lesson to all. Always make backups and keep them offsite Its amazing how many big companies neglect to do this.

J.K.Rowlings – what can I say about a woman who is so giving of her time, and is thoughtful of community ties. She is as wise as she is kind. Glad that you could help out the club in this way!
