In an Entertainment Weekly article, Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) discusses how he initially put together the character of Lucius Malfoy in the first Harry Potter film he appeared in, “Chamber of Secrets.” Isaacs talks about the contributions he made to the character’s costume (which includes the wig) and his accent:

“I
went to the set, and they had this idea of me wearing a pinstripe suit,
short black-and-white hair’ Isaacs recalls. “I was slightly horrified.
He was a racist, a eugenicist. There’s no way he would cut his hair
like a Muggle, or dress like a Muggle.” So Isaacs suggested instead that
he wear a long white wig, and a particularly ostentatious wizard-like
ensemble. “In order to keep the hair straight, I had to tip my head
back, so I was looking down my nose at everyone. There was 50 percent of
the character. I asked for a walking stick, which [Chamber of Secrets director] Chris Columbus first thought was because I had something
wrong with my leg. I explained I wanted it as an affectation so I can
pull my wand out [of the cane]. After a second’s thought, he said, ˜You
know what, I think the toy guys are going to love you.’ He was
completely right.”

Next: Malfoy’s accent. “There’s a particular art critic in England
who has a voice like fingernails on a blackboard’ says Isaacs, who in
real life has a far more accessible, slightly working class London
accent. “I combined him with a teacher I thought was patronizing and
sadistic when I was in drama school. To me what [the accent] smacks of
is a sense of entitlement. I just wanted to find a voice that made him
drip with the millennia that his family had been in power ” complete
disdain and contempt for anybody and everything else.”

Isaacs goes on to talk about director Chris Columbus’s reaction to the accent and Daniel Radcliffe’s (Harry Potter) opinion of it. You can read the rest of the article here.

