A followup today regarding the legal case involving actor Jamie Waylett (Crabbe), who earlier this month plead guilty to growing cannabis plants at a residence in London, England. Today, the AP reports that Jamie was sentenced to to 120 hours of community service. The report continues: Judge Timothy Workman said Tuesday that he accepted that the cultivation was on a small scale and for Waylett’s own use. He said the actor had been, “until now, a man of good character.”
UPDATE: The BBC has more now on the matter, including a message from Jamie: “Leaving the court, Waylett said: “I extend my sincere apologies to the
producers, cast and crew and all at Warners and most especially to all
Harry Potter fans.”

Avatar ImageEnricoDc says: I wish, His case will be Ok and He will realize what he did is wrong. I can't accept if his character in (Final) HP films will be portray by another actor... His character is too important in the Finale...Avatar ImageEnricoDc says: By the way, Today is his Birthday... So Happy Birthday to him! =)Avatar ImageFlora Lovegood says: I think this is a great birthday present! I thought it was sad that the trial was scheduled on his b-day. Community service will be good... i think that punishment should be used for minor offenders more often. It benefits everyone far more than unproductive incarceration. And yes! he has to be in DH! I was glad he was going to finally get more than 2 lines in ascene! :)Avatar Imageelaphantluv34 says: Happy Birthday to Jamie. I think this is a good "punishment" for what he did. Not only will he be helping the communtiy, he will also be helping himself by realizing that what he did wasn't the smartest option he could have chosen.Avatar ImageOldMrToad says: I hate it when negative news shows up about 'our' folks. I hope Jamie will make the best of the mercy of the judge. OMTAvatar ImageNiphai says: I'm really happy he doesn't have to go to jail, not only cause he's an HP actor, but I think this kind of 'crime' isn't something you should go to jail for (maybe that's because of soft drugs is legal here in the Netherlands). Anyway, I'm glad he can still shoot the DH scenes <3Avatar ImageiLoveDolores says: i think its so sad to see a young actor go down the wrong path. he will find his way again :DAvatar ImageAgrippa1 says: I think that's a fair sentence, given Britain's laws - and it doesn't punish HP fans, because he can still be in the movies. What's really interesting to American fans is that he's the only young HP actor who's gotten caught doing anything "improper" or illegal. Here, our child actors get so much attention and so little maturing time that they grow up to be spoiled, thinking the world revolves around them. When they reallize it doesn't (and never did), too many of them get caught for drug involvement, drunk driving, outrageous public behavior - it's sad. But with the HP kids, it's only this one who's been caught doing anything reprehensible - and only on a very small scale! Way to go, Hogwarts students! (and Dudley, as a matter of fact!)Avatar ImageNeil in Scotland says: A good outcome. I just hope this will get him back on to the straight and narrow.Avatar ImageBellatrixGranger says: happy bday to Jamie i hope to see him in the final films! go slytherins!Avatar ImageCarol Carvalho says: He is very lucky! Still hope he doesn't come back thought.... but maybe it is just me...Avatar Imagevandy says: Happy Birthday Jamie!!!!!!! Really glad that the punishment wasn't severe.. He will be able to help the community atleast...Avatar ImageRavenclaw98 says: That wasnt that bad.Avatar ImageMobius says: Complete and utter crap. Nice to see the UK is just as uncivilized as the US when it comes to pot. I say give him a medal.Avatar ImageCaracticus says: Good that the knife charge wasn't on him... if it was, I'd have a hard time saying "what's the big deal" like I say about simple "pot" possession.Avatar ImageJoost says: I hope he will still be able to supply his fellow cast members!Avatar Imagebengtson_98 says: First, Happy Birthday.. Second it's a shame to see him go down the wrong path.. as so many of them do now days.. I hope he learns from this experience and doesn't have a drug filled futureAvatar Imagemoglet says: I am glad that he got community service and not imprisonment but having broken the law he is not actually going to be very available for filming while doing that community service, they have a schedule to