As many readers will remember, actor Robert Pattinson, who portrayed Cedric Diggory in “Goblet of Fire,” has been cast in the role of Edward Cullen in the upcoming film version of Stephenie Meyer’s novel, “Twilight.” A number of news reports have appeared online recently featuring Mr. Pattinson along with an interview with Ms. Meyer, who talks of the comparisons made with Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling. We now have a few news updates regarding all of this as follows:
First, the teaser trailer for “Twilight” was released earlier in the week, showing Robert Pattinson as Edward sweeping Bella off her feet in the sixty-second spot. You can view Robert and actress Kristen Stewart, who portrays Bella Swan in the “Twilight” film, in the trailer right here. A number of screencaps from the trailer are also available and can be found in our Image Galleries. In addition, Robert can be seen in a new official picture of the Twilight cast as well as the first official poster from the film in our galleries as well.
Next, actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart gave an interview with MTV during which the Harry Potter novels were briefly discussed. Once again, the comparison between the Twilight series and Harry Potter was made, to which Mr. Pattinson replied:
“[The difference is that each are] using different metaphors for things. The strange thing about this is it’s so deeply entwined with sexuality, much more so than “Harry Potter,” as virtually all vampire things are — mainly because it’s a love story. “Harry Potter” isn’t really a love story, so a lot of the metaphorical stuff [in “Twilight”] is about teen lust…”
Finally, Time Magazine has an extended profile of author Stephenie Meyer and her “Twilight” series containing some discussion and comparisons between her and J. K. Rowling. In the article, Ms. Meyer notes her feeling that ‘her success is a direct result of the way Rowling changed the book industry…’ The profile goes on to say:
’...children are now willing to read 500-page novels, and adults are now willing to read books written for children. But as artists, they couldn’t be more different. Rowling pieces her books together meticulously, detail by detail. Meyer floods the page like a severed artery. She never uses a sentence when she can use a whole paragraph. Her books are big (500-plus pages) but not dense—they have a pillowy quality distinctly reminiscent of Internet fan fiction. (Which she’ll readily grant: “I don’t think I’m a writer; I think I’m a storyteller,” Meyer says. “The words aren’t always perfect.”)’
Readers can see Robert Pattinson in this new project when “Twilight” is released in theaters December 12, 2008. The first three novels in the Twilight series are available for purchase in our own Cauldron Shop.
I suggest that maybe you Potter fans who are bashing the books go ahead and maybe check the series out at a local library if you’re not willing to spend the money before you go and knock the book.
Just so you know I’m not swinging comments solely from the Twilight fan side of things, I’m a Potter fan too and I thoroughly enjoyed these books. In fact, it’s the only book series to ever knock Harry Potter off the top ranks, which I’m sure you’re well aware of. So instead of being immature and talking without knowledge of the series - ironically, just as you are accusing Rob Pattinson of doing - I think you should take your own advice and read before you speak.
Ya know, just a thought instead of making yourself sound bitter and quite frankly, laugh worthy.
I have read the 3 twilight series books that are out and I love them…............my friends have read them all too and we are all addicts! I enjoyed them as much as the harry potter books (even perhaps more). And i cant wait till next winter for the harry potter and the twilight films!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May i just remind some of you who feel there isnt any character developement in these books and that the characters arent as well explained as in Harry Potter :
The Harry Potter series consists of SEVEN! books!!! The twilight series has three , harry potter also has much smaller print and more pages!
Of course Harry Potter has much more on the whole character thing.
Also Harry Potter appeals to much more people , children and adults alike, Twilight is much more mature ~(in some ways) and mostly based on a love story .
I have to admit i love Twilight much more than Harry , not that i don’t enjoy the Potter books , but i seem to re read the twilight saga much more.
Let me say this – read the book before you critisize.
Both books are amazing , but i know that Harry Potter has been around longer and is more popular , but why can’t Twilight have some Popularity too?
i understand that some people don’t like the twilight series and they are entitled to have their own opinion, but i think these books are really good and to be honest they are nothing like the harry potter books…sure the hp books are full of love, loyalty and friendship, but twilight is full of passion romance and adventure as well and i am glad that leaky decided to post this. and i wish people would stop bashing other people’s works of writing. i think it is ignorant and childish. i love the books and i think Robert is really gonna do a hell of a job playing Edward and i am just as excited at the last book that is coming out and the film. i am probably more excited about this then i am Harry potter because we have not gotten any good news about the films let alone a trailer yet and twilight has news about their film every tuesday on mtv….i am starting to feel like the WB is loosing faith in us fans.
