Rumors have been cropping up on the internet in the past few weeks regarding Harry Potter director David Yates possibly being in the running to take over the production of the film, "The Hobbit." As movie buffs will know, director Guillermo Del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth") stepped away from the the director's chair of "The Hobbit" recently, which has caused much speculation as to who would be his replacement. Today, SlashFilm.com is reporting the rumor that Harry Potter director David Yates is the frontrunner to direct the film. This information is also being reported by CinemaBlend.com, which notes "that "industry insider tracking boards" have it that Yates is the studio's top choice to take over. It's worth noting that the studio in this case is MGM, which is famously mired in financial troubles and may not even be able to fund the film any time soon. It's also worth noting that Yates just wrapped production on the final Harry Potter film and will be spending the next few months locked in an edit room."
While this is indeed an exciting report, it is still very much a rumor, and will stay listed as such until official word comes from the studio or Mr. Yates' camp.
Thanks to
HPANA for the heads up!

Peter Jackson did a marvelous teaching job with the LOTR series in that he showed exactly how to make a series of movies. Same cast, same director, same composer, same special effects house, same costumes, and on and on.. Now to give the Hobbit to Yeates instead of Peter Jackson and crew from LOTR, WHY BOTHER???

Yates would have Bilbo hitting on waitresses at The Prancing Pony, and Death Eaters burning down Bag End….. Please, NOOOOOOOO! PJ is the only choice.

I agree with those who DO NOT LIKE this idea. After the mediocre job he did with OOTP and HBP, I’m not optimistic about DH. David Yates for “The Hobbit”? OH HELL NO.

I agree with those people who think the Hobbit should be Peter Jackson’s film to make. He did ana wesome job on LOTR, and deserves the chance to make The Hobbit.

It’s not 100% being made by MGM – it’s actually a WB/MGM co-production (WB has the distribution rights, MGM the production rights) and I have a feeling WB have more control and hence probably where the rumour is coming from. Plus WB has made a bid to buy MGM, which would then make it all WB.

Good Lord, that’s a big NO!
Peter Jackson is NOT directing the Hobbit. So there is no way they can “KEEP” him.
You people are so hateful.

I do agree that only Peter Jackson should even try to do this project on The Hobbit. I mean he has created this world visually for cinema and it’s spectacular! But I do have to say that I have enjoyed David Yates as a director too and wouldn’t mind seeing him direct The Hobbit. :)

That is cool he is already starting up on new films.

I would not be disappointed if a “Hobbit” movie never came about. Thought Jackson trashed LOTR so I would like to have fond memories of The Hobbit without an abysmal movie adaptation.

I would hope Jackson would stay in the Hobbit production. In any case, the Hobbit should procees while the actors who have continuity with LOTR are available.
