RE: Yesterday’s conversations

No, I didn’t drink on the Tube, but now I wish I had.

Favorite Date movie: Sleepless in Seattle

I loved the Inheritance series. Have the next installment on order. Sept 23rd! The movie was terrible!

Old Star Trek fan. Have the DVD series. Liked the Next Generation. Hated DS9 and Voyager.

Just now getting into Dr. Who, but liked Billie Piper as the Who girl from last season.

Just random thoughts. Got to work!

Rhiannon I liked the original, the next generation and the first few seasons of DS9 – about the time they introduced the race of shape-shifters and their hitmen it lost it’s appeal to me, didn’t like voyager much and never watched the new one (the one with Scott Bakula) enough to get hooked liked most of the few of the ones I got to see tho.

Big Dr Who fan here…. Seen all the Dr’s… William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy… Not really too sanguine on the “new” Dr’s… Billie Piper is ok as a companion I guess… But not as compelling as many of the older ones… Tennant is ok also I guess… But in general I am not too fond of the writing of the new series… Just not up to “snuff” as it were… JMHO… Cheers…

Won-Two I just don’t have much to compare it to. I suppose I have watched a few of the old ones and didn’t get it, just like I didn’t get Monty Python or the Prisoner, so I just gave up on it. This season I am trying to give it a chance, probably because of Daviad Tennent, but I still think every Fri night

1) What old musty prop room at the BBC did they get that out of?, or

2) So they ran out of money so this episode is in modern day England with very little dialogue

Had some of the same thoughts about the original Star Trek, but at least I got it. LOL

WonTwo iloved Tom Baker as Dr Who, didn’t see the earlier Drs and haven’t been able to watch it regularly enough since to get into the newer Drs – I have seen a couple of the new shows and think they’re ok, but not up to Tom Baker – I used to dress as him for Halloween

hi Deanie buttering up the boss are we???

Rhiannon – I love Monty Python – it’s my kind of humor (or is that homour if ine is British?) and loved The Prisoner growing up – I’ve caught a few episodes here and it’s just as good as before-I have a Prisoner story – My Dad, brother & myself were BIG fans, never missed an episode – we were watching the last episode – where we knew in advance that he was going to find one who #1 was and get off the island and back to England – when my grandmother called my mother with some emergency that needed attention so my Mom decided to go see what was up and solve the crisis; guess who was voluntered to go with Mom and help out and didn’t get to see most of the show? yep, me. I was PO’d to say the least, got to see about the first 5 minutes, about 10 minutes at Grannies (as that was how long it took for Mom to solve the problem)and the closing credits back home.

Hey Lorking sounds good deanie do you know that the word larking means playing where I come from??? When we where kids we would knock on peoples doors and ask if they where ‘larking out’ which in english meant ‘are you coming out to play’

No, the boss has no idea how I spend my days, but the supervisor writes my annual revues.

Of course, she would not need help with this particular work if she did not have her nose in a book about 75% of the time I walk into her cubicle.

She really doesn’t care how I spend my time as long as my work is caught up. ;)

She doesn’t do a lot of “supervising”, but she maintains the leave grid and writes the revues for the boss to sign. ;)

Good Afternoon Everyone

Just finished breakfast and catching up at the same time. I’ve been up since 5:00AM but forgot to eat. I do that all the time. No wonder I have lost so much weight.

I guess MM went to work today since I didn’t see her post. I’ve been looking through my material again to see if I could find something suitable to make a slip cover for the cushions in the camper. Now I have to put it all away again. What a mess. I want slipcovers so they can be taken off and washed.

Speaking of wash, that reminded me that I had a load of trow pillows in the dryer. I collected a few of the old throw pillows that said to spot clean and washed them in the washer. They were old so didn’t figure it could hurt them. They look like new again! Now I can make some new covers for them and use them in the camper.

Lemon we knew when we purchased a used camper that there would be some updating required. I don’t mind because we got one that was 31 foot and could pay cash for it. The best thing was it only had one owner but it still has most of the orginal furnishings. They are still useable but needs a new facelift. Wish I could do the same for myself. Lol We didn’t need all the bunks so removed them to make room for a queen size bed. We have enough room that we could have put a king in it but thought we might have trouble getting it through the doors. We do need to start working a little faster as June will soon be here.

Yes, I did know that larking means playing.

I read Kipling and Austin and quite a few other English (in the broadest sense) authors. I have been known to put “u” in words that don’t have them in American English as well as putting “s” in words that in AE have “z”. ;)

And I’m old enough not to trust spellcheck on the computer. ;)

hey sirius I have a similar story but concerning Dr Who. My sister and I were watching a two part episode with Tom Baker and there was a monster down in a pit. We watched the first episode and the monster couldnt speak. In the second episode Dr Who found it and he had some type of amulet that he could put on the monster to enable it to speak. The anticipation built up to fever pitch. Tom Baker put it on the monster, my sister and I held our breath…....... and my mum came in the room and told us that dinner was ready and that we had to go into the kitchen to eat. We argued, but she wouldnt let us stay and dragged us into the kitchen. 30 years later and i have never seen a rerun of the episode or heard the monster speak.

deanie I thought from your post that it sounded like you knew what larking meant :-) I do the opposite sometimes and use a Z instead of an S, usually its a spell checker issue though, when I autocorrect.

