There is more online now regarding actor Dan Radcliffe’s appearance at New York Times talks event held last night. MTV has two additional articles, where the Harry Potter actor discusses his upcoming role in the Broadway production of “Equus” as well as music, notably Wizard Rock. When asked about the popular wizarding rock music, Dan said that I’ve heard of wizard rock ” Harry and the Potters, right? ” but I haven’t actually heard it yet.”The audience member ” from Harry Potter meet-up club the Group That Shall Not Be Named ” then handed Radcliffe a DVD of Megan and Mallory Schuyler’s “The Wizard Rockumentary” film.

“That’s awesome’ he laughed. “Thank you very much. I’ve just been made aware of it.”

In regards to the more serious matter of his upcoming play, Dan spoke quite a bit about his co-star Richard Griffiths, who also stars as Uncle Vernon in the Potter films. “It’s a whole new set of challenges,” said Radcliffe, who started rehearsals last week for the play that opens in limited engagement September 5. “The Harry Potter thing is useful because there will be a lot of people who’ve never been to the theater before. And if we can [bring them to the theater], that’s amazing.”

On the serious subject matter of the play and the troubled character he will portray, the article notes:To get deeper into the character’s head, Radcliffe has been drawing from “A Clockwork Orange.” “His default setting is that he’s got this Malcolm McDowell rage, so when you show his human side, he’s more interesting. It’s about that stripping-away of who he is, of what makes his personality, the dehumanizing of him to make him acceptable in society, so he can be ‘normal.’

Why the character might blind horses wasn’t the only difficult aspect of the play ” Alan’s (and thereby Radcliffe’s) nudity while doing so caused quite a stir when he first performed the play in London. “Offended mothers were calling up and saying I shouldn’t be doing this, that they weren’t going to go see it,” he said. “OK, don’t see it. They’re treating it like it’s pornography, and it’s not. It’s only seven minutes at the end of the play when I’m naked, and I’m 19 now.”

About that scene ” the Broadway production may have a few surprises in its new staging. Though the choreography was highly praised, “Don’t get too attached to that!” Radcliffe warned. “You’re in there, and there are these hooves flying around, and I’m naked by that point. It’s terrifying. That scene is one of the most shocking pieces of theater, and I deserve very little credit for that. Those ‘horses’ are amazing.”

Dan is also quite complementary about Richard Griffiths, and says he also got some acting tips from another Potter co-star, acclaimed stage actor Sir Michael Gambon (Professor Dumbledore) “I asked him, ‘How do you memorize all those lines?’ ” he recalled. “And he told me to just learn them in rehearsal. So I did, about a month before. By the time opening night came, I knew everyone else’s lines too.”

I was never a big fan of Daniel Radcliffe, but he was LOVELY. He was so nervous when he first came out but then he settled down and was charming and witty and totally endearing. Even more than that, his enthusiasm for the craft of acting – heck, for everything! – was infectious. He fanboyed over Gary Oldman and his favorite poets and authors (Emile Zola??! Who knew?!) and he was perfectly gracious to everyone who asked him questions during the Q&A with the audience at the end. I was really, really impressed with this kid. To have grown up in the public eye like that and yet not be a total little creep? Nice.

A little girl asked him… shoot. I forget what she asked him – something like, “how was it different doing the first film from the later ones?” And he changed gears and instead of answering the question, he addressed HER by asking, “How old are you? 10? Well, I was about your age when I did the first movie and I was terrified!” And he went on like they were the only two people in the room. By the end he was totally at ease, cheerfully taking gifts and engaging the whole room.

At the very end The Voice came over the PA and announced, “NO AUTOGRAPHS!” yet Danny signed for the next 10 minutes anyway. They had to drag him off! Har har.

Such a good guy. Now I really can’t wait to see Equus!

I attended the event also. Dan is a wonderful speaker, and was very charming and personalbe. I saw him in the West End production of Equus and he was fabulous. New York is going to love him!

Avatar Image says:

THanks for that semi detailed report of the event gaminette. I’ve always been a Dan fan and your take made me love him more… And wish I was born on the other side of the ocean so I can see shows like this. lol

g I can’t wait till we visit NY in October to see the play….thanks for the report, Gaminette!

Avatar Image says:

Awesome! He sounds like a really nice guy. And I hope he watches the wizard rock film. Wizard rock is awesome!!!!

Avatar Image says:

i hope he actually watches the wizard rockumentary. it’s awesome! :]

Avatar Image says:

Thanks for that great report Gaminette! That’s precisely the reason why I became a fan of Dan myself, seeing him in interviews, how easy he is with people , and his humour and zest for life.

