In case you missed our reminder post yesterday, tonight will see the J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life documentary broadcast on ABC at 8:00pm (Eastern). As noted by the NY Daily News, this airing of the 2007 documentary ” which was filmed by James Runcie, inserts voiceovers by Elizabeth
Vargas doesn’t update the narrative, however, or tie it to the new
movie, so it often plays more like a slice of recent pop-culture
history than a news special.” id=”TixyyLink” style=”border: medium none ; overflow: hidden; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;”>
Perhaps of interest to fans might be this offering on the Travel Channel of a 2001 documentary called “Discovering te Real World of Harry Potter.” Narrated by the delightful Hugh Laurie (House), this piece features some rare interview footage of J.K. Rowling and more as witnessed by this trailer on YouTube. Discovering the Real World of Harry Potter airs tonight on the cable channel at 10:00pm Eastern.

It comes on in 20mins and im definitly watching it.Avatar Imagecghambright says: Yay!! I can't wait to see it! The documentary is soo good! I"m so excited!Avatar Imagecghambright says: And AWESOME! I'm totally watching the Travel channel documentary too! So cool! Maybe I will go see the movie again after they go off!Avatar Imagelutherjw says: "inserts voiceovers by Elizabeth Vargas" Ugh. I'm glad I still have a copy of the documentary from when it aired in Britain. It might just be me being pessimistic, but the way the film was shot doesn't exactly lend itself to added voiceover and I'm afraid Elizabeth Vargas' comments might ruin the flow of the movie...Avatar Imagesessionka says: Thank God I got on to check my email. I would have missed it. Setting up the VCR now (Yes it's what I still use).Avatar ImageAccioAmanda says: I just got home, I missed most of it... Will there be a re-airing of it?Avatar Imagechingmcc says: Wow, I'm watching A Year in the Life right now. It is very interesting. But I can already tell that the hour will come up too soon and I will want it to continue. It is well shot and very frank and honest portrayal, I think. I never knew that she based dementors on her own depression expereinces but it makes perfect sense, because when I read about their description, I thought about how truly horrible that is to live wihtout hope or happiness and to feel that you will never be happy again. Avatar Imagepotterprincess888 says: I'm in Canada, what time does this come on?Avatar ImageHPNAIV says: I like the other version of A Year in the Life better. This one was nice too... but I liked the other one more. Still made me cry though. ): Makes you appreciate Jo and the books... makes you love them even more!Avatar ImageNot Slytherin says: I agree with lutherjw ... the inserted comments just might bug the crap out of me.Avatar ImagexAnaheyy says: lol the inserted voices werent that bad. ughhh ; i missed the 1st 15 min of it, but i recorded the rest ! >< i hope they'll air it again ! :/Avatar ImagexAnaheyy says: lol the inserted voices werent that bad. ughhh ; i missed the 1st 15 min of it, but i recorded the rest ! >< i hope they'll air it again ! :/Avatar ImageJadeDanielle says: I actually remembered to watch it! It was quite fun to watch on my own tv. Unfortunately, the host was a bit irritating. I think it would have been more fun to watch if they'd left that out! I'll be sure to watch that show on the Travel channel, thanks for mentioning it!Avatar Imagebella vita says: I agree with lutherjw. I'm watching it right now. I watched the original version back in 2007 online and I enjoyed it much more as it was then without that half-wit Elizabeth Vargas's pointless commentary and presence. To be honest I really wish she'd just f--- off and shut it. Sorry, but it annoys me that unlike the original her commentary over-exagerrates and over-dramatizes every single word Jo said. I really enjoyed the original and was so excited to finally watch it on my TV until I realized it wasn't being aired in its original format. ABC just had to go and screw up a great documentary by adding their own unnecessary BS to it.Avatar ImageWON_TWO says: It was great... Jo was so awesome...Avatar Imagebpowell170 says: Well, I was disappointed in ABC's packaging of it. I'm sure the actual footage by James Runcie was nipped and tucked to fit into the allotted time, too -- I remember seeing a scene or two of the original documentary. Why in the world couldn't ABC just have shown the documentary as Runcie intended it to be viewed, instead of chopping it to bits and ruining it? Very disappointing to those of us on this side of the pond ...Avatar ImageDlcohm7 says: I miss Jo so much, doesn't everyone else? She is our Harry Mom. I can't wait till we hear she is starting to write the 'Scottish book' aka Encyclopedia. I almost forgot. I cried during this show. I loved it. Remembered all the wait we had.And I'm watching the travel channel at 10pm for the harry's world thing. Saw it before, love it.Avatar ImageMugglejeff says: just watched and it was really goodAvatar ImageDlcohm7 says: Yeah, I agree too. Thank God for you tube. Everyone can show us the full version. Why can't they show it to us here. Still good though. But lots of looking at on you tube now im sure.So who is seeing HP6 tom or sat again? Me! Even tho I am mad at many parts cut out.Avatar Imageques says: I wish they showed the original. Vargas felt disingenuous, and it seemed like they cut things.Avatar ImageLinduh_Radcliffe says: NOOOOO that means I've missed it in PST! >.