Avatar Imagelaxtrafficman says: Oh, first! I love it when actors really care enough about characters to have some input. Jason Isaacs definitely did a great job with his contributions.Avatar Imageratorr2 says: Brilliant job Jason. Love your contributions to the character.Avatar Imagegreenfinch says: Love Jason Isaacs, love when actors bring something extra (like this) to the character.Avatar Imagesirius17 says: It's great how enthusiatic he is about his role in the film and how he cares about the fansites. I find it really funny too how much he loves that cane, when voldemort snapped in the the movie he must have been truly heartbroken. Avatar Imagecubman987 says: Isaacs is a great actor and was absolutely perfect for the part!Avatar ImageSindi says: There'd be no better person to play Lucius than Isaacs :D Great job! :D Avatar ImageMalfoyDiva says: As an actress myself I am fully awed by his brilliant choices. I have always been a Jasson Isaacs fan but he made me a die hard Lucius Malfoy fan. The way he says every line with that silky snide self righteous attitude dripping from his every pore is for lack of a better adjective fantastically brilliant. I too was saddened to see Voldemort snap the cane in the movie, It was perfect for his character to do so, but I felt like I could feel Lucius' pain in that moment because I'm one of the geeks who actually purchased the walking stick replica from the noble collection, and in that moment I was like "no don't break my staff." I love Malfoy and I love Jasson Isaacs, the more we see of him the better!!!Avatar ImageEeyore says: Jason Isaacs is so perfect for the part and I've always loved it that he knew enough about the character to know just how Lucius would dress and talk. Fantastic call, Jason.Avatar Imageashim_gryffindor says: Jason Isaacs added those essentials bits needed for Lucius, great job Isaacs!Avatar Imagethefifthmaurauder_ngolb says: He looks great.Mean and scary. You can watch harry potter DH Part 1 on this link http://www.novamov.com/video/mie9i22165jsr.Hope you enjoy it.Avatar Imageselenialovegood says: He is a brilliant actor! I love him!!!<3 I wish I could meet him and say it to him personally!!!Avatar ImageBless_the_children says: Oh thank goodness he stopped them from messing up his hair and clothing! I always thought Narcissa's hair was really strange, but I get they were trying for a combo of blond for Malfoy and black hair for her maiden name of Black. She is a minor character so far so it has been too much of a bother; messing with Lucius's hair would have just been too much.Avatar ImageValeria-Johanna says: He was superb in the new film. I *almost* felt sorry for Lucius!Avatar ImageJK.jr. says: Thank Goodness he was there to make sure they didn't mess up Lucius's costume!Avatar ImageTheGleek77 says: wow I love how he played Lucius so well! and good thing they didn't mess up his costume!Avatar ImageLillylove says: I love Jason's ragged, haunted look in DH. He does Lucius brilliantly!Avatar Imageglow_freak says: Wow! Awesome article and great insight into Lucius!Avatar ImageBlack_wind says: Don´t you just love Jason and his Lucius?:)Avatar ImageCurandera says: It is a real testament to the capacity for empathy of Potter fans that we all winced for Lucius Malfoy of all people when Voldemort snapped his wand. I've only seen the movie once so far but the look on Voldemort's face is still with me. He knew how much that hurt. He knew how humiliated Lucius would be. He pauses a moment before continuing just to see if Malfoy would do something, anything - like a cat scooting a half-dead mouse across the floor with its paw.Avatar ImageGiant Squid says: Great interview! I love his accent and his wig! Thank goodness that he wore that wig!Avatar Imagesueml says: I love how the younger Dan thought the accent was "cool", so they let Jason proceed with it!Avatar Imagelunawannabe says: Jason is absolutely brilliant, and hearing that he's such a good fan makes me love him even more. I'm so glad he cared enough about the character to try and get the director's image changed; the old idea sounds awful! He's so wonderful in Deathly Hallows- all those small movements when Voldie is taking his wand- and I could almost feel bad for him. He's the one who made me interested in Lucius; until I saw his performance I only really cared about Draco and, after DH, Narcissa.Avatar ImageMissHermione says: love it!Avatar Imagechris_anderson says: MTA offering service to Hogwarts? Amazing insight :)Avatar Imagedevilskinn says: @Lunawannabe it was similar with me :-? Jason was the reason I became more interested in Lucius Avatar ImageA Chocolate Frog says: Brilliant actor! He was perfect again as a totally desperate Lucius in Deathly Hallows. Thanks for all of your fabulous work, Mr. Isaacs!!Avatar ImageCissyandLucius4ever says: I love Jason Isaac's Lucius! <3 He does the perfect job portraying him as snobbish and sexy. :D And I felt so bad for Lucius when Voldy broke his precious pimp cane...XP Anyways, great interview. Gotta love that picture too...*daydreams*Avatar ImageOh Neville says: Great article -- love how it was wanting to measure up to Alan Rickman that made him work so hard at the character! :) I, also, felt sorry for Lucius in DH I -- it's impossible not to. Avatar Imagebudgie says: Lucius got something he never expected, and Jason shows that well.Avatar Imagebellatrix15101 says: Haha, it's rather amusing how, when they couldn't make Lucius have the black and white wig, they gave it to Narcissa......... I'm quite glad he insisted on the long blonde one! And the wonderful walking stick! XDAvatar ImageLunaLuver says: Jason Isaacs has done wonders with his character. Her really cares about all the little details which make Lucius so great, the accent is THE thing that pulls it all together. Jason was AMAZING is part one and I cant wait to the the ending with whatevre happens to Lucius.Avatar Imagepaskunia says: I love it when good guys- like Jason- play bad guys. And he doesn't play Lucius as a stereotypical villain- thank goodness for that! Evil wizards have been around in films since they began making them, but it takes a good actor to convey the dark soul of someone as malevolent as Lucius Malfoy. Avatar Imagebadger666 says: He is perfect for Lucius! And I love that he is so enthusiastic about his character and the movies/books in general. It's great when a real fan gets to be in the movies. Avatar ImageHogwartsChaplain says: He must mean the fabulous Brian Sewel... Art Critic for the London "Evening Standard" Newspaper! What a perfect choice. And, Yes Mr Columbus, there really are people who speak like that!Avatar Imageazaadpotter says: Good job JasonAvatar ImageFresca says: Jason Isaacs is an amazing actor. Trying to make him look like a rich muggle would have failed completely. I am so glad that the Producers kept Isaac's portrayal of Lucius Malfoy in the films. His acting helps us understand Draco better as well. In the Deathly Hallows movie you can feel how afraid he is of Voldie, and he conveys how desperate Lucius is to regain Voldemorts' favor once more. Avatar ImageTar-Palantir says: Here is a sample the voice of Brian Sewell - the basis for the Jason Isaacs Lucius Malfoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3G618-hxgA The resemblance is pretty obvious, once you know - but Lucius is crisper, and certainly more sinister.Avatar ImageAvanelleWood says: There's no question that Mr. Isaacs has created a brilliant Lucius Malfoy. I can't picture anyone else playing that character.Avatar ImageRsheppard says: I can't imagine anyone but Jason playing Lucius Malfoy Avatar ImageMidnightSun321 says: He looks kind of hot in that picture :/Avatar Imagespelljinxcursehexcharm says: Good thing they didn't mess up his appearance. Even though JK never says anything about how he looked in his books they got it perfectly.Avatar Imagebella vita says: What is with the hair people on these movies and their desire to give both Mr and Mrs Malfoy skunk hair? First they tried to give Lucius skunk hair then even though that proved an epic failure when his wife Narcissa came along they gave her the skunk hair instead despite the fact that the hair of both characters is described as an almost white blonde just like Draco's! I'm sorry, but movie Narcissa's hair just KILLS me! I mean seriously what was the point of doing that to her hair? She looks totally ridiculous and NOTHING like Narcissa in the books to the point that it completely distracts me from her performance! Even the length of her hair is all wrong and her hair color is an absolute joke despite the US version of HBP having an illustration of Narcissa's hair from the back clearly showing what her hair looks like at the start of the "Spinner's End" chapter and how she's actually described. Even Harry admits in GOF that she would've been quite attractive if it weren't for the constant expression of disgust on her face, but does anyone find movie Narcissa attractive with that hair? I certainly don't! Jason is just so brilliant and dedicated to these films, its fans, and his character that I'd really hoped that whoever they cast to play his wife would be equally dedicated to their character so it disappointed me when I saw the saw the first stills of Narcissa from HBP. If she were even half as dedicated as Jason and Tom she would NEVER have allowed them do that to her character's hair. Ok done ranting! As always LOVE Jason in this article and in DH 1! Like everyone else here I too felt sorry for him when Voldemort snapped his cane, but Draco is the one I felt deeply sorry for. He hardly even bothered to keep Harry from taking those wands and after a few seconds of pulling back and forth between them it seemed as if he simply just let go on purpose. I'm super nervous and excited to see how they've changed the ending for Lucius! I just hope they don't kill him! I also wonder whether or not we'll see the Malfoys being tortured for the trio's escape or did Dobby show up before anyone was actually able to call for him?Avatar Imagejhangelgurl says: So glad they picked Jason Isaacs I can't imagine Lucious with short black and white hair and wearing something a muggle would wear?!Avatar ImageFiniteincantatum says: Brilliant, and superb, Lucius Malfoy that guy. Actors like him should be looked up to.