I wish I was there and could go to the NY staging to compare with the London one which I saw. It will be interesting to learn how they do the end scene, sounds like they are changing it. In the London one I was very impressed with Dan’s sense of choreography (along with the wonderful ‘horses’ of course) and his athleticism was amazing.

being british, i’ve been lucky enough to have seen equus twice – once with dan and richard griffiths in london, and once more recently with alfie allen and simon callow in bath. it is an absolutely remarkable play, and brilliantly staged. having auditioned for and subsequently failed to get the part of alan strang when i was at university, i knew the play going in. but i could not imagine that the role could be played with so much humanity and brought so alive like dan, and alfie for that matter, did in the two productions i saw (i refused to go and see it at university after i didn’t get the part – something about a ‘high horse’...).

so, i urge so who can to go and see it in new york. you won’t be disappointed and may just have your breath taken away from you.

I think that it sounds wonderful, and I too am pouting that my summer trip to New York wasn’t delayed to this fall so that I could see this show. I would love it beyond – Thanks to TLC I have been kept in touch to the things happening in the world of Harry Potter and also the actors in it. Also just a note to anyone if you are reading – I have a nearly eight year old son who loves the series and hence idolizes Dan because of it. He saw a press release for the London Equus and was impressed that Dan/Harry had a six pack that he decided to do sit ups and develop one of his own – which he has now!! I thought that was a good spin on the negative mother comments – becuase of course it isn’t appropriate to let a child see the show nor hear of the exact contents he isn’ t to see, but to know that he (Dan) is a talent beyond being Harry and that really made him a human being. Awesome!!

Life without Wizard Rock? However does he survive? : )

To gaminette and ibelieveinmagic, thanks very much for your posts! That was lovely to hear. Journalists are forever saying the same thing that gaminette did, and it’s apparent from your report that is WHY they immediately include that. I wish i could have seen it for myself. (iz so jealous lol)

About the ending of Equus, i hope they don’t change it too much because it was very impressive indeed. I don’t know how they’d top it, to be honest. To lowerwolf, without giving it away too much, was there much difference between the tour and the London ending?

Hey, he’s gonna be on Conan Obrien on Aug 25 !

Avatar Image says:

Ahh, I hope he watches it! It’s a great movie. I can’t wait to see Equus again in NY <3 It's such an outstanding play.

Avatar Image says:

I’m going on Sept. 8 to see this play! I can’t wait!

Avatar Image says:

To Radcakesfan: I will def watch the Conan show on Utube – never up that late! Thanks for the Heads UP!!! I miss much of that since I am – well out of touch actually!! To Sindie: I am so Jealous of all who are going! That is my son’s 8th birthday and well at least in my mind seems fitting that I should be able to go since it is the anniversary of 36+ hours of labor – alas my mind is all on it’s own usually!

What I look most forward to in the DVD documentaries and behind the scenes interviews are Dans comments. He is an infectiously enthusiastiic person and he makes you smile and laugh. Im always blown away by his maturity and how growing up in the mega limelight hasnt warped him! Thats his parents doing, good for them.

Avatar Image says:

That’s great that someone handed Dan a CD of them! Dan knows a lot about music, I’ve always thought he could become a music critic someday, because he loves music and writing. It’s always fun to read about the new bands he listen to, I’ve discovered several ones that I really like thanks to him. It’s great to listen his comments about Equus too, he obviously knows the play perfectly well. It’s a pleasure to read this boy’s interviews, we were very happy he grow up so well and is such a good image for HP franchise, not one of those ignorants Hollywood teen actors who haven’t read a book in all their lifes and only knows to talk about themselves.

Avatar Image says:

Dan is just all round great, isn’t he? I much prefer his interviews to Emma and Rupert’s who only says ‘that was cool’ and nothing interesting.

Avatar Image says: I just got back from New York yesterday, I saw the evening performance on Saturday night of Equus. Dan was very good, but Richard Griffiths will probably win another Tony, he was incredible. By the way, I was in on the left side, in the Orchestra, and if you really want to see his package, that's the direction he stands in for most of the time he's naked. He came out for his curtain call shirtless and the top button on his jeans was undone. He must have been rushed, because all the other photos I've seen show him in the blue shirt he wore in the production for his curtain call. Some people say that he sometimes comes out of the other door, to the right of the main entrance, so you have to see where his SUV is pulling up. They both came out of the grey stage door on the left this time. He and Richard Griffiths don't come out until their cars are already there. He signed autographs for at least 10 minutes, but expect that neither of them will sign anything other than the playbill or merchandise with the Equus logo on it. Only 1 playbill to a customer. One woman tried to get another, saying she had left hers under her seat, and they told her to go find it (which she did.) There wasn't an empty seat in the house, and it was quite the who's who in the audience. Jeff Goldblum and Jesse McCartney were there, and Tom Cruise walked by about 5 minutes before Dan walked out. Don't be distracted by the screaming, famous people are going to be walking by. I wonder if they are thinking about having Jesse try to take over the role when Dan has to go back to production on HP? Not that I think he's as good an actor, but he's in the right age range and has some experience on the New York stage.