Hi coolg I have always wanted to own a campervan, although 31 foot sounds like it would be quite large – do you need a special license to drive it or can you use a normal car license?

I am home just a few minutes before having to pick my daughter up from school. I hope it went well. This was her last day of “real” school before the end of the year. They might have a spelling test tomorrow but otherwise, that was it. She still has to show up for the next two weeks.

She had her math tests today and I hope she remembered to keep a close eye on whether they were asking her to add or subtract.

Also, do any of you remember starting on reading problems in math in First Grade (For you across the pond First Grade is in much of the country the first year you are required to have your child in attendance at school whether public, private or home schooled. Up until then they can just be home with mommy. Our state requires attendance in Kindergarten, the year before First Grade.)

They have also started her on knowing cups, pints, quarts of measure. I didn’t know those until I started working on the Cooking Badge for Girl Scouts. It is a little funny too that they are making them learn this when the rest of the world and, presumably eventually us, is on the metric system.

Do you across the pond still use cups, pints, and quarts in cooking? I think you do although your cups and pints may be slightly different measures. I think I remember that from a conversion chart Deanie put up at CC that I found.

Ooops, LH, our posts crossed!

My son has national school tests all of next week. The school has been talking of nothing else for weeks. It infuriates me to see these kids of 10 and 11 put under so much pressure, the tests mean nothing important to the kids. But how well the kids score gives the school a good or poor standing in the performance tables. It is far more about the school than the children.

I hope your daughter has a fun last two weeks at school, and really enjoys her holidays! Do you have any plans?

I know pints, pounds and ounces. I find it hard to cook in kilos and millilitres.

I also use stones for weight, as in, I am about 8 1/2 stone. I have no idea what that is in pounds. I know there are 16 pounds to a stone, but I’m not sure if uk pounds are the same as us pounds?

I am about 5ft 2inches. More and more the uk works in metres and centimetres, I have no idea how tall I am!!

TMI, sorry! lol!!

Sirius B One more story. When we were in London we struck up a conversation with a young man (anyone under 50 is young) from Manchester at dinner one night. He admitted to us that he didn’t get Monty Python either. He was embarrased, because he felt it was un-patriotic, but I reassured him that there were probably lots of folks who were to embarrased to admit it. We should join together and let the world know.

Ooohhh yes!!! I LOVE Sleepless in Seattle. It is one of those movies I can watch again and again, especially if I’m a little down. It makes me feels happier somehow.

Also, for that purpose I like: Daddy Long Legs with Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron, and Sabrina, especially the Audrey Hepburn version, Father Goose with Cary Grant and Leslie Caron, Indiscreet with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman, and Operation Petticoat with Cary Grant and Tony Curtis, and The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.

There are more but those tend to be my “go to” movies when I need comfort food.

Mistress of the Hounds

Asti, Actually a “stone” is 14 pounds avoirdupois which is what we use. One pound equals 16 ounces by weight.

Cooking measures are very easy. By volume: One Cup = 8 Ounces = 16 Tablespoons. One pint = 2 Cups. One Quart = 2 Pints = 4 Cups = 32 Ounces = 64 Tablespoons. One Gallon = 4 Quarts = 8 Pints = 16 Cups = 128 Ounces. So it all builds off the Tablespoon, the Ounce or the Cup measure. If you have any 2 of those, you can measure the volume of almost anything.

It may get tedious, but it will work.

Generally speaking one large chicken egg is equal to 2 ounces. So if you substitute egg whites for a whole egg, it requires 2 ounces per replaced egg.

One standard stick of butter is one fourth cup or 2 ounces by volume even though it is also one fourth pound or four ounces by weight.

You just need to know if you are cooking by weight (pound cake) or by volume (merengue). ;)

Do you believe that I have not actually cooked a meal from scratch in over 15 years? ;)

Home time for me. ;)

Bbl. ;)

Sirius and Ironsos Out camper is a pull behind but not a fifth wheel. Looked at 5th wheel but if we ever changed trucks, it would limit us in choices. I like being able to unhook when we get to where we are going and have a vehicle to drive around in, not one where you have to pull a vehicle too.Lol

Deanie, lol, I have been around babies and their weight too long! They don’t have stones when they are little! Honestly, I knew it was 16lb in a pound and 14 in a stone!

It is rare for me to come across a recipe involving cups, that measurement is not used here, though I do have an equivilency table, just in case!

I cook from scratch almost every night, I enjoy cooking. Don’t you miss it?
