A bit more on the decision to change the release date of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” from November of this year to July 17th, 2009 is now online. The Canadian Press has a new article on the timing of the move and the large feature on the film in the current issue of Entertainment Weekly. The article cites a rep for WB saying the studio had “mulling the date change for three or four weeks,” but “it really didn’t kind of get on the front-burner until sometime within the last seven days,” Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of distribution, said Sunday.
Entertainment Weekly’s “deadline must have been earlier than the decision, than when we started to get serious about making the decision,” Fellman said. The online version of the feature which we told you about here and here contains an update about the release date change as well as the following as noted on the magazine’s Hollywood Insider blog: “EW and Warner Bros. share a parent company, but they clearly do not share, you know, important … information.”
The blog goes on to joke that the date change will leave Entertainment Weekly “readers in possession of a ‘Dewey Beats Truman’ collectible.” It also notes that British film magazine Empire features Harry Potter on its current cover, though that issue is not strictly a fall preview, touching on big 2009 releases, as well.”
I can wait. I have patience. I know many Harry Potter fans will be very dissapointed, but on the bright side if it does come out during the summer of next year at least there is no school during the summer!
Keeping positive is always a good thing.
We can watch the HBP trailer over and over again untill the waiting day has arrived. It is so awesome.
This was in one of the past articles: WB’s Alan Horn is also cited as saying “I’ve seen the movie. It is fabulous. We would have been perfectly able to have it out in November.”
So if it is fabulous, why couldn’t it be out in November?
If i never saw the coming november on the teaser I would not care so much but changing it so soon after is unforgivable . I am not giving the Time Warner a cent until HP returns to november. I think pirating is wrong but so is WB.
LemonFaerie, you’re acting like a child- if this means that much to you, you need to take a break from the internet. The opening weekend of HBP in july will still go big without your ten bucks, and whoever else signs up for the ridiculous campaign. Sorry, WB wins on this one, so deal with it.
1. I think ‘chocolateisnotforbreakfast’ has it correct. I think that their comments are about the most reasonable, in this whole thing. YES. We are upset. BUT:
2. If you are a TRUE ‘Harry Potter’ fan, this is not the time to be petulant. I’m pretty sure that my comments will not be seen….it is too late in the postings. I’m pretty sure this article will not generate the number of postings on several others. Specifically, I am sorry to say, the ones that have nothing whatever to do with this decision, by WB. How sad that articles about other things [Evanna’s Birthday, Dan’s ‘Entertainment’ interview, Tom Felton’s interview] have been over run with all of this….Leaky is trying their hardest to bring whatever news is relevant to the WB moving the date. But they are ALSO trying to bring in other news that is also important. If you are a true Harry Potter Fan, this should not put you “against all things Harry”. Boycotting WB. Throwing away all your ‘Harry Potter Items’. And writing pettitions [Howlers] isn’t going to change WB’s position either.
I am a Harry Potter Fan, first and foremost. I intend to wait [although disappointed] for July. NO, they won’t “cancel 7 and 8”. To be fair, the moving of HBP brings the whole thing closer together. There will be [as has been stated, over and over] less time between HBP and DH1. This, as you will except, is my own humble opinion. Take it how you will…I hope cooler heads will prevail, here. AGAIN, Thank you, Leaky, for being so patient. This can’t be an easy thing for you to keep up with. Ladies and Gentlemen: Let Karma take care of this. “What goes around, comes around”
You people know damn well that you’re going to see HBP anyway- it’s still 11 months away, and somehow I think your anger will subside and you’ll move on with life…

In the meantime we can watch the HBP trailer over and over again untill the waiting day has arrived. It is so awesome. WATCH IT NOW!!! IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER!!! AND REMEMBER TO REMAIN POSITIVE!!! if you don’t you’ll be sad for 8 months and thats never good.
michele: the magazine might be weekly, but the stories wouldn’t be. I’m sure the articles would be written a month or more in advance, and each magazine put together far ahead of time. Look at the movies… theaters get copies of films sometimes a week or more in advance. The magazine isn’t like the newspaper where everything is current and put up the night before.

Thank you for posting a brilliant comment, Lily. :) I agree with you 100%. We’ve got to move on and stay positive- forget WB, the movie will still be awesome!
Haven’t they made other companies lose money by advertising for the movie and publishing interviews and what not, when the movie’s not there yet? Or, errr movie scheduling in cinemas and stuff…
Maybe not.
In any case, I wanna call WB names but I’ll refrain from doing so on here (grmbl) -
Oh lord! I really can’t believe they’ve done this!! After all this time waiting and the teaser trailer and all the pics.. I was, like so many of you guys sooo excited! :( I feel really gutted!!
I hope they don’t put the last two films back anymore because of this.. and at least if HBP comes out next year we won’t have to wait that much longer for DH.. :/
Still really really really gutted though :( x
