Well those sold-out showings at midnight certainly proved popular: Variety is reporting that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was a huge hit, “taking in as much as $20 million when opening at 12:01 a.m. Wedneday at the domestic B.O., according to early estimates. That
figure beats the $18 million earned in midnight runs by Warners’ very
own “The Dark Knight” and the $17 million earned by 20th Century Fox’s
“Star Wars: Episode III ”Revenge of the Sith.” UPDATE: The AP reports WB has announced the actual total is 22.2 Million. Wow!

I hope it grosses the all time high when the run is over. I can hardly wait to see it. The reviews sound awesome!Avatar Imageaxlgirl says: WOOO-HOOO!! Go Harry!! =DAvatar ImageNoble Birth Descending says: HBP was a wonderful work of fanfiction. I am seriously lamenting the loss of the "flightly temptress, adventure", "I am not worried...I am with you" and the "I am not a coward" lines among other things. Still, I hope that HBP kicks box office records down.Avatar ImageInai says: Wow, this is impressive~ and it definitely deserves it, it's such an amazing movie! Makes me happy to see it getting so much recognition already!Avatar Imagewoodersongal says: I knew it would do great last night. It sold out everywhere. It was so much fun going and knowing you were there with real die hard Harry Potter fans. But idk, just my opinion :)Avatar ImageWON_TWO says: Well done indeed... I cannot wait to see the weekend figures on Monday...Avatar ImageCandyCane2304 says: I'm going to try and see it again tomorrow. I saw it twice last night and won't have time today because of work. That's the only reason I'm waiting to tomorrow.Avatar Imageemmalinnankivi says: Omg awesome! But not at all surprising - the midnight showing I went to was INSANELY busy!Avatar Imageraven_puff says: That's amazing!! Go Harry! I can't wait to see this movie!! I wish I could have gone to a midnight showing!Avatar Imageaval says: woooh we won, waited in line for 4 hours, sooo worth it!Avatar Imagejrivas1284 says: I must say i am really happy to hear that.. not much surprise becuase is Harry Potter we talking about here. anyhow I cant wait to see it!! I am extremely excited......Avatar ImageRuall10scvols says: That's quite a stimulas package for theatre owners. Good show! Add to that the $4.5 trillion in popcorn sales (my own muggle-on-the-street estimate) and it adds up to one fab night of movie magic. Avatar ImageHermione_Granger1987 says: Go Harry!!!!Avatar ImageBritski says: Woot, go Harry Potter!Avatar ImageBlace_07 says: The movie was amazing! I'm really glad it is doing so well.Avatar ImageKimberlyZ says: That's the way we Harry Potter fans work! Avatar ImageKimberlyZ says: That's the way we Harry Potter fans work! Avatar ImageAerynYVTV says: Am I the *only * one who thought they absolutely butchered the story??? I mean (spoiler alert) they totally didn't even show the last battle in the castle, and the BURNED DOWN THE BURROW!!! What the #@#%$*&#$ was Steve Kloves thinking? The Elder Wand chilling in Dumbledore's office right after the attack, the lack of a tomb or funeral scene... gah the cast was the best they've been but the story seemed kind of incidental to me.Avatar Imagexlxcigaroxlx says: I personally was not happy....What was with Harry asking out that waitress????Avatar ImageWannabeWeasly says: at the theater i was at, they told us that they sold about 950 tickets in advance for Order of the Phoenix. for Half-Blood Prince, they sold 1800 tickets in advance, which is the biggest advance ticket sale they've ever had. so cool!Avatar ImageMugglejeff says: 22 million thats a great nightAvatar Imagegryffindor1991 says: wow! i wish i could have went at midnight. i hope i can go in the next few days.Avatar Imagepaulc says: Woohoo, just back from seeing the HBPAvatar Imagepaulc says: I went to a 16:00 showing here in Scotland. I was far more happy with this film than I was with OOTP!Avatar Imagefriendofblob says: didn't see that one coming. *rolls eyes*Avatar ImageMidnightSun321 says: dang it!!! thats a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot of money!!!Avatar ImageOrchidea15 says: Blooody hell! 22 million dollars?! There's no way twilight can compete with that, what are people thinking?!Avatar ImageOrchidea15 says: Blooody hell! 22 million dollars?! There's no way twilight can compete with that, what are people thinking?!Avatar Imageheir_of_slytherin says: I went to see this at the cinema earlier. They have a showing every 40 mins between 11am and 10pm but everyone has already sold out so I've had to book one for tomorrow.Avatar Imagepolyjusposhun says: And that is just for the ticket prices. : ) Judging by the amount of people standing next to me at the concession stand at just the one theater I was at, the theaters did really well on their sales too. I have often wondered, though, if they shouldn't be comparing the ticket sales between movies by a percentage rather than dollar number. Just as an example, I went to the midnight release of Twilight and the ticket price was only 4.95 (US dollars), but