The 143rd episode of PotterCast, our Harry Potter podcast, is online this evening with a lengthy discussion about the recent confirmation of a two part “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” film, with Director David Yates and Screenwriter Steve Kloves returning as well. As it is the big news of the week, Melissa, Sue, and guest host Frak talk about the WB confirmation, David Yates and Steve Kloves returning, and reaction from various cast members and crew. Next, Bit-by-Bit covers the second half of Chapter Nine of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” where we discuss Draco’s alliances and Harry’s visions. Our Scribby Five girls are here as well talking about the “What Is the Crux of a Soul?” essay in their recently released issue of Scribbulus. Finally, in the fabulous, fierce, and furosh Wrap Up of this week’s episode we make it work while talking some Harry Potter themed Project Runway ideas and much more. To listen, just hit the "Play" button on the right side of the page (->), or use iTunes, or direct download.

“Of Two Minds”

- Two parts of Deathly Hallows? That’s half the show…
- Scottish book is underway.
- Draco’s allegiance and Harry’s visions.
- Grimmauld Place: Protection Charms are still working?
- Author Hilde (atschpe) joins Scribby hosts to discuss her essay in Issue 22, “What Is the Crux of a Soul? 7 Horcruxes – 7 Chakras?”
- And we are flamboyant, spot-on, and fierce.

I am with you Christian, I think starting both movies at Malfoy Manor would be a cool tie in for both movies. I think the scene with Hermione getting tortured is a powerful scene that gets looked over a lot but to start the second movie with it would be so crazy. It would start 2 with a bang-Hermione being tortured, Dobby getting killed and then right into that long day of the bank, dragon, Neville and the ROR, the battle-it would be one great scene after another.

Jo said (or typed) in the Bloomsbury web chat that Snape went to Grimmauld Place straight after escaping from Hogwarts, and before Moody put the protections in place. So either pensieve memories aren’t necessarily chronological, or Jo slipped up in the order they appear.

(My suggestion for the) End scene for Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part I:

Harry

Vol…

Ron

Don’t say it!

Harry

..demort’s looking for the Elder Wand!

SXF Popping and snapping as the enchantments protecting the tent are stripped away

Ron jumps up looking up to the top of the tent.

Ron

“Harry! I told you! The name’s TABOO! We’ve got to get the protections back up!

SFX of popping and of wizards moving around the outside of the tent.

Ron pulls out the deluminator and kills the light in the tent.

Cut to Black

Voice (Greyback)

Come out of there! You’re surrounded!

(super) To Be Continued…

(My suggestion for the) Opening Scene of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II:

Open to Black

Voice (Greyback)

Come out of there! You’re surrounded!

Flash of light briefly illuminates Harry’s face. We see it start to swell, then the light fades.

POV inside tent (Black)- then the flap of the tent is ripped open and several Snatcher point their wands in through the opening.

I don’t think it is too much of a problem having Harry under the invisibility cloak, because they can, like in PS, show Harry from under it, or from Harry’s view point. But I could see them reducing the scenes where Harry gets polyjuiced, though hopefully they will keep the 7 potters scene, as there would be great potential for a bit of visual humour before things get really serious.

I don’t think people will be too confused with the Polyjuice potion, we saw it in the CoS, so it might be used in the DH as well.

Love it! I was looking forward to Scribby 5 this week, because I thought they were gonna go unscripted, due to our rant on the comments, but i guessed wrong….. PLEASE SCRIBBY 5 GO UNSCRIPTED! Its just sooo hard listening to a scripted interview!

Oh I’m sure the Polyjuice will be used in the film, just not as much as it’s used in the book. I def want them to keep the 7 Harry’s. I wonder who they’ll use, seen as Mundungus, Bill and looks like Fluer aswell won’t be in DH. That’s 2 Potters and a guardian.

I haven’t finished listening, but I thought that the 2 HP podcasts I listen to had been switched this week. MC gets a great interview with Jim Dale (something that is usually the purview of PC) and PC goes on for ever (~30 minutes) about 1 news item. Guys, I love ya, but please try to reduce the digressions to a minimum. Melvin, you’re usually good at getting the train back on track, but not this week. We get it: the film’s getting split.

