Variety: Dan Radcliffe to Return to Broadway in a Musical

Some possible big news this morning as Variety is reporting that “Daniel Radcliffe: will head the cast of an upcoming New York reading of 1961 tuner “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” marking the first musical turn for the “Harry Potter” star. The industry magazine then says “While producers could not be reached for confirmation, the reading is
scheduled for December, with no other cast so far in place. Sources
said plans for the production will be worked out based on the success
of the reading.”

Some background on the awarding winning musical is found in the Variety piece: “Written by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser,
“How to Succeed” chronicles the rise of a crafty window cleaner as he
follows the advice of a self-help manual to connive his way up through
the ranks of the World Wide Wickets Co. and get the girl in the process. Robert Morse created the role on Broadway and in the 1967 screen adaptation. The
original production won seven Tonys, including musical, as well as the
Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1962, running for a healthy 1,417
performances. Matthew Broderick won a Tony for the lead role in a 1995 Rialto revival.

that recent production might make it seem a little soon to start
considering a major remount, the current economic turmoil, upheaval in
the job market, and a host of fresh reasons to skewer the world of
corporate America stand to make the cynical comedy resonate with
today’s audiences.”

Please note, as exciting as this sounds, we are working to get confirmation on this and will update as soon as we can, stay tuned!

Thanks Gabrielle!

Avatar ImageJane_Potter says: I really want to hear him singing. Let's hope he sounds good lol!!!Avatar Imagemadrassnuff says: cooleoAvatar Imagepotterforpresident says: He sings? Wow, didn't know that. :)) I'm excited already!Avatar Imagesimos says: What !Avatar ImageLuce_depp says: wowcan singing...i always heard him say he thinks he's a horrible singer...afte December boys i kind of agreed hahah maybe he'll be awesome after lessonsAvatar ImagePrincess Leia says: Oh I love this musical! And I would love to see Dan do something so drastically different!Avatar ImageCarol Carvalho says: The question in everyone minds is "Can he sing?"... i think nobody really know. It is one thing to be able to sing in a movie or a gathering of friends, a whole other to carry a broadway musical... I think that is what they mean in the article when they say: "plans for the production will be worked out based on the success of the reading." Let's face... these people who sing at broadway shows are huge singers... Good luck to Dan! I'm sure he is going to train his ass off if he wants the part! Avatar Imagemoondragon15 says: does dan sing?Avatar ImageDespina says: So that's why he was learning to dance!!! I Hope he was also taking singing lessons...Avatar ImageBlatcher914 says: and also loved the film, never saw the musical before and I am just glad that I have a chance to see Dan on stage, as I did not get the opportunity to see EquusAvatar ImagevampressISap0tter says: Equus stunt again? joke.. well, thats good he's opening up again another oppurtunity for acting other than hp. wait..he'll sing? wonder how that will sound like..screeching cat or screeching tire? joke! of course, i'll bet it'll sound like an angel like that face of his. :)Avatar ImageCatherine_R_Williams says: I am so very proud of (you) Dan... break a leg!Avatar ImageFifi says: Dan can sing? Didn't know he could. But, jain, you made a very good point there; don't underestimate Dan! So good luck Dan! : DAvatar Imageaquilus says: Sounds way cool.Avatar ImageCarol Carvalho says: @Jain... I agree that the best singers are those who interpret a song and you were spot on when you mention Bob Dylan. But just like Johnny Depp did a wonderful job on the movie Sweeney Todd I don't think he would be able to pull the stage off... I've seen both, movie and theater and those guys are unbelievable singers, it takes more than being good actor and a good singing voice to that. In the other hand, Dan will never take the job if he's not completely secure he can do it. He is sensible and he may just work very hard and nail it!! I hope he kicks ass!!! :P Avatar Imagelevi-OH-sa not levio-SA says: i was there for equus and i will be there again for this...i will go see whatever he does! i love dan!Avatar Imagelevi-OH-sa not levio-SA says: plus he talked about wanting to do a musical