Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is one of the semifinalists of films in consideration for a VFX Oscar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released this list of 15 films that are on the shortlist for Achievement in Visual Effects. In early January, this list will be narrowed to seven finalists for the Oscars which will be announced Tuesday, February 2, 2010. The list of contenders is as follows:
- “Angels & Demons”
- “Avatar”
- “Coraline”
- “Disney’s A Christmas Carol”
- “District 9”
- “G-Force”
- “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”
- “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”
- “Sherlock Holmes”
- “Star Trek”
- “Terminator Salvation”
- “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”
- “2012”
- “Watchmen”
- “Where the Wild Things Are”
Thanks Andrew
I’m rooting for Avatar. Everything I’ve seen shows that its effects are beyond any of these other films, including Half Blood Prince…and it seems the reviews are agreeing with me. If Avatar loses this catagory, then something is seriously wrong with the Academy.
It would still be cool for HBP to be nominate though.

I expect two of the finalists will be Avatar and Coraline. Not sure if HBP will make the short list, only because we didn’t see anything new in this film, and the Oscars always award the films that did something new or different. My money’s on Avatar to win.

If the special effects in Avatar are well done, I think it will win. I have only seen them on a small screen, the key will be how they look in a cinema. The Academy seems to reward innovation.
But, HBP did a great job with what it had and I think deserves to be nominated.

oooooh, it would be AWESOME if HBP won an Oscar although i think it does have some serious competition what with movies like ‘2012’, ‘Coraline’, ‘Avatar’, ect
fingers crossed for HBP to win
It would be nice if Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince won! Guess I have to wait until February.
