Thanks much to TLC reader Rachezee, we now have a detailed report from tonight’s test screening of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” As mentioned previously, there are details regarding Harry and Ginny’s kiss, as well as new descriptions of Slughorn’s memory and Riddle’s Horcruxes, Weasley Wheezes, Luna and the Quidditch commentary, the new scene written for the movie about the Death Eaters attack on the Burrow, and pivotal and dramatic scenes involving Snape, Draco, Sectumsempra and much much more. Caution: MAJOR SPOILER WARNING, scroll down for the full report below.

LAST CHANCE

Today I got to see the test screening of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It took place in Chicago at the AMC River East. It was a secret screening, no one in the audience was supposed to know before hand what they were seeing. I was one of only a small handful who already knew what we would be seeing, but I was sworn to secrecy. It was truly the hardest secret I ever had to keep.

It was not entirely complete, however aside from a few blue screens in the background, and one or two special effects missing, it was barely noticeable.

I am a huge fan of Ginny and Harry so I will start with them. There is a lot more Ginny than ever before. She nearly equaled Ron for screen time. We first see her at the Burrow when Harry arrives outside and the first thing he sees is her reading through the window. Harry Just stands there for a moment, gazing up at her. Although she is dating Dean Thomas she never looks happy with him, except when she is snogging him at The Three Broomsticks. She was on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. But the only game we saw was from the Felix Felicis chapter when Ron believes Harry has slipped him the potion. During Christmas at the Burrow, Ginny and Harry wind up on the stairs alone and start to lean into each other to kiss, when the attack on the Burrow interrupts them.

The Burrow does not burn down, but it is surrounded by a ring of fire conjured by Bellatrix. Harry, seeing Bellatrix, runs after her, and Ginny runs after him, right into Greyback. But Harry comes to the rescue and the two of them stand in a very high growing cornfield fending off attacks from the deatheaters. Lupin and Tonks come to the rescue, but that is I believe the last we see of them. There is no Tonks and Lupin relationship and although Tonks’ hair is brown there is no notice taken or any explanation given.

Tom Felton did a fantastic job in this film. Draco character remains true to the book, he even stamps on Harry’s nose. But, sadly, we never get the pleasure of seeing Crabb and Goyle disguised as girls. In fact, they are hardly in this movie. The Sectumsempra scene was really good, even without moaning Myrtle. As Harry and Draco throw spells at each other poor Nigel sits frozen on one of the toilets. Snape runs in shortly and McGonagall is in the doorway after Harry cast the spell (Draco never yells Crucio) and he does do a cure his wounds with a spell that sounds almost like song. But he does not use legilimency on Harry, who runs straight out of the bathroom to McGonagall. In the next scene Hermione and Ginny band together and tell Harry to hide the potions book so not even Harry can find it. Ginny takes Harry to the room of Requirement, and makes him close his eyes while she hides the book. Then she kisses him briefly. By the time he opens his eyes she has vanished.

There was definitely tension between Ron and Hermione. In the very beginning at the Burrow, Ron cleans off a bit of toothpaste from Hermione’s cheek. Later in Slughorn’s class she describes what she smells in the love potion and trails off with “spearmint toothpaste…” Lavender is quite nauseating and although she never gives Ron a necklace she does something equally as vomit worthy, steaming up a window on the Hogwarts Express with her breath and drawing a heart with “R + L” inside it. His relationship ends when he is unconscious and moaning Hermione’s name after being poisoned. He remains confused about why it ended but very relieved.

The kid who played young Tom Riddle was Brilliant. His voice and demeanor raised the hairs on the back of my neck. There is no mention of the Gaunts, but the scene in Slughorn’s office is there. Dumbledore however is truly surprised to learn that Riddle made 7 Horcruxes. It is in that scene that he realizes the ring is a Horcrux. He realizes what it was because when harry handles it briefly he moved his head like Voldemort.

We do get to hear Hagrid and Slughorn singing about Odo the Hero, and Harry is funny and a few lines where true to the book while under the influence of Felix Felicis. There is no Professor Trelawney, or the Dursleys. No Kreacher (no mention of inheriting Grimmauld Place whatsoever) or Dobby, or Bill and Fleur. There are no scenes with the Minister of Magic, and I don’t believe they even mentioned Fudge was sacked (though I may have missed it).

