Over the weekend, Collectormania was held in Milton Keynes in England, where actress Natalia Tena took part in an autograph session with fans. Emma, from the Snitchseeker, was able to speak to the actress about her role in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. According to the report, Natalia Tena says her character Tonks “was only on set for the part where Death Eaters attack the Burrow at Christmas (where Harry & Weasleys are present). She said that none of the angst of her character is there – indeed, she and Lupin are just suddenly a couple when they meet there.”
The actress goes on to give a few thoughts as well about “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” and what happens to Tonks during the book, with Tena noting in the film version, she ” would love to have to ride a broom with a pregnant belly.”
Wait a second. Burrow scene that has been added has absolutely nothing to do with Dumbledore’s funeral. Do not mix that two up please. The funeral is in as far as we know. BUT I only mentioned it because it is in one of the comments that they might not be filming it which could be absolutely wrong statement, just to cause some panic. So don’t worry.
“I was lucky enough to talk to Nat myself when I went and I asked her if she was going to be filming a death scene for Deathly Hallows and she said she doubted it highly, . . . .
She also mentioned that they were going to cut Dumbledore’s funeral from the sixth film which really upset me.”
(The above quote was edited to include the parts pertaining to this latest discussion.)
THAT’S the reason people are now talking about Dumbledore’s funeral being cut. I agree with those who have said that they are unhappy about that particular scene not being included. It’s not some side story that can be tossed away because it doesn’t deal directly with Harry. It’s the first time that Harry is allowed to deal openly with his grief, plus it sets up Fawkes leaving and the whole story of just where Dumbledore’s wand is. They could shorten the funeral, but to cut it altogether? Bad idea.
I DO understand that the movie is not the book, but it still bothers me when they take up valuable screen time for things that weren’t even remotely close to canon and then leave out things that set up the next movie. Or should set up the next movie. I’ve said for a long time that they were going to have trouble with the movies when they started leaving out key scenes and key people.
The only problem I see with leaving out the angst for Lupin and Tonks is that they haven’t had enough screen time for anyone who hasn’t read the books to care when they are killed at the end of DH. That does a disservice to the characters and to the richness of Rowling’s writing.
Problem I see is that they are still trying to say this is a children’s movie, even with the PG13 rating. They just need to admit that the appeal is for an older audience and then film it accordingly, which means making the movie longer than 2 hours plus a few minutes.
I am glad I was not the only one confused with this sudden attack of The Burrow at Chrismas. Someone is confusing book 6 with book 7. Thanks for correcting that error.
Sorry, but I still think had someone besides -Kloves-writing the scripts
for those HP films he has that they would have been even better [and would probubly already have gotten credicule acclaim long before OOTP did].
The man who wrote ’’The Queen’s Handbag ’’skit would even have been a better choice than Kloves.[that was excellent in so many ways]
I have always found is odd that from these books that are SO well written ,with such an incredible story that the main screen writer[Kloves] of them can’t seem to
put together incredible scripts. The source [the HP books] ARE AMAZING
Having said that ThIS IS HARRY’S story and most other character’s ,unless they propel his story forward, are just not important to a 2 and a half hour film, something has to give.
I think it’s fin that they cut out the angst but they should at least give them a story since they’re going to die in the 7th movie. It won’t be as emotional because to the movie goers, they’re just going to be random people. It’s been a long time since Lupin was a big role so people forget him already and Tonks never really had a big role in the movies so their death is going to be like ”...wait. Who are they?” type of thing. So I think they should give them at least a little story for emotional and entertainment purposes for the movie goers…
Oh my god, I predicted Tonks/Lupin before ANYONE else I knew, and I love the couple! Sad that they aren’t included more though, because then no-one who hasn’t read the books will care much when they die :(
Am very intruiged to see how this added Death Eaters attacking the Burrow at Christmas scene works out. I hope it doesn’t stick out as a non-book scene, rather than being a great creative addition.
Thats weird that the only scene Tonks will be in is Christamas at the Burrow when she didn’t even spend Christmas w/ them in 6.
Won’t non book readers be confused in Hallows when Lupins all of the sudden tries to leave her and the baby? or will they cut that out too?
They can’t cut Dumbledore’s funeral! thats a big deal
People should just stop complaining. No one would care if Tonks was sad movie-wise. I mean, why give her a subplot in the movie when she’s not even one of the central characters?
I honestly have to admit I wasn’t surprised by this. As interesting as the development of their relationship is in the book, it would become too much of an unnecessary burden in the visual medium to address. Just introducing them as a couple would probably work best, sadly.
Hopefully the attentive scripts for the Deathly Hallow films will remedy any lack of engagement on the part of the audience in their relationship, so that their deaths at the conclusion of that novel are as upsetting as they would be otherwise.
They could have cut Lupin and Tonks out entirely if they wanted. The only thing that’s remotely important in this book is the fact that they’re in love. They are establishing that here so that it’ll all make sense in the next two movies. In other words good job WB on keeping only what is needed and getting rid of the fat.
Its probably the easiest thing to cut down in the books. Their relationship is a sudden surprise to Harry and the Trio…so its not out of place. Its just that we dont see her moaping about. Probably a good thing, as shes never really had her cheerful fun side established, so movie goer’s view of her would be someone easily angered and sad.
