Reports have been making their way online regarding a “unauthorized made-for-TV biography” of the life of Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling beginning production next month. The Times Colonist is reporting that the film, titled “Strange Magic,” is set to be shot in Victoria, Canada “with the city used to re-create locations in Edinburgh, Portugal and London, including Leicester Square.” The Herald Scotland also has a report online, saying “A little-known actor has been cast to play Rowling’s first husband, Jorge Arantes, and the writer herself will be portrayed by Australian- born Poppy Montgomery, best known as FBI agent Samantha Spade in the US series Without A Trace.” Stay close to Leaky for updates as they come available.
Thanks to Doris, Siobhan, and those who mailed!

Avatar Imagejhlovesmusic says: First! That is soo cool! :D Can't wait to see it! ;)Avatar ImageGiant Squid says: No way! That is amazing! I absolutely cannot wait to see it!Avatar ImageWeenyOwl says: Ewwww...somebody else playing JKR in a fictionalized (read: sensationalized) version of her life? This is going to be a disaster.Avatar Imagegexpert says: It should be interesting, but I still think they should ask Mrs. Rowling first, for it can be quite offensive. After all, it's her decision to whether make her life into a movie or not.Avatar ImageWeenyOwl says: I mean, she's not even dead yet. Usually they wait until somebody is history before they start rewriting their story to make it more palatable to the least common denominator of the TV-consuming public.Avatar Imagenitaro48 says: Wow I live in Canada so I think it's really cool that they're shooting there. Definitely looking forward to the movie!Avatar Imagemolly43 says: I hope they at least let her see it first before putting it out. Avatar Imagechikitcorpuzvesterbaek says: mixed feelings about this - i hope they don't ruin jo's lifestory.Avatar ImageHarrypotterultrafan says: I read this before leaky had it, step up your game leaky, what's going on?? Should be good but yeah they should ask jk Rowling first Avatar Imageabandonedboyjon says: Unauthorized...Avatar Imagelollifant says: I'm not sure about this... Does JK Rowling even know about the film?Avatar Imagehermione198k says: I really don't know what to think about this. I loved the documentary the JK Rowling made and I'm not sure how this film will come out. I really feel they should ask her before they make a film about her. I don't think she will give them permission to do it because she's very protective of her private life. That is one of things I respect her most for. I think she's already told the story of her life in the most honest and best way possible.Avatar Imagerettophantom says: Not a fan. Avatar Imagerettophantom says: Not a fan. Avatar ImageEllorgast says: Weird, I live in Victoria, Canada. There is a lot of European-style architecture here, but I didn't think movie producers would actually use it as a mini-UK. Anyway, I'm guessing they've already asked and been turned down by Rowling. It really does seem strange to make an unwanted fictionalized account of someone's life, especially when they're still so young.Avatar Imageogdensnut says: Filmshaft.com writes, "Whether or not Rowling, and Hollywood will respond to this project with a big budget, big screen version is yet to be seen. We already know that Rowling has no love for anything “unofficial” relating to her or the Harry Potter series so it’d be reasonable to expect an endorsed project at some time in the near future." Food for thought... ?Avatar ImageRavenclaw4eva says: Oh my Rowling!!! That is going to be soooooo cool!!!Avatar ImageDavidTheUnready says: hmm a short tv documentary is one thing, not so sure about this ideaAvatar Imagesirius33 says: I don't really know if this is a good idea... I thought the approved documentary was enough. I doubt it will be very accurate. Avatar Imagehewy says: Why would they do this when they know she would not approve. Anyway inventing dialogue to fit into a movie (either tv or big screen) is just ridiculous when she has already done a beautiful documentary. Some people just get greedy.Avatar Imageazaadpotter says: Ummmm good idea but hope they make it after Jo's ApprovalAvatar ImageSaskiaM says: This seems like a really lowlife thing to do. I can't answer for what Jo thinks about it, of course, but knowing what I do know about her, I'm guessing she's NOT happy about it. I didn't even know they were allowed to make unauthorized films. Books are one thing, but... really? I don't think it's at all fair to interpret someone's life