This isn’t a piece of Harry Potter news per se, but just as we heard from the mysterious R.A.B (now known as Regulus Black) in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, so too will Regulus be bright tonight during the Lunar eclipse. Readers will recall of course that the Black family has a tradition of naming children after their heavenly counterparts. As CNN notes Jack Horkheimer, host of the PBS show “Star Gazer, is calling the event tonight “the moon, the lord of the rings and heart of the lion eclipse.” As the moonlight dims – it won’t go totally dark – Saturn and Regulus will pop out and sandwich the moon. Regulus is the brightest star in the constellation Leo. You can learn more about the mysterious red moon rising and the eclipse tonight here via Astronomy.com.

Oh and a word of caution for mindless Muggles and vigilant wizards alike: Beware of Werewolves! ;)

Dang, im on break i cud have seen it… I didnt know about it, i havent checked harry potter news for a week cuz i didnt have internet- i was at a hotel =[ But i love astronomy and constellations, so next time i’ll be out there with deathly hallows and a flashlight, occasionally watching the stars =] And yeah, its weird that that star is in a lion. Did you know that the star “sirius” is in the constellation “Orion”? Yeah, Orion is this cool greek giant bloke.

“Regulus is the brightest star in LEO? Hmmm … thats ironic.”

I was just going to say that. Very symbolic! Should Regulus have been in Gryffindor?

That must be why Regulus saw the light and tried to make things right in the end. It was written in the stars. Incidentally, how much light remained of the moon depended on from where you were viewing. Here in Portand, OR, it completely disappeared (the reflected light) leaving an orange-red orb that looked like a bloody omen.

that is pretty cool. I never new that Sirius was a star either until I was playing a game a few weeks ago in my elementary school. It was a question about names of stars and they said sirius so I told my friend and she said it was awesome. I wonder if Bellatrix is a star. I’ll come back and post the answer.