I have read all 3 Twilight books. It is a great story. Apples and Elephants when compared to Harry Potter. The thing that gets me is that it is the MEDIA that keeps trying to draw lines between Rowling and Meyers. Meyers says on her site that there WILL NEVER be another Rowling but that people can still enjoy her work.
I have been obsessed with Harry Potter novels since the moment I began reading them, and I am generally not an obsessive-type person. Then I heard about Twilight one day when they were comparing it with Harry Potter, so I decided to read it to see what all the fuss was about. I feel compelled to say that the Twilight saga is the best thing I ever read. Though they are nothing like Harry Potter in any way, aside from the fact that they each have a truly rabid fanbase, they are still amazing novels. It’s mostly a love story, which I don’t typically go for, but there is other stuff too—action, adventure, fantasy… and it is all very relate-able. You don’t just read the story, you want to climb in that world and live. If you haven’t read them, but are thinking about it, I highly recommend giving them a fair chance. It’s not really a contest to see which books are better… literature is literature, and if you truly enjoy reading, both Harry Potter and Twilight are excellent books.
i’ve read all 3 books avail. waiting on 4th with baited breath, verrrry addicting vampire/werwolf/lovestorry…i’m from washington state and her books actually made me home sick. i wouldnt compare them to harry potter at all. both enjoyable but very different.
I have been thinking about the comments as to why moives like Sweeney Todd aren’t in here, and I think that maybe it’s because some of the movies are favorite characters are in are rated “R” which in my mind is a different type of movie for most of us that are huge Harry Potter Fans.
I had several women friends (I’m 44 yrs old) try to convience me to read “Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse as well as Breaking Dawn which doesn’t come out til Aug 12? for months but I didn’t think I was the kind of person who would enjoy a vampire/werewolf book. I’m more of a Patricia Cornwell, Chris Stewart, Jane Austin, J.K. Rowling, Emily and Charlotte Bronte, etc. kind of gal.
It took 6 months before a woman that I really respected talked me in to reading the books. I literally went from not interested to totally compelled within an hour of stating to read and just like the HP series, I read the first three books in 4 days.
I think it is important to remember that you only get out of a book what you are mentally and emotionally able to understand yourself. If all you can see is a love story that is cheesy, then that is all you will take from it, if on the otherhand you have a deeper meaning and understanding of life through your own knowledge and mental capability then I would image that you will find the “Twilight” series a far more rewarding experience then many of your e-mailers in this forum.
The only thing you lose by not reading it, is the same thing you would have lost if you had listened to any negative advice you heard on any J.K Rowling book or other wonderful reads out there.
Ahh, Sherrie, couldn’t agree more with you!
It seems very childish for people to come and ‘diss’ a novel they have not read, especially when a lot of people have done so with HP. Twilight IS a book in which you have to ‘fall’ into. Once you’ve started to read it, it is VERY difficult to put down. I was the same as the majority of people here, all I said was ‘blah blah blah, nothing will ever touch HP, I don’t like vampires and werewolves, and wizards are the coolest.’ It took me months to actually pick up the book, and I spent the next three days (one of which was Christmas), polishing off the rest of the series.
I am not a teenager anymore, and I still see the beauty of the story. It is MORE than a love story, it encompasses a lot of what HP does, only in a lesser scale (meaning that it doesn’t have a million different names, or spells, you have to memorize). Honestly, give the book a shot, and THEN ‘diss’ it if you want. What are you losing by reading? Nothing. But you could be missing out on a book which can fill the whole in your reading world, that HP left when it finished.
Oh, and about Robert Pattison being put on the site, SO WHAT. Get over it. It’s done, you didn’t have to read it if you didn’t want to. It’s not hurting you by being there. Did you ever stop to think that maybe one of the Leaky staff LIKES Robert as an actor, and wanted to put this up for other people who LIKE him. Jeesh people.
I have read all of the Harry Potter books religiously and I am a huge Twilight fan and have been for about a year. There’s just something about Twilight that HP doesn’t have. I love both of the series but reading discussion boards like this makes me want to smack hardcore HP fans in the face with HBP. Get over yourselves. Just because there’s another book series getting attention doesn’t mean you have to go crazy protective of your series. Comparisons are always going to made to every film adaptation of books BECAUSE HP is so successful. That’s just the way it is.
I suggest that maybe you Potter fans who are bashing the books go ahead and maybe check the series out at a local library if you’re not willing to spend the money before you go and knock the book.