< The previous post DID NOT mention if 8:00 was EST or PST ><Avatar Imagelutherjw says: While this was still an okay version, it wasn't nearly as compelling as the original. The way it was edited and re-arranged, and Vargas' annoying voice (seemingly reading exactly what Runcie said in the British version) were just plain annoying. It's a shame, really, that American viewers were deprived of the superior version. I really wish they had just aired it as it was originally intended.Avatar ImageSybilT says: I saw it and thought it was excellent, even the commentary. I won't go into sdetails, but I found that I have a lot in common with JKR. I only wish that her kind of talent were one!Avatar ImageCourtneyPotter says: watched them both!!! :DAvatar Imagesuzieqosu says: There was really no need for Elizabeth Vargas to talk at all. It's a good thing I saw the original, because I would have been disappointed if tonight's airing was my one chance. Way to almost totally ruin a good thing, ABC.Avatar Imagegryffindor1991 says: I watched it and it was very informational. It was interesting it was comprised of things i knew and things i didnt.Avatar Imagegryffindor1991 says: I missed the thing on the travel channel. im staying up until 2 to watch it.Avatar Imagepunkedup88 says: Guys, you're being too critical of the American version. Even though I got annoyed by it, it didn't "ruin" the documentary. I bet if you hadn't seen the original one, you would ignore her and enjoy Jo.Avatar ImageMera004 says: I had my brother record it for me since I had work! Can't wait to see it (I didn't see it when it aired in the UK). :) But aw man, I'm sad that I missed the Travel Channel one. I love Hugh Laurie, too! Will it ever air again? Or does anyone know where I could watch it? Avatar Imagesiriuslyamanda says: I watched it tonight! :)Avatar ImageGret says: I'm so excited for this! My friend tivo'ed it so we can watch it this weekend (we were too busy tonight) and I am VERY excited! ♥ Avatar Imageariana_dumbledore says: This was very much worth watching!Avatar ImageMera004 says: Ooh, it's coming on again at 2am (the Travel channel one). I'm going to record it. :) Avatar Imagegryffindorgurll says: aw i missed it! :(Avatar ImageAndygirl14 says: It was really well done! I enjoyed watching it!Avatar Imagegreatpetie83 says: The A Year in the Life will also be shown today Friday 17th in the Netherlands on Nederland 2 at 22:40Avatar ImageCatherine says: watched it loved it!! have it recorded! xxAvatar ImageLulaL says: A Year in the Life was great. Jo, you're invited for tea. Just name a time and place.Avatar ImageLulaL says: I'll have to find track down a rerun on Discovering the Real World of HP.Avatar Imagegirlatty1 says: After all I heard about this program I was glad to finally see it.Avatar Imagefireboltfire says: OMG I think I have just stuck Harry Potter gold!!! Today me and some friends went to London and we stumbled upon a place along the Southbank called the Movieum!! It has got to be the coolest place that I have been to London!! Not only has it got like millions of really coool stuff from loads of different films- I got to play with light sabers  but there are HARRY POTTER STUFF!!!! Like OMG I have officially seen THE nimbus 2000 and Ron’s beautifully battered wand (i nearly squealed when I saw this!!!) There were Harry, Ron and Hermione costumes from all different films – Ron’s little knitted R jumper was there, which I just wanted to break the glass and wear! And the tri-Wizard cup was bestowed upon us too, shame we couldn’t lift it up as if we were Harry for real! It really made me and my friends feel as though we were behind the scenes in the wizarding world! I toddled off a happy girlie, fulfilled in my magical Potter moment. Next place to find is Diagon alley – any suggestions to where I can find that??? So how comes no one has ever posted something about this aaaaaamazing place before?????? Avatar ImageRaveKatie says: omg yay! I love hugh laurie more than anything! He's brilliant as House. :DAvatar Imagesinwillys822 says: i am sorry to say i don't have cable so i missed it, maybe it will be online soon and then i can see it.Avatar ImageMidnightSun321 says: awesum :)Avatar ImageHagrid 713 says: Good to see Jo & finishing DHAvatar ImageGTHunter says: whatever...another Jo Rowling life story? *sigh*Avatar Imageminishiva says: I criedwhen she went back to her old apartment. The forest of Dean is great.Avatar Imagenine9isfine says: Well, GTHunter certainly isn't a fan :-/ Avatar Imagelevi-OH-sa not levio-SA says: i have it on my dvr waiting for the weekendAvatar ImageHermione Elizabeth says: I just wanted to say that I saw the special last night and it was really good! :)Avatar