Morning all! HAPPY BELTANE, the first day of the Celtic Summer quarter. Yes, it is a fertility festival, but the prime concern is with agriculture and stock rearing and the Northern Hemisphere climate is notoriously unpredictable. Crop failure was an ever-present possibility.

Forgetmenot Today is not a holiday, we have the first Monday in May as a Bank Holiday. I choose to celebrate today because I follow the Celtic calendar, it is more in step with the countryside around me.

Madame Minerva I may be too tired to play tonight, but my team is Hufflepuff.

I need coffee. Bbl.

Quick checkin, getting my broomstick ready!!!

forgetmenot alas, today is not a holiday, but I like May 1 since then it really realllllllly feels like spring (despite the cool breeze and clouds today – and despite the trees actually blooming/leafing in April!!) I also remember celebrating a very simple May Day when I was in school. In elementary school we’d bring flowers home. . . I think. Of course I could be mixing that up with Mother’s Day (though that’s a Sunday and I wouldn’t have had school). . .!!! :D Plus one of my German teachers celebrated May Day in our class. :)

Anyhow, you’ve hit the nail on the head with the time difference and games. Gah!! I’ve gotten the thought that I wanted to do more Wheel, so perhaps next weekend (or the one after that) we can do something in the afternoon – which would be evening for all of you there. And it really isn’t that early (except for CoughLemonCough) over here. . . though MM might have soccer games during the day. . . but then we can keep playing until the night! :D It’ll be like watching New Years happen around the world!!! LOL!!

Giant in Name Only Hi!!!! It’s been too long! Check out the game plans for Jeopardy on page 31. . . it’d be great if you could join in!!

Graymayne YEAH HUFFLEPUFF!!! I hope you can join in tonight. :D Interesting info about May 1; Wikipedia mentioned something about Beltane. So Lemon was right that it can be considered a celebration/ceremony for the fertility of the earth! :)

Mistic Willow Happy Thursday to you, too! Alas, I can’t send sunshine over there as we have little of it today. :/ BTW are you watching AI anymore, or are you done with it??

Laura good luck with your paper due tomorrow!!! I’ll leave out the Red Bull, and if the effect wears off, some Romping Hippogriff, on the bar’s counter. You can finish off the Romping Hippogriff but if you drink too much you might grow a beak, paws, and a couple hoofs. I think there’s just enough to stop short of that. Though your nose might get a bit pointy.

OK this was way longer than a quick checkin. . . see you later!!!!

Wotcher Ya’ll

Catching up, but had to comment on a couple of things-

Korey sorry you have to have the surgery in order to find conclusive results, hope and pray all goes well and this is the end of it for you – hugs and healing spells sent now to build up a huge stockpile for the 6th. good luck.

Rhiannon I know the whole book can’t get in a 2 hr movie, but it still could have been done better and should have been a 2 part, 2.5 to 3 hr movie for each part – they could have done it for OotP as I hope they do for DH. I really fear how HBP is going to be under Yates’ direction. Have you gone on your trip yet and are back/ if so hope it was fun; if not hope it will be fun.

LemonFarrie that was my 3rd time seeing OotP – see above comments

to ya’ll – hope you are having, had and/or will have a great day

Sirius B Yes, we had a wonderful time in London. It is a great city with so much history. I could keep going back every year.

I love the movies, but they will never hold the allure of the books as far as detail. There are things in the films that set my teeth on edge, and I don’t think that the WB yet gets it that this isn’t a “kids movie” so they put that rediculous 2 hour time limit on them. I even think that DH could be made into a decent 3 hour movie, because I just don’t buy into the whole two parter thing. I hope some of the theaters will show parts one and two back to back when the second part comes out. Would I stand in line for that. Oh, Yes!

Minerva Don’t change the time. I will pop I when I can. Thanks for that.

Happy May Day/Beltane, Everyone!

May Day is not a holiday here. The only holiday we get in May is the last Monday of the month, which we observe for Memorial Day to honor our military lost in combat.