I’m sad to hear the Scribby5 segment is still scripted. I know it’s difficult for some to be freeform in such a constrained time period, but I hope they try. Until that time, I’ll skip Scribby5.

Just a small claim to fame for a moment (It made my day, so I’m telling everyone I can) When they were talking about their fans during the drums, and Frak said “I like when they take pictures of themselves with Pellegrino bottles,” That was me (: Frak told me on Facebook. My day/life has been made now xD

There are so many great places they could split the movie. I think it’s such a difficult choice and I’ll really interested to see which one they pick. As of right now, I agree with Sue on right after Dobby’s death would be a good place to split.

That was an excellent Pottercast! I agree with Sue that the split should be at Dobby’s death. I really don’t like suspenseful cliffhangers because they are way too abrupt. I think that no matter how part 1 ends, people will go see part 2 just the same. Someone mentioned that Dobby hadn’t appeared since movie 2, but what if Dobby appears in movie 6? Remember Harry had Kreacher AND Dobby tail Malfoy?? And even if Dobby isn’t in this next movie, he should still be in DH. I just think this ending would be calm and slow-paced, when the rest of part 1 is mostly action and suspense. It could fade out with the sound of the waves crashing onto the rocks, and Harry digging a grave for Dobby, or Harry just staring at the makeshift headstone. I don’t know, I just really like the idea.

I definitely think they’ll include the 7 Potters scene, wouldn’t it be such a great boost for Dan’s acting skills? Can you imagine Dan as Fleur who transformed into Harry giving Bill that sickening look overflowing with love? I think it’d be hilarious. It’d just be great.

Also, I do recall Jo mentioning that Snape went to Grimmauld Place right after he killed Dumbledore. But in “Prince’s Tale”, he didn’t go there until after the 7 Potters, so like someone else had said, the protection Moody set up against Snape must have already been in place. But I’m pretty sure those memories were in chronological order, so Jo must’ve slipped up. Maybe Snape got through Moody’s protection ‘cause he’s just mad skilled like that.

I love Frak!! “Pellegrino!” Gosh, I’m going around everywhere saying that , it’s hilarious!! Loved this episode, though I hope you guys do a special on this split soon, I’m hoping for that!!

Anyhow, about the split, I thought they’d do it from the Silver Doe part till now. It’d be a great stand-alone film as well as a two-part film and it’d end on a note of hope. As Melissa said, it’d give a lot of hope to know that someone is on their side. But I like Frak’s idea about Gringotts too, because then, it’d be devoting a lot of time to some of the more important scenes like the battle and Snape’s story and King’s Cross station. Dobby’s death would be good too, as long as they show Harry making a resolution that “I am going to fight this.” and they show him emerging as the true leader that he is. That’s be full of a hope too, and a sort of cliffhanger ending at the same time! Ok, I’m confused now!!!

Oh, and that tongue-locking thing got me confused too, but I think Jo did say Snape came right after Dumbledore’s death, before Moody came in. So, does this mean that the memories are not in order? I don’t know, but it’s the only logical explanation. The taboo, I think it did work inside Grimmauld Place too, the death eaters swarming around outside proved that, but the Fidelius Charm kept it hidden, I think. That’s why they knew someone was saying it,but couldn’t find them. Otherwise, why else would they stak out at Grimmauld Place for so long.

Great show guys! I’m still hoping for a John-Frak one when John returns! It’s going to be a classic, I’m sure!!

In reference to where the first of the Deathly Hallows movies should end, I was thinking that it should end right at the end of the chapter called “Deathly Hallows”. The trio have learned about the Deathly Hallows from Xenophilius Lovegood and have just listened to Potterwatch. it is after that when Harry uses Voldemort’s name and the Death Eaters find them because of the Taboo. I think it would be a great cliffhanger to have them walking out to the Death Eaters and leave the people wondering what will happen. I think this is allow for plenty of time for the battle while including enough of the Deathly Hallows in the first movie and leaving the viewers excited to watch the next one.