ImageHP United says: This was on in December 2007, I recorded it. I saw this, so I decided to rewatch it. I love JK Rowling, she truly is remarkable ^__^Avatar Imagedoublecore says: Imissed it does anybody know if it will reair or rebroadcast anytime soon :(Avatar ImageProfessor Skrewt says: Seeing Jo in tears in her old apartment, the one in which she began to write Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone during the most difficult time in her life, I thought to myself, "This is the woman who wrote so eloquently about the death of Dobby." She seemed very much in touch with her feelings from that period, and obviously is able to transmute them into great character portraits in the books.Avatar ImageCatherine_R_Williams says: Jo... You really didn't have to share anything yet you had and I am thankful!Avatar ImageCatherine_R_Williams says: doublecore...Go to this Youtube page http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1l4WYk4aQ4&NR=1 Please please please don't anyone delete it from youtube. Anyone who missed it can watch it in 8 parts on the youtube website. ____________________________________________________ You wrote: I missed it does anybody know if it will reair or rebroadcast anytime soon :( Posted by doublecore on July 17, 2009, 05:06 PM Avatar Imagehewy says: To lutherjw you are absolutely correct! Her voiceover did nothing and probably detracted from the length of the original and speaking of the original how in the blue blazes did you get a copy of the original and how can the rest of us??????Avatar Imageslwarren says: The rare glimpse into Jo's life was amazing. It must be so difficult to balance personal life and "celebrity" when your work puts you into the public light. The only thing that I didn't like was Mr. Runcie asking Jo how much money she has made. I'm so glad that she politely refused to divulge the information and telling him that it's private. it's really no one else's business how much she's made. The amount of joy and pleasure she's given the world with the Harry universe cannot be quantified in terms of money alone anyway.Avatar ImageAgrippa1 says: I agree, lutherjw - I wish I had the original version. I thought Elizabeth Vargas's comments just interrupted the flow - and some of them made it clear that she didn't get the books! Sigh - why do TV bigwigs think Americans need extra "dumbing down" of British documentaries??Avatar ImageHPandtheDA007 says: i watched this last night and loved it. very entertaining and loved learning more about Jo's life. i'll be watching it again tonight along with the Travel channel documentaryAvatar Imagehewy says: Agrippa1 every thing is being dumbdown for us as the general media and others think we a bunch of brainless gits and not able to understand the English language. Avatar Imagejim32809 says: I can't believe I missed these... totally bummed out.Avatar ImageHollyLime says: I thought it was good but I could have done without the american narrator. She talked way too much and it was mostly useless information. I also didn't appreciate that a year in the life of JK Rowling, a vitally important year that is, was boiled down to about 43 minutes worth of footage. Surly there is more valuable video from this year out there somewhere. Will we ever get a chance to see the year more in its entirety?Avatar ImageMuggle-Born-Witch says: I MISSED IT! :-\ I was busy, and i missed it.. Did anyone record it...and can post it online? It would be fabulous! MBWAvatar ImageCrazedMuggle says: It's all on youtube to anyone who missed it :)Avatar Imageempressa says: thanks for the info, crazedmuggle. i got a chance to watch it but, would love to see it again.Avatar ImagePhylis says: I enjoyed watching the documentary. There is a lot of JK in her books.Avatar ImageEllanalida says: I watched it last night, and while I wasn't totally bothered by the additional commentary, I was bothered by the quality of its recording. The recording of the additional commentary was poorly done, with the audio full of noise and sometimes even difficult to properly hear. The quality of commentary didn't match up to the rest of the documentary's quality. Avatar Imagekleigh629 says: I forgot about the documentary airing last night, but luckily some wonderful souls have posted it on youtube.com, so I was able to watch it today. I was moved to tears by Jo's reactions to seeing her old apartment, it's obvious that despite her fame and fortune, Jo is a down-to-earth mum who just loves to write and got very lucky in creating Harry and his world. Bless her and I look forward to anymore stories she has to write.Avatar ImageHPandtheDA007 says: I had to re watch it again on youtube and this time found someone who uploads bit by bit the UK version with more additional information. they went more in depth with the family trees and just seeing her and her down to earth side is an inspiration for anyone. Congrats Jo and everything you've accomplished and may the best work out for your future projects.Avatar ImageRavenclaw98 says: insterstingAvatar Imagebiswajit says: wow...... greatAvatar Imagehermyone08 says: i enjoyed this immensely