keep to and would not have held up any part of it to wait for the outcome of all this, so I think you may find that he will not be back for the final films.Avatar Imageminishiva says: He is lucky.I hope he learns from his mistakes.Avatar Imageis.this.real says: hmmmmmm............there wasn't a witch or wizard who went bad that wasn't in slytherin...................Avatar ImagePaintTheSky says: Wow he got off pretty lucky with just 120 hours. Some schools in higher education will require you do double that, and that's not even a punishment! lol hope he can shoot the DH scenesAvatar ImagePaintTheSky says: @moglet, if he's lucky he can get all of it done relatively quickly. If he does 40 hrs/wk that's just 3 weeks, even 20 hrs. is just 6.Avatar ImageAtticus says: I wonder how many people slamming him for Marijuana cultivation actually looked into the supposed "negative" effects of it. Marijuana causes zero deaths per year, whereas alcohol claims over 175,000 lives per year and Tobacco over 500,000. Educate yourselves, people. As for Jamie Waylett, I'm glad he wasn't given prison time. I can't help but find the delicious irony in the justice system - "drugs will ruin your life, so to help you we'll ruin your life by putting you into prison". I'm sure he'll get his community service over and done with before his big scene in Deathly Hallows starts filming.Avatar ImageMartinisthechosenone says: happy birthday jamie hope you re back for deathly hallows:DAvatar ImageMoose_Starr says: I really hope that Jamie can step back and move on from here. He's a great guy & it would be too bad to throw it all away. In response to the comments suggesting some of us should educate ourselfs, the discussion isnt about the good or bad effects of drugs. The fact is, it's against the law. Personally, I dont like drugs of any kind (however uncool that may make me) so, it always gets to me when I hear of someone getting busted for it. It's good to see Jamie did say something to his fans. He has so much love & respect from his fans, and he's a movie star in the Potterverse, it would be too bad to throw it all away. I hope he can move on from this. Avatar ImageZoeyLuna says: Happy Birthday, Jamie! Try playing video games instead to relax. It's much better for you. Just as long as you stay away from World of Warcraft -- trust me on that one!Avatar ImageLuce_depp says: Well that's cool. At least he'll be around for the movies and he's sorry for what he did/getting caught.Avatar ImageLuce_depp says: @is.this.real? that's best line i've heard all day! hahahaAvatar ImageDylanAqua says: Will he be in DH then?Avatar Imagedoublecore says: The law is the law and thas it. He should say he is sorry to all the fans of HP. Somtimes in life you need to make the right choices and he made a wrong one. He will do his sentence and it will be over. Avatar ImageJewunit says: They should keep him, but he needs to do his time with CS.Avatar ImageMarieMoM says: Glad he just got community service, which is actually an all-around good thing. There are so many other things he could have done that would deserve much worse punishment. But I'll keep the rest of my opinions to myself =)Avatar Imagegryffindor1991 says: Thats good that he doesnt have to spend time in jail. I wonder iif that means he'll be in DH. I hope they let him be because it would be stupid if someone else had to play him. They cant leave him out because his part is a little bigger in DH2 than it normally is.Avatar ImageLloyd says: Well that's a relief!Avatar ImageScottMan says: LOL Joost! Funny. :) I wonder how many other Harry Potter cast and crew members have used pot. I suppose the real tragedy is he got caught with it and was made a spectacle of. With Dan Radcliffe and Michael Gambon both smoking cigarettes (and likely Emma though I don't know if she gave it up, probably not), and really all of them drinking alcohol, I suppose pot is the least he could do. Heh. I just have this very real image of the end of the day, Emma Watson sitting down and slouching in her chair with a martini in one hand and a cigarette in the other, and letting out a huge fart.Avatar Imagemoglet says: I knew I'd read something which led me to believe Jamie would not be in DH and here it is: "Tomorrow we're shooting the scene in the Room of Requirement, where Harry Ron and Hermione are being chased by Fiendfyre and its a very cool scene.' " a quote from David Yates in Total Film