Last week we told you about a special gathering of translators for the Harry Potter novels due to take place in France as part of the UNESCO International Literacy day celebration. Today, there is a marvelous audio report online from the conference that includes interviews with professors and several of the translators of the novels. Notable are comments from the Thai translator and her remarks on the huge impact the Harry Potter novels made on the amount of reading done in her country. Also of interest are thoughts and reflections from those who translate the books in Hebrew, Africaans, the hurdles the Georgian translators faced (where burning of the books was being encouraged), as well as a audio sample of the first Harry Potter book translated in Ancient Greek. Enjoy!

Thanks much to Gili Bar-Hillel!

Well i hope that the HP fans apreciate what it takes to translate the books in something other than English. It is a big task.

That’s awful people would encourage burning of any book…unless you need to start a fire in a life-or-death situation ala The Day After Tomorrow :3

This was an interesting article. They need to translate Phoenix Weasely’s book into Georgian so it can help dispel the myth that Harry Potter books are "Evil’. How foolish can people be?

I have never hear of books being burned in my country. There have been some protests, but I’ve never seen them burning HP. I still remember 2002 (the year when PS first came out) very well.
And a little question – is there a way to upload Georgian book covers (in not so big resolution) for book cover gallery?