for his next broadway project so i believe it!Avatar Imageflowerchild says: nice :)Avatar Imagestenojoz says: That would be awesome to see. Wish I lived in NY for reasons like that. Oh well...hope it's true, and if it is, much luck to Dan!Avatar Imagealicia00 says: sweetAvatar Imageizziewitch says: hmm. Not my favorite musical. But, the lead part doesn't require someone with a fantastic voice (Robert Morse didn't have one), just a lot of stage presence. Not really sure Dan is up for this. I'd like to see him do some more stage work in England first. However, that said--I'd love to see him, in just about anything!!Avatar Imagemuggle118 says: i wanna go see thisAvatar ImageHermione Elizabeth says: I would love to know if Dan could sing.... I don't see why he couldn't. Sounds pretty cool! :)Avatar Imagecghambright says: Awesome GO DAN!! I guess his singing and dancing lessons paid off. I can't wait to see it!! :DAvatar Imagemjkalldaway says: coolAvatar Imagehermionerules1844 says: I wonder how he sings. It does not sound like there is really anything inappropriate about it, so I'm probably going to go find out for myself.Avatar Imagestevenk12468 says: I watched an interview where he stated that he was taking singing lessons. He did sing in the Fundraiser he done on Broadway while doing Equus. The horse song! It's on youtube. It's so funny... "You were made for racing, but I prefer you facing, forward..." LOL..Avatar Imagesunlitdays says: so, dan would be the crafty window washer who uses the self help book to like, beast at life, and get the girl? oh wow dan could totally pull that offAvatar Image42sk8ter says: hmmmm..... i wonder how he sounds like singingAvatar ImageThe Hufflepuff Giraffe says: No way!! This would be totally crazy. I saw a local high school production of How to Succeed in Business a few years ago, it seems weird that Dan could be a part of that. But I really hope we get to hear him sing soon, even if this doesn't happen!Avatar Imagesairah says: O-oh yes... Avatar ImageMr. Brightside says: Amazing, way to go Dan! I wonder though if this will have any impact in the Potter filming, since they will be filming till April?Avatar ImageNicci Weasley says: Sounds pretty cool...Avatar Imageginevrapotter07 says: cool! Dan's gonna sing! :) But, this better not interrupt the filming of Deathly Hallows!!Avatar ImageCatherine says: does he sing? awesome go Dan, its good to branch out!Avatar ImageSigourney1990 says: awesome :) it'd be brilliant if he does this, a little more to add to his career. i like that he's branching out and doing other things. all the other HP cast seem to be now, the younger ones, obviously the adults have already got preeeeetty impressive cv's :)Avatar Imageharrypotter_123 says: Amazing!! :)Avatar Imagepfowlerp says: Way to go Dan!!! It's great he's branching out, but I hope it doesn't interfear with the filming of DH.Avatar ImageBookworm Jen says: I'd love to see Dan in a musical, but I do think it's a bit too soon for another revival of "How to Succeed". Personally, I'd prefer to see him originate a role in a new production. However, whatever he decides to do next on Broadway, I will be there; he was incredible in Equus.Avatar ImageBeckster235 says: he sings..who knew? : ) and hell be in new york. yay!Avatar ImageLisbry says: Woah, musical of all things. Excited, can't wait to see how it turns out. Avatar ImageLisbry says: Woah, musical of all things. Excited, can't wait to see how it turns out. Avatar Imageele0206 says: This is wonderful...I'm happy Dan's having other projects besides Harry Potter, that means he'll have a long and lucky career!!Avatar Imagehallowowls says: I think this is rather unfair- why should he be having to take lessons when there are far more capable actors who could do the job? what's the point? just to have a famous name on a programme? Musicals are hard work. You can't stop and do it over as you can in film- it's live and there's nowhere to escape to if you get it all wrong....Avatar ImageethanHP says: Of course we knew he sings, he sang in a show last year for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, he has been taking lessons. "How to Succeed" is a fantastic play, very fitting for the times we are living right now...Avatar Imagebeewell says: I am sure that Dan can sing a little bit. He did do a song for the fund raiser after his stint in Equus with part of the cast. Sure he will be able to pull this off brillantly. If he is cast, I know I will be on my way to New York to see it. He was wonderful in Equus and I am sure