for them and then thrust it up on the big screen for all to see without getting permission from the person themselves. I'd hate my life on a screen. And I can't imagine they'll do it very well either, since they're filming in Canada. Ugh.Avatar ImageGerman Adam says: Who knew Victoria British Columbia could be so versatile! I'm guessing the telefilm has a VERY tight budget.Avatar ImageDDWatson says: This is going to be legendary!! and they're shooting it in Canada!! yaaa Canadians represent here! :DAvatar ImageOh Neville says: Sounds like they're looking to make a quick buck off JKR. In which regard, I might point out to them that JKR has the net worth of many third world countries -- combined. Tick her off at your own peril. Avatar ImageMimblewimble13 says: A red flag to me is that they will portray her first marriage, which she has never spoken of publicly. So who is their source for this portion of the screenplay? Avatar ImageFiniteincantatum says: They should ask Ma'am Rowling first before doing so, it is very disturbing to have unauthorized stuff. I will never watch it if it's unauthorized. Avatar Imageradishraven says: um no. I'd never go and see it. I mean first I need JKR's approval second the dialogue and whole thing will be corny... No, just...no.Avatar ImageCatherine says: All righty, i could see this going epically terrible, and hollywood dr5amatising every single detail and producing something that would be the death of Jo...but it could go well but i would cast Meryl Streep as Jo :)!Avatar Imageiamminerva says: I don't think I'd go see this. You can be sure that Jo is not happy about this, especially since they will dramatize her first marriage. Avatar Imageapril_showers says: Dislike!Avatar Imageapril_showers says: Dislike!Avatar ImageIndigoMisfit says: @Bryony Unauthorized films are allowed, think "the social network". But, because it is unauthorized it is going to be inaccurate or at worst sensationalized, even if it is a good movie, think "the social network".Avatar Imageowanalilypotter says: Wow, I was actually wondering if they would make one of these films for her! Her life is so fascinating! But of course, they have to get her permission first. It's her life after all. But I think this would be really interesting if she onboard!Avatar Imagejessyginny says: That would be soooo cool if they did a movie about Jo, but I wish that Jo could be in the movie/tv serie herself... But great!:)Avatar Imagelunawannabe says: I really don't like it. I loved the documentary they made that she was a part of, but that was so strong because it was actually her talking, giving us more information, going through places she'd been before. It was fabulous, because the strength and awesomeness of Jo isn't that she can sign books and walk around, it's her words. Always and forever. I don't see how they'll pull this off and give me any Jo love. I'm also not a fan about this whole showing of her first marrige. It seems so disrespectful; Jo doesn't like talking about it that much, it seems really presumptuous to try and present that. And will they show her and her dad's relationship? That gets into some really sticky, personal stuff. They shouldn't show that without her permission. It's just disrespectful.Avatar Imagelunawannabe says: I really don't like it. It's her work that is extraordinary, not her life.Avatar ImageSindi says: Hmm its always nice to learn more about JK Rowling but if its something that she doesnt approve of, it would be respectful to not go through with it, cause i doubt it would be in the interest of really loving JK and more for the money.. and thats not right... :\ lets see what happens... Avatar ImageEeyore says: The documentary that she made was perfect. But this movie? What an invasion of the privacy she has worked so hard to maintain for herself and her family. It says it's a made for TV movie, so I'll make sure I'm watching something else. I highly doubt that Jo will be pleased. But there is probably no way she can stop it.Avatar Imageiwannabeanauror says: I would be so annoyed if someone took my life and made a movie of it without permission.Although Ms.Rowling has an insperational life story, she should be able to say no if she wanted to.Avatar ImageMeggie the Goose says: Ah! Kind of weird but still awesome! I live in Victoria and I could've gone down yesterday but I haven't been on Leaky in so long I just found out today. I love the brick sidewalks and Munro's books!Avatar Imagekyrstalkris says: I wonder how this would turn out! But I bet people would watch it. Just because she's a big name author, can't wait! =]
