Thanks much to TLC reader Rachezee, we now have a detailed report from tonight’s test screening of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” As mentioned previously, there are details regarding Harry and Ginny’s kiss, as well as new descriptions of Slughorn’s memory and Riddle’s Horcruxes, Weasley Wheezes, Luna and the Quidditch commentary, the new scene written for the movie about the Death Eaters attack on the Burrow, and pivotal and dramatic scenes involving Snape, Draco, Sectumsempra and much much more. Caution: MAJOR SPOILER WARNING, scroll down for the full report below.

LAST CHANCE

Today I got to see the test screening of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It took place in Chicago at the AMC River East. It was a secret screening, no one in the audience was supposed to know before hand what they were seeing. I was one of only a small handful who already knew what we would be seeing, but I was sworn to secrecy. It was truly the hardest secret I ever had to keep.

It was not entirely complete, however aside from a few blue screens in the background, and one or two special effects missing, it was barely noticeable.

I am a huge fan of Ginny and Harry so I will start with them. There is a lot more Ginny than ever before. She nearly equaled Ron for screen time. We first see her at the Burrow when Harry arrives outside and the first thing he sees is her reading through the window. Harry Just stands there for a moment, gazing up at her. Although she is dating Dean Thomas she never looks happy with him, except when she is snogging him at The Three Broomsticks. She was on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. But the only game we saw was from the Felix Felicis chapter when Ron believes Harry has slipped him the potion. During Christmas at the Burrow, Ginny and Harry wind up on the stairs alone and start to lean into each other to kiss, when the attack on the Burrow interrupts them.

The Burrow does not burn down, but it is surrounded by a ring of fire conjured by Bellatrix. Harry, seeing Bellatrix, runs after her, and Ginny runs after him, right into Greyback. But Harry comes to the rescue and the two of them stand in a very high growing cornfield fending off attacks from the deatheaters. Lupin and Tonks come to the rescue, but that is I believe the last we see of them. There is no Tonks and Lupin relationship and although Tonks’ hair is brown there is no notice taken or any explanation given.

Tom Felton did a fantastic job in this film. Draco character remains true to the book, he even stamps on Harry’s nose. But, sadly, we never get the pleasure of seeing Crabb and Goyle disguised as girls. In fact, they are hardly in this movie. The Sectumsempra scene was really good, even without moaning Myrtle. As Harry and Draco throw spells at each other poor Nigel sits frozen on one of the toilets. Snape runs in shortly and McGonagall is in the doorway after Harry cast the spell (Draco never yells Crucio) and he does do a cure his wounds with a spell that sounds almost like song. But he does not use legilimency on Harry, who runs straight out of the bathroom to McGonagall. In the next scene Hermione and Ginny band together and tell Harry to hide the potions book so not even Harry can find it. Ginny takes Harry to the room of Requirement, and makes him close his eyes while she hides the book. Then she kisses him briefly. By the time he opens his eyes she has vanished.

There was definitely tension between Ron and Hermione. In the very beginning at the Burrow, Ron cleans off a bit of toothpaste from Hermione’s cheek. Later in Slughorn’s class she describes what she smells in the love potion and trails off with “spearmint toothpaste…” Lavender is quite nauseating and although she never gives Ron a necklace she does something equally as vomit worthy, steaming up a window on the Hogwarts Express with her breath and drawing a heart with “R + L” inside it. His relationship ends when he is unconscious and moaning Hermione’s name after being poisoned. He remains confused about why it ended but very relieved.

The kid who played young Tom Riddle was Brilliant. His voice and demeanor raised the hairs on the back of my neck. There is no mention of the Gaunts, but the scene in Slughorn’s office is there. Dumbledore however is truly surprised to learn that Riddle made 7 Horcruxes. It is in that scene that he realizes the ring is a Horcrux. He realizes what it was because when harry handles it briefly he moved his head like Voldemort.

We do get to hear Hagrid and Slughorn singing about Odo the Hero, and Harry is funny and a few lines where true to the book while under the influence of Felix Felicis. There is no Professor Trelawney, or the Dursleys. No Kreacher (no mention of inheriting Grimmauld Place whatsoever) or Dobby, or Bill and Fleur. There are no scenes with the Minister of Magic, and I don’t believe they even mentioned Fudge was sacked (though I may have missed it).

Oh and most sadly of all, no description from Luna about the dangers of the Rotfang Conspiracy. Nor does she commentate the Quidditch match. Luna’s role was very small, but she does have the lion hat and she is the one to find Harry on the train under the invisibility cloak with the help of her Spectrespecs.

Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes was awesome!!! I only wish it were a real store. Unfortunately no U-No-Poo sign, but it was still a sight to see.

The scene with Harry and Snape at the end was the least finished of the movie; the background was mostly screens and lights and occasionally a sound persons head. It was very close to the book, though I thought Snape could have been stronger and angrier, when Harry called him a coward. His some of his last words to Harry are “You may have your mother’s eyes but you are as dim as your father!”

As a huge fan of the books I have found myself getting more and more disappointed by all the changes in the movies and especially in Michael Gambon’s portrayal of Dumbledore who is my favorite character. That being said I was really pleasantly surprised by this movie. Many of the changes were actually entertaining and Gambon has improved enough to be tolerable. It was so much better than Order of the Phoenix. Overall I really enjoyed this movie and can not wait to see it again.

Hi all-

This review seemed too nice after some others I read yesterday.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/38251

Based upon these reviews, WB has messed up the potter world for worse. i wonder if this is truly why the film has been pushed back. Since they changed the ending of the book SO much. No Dumbledore Funeral?! Come on! Plus, no big battle at the end?! There needs to be a tremendous build-up until Snape does his move…but no, they screw it up. I pray they use the time to re-shoot and fix things.

