First Review of "Half-Blood Prince" Video Game

On the heels of yesterday’s announcement regarding the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince video game which is due out this fall, now comes the first review of an early preview version of the game. Noting that the game is not yet complete, Pocketgamer was able to play portions of the new game on the Nintendo DS platform, and said that “we can say with reasonable confidence this version is looking quite good.” The report continues:

“Visually, The Half-Blood Prince sports a different style to the home console versions of the game, going for stylised, cell-shaded characters over attempted realism. This no doubt makes the game appear even younger, but then the Harry Potter games – especially on handheld – have never really attempted to draw in everyone, despite the fiction’s many adult fans, and this one’s no exception. Everything is geared up for the pre-teen player, then, such as the game’s various mini-games, which you can’t fail but only achieve sort of varying levels of success.”

Stating there are to be mini-games included such as Gobstones and Exploding Snap, the report also gives this tidbit of information: “Outside of the mini-games, the rest of the game is entirely free-roaming, letting you explore Hogwarts at will and pick up side-quests in a random order. The game still follows the plot of the film, but its makers say they were keen not to bog the player down with dialogue and cut-scenes. So if gamers want to tap on certain words in conversations to find out more of the backstory behind them, they can. Or they can also just run amok casting spells on unsuspecting bookcases and Slytherins instead.” ...

“Away from the combat, the game’s story missions offer variety by using certain events in the film’s plot for specially crafted sections. So for the Pensieve bits, where Harry is being tutored by Dumbledore to view Voldemort’s memories, there are point-and-click, quick-time levels to play. Whereas Harry being chased by Death Eaters is translated into a linear, Time Crisis style level.”

Finally, the review indicates that the version they tested was not the completed form of the video game as “there are still a few decisions still to be made. Like the game’s multiplayer, which is likely to offer two-player Quidditch and Duelling, but also possibly some sort of card trading with special codes made available on the official website.” The Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince video game is due to be released around the time the film arrives in theaters November 21, 2008

Thanks very much Pruneau!

I’m not big fan of cell shaded but the game does sound really cool. I am glad that we can attack in this game though, unlike OOtP because some people just are so annoying in these games.

OK. I am not a “gamer” so I don’t know what this involves….but I would suspect that it might have one or two “spoilers” or something? How can this game be out and reviewed before the movie is even got a trailer or poster? Sign me :Confused Gamer Iliterate

OMG, forgive me! I’ve been “away” for a bit, and just found the first ‘Trailer’...it’s on YouTube…also there are other movie sites that have it. But i STILL am curious about how this “game” thing works…Spoiler wise, for those who haven’t seen the trailer or anything….

Hmmm, I’m not too worried about whether it’s cell-shaded or not, but the point of views in these games give me head aches sometimes. Like when you can’t see the person you are trying control. Or oh ya, this was funny: Ron and Hermione are following Harry and then Harry gets trapped in a corner between them. lol. Is that a glitch or something? Everythink else about the games is really good though. I love the idea of being able to randomly walk up to someone and cast a spell at them. hehehe. lol. For anyone who is wondering if the games are worth buying, I would say a definite yes.

I’ve only played OOTP but I’d say that one is worth buying and this one most likely will be as well =)

Eyzie: Zelda: The Wind Waker remains one of the most artistically beautiful games I have ever played, along with Okami and Shadow of the Colossus.

By the by, what does “cell-shaded” mean?

I don’t know what cell-shaded means, but from the pic it looks a lot better than Ootp with the scans of the actors. In Ootp looked like the scans were just pasted onto the heads of the figures, there was little continuity between the face and the rest of the head.

It sounds like this will be pretty good if they keep it similar to the Ootp game. Although one thing I hope they improve is the side quests. The side quests in Ootp mostly consisted of simply looking for things. Looking in every little nook and cranny of a room for an object or place to perform a spell. It would be nice if they made it more like puzzle solving.

They mentioned the gobstones and exploding snap, and I kind of wish they had left those out, didn’t enjoy them in Ootp.

Another improvement I would like to see for the PC version is improved wand control. A mouse simply does not work as well as a wii-mote (although I’ve never used a wii, so i’m taking the word of those who say it worked well). The game seemed to have a difficult time reading the movements of the mouse, making it very difficult to perform spells.

YES!! I’m so excited that there’s going to be a multiplayer thing on the DS and you can trade cards. I really hope they decide to include that because it will be awesome!! I can’t wait =D

EA’s recent attempts at making the games “better” have come at the expense of fun, in my opinion. The fifth game was just a long list of errands you had to do for other characters basically. Find [something] so someone has time to join the D.A., find a secret passage so someone doesn’t get caught going to the Room of Requirement, etc.

My favorite ones are the first three games (PC Platform, of course). They were the most fun. Replicating “Movie Hogwarts” and making it “follow the story better” has come at the expense of having a fun game.

there’s no trailer for the 6th film yet…

AND, I don’t really play the games but I WOULD if they made a SIMS HARRY POTTER. That would be so awesome! I’ve been secretly hoping that they’d somehow read my mind and decide to make a harry potter version of sims.

Yes, I do think that the first three were the best. GoF was horrible, and OotP got rather boring at times.

Rae: You are not the only one who has that wish. I don’t think it is going to happen though. You can get some pretty cool HP custom content online.
