Alan Horn, the president and chief operating officer of Warner Bros., has issued another statement about the move of the Half-Blood Prince movie to July 2009; in this statement he addresses the fans directly (as far as we know, this statement has only been sent to fan sites) and says that the decision to move the film was “not taken lightly” and “never intended to upset Harry Potter fans.” He also says, “We know you have built this series into what it is.”

‘Many of you have written to me to express your disappointment in our moving “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. Please be assured that we share your love for Harry Potter and would certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films. Over the past 10 years, we have nurtured and protected each film, and the integrity of the books upon which they are based, to the best of our ability. The decision to move “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was not taken lightly, and was never intended to upset our Harry Potter fans. We know you have built this series into what it is, and we thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support. If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap between “Half-Blood Prince” and the much-anticipated first part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which opens in November 2010. So although we have to wait a little longer for “Half-Blood Prince,” the wait from that film until “Deathly Hallows” will be less than 18 months. I am sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you hold on a little longer, I believe it will be worth the wait.’
I think WB is grossly underestimating the resolve of the HP fan base… These are people who would go to watch that film up to 10 times! They buy all the DVD’s and support the companies who market HP movie related stuff… Alienate them and you are shooting yourself in the foot… My investment banker gal pal says this is just a tax dodge… By not releasing the film in 2008 WB will be able to write off a fortune in this years taxes… I don’t know about that, but I do know that by moving the release date to next summer WB has fed cyanide to it’s goose that lays the golden egg…
I don’t mind the delay at all, but I really think WB made that decision a little too quickly… they didn’t consider every outcome. They didn’t even come close.
I see his silver lining and I think I’m over it but YOU KNOW WHAT SUCKS? Kids will have to go through an entire school year for next summer’s release. His speech sounded reminiscent of Umbridge, Fudge, and Skeeter. Y Tu?
To Dave (from page 5 of comments):
The plan is that HBP was to be released (fill in the date here), and that—regardless, DH #1 is to be released in Nov. of 2010, and DH #2 to be released in summer of 2011, so only six months (approximately) would separate the two parts of DH. The “silver lining” on the timing that he’s referring to is that there was to be a two-year break between HBP and DH because of the extended filming length for DH’s two parts. Now, supposedly, the two-year time will be between OotP and HBP, and then the shorter time will be between HBP and DH #1.
Didn’t want to upset the fans? Well, guess what Mr. Horn? WE ARE UPSET!
That’s putting it lightly, in fact. I hate that he’s trying to “pacify” the fanbase with such blatant BS! The wait may be shorter between HBP & DH now but he fails to mention that in doing that he just doubled the wait between OOTP & HBP. Instead of one year we’re waiting TWO. I HATE WARNER BROTHERS!
Horn is also lying about them not making the decision lightly because it WAS a last minute freakin decision and everyone who has been following the news about this train wreck decision knows it. Just ask Entertainment Weekly who published their HP spread advertising HP as a November release the day it was announced it was being pushed back to Summer 2009.
It’s not just the fans WB are messing around either. it’s all the other, smaller businesses that handle the HP merchandising and will be forced to shelve the products they spent money on because of WB’s last minute change of course. And what about the charity that is being forced to look for a new movie to debut at the last minute because WB pulled HBP?
Warner Brother’s really should have put more thought into this decision but it’s obvious they were only thinking about THEIR bottom line when they made it. What Mr. Horn is doing now is damage control but it’s not going to work. WB have broken the fans trust and it is a shame.
Horn seems to feel that everyone is so upset that there would be a big gap between HBP and DH. So what? They were already splitting it into 2 movies, which is more than we could have hoped for; if they are doing DH right, the wait was worth it.
I know it doesn’t mean a hill of beans to a conglomerate as large as WB, but I’m still boycotting all other WB movies. It may not do anything or mean anything, but it makes me feel good.
Did they expect us to be all happy bunnies about the whole situation? Ummm… I don’t think so…. How can they not think of the reaction from the fans?!

lol @ overreaction.
Honestly, I think he was too nice. I found it funny that he suggested that it was us who made HP what it is. No, that was Jo Rowling, and we flocked to it because of her great work. They don’t owe us anything; we pay money to see what they give us when they give it to us, not so that we can have what we want when we want.
Don’t get me wrong: I was hulking out when I first read about the new release date, and I’m still slightly irked, but I’m really, really shocked by the, frankly, infantile reaction from my fellow HP fans.
Please tell him to give me a break. Like we THE FANS didn’t know the time gap between movies. It is like a slap on the face. Please spare me with their “silver lining”, want to make it up to me? Make sure that day one is on the house to the loyal fans, I think that would make it up to me. As a matter of fact I think that would be a great way to make it up to the fans. Opening Day of HBP – ON WB FREE!!
That would make me and everyone else feel better about the move.
Unrealistic? You bet, that is how I feel about WB’s statement.
I feel that the only thing this man cares about is the money. This apology was
just a reaction to the outrage and bad publicity he and WB have earned
themselves by pushing the date back. If you set a release date and need to
change it due to technical difficulties, then I completely understand. But if
you are hoarding it for more money. I do not respect that. And feel completely underwhelmed at the prospect of the new movie. I’m not so sure I’ll see it in theatres now. In fact this has made me pretty disenchanted with the whole movie franchise associated with Harry Potter. It’s really disheartening and greedy.
I guess the millions they’ve already made just aren’t enough. Maybe they should use those extra 8 months to put back all the great story elements they cut out – like Bill and Charley!
"Now look here, Hermione!" said Percy. "A high-ranking Ministry official like Mr. Crouch deserves unswerving obedience from his servants --"[br]"His slave, you mean!" said Hermione, her voice rising passionately, "because he didn't pay Winky