The films are based on the books and people love the books because of the tiny little details which where told in the storyline. Even a 200 minute film could not include every detail from the book. But they have not even left things out of the film, they changed the storyline and happenings. Why is this film called Harry Potter? Maybe Harry Potter is too complex to be filmed… Nevertheless thanks for the report.

i just wanted to tell you you ” fans” that a fan is not someone who just bitches and whines at every mistake made, but a fan is someone who is enjoying every single event or happening in his fan base… The Harry Potter phenom. is about to end so i believe you should try to enjoy the last moments of it… Bitching and whining won’t change anything except perhaps getting the press’ attention and getting our bad side out… Whining will not change the movies so get over yourself and enjoy it while you can and if you truly don’t care about HP then be my guest and don’t go to the last three movies…that will spare us the negativity!!

Guys if you could kindly revisit the special features of the 2nd and 3rd movie, you will find out that JK is present in the writing of the script and that she is aware of every little detail change and that she is also aware of the cuts in the movie…SHE IS IN ON IT!!!!

Hey Harry-

During the 2nd and 3rd films, she was still developing the final chapters of the overall story. So her involvement back then was much more needed so she could control what was and wasn’t done to her universe. Who’s to say now what involvement she has now. The main books are done. Does the funeral get pushed to the beginning of the 7th prt 1 film?

I understand what can and cannot be included in a film. No book is translated 100%. Even in theory. But to have some major plot point be changed from the original book does raise some red flags. And unless you’re her personal secretary, I doubt to can say 100% that she is aware of everything going on.

I don’t think JKR has remotely as much to say in the script or in the making of the movies as some of you seem to think. I severely doubt they’ll let her proof-read the scripts. They’ll ask her before cutting out certain characters (i.e. Kreacher, which she denied) or maybe certain scenes. They won’t ask her (obviously) to give certain lines to other characters or to change the setting of H/G’s first kiss. And why should they ask her. As long as a kiss is in.

I was looking forward to the fantastic Common Room H/G kiss (as I was looking forward to – and still do – to all the romance LOL). I wanted to see it onscreen as it played out in my head and I’m sure in many other fans’ heads due to JKR’s wonderful description. I will never understand why WB feels the need to change around with things like that. But I think it’s not impossible the H/G scenes generally and the RoR kiss specifically can work out fine. I think the WB will show Harry’s growing affection for Ginny, so it won’t really be a rejection. Maybe they just decided to shift the actual H/G relationship to DH part 1. While our disappointment is understandable, we should maybe not yet give up hope. :)

Harry Loony, Whinning may not CHANGE the movies, but being a fan is by no means smiling at every stupid idea cranked out in the fandom. I was a Dark Angel TV series fan all through season one for example and ADORED certain elements of the show, my favorite of which were reduced or dismissed in season 2. And while I acknowledged the little good things in season 2 it doesn’t mean I think it was brilliant. Will I always LOVE my core love of Dark Angel, yes, did I love the turn of season 2, NO!! same with Potter, I absolutly adore damn near EVERYTHING about the books and am dying to crack open my copy of Beedle the Bard’s tales in December, but I DISPISE the direction the movies took around number 4 - were there elements I liked/enjoyed, changes I could accept - yes. But on the whole, I can honestly say the movies have been bad eggs since GoF’s release.

And you know what, at the end of the day JKR wrote her books and told her story. She knows it, we know it, we love it, and some of us just wanted to see at least 75% of that in a live action inactment. Instead we’ve gotten 75% of someone else trying to re-write Potter. I mean Harry watching Dumbledore die through a crack in the door just doesn’t making as much sense as him actually being magically unable to move. It’s not a tough effect people, all Dan has to do is stand still after Dumbledore does a quick flick of the wrist.

And NO FUNERAL! Come on! Plus it would be nice if HBP, actually focused on, I don’t know, the INTRIGUE OF THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE. The reason we discussed for months upon months if Snape was good or bad.

After being really impressed with David Heymans direction of OotP, especially with how true he remained to the book, I must declare after reading this report; HE’S RUINED THE FRIGGINMOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What attack on the burrow, there was no attack friggin’ burrow! Where is Bill and Fleur, one of the only light parts of book 6 , and what about the wedding in Movie 7? And where, oh where, is the Lupin/ Tonks angst, written so beautifully by Jo???? Oh Mr Heyman, how I wish WB had carried on the tradition and had a new director, one who wouldn’t have destroyed a wonderfull book.

I would love it if one day like 30 years from now a true fan of the books would become producer and director of the remake of these movies.HP1-3 were great nearly perfect as the books, then 4&5 were a big dissappointment when it comes to comparing them to the books. I hope I become that person and really do this awesome of a saga the justice it so badly deserves.

Wait, let me get this straight. They cut THE KISS. THE ROMANTIC CLIMAX OF THE ENTIRE FREAKING SERIES, AND THEY CUT IT. Wow. Wow. I don’t think it’s possible for me to like this movie. I’ve accepted every other change that has ever been made, brushed it away. But this really, really annoys me as someone who has been shipping H/G since I read Chamber of Secrets eight years ago. Wow. Can we bring back the OOTP screenwriter? Goldberg or whatever his name was. He managed to do a whole makeout session out of a kiss that wasn’t even actually written, I’m sure he could have done a decent H/G scene.

Oh, and now Harry looks like a pansy, because it’s always the girls kissing him instead of the other way around.