Oh and most sadly of all, no description from Luna about the dangers of the Rotfang Conspiracy. Nor does she commentate the Quidditch match. Luna’s role was very small, but she does have the lion hat and she is the one to find Harry on the train under the invisibility cloak with the help of her Spectrespecs.

Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes was awesome!!! I only wish it were a real store. Unfortunately no U-No-Poo sign, but it was still a sight to see.

The scene with Harry and Snape at the end was the least finished of the movie; the background was mostly screens and lights and occasionally a sound persons head. It was very close to the book, though I thought Snape could have been stronger and angrier, when Harry called him a coward. His some of his last words to Harry are “You may have your mother’s eyes but you are as dim as your father!”

As a huge fan of the books I have found myself getting more and more disappointed by all the changes in the movies and especially in Michael Gambon’s portrayal of Dumbledore who is my favorite character. That being said I was really pleasantly surprised by this movie. Many of the changes were actually entertaining and Gambon has improved enough to be tolerable. It was so much better than Order of the Phoenix. Overall I really enjoyed this movie and can not wait to see it again.

*throws confetti into air

Even though that part in the book was too embarassing for words, the fact that that’s in makes me finally breathe again. I’m pretty sure this will be my favorite movie so far – even thought it seems like I’ll hate it. (: Weird, huh?

I cannot wait to see Tom Felton’s acting. I just have a feeling he’s going to be bloody brilliant and will pull off a performance that will make everyone go WOWWW. =)

The Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione stuff sounds fantastic, as does the Draco stuff. I’m really hopeful for those.

One thing though, I hope they properly build up Snape… I’m worried he won’t get enough attention.

Oh geez- so, the Ron/Hermione adding their toothepaste bit, R + L breaking up at Er-My-Nee, no necklace, mainly just annoys me because I’m rather anal about Ron and Hermione; they are my favorites. I’ll get over it. I’d heard a rumour about Harry and Ginny about to kiss at Christmas and getting attacked, and I’m sad to see that it’s true. This scene is too common to the romantic genre, and Jo Rowling is beyond that in her romances. Nigel is still Colin, eh? Weird. And no Moaning Myrtle- go and listen to The Moaning Myrtle’s “In Which Moaning Myrtle Moans,” it’s about this scene and it’s hilarious. I knew Bill and Fleur weren’t going to be in it, but still- too bad. Every time I see Clemence Poesy(sp?) on a Gap poster I think about this. And now- Lupin and Tonks. WTH????? I was so excited at the pictures of them. So- LUNA finds Harry? And there’s no Tonks/Lupin. What in the name of Merlin are they going to do for Deathly Hallows? Grrrrrr. Their characters are amazing and now they are- largely absent? Lacking plotlines? I’m excited about Hero though; should be interesting, scary, etc. Alas, I’ll still go see it at midnight and hope for the best. But, Tonks and Lupin. Verry sad. I love them too. There’s more, but no one needs to hear it. : )

I don’t care about the changes. I AM EXCITED! I cannot wait for this movie. gah1 Why can’t it come earlier!? sighs Oh well, that’s alright. I can wait.

I’ve said this many times whenever movies come out, don’t judge it until you’ve seen it. And if Jo Rowling is happy, then I am too. :D

Overall, it sounds great. I like the additions, and the toothpaste moment sounds so darn cute. I think cutting the Dursleys makes the story weaker, and I wish they wouldn’t do that, but too late now. I can’t believe they’d cut the big money scenes, namely Dumbledore’s funeral and the big wet Harry/Ginny smooch. That just doesn’t make sense to me, but then they never could get everything right.

I can understand them cutting Tonks and Remus’ relationship, and likewise with the Gaunts. Tonks and Remus’ relationship would have been nice, and I wouldn’t mind if it was included…but the Gaunts bored me. It was very interesting stuff that could have been just a paragraph in the book.

I am SO relieved to hear Draco gets his time in the limelight. I was worried that would have gotten glossed over.

