A number of media outlets are tonight reporting that after the recent announcement by Warner Bros. that the sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, would be pushed back to a July 17, 2009 theatrical release, a decision was made by Summit Entertainment to move the release date for the upcoming “Twilight” film up to the now vacated date of November 21, 2008. The BBC has a report online which notes the recent ‘frenzy’ that was caused during the publication of the forth and final book in the series as one of the factors in this decision. News of this move for “Twilight,” which stars Harry Potter actor Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory), also made it over to MTV which quotes Rob Friedman from Summit Entertainment as saying they saw “a unique opportunity to slot in our film, which has been gaining tremendous awareness and momentum over the past several months.”
“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” will now have its release on July 17, 2009.
lol! wow I guess ticking off Harry Potter lovers wasnt enough, now all the twilight haters will be fuming. Anyway I guess this is better than no movie on november 21st.
I for one, am VERY UPSET that WB did this. I am going to boycott all WB films til HBP. I might even wait til HBP is on DVD and rent it. But as for Twilight, there was an available day, they took it, end of story. One of my best friends is a Twilight fan. I can be happy for her, but I still want my Potter!!!
PS- does any one have an address to send a howler to??
Hm… I have no comment on this because I have so many negative ones I`ll be kicked out of here. But I do agree, Twilight will never, ever in a million years take the place of Harry Potter. Possibly beating HP in the box office in opening weekend, maybe – since it is a new movie based on a book. But whatever. Long live Harry Potter!
The Twilight Saga is a passing fad. Breaking Dawn was a disappointment, and the whole series does not even come close to capturing the worldwide phenomenon that is Harry Potter. Postponing Half-Blood Prince is ridiculous to say the least!!!
I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, and have been since the first day it was released in the US. I’ve recently jumped on the Twilight fanwagon and ask this – How on EARTH do you compare the two??? YOU CAN’T! Honestly, Twilight may be written for “young adults” but the themes and love story could be just as well written in an adult book (I’m in my 20’s). You don’t find those themes in Harry Potter – which deals more with the fantasy/magic/evil v. good themes….so stop comparing.
I choose to support BOTH films! Obviously, I’m disappointed with HP6 being pushed until next summer, yes that SUCKS…but at least we can enjoy something else in the meantime. This isn’t the “be all, end all!” Calm down…let’s support the fantasy genre, why don’t we? It will mean more for us to enjoy in the long run.
Okay, I’m stepping off of my soapbox now. :) Love you all.
Fox wrote an article theorizing that the movie push back also has to do with Dan’s role in “Equus.” They don’t want his naked body/sex on stage bit to distract from his clean image in HP. WB hasn’t admitted it, but you have to admit, it’s a good point!!!
I vow to Boycott! We all know they could release both movies without playing with our heads. Leave HP”s original release date alone and put Twilight out around Valentines Day or New Years. Now I will make sure I don’t go see either one of them in the theater, nor any other WB movie for a long time after. I guarantee that if I can resist going to Half Blood Prince in a theater then there is no other movie they could release that will tempt me to break my boycott vow.
Please ENOUGH w/ the Twilight bashing people. I love both series and of course Harry Potter will always be my first love and there’s nothing like your first love. So please enought w/ the Twilight bashing. It was a smart move Summit on they’re behalf, they’re taking advantage of a great opportunity.
I agree w/ many people on here about buying a ticket to another movie and sneaking in to see HBP when it comes out.

I just don’t see why people compare the two books – they are COMPLETELY different! It’s okay to like both!!!!!!!
I have no interest in seeing “Twilight,” or reading the books either. I avoid anything involving vampires pretty much. I prefer books like The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) and Sabriel (Garth Nix), and of course Harry Potter.
I find it really irritating that WB moved the HBP film like that. Not only because I’ve been waiting and waiting, only to have it be moved once we only had 98 days to go. But In addition to that, I had some gift certificates for the local movie theater that expire in December. >:(
wow…this is like shooting someone and then kicking them on the ground (hurts!)