magazine. This news report was posted on July 1st, it looks likely therefore that Jamie is not going to be in the film.Avatar ImageScrodius says: Has ANYONE noticed that this kid got nailed because he filmed some police out in public? He was searched based on anti-terrorism laws! What about two kids using a camera prompts terrorism suspicions? Sounds to me like who ever arrested him had a hair across their ass as well as very nice and abusive power trip. Now this kid has to pay out in public because of that. Does anyone else see how wrong that is?!!Avatar Imagemoglet says: Well he wouldn't have been in trouble if he hadn't had what is an illegal drug on him, I am not saying it is right he was searched for that particular reason, but he must know it is against the law to have the drug. There was always a risk that he would be found out one day, what with growing it at home, I have to say I can't figure out how his family didn't put a stop to that, surely they should have noticed the plants. I think he has just been a little foolish and hopefully will learn from this, and never get involved in drugs again. I wish him well and hope he will be able to put this behind him and have a successful career.Avatar Imagemoglet says: Just read the report, and I see Jamie didn't have any drugs on him, just pictures of them on his camera, but his friend did have drugs. I am glad to read the statement Jamie made apologising to the fans and the film makers, he has accepted that what he did was wrong and hopefully that will set him on the right path now.Avatar ImageBell Dema says: Go, Jamie! Smoke on! Pot is good for you, much better than tobacco. Avatar ImageScrodius says: Right path nothing! What is unjust is unjust. I could see searching him if there was any real indication, but TERRORISM?!!! It's just another excuse to erode your privacy and rights. Why don't you all just have cameras installed on your heads so the authorities can make sure you don't make one step left or right too many?Avatar ImageParkinsonpansy says: i hope he will be in deathly hallows.Avatar ImageWON_TWO says: Well, cleaning out some hospital bedpans for 1/2 a month sure beats being locked up with real criminals for lord knows how long.... Thank goodness for judges... If it were up to the police or prosecutors, he would be in Azkaban right now!Avatar ImageCalynthe says: Hopefully he's learned his lesson.Avatar ImageGTHunter says: lol at his misery... But why are they yelling at him for pot use and not Phelps? And why does he have to grow it? Why not just grab it from some dealer?? This actor = stupidAvatar ImageFlonk says: All this talk about the "wrong" path... Make up your own mind about what's right and wrong! He didn't grow it for profit. As long as he only consumes it himself, what's the big deal? We could be worried about his health, but nothing more. Breaking laws isn't necessarily a bad thing - we can even learn that from Potter. Avatar ImageFlonk says: ... plus I'm saying that as someone who has never ever broken the law (except red traffic lights) or taken drugs (except alcohol). Avatar ImageBad-Muggle says: He got off light, here in the states he would be hauled off to jail in a heart beat for this. Hope this gives him a bit of a wake up call, and hope it doesn't effect his career. Avatar Imagesiriusly_devoted says: Man you really have to watch it when you are in the public eye like that!Avatar ImageDiamondWings says: I can't believe this!!!Avatar ImageWingardium Leviosa says: The sentence is good and benefits everyone. I'm hoping he will be in the next films, Crabbe has an important role.Avatar ImageGiant Fairy says: Not that I don t want him back in DH2, but I think it "really helps to be around the Chosen One" to convince a judge that seweral bags of MaryJane are just for his own supply....