I don’t know how I feel about what has been reported. I am Glad Draco gets his time he deserves it for this story. The H/G sounds disappointing. I mean they made such a big deal about the Harry Cho kiss in OOTP but that was never the important relationship in HP. Ginny is going to be his wife they deserved that run across the room kind of kiss not a peck and then she is gone kiss. The Ron stuff sounds fun so I am glad they kept a lot of that comedy in it. I just worry that so much was cut from OOTP and now it HBP that is needed for DH that I wonder how they are going to put it all together in DH. Maybe that is why they have to split the 7th movie, the first part will have to explain all that was left out of the first 6 movies. :)

Well, I’ve always been disappointed in Gambon’s portrayal of Dumbledore. I’m glad that I’m not the only one. The bathroom scene with Draco was something I was looking forward to see, but why is Nigel there?? No offense to Nigel, but it really makes more sense that he’s alone when Harry discovered him there. I mean, Nigel could essentially tell people and I doubt Draco would want that. I’m a bit disappointed that Moaning Myrtle wasn’t there, but I understand that she’s ultimately not necessary…but Nigel? I guess it was cheaper as they wouldn’t need to alter the actress’ image to become a ghost. Well, if they didn’t put a funeral at the end of the book, I hope it’s somehow included at the beginning of DH: Part I. I thought Hermione was against the HPB’s potion’s book that Harry uses…why would she, along with Ginny, tell him to hide the Potion’s book? Did that happen in the book? I don’t think so (at least to that I can remember) and ultimately, it’d make more sense for Harry to hide it himself as that’d show that Harry was horrified at what the spell could do and in a way sorry that he blindly put his trust in the book.

Well i am officially excited. Not as much as i am to be marrying Bob Weasley, the long-lost triplet, but yeah. Gr a year! We were going to have a harry potter party but instead moved it up a month and turned it into a reformation party. Sigh. I hate changes but anything is good. At least we have the movies and the books will always be there, in their pure format.

A quote from the poster at the forum:

Bellatrix was good but she did not question Snape’s loyalty. A big mistake because I don’t think many people were unsure of Snapes loyalty. The audience did not seem surprised when he killed dumbledore.

Sad. That’s very sad… I wish they would emphasize more on Snape’s story. Good or bad? Nice or evil? Good side or Dark side? But no, they care more about what Voldemort’s doing to the wizarding world and emphasizing on THAT when it really is just BS. Again, why make a new scene when you could have the funeral? Or more cave scenes? Or more Snape scenes? Grr!

BUT – I am still very pleased with this review. I’m definitely going to start being hopeful that this movie won’t be stupid…

I’m very disappointed. I don’t see the point of adding scenes that weren’t in the book and cutting out important scenes that WERE in the book.

My FAVOURITE scene was Harry and Ginny’s kiss in the Common Room after the match. I can’t believe it’s been cut. That right there makes me not want to see it (I still will, but sadly)

I despise Gambon as Dumbledore. I’ve never been able to picture him walking around the castle humming to himself. He does a terrible portrayal, so I’m glad to hear he’s toned his bad acting down a bit. Harris set the tone beautifully as Dumbledore in the first two, and I’ve always been bitter than Gambon had to do a complete 180 with a character who was already established with a great actor. Sad.

sounds like they screwed up another one—when will they learn that the fans liked the books the way they were and that they shouldn’t ‘fix’ what’s not broken? so I guess we will never see Dobby or Winky or anymore new CGI characters. When will WB learn that the reason the first two did so great was because they presented the story the way it was supposed to be, not thrown into the food-processor of ‘cost efficiency’.

I agree with Luna, I am truly disappointed with the H/G Kiss. How could that @#%* Kloves mess that up. It’s in the book and it was a big thing with the shippers. I can’t understand it. I’m truly upset and now I really don’t want to see it. I can wait to see it on cable. They butchered the books and can’t get the important parts in the book. They waste screen time on things that don’t pertain to the story plot. what does buring the burrow have to do what the plot? Time could have been put to other interesting parts in the book. I’m glad we got this preview. I won’t waste my money.

Rachezee is revealing far more on the Lounge forum and it does not look promising. Slughorn is dreadful, Harry flirts with a waitress(WTF?), no funeral, Narcissa is not very good, hardly any Luna and the film ends with the trio and Ginny on top of the tower talking, although Ginny says nothing and just walks away. Sounds horrible.