I have not been to bed yet. It is 9:30 AM here. I am not really conscious and doubt I could see well enough to proof this in any case, so please forgive any typos. :) I just can’t go to bed, no matter the time, without popping by here first.

Giant!!!!! Its simply spiffing to see you, how ever have you been? It has been way too long since you have dropped in to the castle! I hope you will come around to chat more often, we’ve missed you.

forgetmenot I hope the car repairs are less expensive than you are anticipating. That is such a drag! I guess you probably are not going to do a whole lot of racing around the Audobon at 45 mph, but I amused myself for quite awhile thinking about it. I can see you with your snowy owl perched on your shoulder, a scarf whipping in the wind out the window, singing along to the radio (NOT to The Hoff no matter what Wolfie says!) and passing everyone left and right. :) I actually got to ride on the Audobon when I was in Germany as a teenager. We were in a tour bus and I think the limit for them was somewhere around 85 mph. Does that sound right? Whatever, it was still FAST!!! Our driver’s name was Rheinhart and he was HOT. And he handled that bus like a porsche. The other girls on the tour and I spent considerable time ogling him instead of the scenery. :)

Sirius good to see you! I hope the Trolls have ben staying away, let me know if I need to strengthen the hex on them, it might start to fade a bit over time. Hope you have a good day! :)

I started the second book in the Twilight series last night (which is why I have yet to go to bed, I have about 40 pages left, but I can’t keep my eyes in focus well enough to finish it, I’ll have to wait until after I sleep a bit.) The first book I really just thought was OK, but I like the second one a lot better. Her writing style improved dramatically from the first one, and there is also just more of an overall feeling of menace in this one, it’s scarier and also more emotional, or maybe more believably emotional than the first, I think. It will never compare in a million years to HP, but I am enjoying it a lot more now, so I am anxious to start the third one. As long as I can keep away the nightmares. It hasn’t been too bad yet.

I am off to try to cage a few hours of sleep. I am not sure that I will get to make the game tonight after all, depending on the time limit you guys adhere to. Somehow I mixed up LemonDrop’s fastpitch schedule and missed the fact that she has a double header today at home. If I am conscious I will try to make the early part of it, but will have to duck out to go to her games.

Huff travel safely! Remember the anti-theft and anti-jinx spells for your broom!

BBL. XOXOXOX

Happy May Day…Its snowing…

Thanks for the Red Bull, Huff, I’m gonna need it! I just hit page 3 – OMG, this is going to be rough. I think lots of figures is going to be my salvation.

Hi, Giant, so good to see you again!!!

Hello everyone else!!

Giant good to see you back here.

Laura Oh no, it’s not supposed to snow in May (although it happened here, too two years ago. I hope that spring is coming soon for you. And good luck with your paper.

Lemon LOL, your bus driver sounds like a normal German one. I tried a converter and it came up with 62 mph as the speed limit for busses in Germany (100 km/h). The 45 PS was actually the horsepower (it converts to 33 KW). I don’t know how you measure that in the US. The car drives up to 80 mph. But it is true that we have no speed limits on our motorways (Autobahn). Only if specifically mentioned. And there are unfortunately enough people driving 125 or even up to 145 mph! I think it is dangerous, because these people can’t really react properly at this speed and it can get dangerous when slower cars want to overtake a truck or anything else. There is nothing in your rear mirror and when you change lane there is suddenly another car. There have been several (big) accidents in the last years due overreaction when people “jumped” or got scared by cars approaching very fast. Sorry for the rant. I know the costs for fixing the car already, so no good surprises there :-(

Hufflebug It would be nice if there would be a game in which I could participate, but oh well. I know it’s like this. And I have the advantage of being the only one today with a holiday. Yeah! I will be back to work tomorrow for one day and then it’s the weekend. big smile

Have a nice afternooon everyone. I still need to do things around the flat and I’ll need dinner at some point. I was quite productive with five loads of washing today. It’s not really warm and very windy outside, so the washing dries well on my balcony.

Hi forgetmenot, I haven’t talked to you in ages! Glad to hear you got so much sleep last night, and I hope you won’t relapse again. Spring is here, it just includes alternating sun and snow. Don’t be fooled, it was 80 degrees F yesterday.