(bet the judge was Slytherin, too)Avatar ImageStarlysh says: I'm really relieved that he won't have to go to jail for like, 14 years. I hope that he is still able to film scenes for DH, if they're including any with him. Avatar Imageccking says: is he still even in the films ??Avatar ImageMugglejeff says: Hope he is back in the last two movies. Avatar ImageVoodooPadfoot says: Heehee, I have a friend who got the same amount of hours for streaking... don't ask! Avatar ImageToriWeasley says: Thats NOT cool. I hope that none other of the harry potter fans do something like this. its a shame. :[Avatar ImageNuttyAsSP says: "Dude, you got any more of those Bertie Botts?" or "Should have saw this coming, only he and Neville got an 'Outstanding' at OWL level Herbology". or "Draco, the Dark Lord is a medieval dork-weed." (Side note, I have only smoked a tobacco cigar, and only one time. I do not promulgate illegal drug use. I just can't believe no one has had fun with this.)Avatar ImageNuttyAsSP says: Change that to "Should have seen"Avatar Imagebudgie says: I hope he keeps legal going forward. I think pot should be regulated as behavior under the influence like alcohol. A quiet eveing at home or even out should be no problem, but laws aren't written that way right now. Laws are written by people, and can be changed by enough people. Until then, I am glad nothing worse will happen.Avatar ImageHPNAIV says: Hmm... no comment. He could have done something worse though?Avatar Imagex_Potter_Lover_Forever_x says: Don't get me wrong I think it's good that he didn't get in *MAJOR* trouble. But would a "normal" person have got the same. Justice? :/ Avatar Imagemynameisbrock says: oh its those brits what do you expect ha ;)Avatar ImageJadeDanielle says: I think this is a good sentence. I have no opinion on smoking pot either way - I don't think it's horrible, but I don't encourage it - I do think that since it IS illegal, it was quite stupid of him, someone in one of the biggest film franchises, to do it. :\Avatar Imagedangflabbit says: wow if your famous you can get away with anything!! how is it that Jamie Waylett "the star" only got community service while the normal person, wrong as his crimes were got a custodial sentence! Good to see justice is thriving in Britain! I wish they don't use him in the last film, he does not deserve it!Avatar ImageHermione Elizabeth says: I hope that he learned something from this....Avatar ImageScrodius says: It baffles me to no end that so many people think the kid shouldn't work anymore because he had some weed in his closet. THAT'S IT HIS LIFE IS OVER! Might as well put him out on the streets so he can feel hopeless about everything and do MORE illegal things because he is left with no alternative. I hope you people accidentally hit someone with a car and end up having no job, after all you wouldn't deserve a place in life anymore, filthy murdering castaways!Avatar ImageFereverto says: Ummm, he's 20, which, though young, is not a kid. I think his sentence is fair for a first offense of this kind. I just hope he's not silly enough to do it again. As for DH, they change things around so much that who knows who starts the fiend fire and if it kills anybody at all. When they go so far off the book as to burn the burrow to the ground, you never know what the next film will hold.Avatar ImageScrodius says: Splitting hairs doesn't make my point invalid. It doesn't really matter if I perceive him as a child. The point is that people do not deserve to be cast aside for such things.Avatar ImageLinnyish says: Poor Jamie. I hope his family are alright and coping well with it all. The judge seems to have been pretty fair and Jamie appears to be handling the situation well. I wouldn't be surprised if WB had swooped in to make sure that everything was hastily taken care of.Avatar ImageLavendergirl says: Happy birthday Jamie! Wish you luck!Avatar Imagelisajean65 says: I hope he has learned his lesson.Avatar Imagepunkedup88 says: I think the punishment fit the crime. For those of you who say he got off to easy while his friend didn't, they both got in trouble. The only reason why he didn't get into too much was because the knife. I would sentence someone who was doing drugs and had a weapon longer too. Frankly this was hyped up too much. Happy Birthday Jamie, today was a good day with a good sentence. I'm going to kick my friend who swore to me that he got 17 years. What the crap.Avatar Imagemcleod27 says: They seized his camera for taking pictures of police as they drove by? And that is considered terrorist activity? I do have to say, growing 10 plants in your mom's house is no genious move. And taking pictures and carrying the camera around with you is another dopey move. Hmm...ya think that's why they call it dope.Avatar ImageSwedishSkinJer says: Don't worry, people. It was only for Herbology class at Hogwarts.Avatar Imagecghambright says: Thank Goodness...he better learn from this! I mean it makes sense for him not to be sentenced to 14 years in prison. He's YOUNG and up to that