here are two more award related pieces of news this morning to update you on. First, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science announced the seven remaining films in contention for the Achievement in Makeup award, and included Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. OotP is among seven films the Academy is considering for the Oscar in this category, with three films to be chosen for the final nominations which are due to be announced on Tuesday, January 22.

Also, due to the ongoing Writer’s Guild strike, the Golden Globes awards ceremony has been canceled and will be replaced by an hour long press conference, where the names of the winners will be announced. As we told you earlier, several cast members of the Harry Potter films have been nominated for their work in other movies (full list here), and we will update you when the awards are announced on January 13, with the press conference to be broadcast at 9:00pm (ET) on NBC.

The year Jason Isaacs is nominated for something and the show is cancelled, AHHHH!

Even if it wasn’t canceled many of the stars probably wouldn’t have gone anyways as they were threatening to boycott the show instead of crossing picket lines.

Makeup? Interesting. GoF wasn’t shortlisted for makeup, but POA was, right?

I’m a sooo pissed that they canceled the Golden Globes! And one of the reasons is cuz of what Hufflepuff said! Damn it! Also, if House wins for best drama, I will scream bloody murder cuz we won’t get to see them get up and accept the award, unless they air like a press conference or something! >:o

I agree with liszetm….House must WIN!

wait…this is a Harry Potter site…..HARRY MUST WIN TOO!

Good luck for Potter in th makeup category… though Sweeney Todd & Pirates seem to be popular choices.

Man, I’m blanking but, was there any serious makeup in movie 5 outside of Voldemort and hair pieces for random characters?? The centaurs, dementors, Grawp, and threstrals were CG. ... What else was there?

It’s too bad Imelda Staunton isn’t being considered for Best Supporting Actress. But that’s not surprising, since David Yates wasn’t able to give her amazing performance the screen impact it deserved, and the film in general is just forgettable six months on. I liked that Yates was able to improve the emotional range of the characters, but in a Potter film there are so many other things that need attention and didn’t get enough of it last time round.

The real innovation in makeup was in GoF, which OoTP simply repeated. Voldemort’s makeup actually looks better in GoF. For sure, if the director isn’t changed for DH, this series can forget about winning Oscars.

It’s all because of Lucius’ hair!

I hope Harry Potter wins for best makeup!

I think most of the Death-Eaters had pretty good makeup, especially Bellatrix, the only thing that Voldemort has that is makeup is his head(with all of the veins and stuff) plus the color of his face, but since the nose is digital I don’t think that counts. Also Filch when he has those disgusting boils on his face. And Hagrid for his beard and hair.

orwont, i couldn’t agree more. Yates did great with the emotional range of the story and characters, but he didn’t get the other things right. What Yates has to consider is that Hp is the biggest blockbuster franchise in Hollywood, sure there should be an emotional edge like in Star Wars V, but there should also be a more “blockbuster” feel in it (more action). The last battle is proof to this, Yates particularly had no idea whatsoever of how to do that scene (anyone wondering why OotP didn’t get shortlisted for Visual Effects this year?) and his companion, Nicholas Hooper’s terrible score piece in that scene proves it. Yates is good, sometimes great, but he should have done a few more blockbusters before touching Hp. Yeah, OotP is definitely boring and forgettable than the others (but i think that’s more or less due to the book). But i disagree with you orwont, about Yates’ influence on the actors, in my opinion he did great with them. Just look at the young actors performances and how the trio acted. Sure, he didn’t do justice with Imelda, but he did great with the others. But I’m glad he will do HbP, i think he would do great with the comedy and the lighter stuff in HbP (even if sucks at Visual Effects and battles). Anyway, i don’t think OotP will even get nominated for Makeup (i agree, the Academy nowadays is considering more about the breakthroughs and innovation more than repeating the same thing again). But, i think “personal favorites” matter as well (just how in the “hell” did Finding Neverland win over John Williams’ Outstanding Original Score for PoA in 2004 and how did Narnia 1 win over Star Wars 3 in Makeup in 2005?). Well, think the final three nominations for “Best Achievement in Make-up and hair Design” would be the following-

1) “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” 2) “Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” 3) “300”

Out of which, Sweeney Todd will win. But, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Stuart Craig and Stephanie McMillan’s Outstanding Production Design for OotP will at least get nominated, these two people have worked and sacrificed more than one could ever tell for Hp and seeing as their work for for Hp got nominated two times before, i think they should win this time (put those “personal favorites “aside Academy). Another field that most people is not considering OotP for the Oscars is Slawomir Idziak’s Great Cinematography for OotP but since he already got nominated for Black Hawk Down back in 2001, I’m not too sure about this, but I’m hoping that he would at least get shortlisted. I do hope that OotP would get nominated for at least one Oscar (even if it would not on Makeup, what about Sound, Sound editing, Costumes (not too sure, i hate Jany Temime) and Film Editing? (not too sure either, but at least long listed)), otherwise it would fall into the category of CoS (the only Hp movie that didn’t get nominated for an Oscar, yet) and if that is the case, i would personally protest to Wb to bring Guillermo del Toro for Dh (which they should do!))
