The 143rd episode of PotterCast, our Harry Potter podcast, is online this evening with a lengthy discussion about the recent confirmation of a two part “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” film, with Director David Yates and Screenwriter Steve Kloves returning as well. As it is the big news of the week, Melissa, Sue, and guest host Frak talk about the WB confirmation, David Yates and Steve Kloves returning, and reaction from various cast members and crew. Next, Bit-by-Bit covers the second half of Chapter Nine of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” where we discuss Draco’s alliances and Harry’s visions. Our Scribby Five girls are here as well talking about the “What Is the Crux of a Soul?” essay in their recently released issue of Scribbulus. Finally, in the fabulous, fierce, and furosh Wrap Up of this week’s episode we make it work while talking some Harry Potter themed Project Runway ideas and much more. To listen, just hit the "Play" button on the right side of the page (->), or use iTunes, or direct download.

“Of Two Minds”

- Grimmauld Place: Protection Charms are still working?
- Author Hilde (atschpe) joins Scribby hosts to discuss her essay in Issue 22, “What Is the Crux of a Soul? 7 Horcruxes – 7 Chakras?”
- And we are flamboyant, spot-on, and fierce.

I’ve been thinking on where they should split it. As others have mentioned it being the trio in Malfoy manor. I just think when Harry & Ron are thrown into the dungeon, it’s complete darkness, so it can easily fade to black. It’s a cliffhanger ending, with all hope seemed loss for them. It will leave the viewer on the edge of the seat. Leaving them wanting more.

The break for the Deathly Hallows part 1 might be best with the trio being caught by the snatchers. Then part 2 starts with Malfoy manor. That’s a good tension point both for the end of part one and the beginning of part 2.

Consider this about the on-screen time for the trio in DH:

7 Harrys – Dan only

The Wedding – No Dan

The Ministry – NO TRIO

Gringotts – No Emma

How bizarre it will be to have some of the most exciting parts of the movie not including the trio actors!

The wedding they could do with Dan in makeup (ginger wig, or even cgi’ed changes). Emma would appear in Gringotts, as Hermione is washed back to her own appearance by the thief’s downfall.

I miss John! I love Frak! (the two are not mutually exclusive:)

The movie split discussion was fantastic, y’all! There was one thing I thought of when you were talking about Neville. This clumsy forgetful boy came to school not believing he really deserved to be in Griffindor, and it was Harry, Ron and Hermione who befriended him, were kind to him and helped him on his own journey of self-discovery. Neville is just the kind of kid who would have been horribly picked on in school, yet our trio accepted him from day one.

Also – Oblivion is perhaps my favorite RPG ever! But it does require a disciplined effort not to get sucked in and stay there!

Sue, I agree that the first film should end at shell cottage after Dobby’s death. My only problem is, we haven’t seen Dobby since the second film. Most none book readers will not remember who he was. Unless they reintroduce dobby earlier in the film, his death may not have the impact we’d all want. I wouldn’t be surprised if they replaced him with Kreacher to be honest.

I also like Frak’s idea about ending the film with the trio on the dragon. Remember when the deluxe Deathly Hallows cover came out, we all assumed the dragon image was the end of the story? That would be pretty cool. Still, I think that would put too much information in one part.

They could always cut it earlier, too. It would be very easy to move the Xeno scene to early in the story (prior to Ron’s departure).

Fair Ravenclaw Glenn, I’ve been thinking the same thing, also Godric’s Hollow, one of the most important parts of the book won’t have any of them, if they go the Polyjuice route. They could do that scene without though.

7 Potters would have Emma and Rupert and the rest for a short while until they change. And Gringotts will feature Emma once the Thief’s Downfall activates.

Ravenclaw Glenn and Anne, I doubt they will use very much polyjuice potion in this movie besides the 7 Potters. At the wedding, Dan will probably be completely exposed or under the invisibility cloke. In Godric’s hollow, they’ll probably just hide under the invisibility cloak. I’m not sure how they’ll do the Ministry, but I’m sure they will want their faces on the screen.

Now, I’m really excited to see Helena Bonham Carter pretend to be Hermione-pretending-to-be-Bellatrix. That could be pretty hilarious.

I was just listening to Pottercast143. If you want to split the movies after the meeting with Lovegood, cut right after Harry, Hermione, and the Cloaked Ron fall thru the floor and apparate. Think about the scene. The death eaters are on the first floor of the home. There’s a loud bang. The ceiling explodes and our heroes fall thru the hole and disappear. Cut. Print. Roll previews of the second movie. That’s a good Idea.

The polyjuice is a very difficult strand of the story. Non readers will be confused as to why the trio keep turning into different people during the film. Even if they do show them taking the potion, it will still leave people confused. I think Yates will avoid using it too much in the films. Like at the wedding, I think they’ll just leave Harry as he is. Also the invisibilty cloak is another problem. In DH, the trio are under it a fair bit, and the film makers will want to avoid using it too much. It will distrupt the flow of the film.

JK did answer the question of Snape, he came in before Moody setup the enchantments.

roonwit and anne,

Yeah, I knew I was forgetting something, it was Godric’s Hollow. I think it would be brave of the filmmakers to go all out with the polyjuice, but it would involve hiring a bunch of actors to take the place of the trio.

Seeing Helena Bonham Carter being Hermione being Bella would be really cool! But unfortunately I think that Mollywobbles is right, they will figure a way to reduce the use of the polyjuice in order not only to keep the trio’s faces on screen, but to not confuse the non-book-reading audience – to which I say “It’s gonna be 2010 people!, You have time… READ THE BOOK!”

Yeah thanks Phoenix, I hope they’ll fix it though. I like having it on my iPod in the Podcast section :p

Scott -

If Jo said that, she was mistaken. In “The Prince’s Tale” Snape goes to Grimauld Place AFTER (accidently) cutting off George’s ear – by which time Moody was already dead. So the enchantments had to have been set up before then.

I think the tongue-locking curse was designed specifically to prevent Snape from revealing the location of Grimmauld Place to anyone else. So the tongue sticking to the roof of the mouth was only symbolic to show that that specific knowledge was being locked in (for Snape only), yet anyone onto whom the curse passed would have felt a brief tongue-locking just because of the nature of the curse, even though it wasn’t designed for anyone but Snape.

At least, that’s the way I always understood it.

“Well, Mad-Eye set up a couple of curses against Snape in case he turns up there again. We hope they’ll be strong enough both to keep him out and to bind his tongue if he tries to talk about the place, but we can’t be sure. It would have been insane to keep using the place as headquarters now that its protection has become so shaky.”

This is from Chapter 6 of DH, The Ghoul in Pajamas

I think it would be cool to set up the second movie for the quest of the deathly hallows. Maybe stop the first one right before or right after Xeno’s house. The anticipation for the second movie would be larger if the first stopped at this point. It would leave the viewer going “no, you can’t stop it there!”.