point he hasn't been in any trouble and he's actually been doing something good with his life. I don't know why he all of a sudden decided to grow pot, but I really hope he learns from this mistake. Avatar Imagepolyjusposhun says: I hope he does take this seriously as a wake up call that this is not the way his life should be going. I really hope that his experiences with the fans has not been such that they are mean to him because he is playing a bad character. I am sure he is not getting the kind of attention and popularity that the other actors get, but I personally am fond of his portrayal of this character and hope he would get to finish out the movies - and turn his life around to positive endevors. I think the magic of movies, plays, concerts or any group project is that all the people in the group are working toward a common goal and when it works (as brilliantly as HP has done) everyone walks away a little bit better for having been part of that type of experience. I hope he finds that in his work. : ) Avatar Imageabandonedboyjon says: I have a feeling they won't have him back, but I hope this means he will be in dh. and for all those saying you hope he realizes he did wrong and all that, even the judge said it was for personal use, with no intent to distribute. so unless you're going to pass judgement on jamie's personal life, you have to admit there's very little malevolency in this case. Avatar Imageoldenoughtoknowbetter says: Glad all worked out for Jamie. I am glad he'll be able to be in DH, no one else could ever be Crabbe! Avatar Imagemalcolm1980 says: IMO, he shouldn't even BE punished in the first place. He's an adult. If he wants to grow his own weed and smoke it, it should be his freakin' business. Avatar ImageJuleBule says: @ZoeyLuna: And what's wrong with World of Warcraft, if I may ask? ;-)Avatar ImageRoman says: I think it was a just sentence and I hope that his statement to the press was sincere. He can use this as a point to straighten his life out and make a better life for himself.Avatar ImageAwakened says: This was hyped up too much, in my opinion. Just goes to show yet again when you gain any type of celebrity status you pretty much lose privacy. Glad he didn't get the maximum sentence.Avatar ImageNot Slytherin says: Way to set a good example, Kid.Avatar ImageBoyWithALightningScar says: He's no saint, he's just human. And it's not like he's a cocaine or heroin junkie, is it?Avatar Imagelevi-OH-sa not levio-SA says: well glad it's almost over, it is really not that big a deal, i'm sure if it had something to do with the trio, it would have exploded more lolAvatar Imagehermionenluna TZS ROAR! says: wow Avatar ImageTigger says: "Breaking laws isn’t necessarily a bad thing" - err, yes it is's not like we live in evil unfair dictatorship, there's no huge pressing need to break laws like this. We can't be sure why he did it, but I doubt it had anything to do with fighting for freedom, democracy and life as we know it :P It wasn't a serious crime, so he didn't get a serious punishment. It's irrelevant whether you, personally, agree with the law or not...if you do something that's illegal and you get caught, then you'll be punished. It was dumb of him to do what he did, but kudos to him for accepting the responsibility and the consequences. Hopefully everyone will forget this soon :) lolAvatar ImagetaystarHP says: We all knew the secret of Crabbe anyways. Ok seriously, that is awful. I can't believe it.Avatar Imagemaimiaa says: what's a bit of trouble. geez. XDAvatar Imagechanman says: oh no not community service!Avatar ImageSindi says: i couldn't believe he had done it ... Avatar ImageMidnightSun321 says: i dnt think its enough. the average person would probably be sent to prison. and he shouldnt be allowed to film DH. i want him to but i dnt think he should.Avatar Imageseve774 says: YEAH esta hablando del fasooooo :DAvatar ImageR-for-H says: Well at least it wasn't that bad..,.Avatar Imagehermyone08 says: hopefully everything will turn out okay for him thenAvatar ImageSquibmeister says: Typical Slytherin...Avatar ImageLivelaughlovepotter says: So will he be in the seventh movie....?Avatar ImageWON_TWO says: He got off easy...Avatar ImageJTEL99 says: I'm glad he doesn't have to go to jail. I think he has been "punished" alot already because of all of the negative press that he has gotten. This has probably been quite the learning experience for him.