that he will be wonderful in this.Avatar ImageMoose_Starr says: Well I'm with the posters that are excited about this. Dan has already done stage acting with Equus and has been pointed out he sang in the charity show, so I think this is just great news. For those worried that stage is not like film, Dan was in Equus so he must know about doing live shows with no place to hide. I think this is great news :)Avatar ImageBlatcher914 says: Well my only reservations were that Dan could not sing, but after hearing that he has in fact sang before, I am just excited to see this musical, loved the book, and I hope that the musical will be just as fantastic. :)Avatar ImageHagrid 713 says: odd choice for the next phase of his career but then again Dan has always been boldAvatar Imagelttlmsravnclaw07 says: What?! Can he sing and dance? No offense, but that makes no sense. I mean sure he can act, but making movies and being on broadway are too very different things.Avatar ImageMatea says: well,I hope its going to sound good. they wouldn't hire him other way. good luck, its a big bite! :)Avatar ImageCatherine_R_Williams says: I know its in your blood to be on stage.. isn't that where you started off Daniel? Also if you have been accepted into a Broadway Musical.. they must have felt you were quite acceptable for the job! Well done! I am proud that you have such great ability to tackle both forms of acting and for you I can see it is all good! Cheers!Avatar Imageluna.quibbler says: cool! wow i didn't know he could sing!! hmmm lets hope he can! =) heheAvatar Imagejain says: perhaps you should try and track down the video of Dan singing on broadway. It was a charity event, but it was ok. He's been taking lessons. and if no ones happy with that. Just remember Rex Harrison in 'My Fair Lady'. It was a box office senation for it's time. Don't confuse pleasant voices with just being able to sing. Again think of that mega superstar Bob Dylan. Not pretty, but he's made a long career out of his 'singing'. The best singers are those who interpret a song. Which is why Madonna for all her millons is a poor singer. Way to go Dan. Avatar Imagesnoozer says: Wow full schedule for Dan, Where does he find the energy and time. Avatar Imagealegria35 says: hope this will be soon.. or i wont be able to catch it....Avatar Imagekyramp says: He sings? I hope he does well!Avatar ImageMariaKeis says: Dan singing? OMG .. Well, if Tom Felton can sing, maybe Dan can to? woop woop .. Avatar ImageWON_TWO says: Thats nice....Avatar Imagekiwimci says: Really? Well then again I never believed years ago that he'd signed on to blind horses and be naked on stage... how wrong I wasAvatar ImageProfKnight says: I'm happy for him, bu t thought a while back he did an interview where he said he's an aweful singer/dancer Avatar Imagemagicmaniac says: Dan can sing!Amazing I wanna hear him!!!!Avatar Imageoldenoughtoknowbetter says: Wasn't aware he could sing. Break a leg Dan.Avatar Imagephoenixes are in ravenclaw says: omg i love this musical. It is awesome!!! I wonder who he will play...Avatar ImageFresca says: Dan did very well in Equs, and if he can sing, I say, "Go for it, Dan!"Avatar ImageFresca says: Dan did very well in Equs, and if he can sing, I say, "Go for it, Dan!"Avatar Imagebettb says: Yeah, this must be why he was taking dance lessons. He was oh-so-coy about it when it came out, but I'll bet this was in the works at the time. Good for Dan.Avatar Imagecghambright says: @phoenixes are in ravenclaw: It said in the article that Dan would play the LEAD role. :DAvatar ImageWingardium Leviosa says: Sounds good, but I wonder if he can sing.Avatar ImageFastbak says: Forget singing and dancing. Can Dan do a good American accent for the role?Avatar Imagehumbert0 says: Nice job! =)Avatar ImageLulubelleI says: He sings???Avatar ImageEmmaCMF says: Head over to youtube and search for Daniel radcliffe gypsy of the year, and you can all hear his singing voice for yourselves. He's pretty good, actually, especially considering that he had an almost constant cold and sounded somewhat hoarse for the last couple of months of the Equus run.Avatar Imagesunlitdays says: ahhhhh i wanna hear him sing!!!Avatar Imageatarigurl05 says: SINCE WHEN DOES HE SING????????????????????????????Avatar ImageFleur-de- Lily says: OK i hope he can sing well.Avatar ImageJeannine says: BWT::Guys this isn't for sure yet.,,,that he will do the's a reading.,,he is looking at all kinds of projects....this is one of them. If he does do it I hope he does another film before he starts