Ms. Lynch’s wonderfully serene portrayal just serves to reinforce my inclination to be a Harry/Luna shipper. She is clearly his soulmate – if only he could let himself see it!
What I don’t get is how JKR could give us such a sympathetic portrayal of a person with a mental illness in the case of the apparently schizophrenic Luna and such an unsympathetic one in the case of the obviously depressive Cho. Even emotional-range-of-a-teaspoon Ron eventually learns to defend Luna from the people who make fun of her, but Harry is at his 15-year-old worst in his utter lack of empathy for Cho and inability to listen to her grief over Cedric. And no one ever really calls him on it – not even Hermione. People just keep telling him that he’s smart to avoid people who need to cry a lot. It’s my one big disappointment in JKR: that she seems to be reinforcing the social stigma attached to people who suffer from depression. It’s a poor moral lesson for her young readers.