Hi Laura! Yes, it’s quite some time that we chatted. I have to look up how many °C that is. But it sounds quite warm. The temperature in Farhenheit keeps confusing me. Water boils at 110°C and so 80°C is far too hot for anyone to live in. So that’s why I keep thinking that it must be very warm. I know that it converts differently though and not linear either, which doesn’t make it easier, lol. So much for science :-)

Posted by forgetmenot on May 01, 2008 @ 02:51 PM

Oh that’s 26°C. If we have a good summer it gets this warm. Hmmmmm! And then snow??? scratches head confused

forgetmenot, I’m not sure where Giant is, but that’s just how the weather goes in the Rocky Mountain west. I lived in Montana for a few years, so this is actually a bit milder climate.

ironsos, I go to the main Leaky page, scroll down to the poll, usually vote again, and then click on comments. It is a multi-step process for me. Many people probably bookmark the page and then just pull it up that way, but I like the smaller box, and I can’t get that if I open the comments page in a normal browser without going to Leaky first. However, I have a tendency to never shut down my laptop, so I usually just minimize the box when I go to be, close the laptop, and then pull up the page and refresh first thing in the morning.

Ahh, that’s right, Giant, thanks for the reminder! Haven’t yall been pounded quite a bit by weather lately?

LAURA; Thank you. I then keep hitting f5 for new posts. Is this correct?

Posted by ironsos on May 01, 2008 @ 03:33 PM
forgetmenot

Ironsos I enter this page like Laura: go to the main Leaky-page, scroll down to the poll and click on comments. It’s not too slow for me, but it may be due to your connection or line or even due to your computer that it is slow.

Laura Your climate seems a bit like all or nothing :-) Either snow and frost or heat. Here it can get cold in winter and hot in summer, but only for some days (except for unnormal weather periods). But we usually have light frost in winter (around 14 F) and it is warm in summer (around 80 F). Ha, I converted that! So it is quite all right.

Ironsos there are several ways to reload the page and find out if there are new posts and hitting F5 is one of them. There are not many ways to do things “wrong”. There are usually a few ways to get the desired result.

Hufflebug Have a nice weekend! And enjoy yourself!

Ironsos no it’s not you who is slow, usually it’s either the connection or the coputer. And I guess it’s the first. Although the Leaky main page takes some time to load, even with my really quick connection. so don’t worry. And don’t worry about your computing skills or doing something “wrong”. As I said there are usually several ways to do things and you found us here, you post and even have an avatar. So you are doing great! BTW, computers are not easy to break.

I just found out what SLC stands for, lol. You seem to have interesting weather conditions there, but it makes sense.

Laura I like all seasons and I like them at their appropriate length, too, lol. When I lived on Gran Canaria I really missed a proper autumn and winter. Although you could get some of it up in the mountains. As I said I like all seasons and I am usually keen for the saeson to change when it’s been going on long enough. But I like atumn best :-)

Hi Harriett! All seasons have their advantages.

Laura I like how the nature changes, how lots of plants have fruit, how the woods smell of mushrooms and how the weather becomes milder after a hot summer. And later to have a long walk in the woods through the fallen leafs during one of the colder atumn days and then warm up with a nice cup of coffee or tea at a nice fire…

forgetmenot, sorry about the car problems, I hope they are fixed soon, and as cheaply as poss!

Laura, I found a link to the first paragraph of your paper. I am going to spend the rest of my evening consulting my dictionary!! Seriously, HUGE congratulations, you must feel really good to see your work being recognised. xx

Ironsos, I am very far from being an expert on computers, as many patient people here know well! The more you post, and play around, the more at home you will feel. Don’t feel silly for asking questions, you will always get helpful answers! I have had a lot of fun, using what I have learnt here, to explore and experiment, I’m sure you will too!

Isn’t it odd. I’ve had an awful day, but just by typing this out, and being here briefly, I already feel calmer and more relaxed. More magic, I suppose!

Enjoy the games!