this.Avatar ImageNot Slytherin says: OMG, I'm freaking OUT! This is so exciting. I know he will be brilliant!!!Avatar Imagemaimiaa says: whoa Dan in a musical? pretty awesome! :DAvatar ImagexAnaheyy says: whao Dan singing ? IM IN :DAvatar ImageLions4thecup says: hey this is like when i heard Johnny Depp was gonna be in a musical...I didn't actually see Sweeney Todd but I heard he was good in it. I hope Dan's just as good...can't really imagine him singing but I couldn't picture Johnny Depp singing either.Avatar ImageScribbled says: So he sings, eh? Should be interesting. I wish him luck!Avatar Imagesairah says: O-oh yes... Avatar Imagefinniguffle651 says: He's gonna sing now? Awesoooome!Avatar ImageDiamondWings says: Go Dan!!! =DAvatar Imagedaharja says: I'm dying here! My parents wouldn't allow me to see Equus, but they both LOVE How to Succeed! My dad even played the boss when he was in high school. I'm so excited to hear Dan sing! I'd want to see that show anyway. Go Dan!Avatar Imagesgt_majorette says: You don't need to be a singer for this role. You have to be cute, and intelligent enough to be taught to hit the occasional note accurately. I'm not the biggest Dan Radcliffe fan in the world, but I do think this role will suit him.Avatar ImageScarStruck says:!Avatar Imageiheartpink says: omg, this is amazing! if he's really doing this i totally want to see it ^_^Avatar ImageDeliaDee says: If this is true, I'm sure he's taking singing lessons. I remember him saying in a couple of different interviews that he can't sing to save his life. If that's true, this might just be one of "those" rumours.Avatar ImageAlice Weasley says: This would be pretty cool if it turns out to be true. I love musical theatre!!Avatar ImageAyuSaraswati says: er..Dan sings? really?Avatar ImageJeannine says:'s in VARIETY it's not a rumor.Avatar ImageRavenclaw98 says: sounds cool!Avatar Imageharrygetsme says: i heard this on e! too. so exciting...and i actually might be in new york city come december :)Avatar ImageBrosia23 says: I have never wanted to see a Broadway play so badly in all my life. I hope his singing is up to par. He could be insanely good...I have heard wonderful things about Equis, naked parts not withstanding.Avatar ImagetheREALGinnyWeasley says: I want to hear his voice!!!! <3Avatar ImagetheREALGinnyWeasley says: I want to hear his voice!!!! <3Avatar ImageMidnightSun321 says: oooooh awesum :) but can he sing? hmm.... :SAvatar Imageanne1 says: Have people forgotten already that he sang at the start of Equus? He was fine actually. Not every musical role requires a fantastic singing voice. Rowan Atkinson in Oliver didn't have one and he was brilliant, and Lions4thecup mentioned Johnny Depp, he was fantastic as Sweeney Todd as was Helena BC and neither of them had great voices. It depends on the role of course. I don't know this musical but its subject sounds more like a man in the street type so I don't expect he need to be operatic. Anyway he'll work his butt off to achieve it. Like all the voice and accent training he did for Equus and DB and the hours and hours of underwater training for GOF. This just makes me more impressed with him, which is what attracted me to him in the first place. He's so enthusiastic that he wants to try everything, even what he doesn't know and he pushes himself beyond his comfort zone to take on and succeed in projects that people don't imagine him equipped for. Whatever he does he's going to have a very varied and interesting career and life.Avatar ImageRowling Stones says: awesome dude!Avatar ImageDanielBonnie28 says: That's SOOO COOL!!Avatar ImageweB3now says: I thought I heard Dan say in many interviews when they asked if he would ever do a musical, he said NO. He was insistent that he can't sing. Avatar ImageAsi says: Oh, I would like to here how Dan sings! But maybe he'll be just acting and the other one will be singing inseted of him, I mean Zas Efron wasn't singing in the Hight school 1st movie-musical but than in the others he started singing for himself!Avatar ImageLeeann says: Should be neat if he confirms.Avatar Imagehermione06 says: well that's interesting... I didn't even know he could sing... or even liked to singAvatar ImageMoony. says: Yet he doesn't want to do a Harry Potter musical? Gahh!Avatar ImageHBPFan says: I think I'll wait for more confirmation on this..Avatar Imagewandmastercalum says: Go Dan!!!Avatar Imagemugglemom4 says: Hope it works out for him. :)Avatar ImageFigment says: I have a feeling that Dan will do great!Avatar Imagewing says: good news