the showing I was at for HP last night was at the same theater, but cost twice as much. I am not sure if that is just due to rising ticket prices or what the studios establish as to what to charge, or if it is up to the theater to decide? I know the IMAX tickets will be even more than that, so when HP:HBP opens in wider release in IMAX the numbers will get even higher.Avatar ImageLuna Ravenclaw says: What's that they say? BEATS Dark Knight? YOU LOSE WB!!!!!Avatar Imageender650 says: It looks like they have revised the midnight gross up to 22 million. Looking good for breaking some records this weekend or at least getting very close.Avatar Imageangelvoice says: I'm so glad I went it was so worth waiting for.Avatar ImageJadeDanielle says: Oh my goodness! That's amazing!Avatar ImageJadeDanielle says: ender650, it's definitely looking that way, and I hope they manage it! Avatar Imagecarmenriots says: This movie was so AMAZING <3 YAY!Avatar ImageEmilyDeibert says: Woohoo! I waited outside my theatre from 2pm until midnight - and it was definitely worth it! I absolutely loved it!Avatar Imageweaselyfan says: this was the first time i had ever been a part of a potter "party" like this. it was awesome. thank you all of you who love harry like me.Avatar ImageAthenamalfoy says: Wow that is so great and insane to make 20mil but hey we waited that long for the movie what else is to be expected.Avatar Imagefan.numero1 says: I waited like three hours for the movie to start. it was totally woth the wait. now its my favorite moviee, very funny! And people were saying that Twilight was going to be much better, they can't even touch HBP! <33 IT!. Avatar ImageHermioneRon4ever says: Woa! That's awesome! I saw the movie last night (midnight) and it was great!!! LOVED IT!!!!!!!!Avatar ImageMosu says: i just came back from watching the movie and man they took out a LOT of things that they put int hr trialers like when they show ron and hermione looking out of the window and when ron tells harry good luck but then harry says "i dont need luck ill be with dumbledore". i bearly noticed that but omg they took out a lot of parts i was soo happy but now im disapointedAvatar ImageKohina says: !! I really can't wait to see this... I'm watching it next wednesday!Avatar ImageBriannaWazHere says: i need to see this movie!!! I wont be able to see it until Friday!!... im gona start cry *tries to hold self together*Avatar Imagegot2lovme says: wow! well i would assume it would be a lot knowing how much theaters were showing it.Avatar Imagesevpatronus_93 says: this movie was so good, despite the fact that they changed a whole lot, it's my favorite to date. i'm so happy i saw it at midnight. :DAvatar Imagesnorealot says: This was the 4th HP film I've viewed at the midnight release. This is also the only HP film that I don't like. The movie was so excruiatingly boring, that when Dumbledore died I didn't even care, I just wanted to leave - which is how the director must have felt because the ending just didn't stick. There were good parts, like Katie Bell's curse, but the good parts had more to do with visual effects and not acting or story. Bravo to Rupert Grint and the actor who plays Malfoy- they were amazing.Avatar Imagegingersnap188 says: and i helped!Avatar Imagelunarocks says: It was so fun seeing the movie with the biggest fans! They got the jokes and no one had to sit and explain what was happening! It was fun!Avatar Imagecghambright says: It was so AWESOME!! Seeing all the fans there!! So many people were dressed up and there was a funny moment when we were all waiting in the theater when someone dressed as a golden snitch came running in and all these people dressed up in uniforms got on their broomsticks and started chasing it around the auditorium. lmao. That was great! HP fans are the BEST!Avatar ImageFloridianFlounder95 says: Holy HELL! 22 Million DOLLARS?! Not Pesos or something? OMG! Our Fandom rules.Avatar ImageHermione Elizabeth says: Of course it was going to be a huge hit... it's been 2 years since the last one came out! And also, it is Harry Potter after all... he can do no wrong! :)Avatar ImageSpitFyre says: WOW!!!!! That is so freakin' awesome!!!!!! It beat star Wars???? That is amazing!!!Avatar Imagejoelface says: *happy dance*Avatar ImageSpitFyre says: WOW!!!!! That is so freakin' awesome!!!!!! It beat star Wars???? That is amazing!!!Avatar Imagesunlitdays says: my mom said that transformers got more. BOO!!! but OMG I HAVE SEEN HBP!!!!!! IHAVESEENHBPIHAVESEENHBPIHAVESEENHBPIHAVESEENHBP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Avatar Imagegirlatty1 says: we all knew rhis would happenAvatar Imagetayler18 says: thats great!! my money was apart of that 22 million! Avatar ImageShinyPineapple says: im not surprised at all i so saw this coming take that stupid muggle pple who think starwars and the dark night would last :) way 2 go harryAvatar ImageShinyPineapple says: im not surprised at all i so saw this coming take that stupid muggle pple who think starwars and the dark night would last :) way 2 go harryAvatar Imagemampersandy says: Great job, Harry! I love that this proves the fandom is stronger than ever :).Avatar ImageGret says: haha well that's awesome! :D Avatar ImageMosu says: omg i just remembered another scene that they took out like when harry and hermione are talking in the common room(that was shown in a picture) WHY DO THEY GIVE US PICS AND SHOW US CLIPS THAT ARE NOT GOING TO BE IN THE MOVIE? i have another 3, (r/hr moment went they try to see draco, r/hr looking out the window i guess after dumbledore dies, and when ron tells harry "good luck mate" and harry says "i dont need luck, ill be with dumbledore") maybe theyre deleted scenes but i needed to see them! i feel soo confused, im glad i saw it but idk im soo confused. i did feel soo bad when hermione was heartbroken i wanted to cry with her, but it took me a while to think of scenes they didnt putAvatar ImageMosu says: ohhhhhhhh and i think there was another one of the very first pic of HBP with harry and the HBP book, i dont remember seeing that in the movieAvatar ImageHPandtheDA007 says: well i hoped it would've done this well, with the time i had to wait in line and all. they will for sure be bringing in more money today as well.Avatar ImageKezzabear says: A number of pictures that came out are of angles we didn't get in the film, not that they weren't there. The first pic with Harry and the book is a shot of Dan when he walks in on a lovesick Ron - it's just the angle chosen for the movie is on Rupert, not Dan in the background you can see him out of focus in that pose. Likewise harry and hermione talking in teh common room and a shot of Harry and Ginny with Dumbledore's body - all scenes are in there just different angles only one was missing that I recall - the trio walking across a courtyard with Emma in a pink? top. Yates talks about that one being cut in a red carpet interview.Avatar Imageacciorusty says: And that's called Kicking Twilight's Ass!Avatar Imageharrypotter1991 says: HBP was awesome! I'm glad that it is breaking records! $22.2 million is a lot of money made in just a short amount of time! I'm interested in knowing how much money it would make by the end of this weekend! It might break more records!Avatar ImageFereverto says: Wow, that's an awesome start! I didn't get to see it at midnight, but I saw it this evening and I liked it a LOT. WB is going to get some more money from me because I MUST see it again. I may have missed something the first time. :)~Avatar Imagecauldronjane says: This news is not really shocking. Dedicated fans are everywhere and turn up to support the series. The gross earnings will definitely be a huge number.Avatar Imageharrmione55 says: I bought my ticket on Sunday (July 12) Premier ticket (Tuesday, July 14) was sold out in 3 theaters that was close to me, so I ended up buying July 15 ticket and I got the last 15 ticket. July 18 (which I will watch with my grand children) only a few was left for an early afternoon show. Mind you I'm talking about 3-4 cinema in a theater. Harry Potter is really big and most CHOSEN ONE! :)Avatar Imageharrmione55 says: OH BTW I'll say it again, they cut the part in the book when Harry gave Hermione, Ginny and Ron the Felix Felicis and the battle inside the Hogwarts students/teachers and death eaters when Draco filled the ground with black smoke. I really want to see that and it wasn't there. :(Avatar Imagedakota1084 says: That is fantastic. I, myself, saw it at midnight and saw it later on again on opening day. I think this just shows how loyal fans truly are to Harry Potter. Avatar ImageGryfindorprincess09 says: I was one of the one waiting for 2.5 hrs outside the theater last night but it was so worth it. I want to see it at least 2 more times.Avatar Imagemobellatrix says: I was out there too got my tickets online weeks ago I LOVED IT SO MUCH CAN'T WAIT FOR IT TO COME OUT ON DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Avatar Imagealegria35 says: wooohooo... just saw it, and it was awesome!.. to the nth degree of awesomeness... SQUEE!!Avatar Imagealegria35 says: I loved the scene where Hermione is crying on Harry's shoulder. I really felt it, that they are two persons in-love with a person they could not express their love to.Avatar ImageRavenbear says: go potter fansAvatar ImageNot Slytherin says: That's fantastic!!! Potter!!! :o)Avatar Imagemaryjoie says: well of course.. what are you expecting? the least? oh come on.. it's really a job well done.. way to go harry potter.. Avatar ImageRaveKatie says: I wasn't surprised, I knew we 'd be breaking records again, we always do! And Warner Bros. got what they wanted, more monies. And we got what we wanted! An awesome movie to watch together in one night! :DAvatar ImageNoella_Mansrot says: HAHAHA! Darn right!Avatar Imagex_Potter_Lover_Forever_x says: *WOW!* That's awesome. Go Potter ---- (it's because we had to wait so long!) Avatar Imagemegan_702 says: Well done HP!!!! I thought the movie was AMAZING! Except my sister thought it was ok and so did my friend and I was like, OMG??? JUST OK??? Avatar ImageKiralay says: Horray for dedicated fans everywere!
